2014 Refurbishment preview
Disney has updated the refurbishment schedule through the first part of 2014, which is helpful for those planning trips after the holiday season. Here are the newest additions and notable changes (the full schedule is in Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures below):
Disneyland
- Tiki Juice Bar – closed through November 14 for refurbishment. [Note, this location was still open this past weekend, even though it appears on the refurbishment schedule as already closed. ]
- Star Tours Cabin 4 – closed October 29–31 for refurbishment. The ride continues to operate at 3/4 capacity.
- Jungle Cruise – delayed (noon) opening December 2–5 and December 9–12.
- Fantasmic – dark January 6 through February 13.
- Alice in Wonderland – closed January 6 through May 22 for refurbishment.
- Haunted Mansion – closed January 7–17 to remove the holiday overlay.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed until “early 2014” for a major refurbishment. One cast member document lists February 14, 2014 as the reopening date. The ride was to have reopened October 30, 2013.
Disney California Adventure
- Buena Vista Street west guest bathrooms – closed January 6–16. These restrooms were not touched during the DCA renovation, so this may be the update that removes the original 2001 decor and color scheme.
- Grizzly River Run – closed January 6 through February 13 for refurbishment.
- Redwood Creek Challenge Trail – closed January 6 through February 27 for refurbishment.
- World of Color – dark January 7–16.
Club 33 chef St. Pierre to head Disneyland Hotel restaurants
We reported last week that Andrew Sutton had been named Executive Chef, Disneyland Resort Signature Restaurants, with oversight of Napa Rose, Carthay Circle, and Club 33. Disney has since announced that current Club 33 Executive Chef Marcel St. Pierre will be promoted to Chef de Cuisine at the restaurants of the Disneyland Hotel effective January 2014, and be responsible for Steakhouse 55, Goofy’s Kitchen, Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, Tangaroa Terrace, and room service at the Disneyland Hotel.
“Jingle Cruise” debuts at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom this winter
Joining the Haunted Mansion, “it's a small world,” and Space Mountain holiday overlays, Disney Parks announced the transformation of the Jungle Cruise into the “Jingle Cruise” at both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom this winter:
In this new seasonal storyline of the attraction, the Skippers have grown homesick for the holidays, so they've added holiday cheer to the Jungle Cruise queue and boathouse with decorations that have been mailed to them from home (plus a few they’ve created themselves). The Skippers have also added a slew of new jokes to their tours that are the perfect way to get guests in the holiday spirit. Additionally, Jungle Cruise boats have been renamed with the holidays in mind, and if guests listen carefully, they may hear a holiday-themed radio broadcast playing in the background.
Disney has officially stated that the work to install the overlay will happen at night after park hours, without requiring an attraction closure as is the case with other holiday overlays. We've also heard that the decorations are limited to the boats, queue, and skippers' spiels, so don't expect to see tiny little Santa hats on the piranha or reindeer antlers on the zebra.
While all reader comments on the Disney Parks Blog itself are positive about this new overlay, the reaction on social media is mixed. In a casual poll of our Twitter followers, about two-thirds are looking forward to the overlay, and the rest are either taking a wait-and-see approach, or already dislike the idea.
The Disneyland version debuts November 12.
This and that…
…The Ghirardelli ice cream shop added a Pick & Mix bar to its store. Customers can fill a bag with individually wrapped squares of classic and seasonal Ghirardelli chocolates, including Peppermint Bark and Pumpkin Spice. The squares are $10 per half-pound, with a 10 percent discount if you buy one pound or more.

…Disneyland has started to add snow to Sleeping Beauty Castle last week in preparation for the upcoming holiday season, which resulted in one of my favorite photo opportunities of the year.

This week, MousePad member Goodnplenty, has a question about connecting a personal laptop to the television in Disneyland Hotel rooms:
I called the DL hotel last night and asked if it was possible to hook a laptop up to the TV in our standard room and watch some DVDs. The CM said that you could and that they could even have a tech come up to your room to help you plug in because some of the TV's are hard to access. But when I asked her what type of cables we needed to bring, like an HDMI and an audio cable she didn't seem as certain.
Has anyone here hooked their laptop up to the room TV and watched some movies on DVD? Did you need both an audio cable and an HDMI cable?
Do you have any experience with connecting your laptop to the hotel room TV? If so, please share your suggestions on our MousePad discussion forum. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

Fall
- Halloween Time – through October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party – October 30, and 31. All dates are sold out. If you are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, you may be able to purchase tickets to a “sold out” night from your hotel's front desk; check with your hotel for availability during your trip.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 9–10 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 9, with November 10 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
- World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
- Candlelight Processional – December 7 and 8. Showtimes are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. both nights.
2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. All races are now sold out, but registration is still open for the Pasta in the Park party. Volunteer registration has not yet opened. Last day to submit proof of time: November 1, 2013.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
| Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Disneyland Resort hotels – Disneyland Resort annual passholders can save 15% – 25% off rooms at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels this fall. The offer is valid for most nights October 20 through December 19, with blockout dates of of November 27–29. This package includes one Fastpass for each person on the reservation, and a voucher for a free 5″ x 7″ PhotoPass print. Full details on the Disneyland website. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013. |
