Legendary Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter resigns; takes on advisory role
Various social media networks came alive with the news late Thursday night that Tony Baxter, Senior Vice President, Creative Development for Walt Disney Imagineering, was planing on stepping down. By Friday afternoon Tony had issued an open letter to his colleagues explaining his plans in detail. In Mr. Baxter's heart felt and inspiring letter he pointed towards the “future,” speaking clearly to this new generation of Imagineers—even going as far as to name some—and confirmed the rumor from the day before that he would be stepping down effective the following day.
“Beginning this February, I will be transitioning to a position as a part time advisor,” Baxter wrote. “While I will not be here [Walt Disney Imagineering] on a regular basis, I will continue to be available to any and all of you [speaking to his fellow colleagues] as needs arise. Though my time will be limited, my passion for the magic WDI creates will be just as strong.”
Tony Baxter is one of Disney's most beloved Imagineers. Beginning his career with the Walt Disney Company as a Disneyland cast member, he is credited with the development of some of the most admired and treasured park attractions—Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Journey into Imagination Pavilion (1983), Star Tours, Splash Mountain, Disneyland Paris, and Indiana Jones Adventure stand out in his 47-year career.
In response, Walt Disney Imagineering issued a statement highlighting Tony Baxter's career and his work as an “enthusiastic mentor to new Imagineers.”
Fantasy Faire nearly complete; opens March 12
Disneyland's Fantasyland expansion project, known as Fantasy Faire, is nearly complete. In a matter of weeks, guests will be able to meet with princess, see stage shows, eat specialty foods, and experience a new area of the park. This past week, MousePlanet joined other media outlets for a tour of the still-under-construction Fantasy Faire, which takes up residence in the former Carnation Plaza Gardens location at the end of Main Street U.S.A.
The Fantasy Faire, themed to be a public gathering space, will house a permanent meet-and-greet for some of Disney's most popular princesses. Guests will have the opportunity to meet up to three princess during their visit to the Royal Hall, however which princesses you'll see will remain surprise. Those who wish to visit the Royal Hall to meet with the princesses should be prepared for long waits. Unlike similar permanent photo meet-and-greet locations at Walt Disney World, Disneyland's Fantasy Faire will not offer Disney's FASTPASS service.

Guests of the Fantasy Faire will also find sketch entertainment performed by Mr. Smythe and Mr. Jones, the town thespians, as they put on six performances each day in the Royal Theater. Two alternating 20-minute shows will feature the stories of Tangled and Beauty and the Beast. And to ensure authenticity, characters will participate in the comical retellings of these famous Disney stories.

The center of the courtyard features a miniature Tangled Tower, complete with Rapunzel's intertwined hair. In the evening hours, Rapunzel's hair will light and glow as a familiar tune is heard in the area. The surrounding facades take architectural inspiration from Disneyland's Fantasyland and Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Miniature “spires” appear along an extended part of the castle wall and a large archway, which serves as a focal point, resembles the castle itself. Guests with a sharp eye will find an animatronic Figaro perched on a window ledge. When Figaro recognizes a familiar melody sung by a nearby bird, the cat will come alive and interact with the bird before falling back to sleep again. Also nearby sits an interactive music box which contains scenes from The Huntchback of Notre Dame.
Maurice, Belle's father, has also brought his treat filled wagon to the faire to sell his latest concoctions. The menu includes three different flavors of bread twists: cheddar garlic bagel ($4.19), chocolate ($3.49) and strawberry-almond ($3.49). Maurice's will also offer a signature beverage, the Boysen Apple Freeze. The drink is a boysenberry version of Red's Apple Freeze which can be found in Cars Land and is sold by itself ($4.69) or in a collectible Princess goblet or Gaston's Tavern stein ($9.99).

The Fantasy Faire is scheduled to open Tuesday, March 12. Disneyland is still working out some details such as the operational hours, which are currently scheduled from park opening until the nightly fireworks are shown. Disney also stated to direct questioning that there are no immediate plans to bring the Saturday evening Jump, Jive and Boogie swing dance event back to the area. The swing dancers were moved out of the Carnation Plaza Gardens last spring and have since called Downtown Disney home.
You can view more photos of Fantasy Faire in “Behind the Construction Walls in Fantasy Faire.”
Music and Color to fill the Stage when Mickey and the Magical Map opens this Summer
While Disney is hard at work putting the final touches on the Fantasy Faire, the Fantasyland Theater has also been undergoing a major reconstruction project. When the Fantasyland Theater reopens this summer, it will feature a new, music-filled stage show starring Mickey Mouse. Mickey and the Magical Map tells the story of sorcerer Yen Sid and his apprentice Mickey Mouse. The 25-minute stage show features music from Pocahontas, The Jungle Book, Mulan, Tangled, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, and The Princess and the Frog.
Michael Jung, Vice President of Theatrical Development, explains the storyline behind Mickey and the Magical Map. Photo by Bryan Pugh.
Unbeknownst to Yen Sid, Mickey attempts to paint an uncompleted spot on the map. Soon after, the map, a large LED screen, begins to come alive. The map takes Mickey on a trip to India during the scene from The Jungle Book. A beautiful waterfall appears during a performance of “Just around the Riverbend,“ and floating lanterns emerge as “I see the Light” from Tangled is performed. As Mickey soon finds out, Yen Sid has been watching him throughout his journey, and has proven himself as a map maker's apprentice.
Mickey and the Magical Map opens this summer at Disneyland.
Celebrate Valentine's during 'True Love' Week
The Disneyland Resort is preparing to help spread the love this February as part of Limited Time Magic. True Love Week celebrates Valentine's all week long with floral displays, special candlelit dinners for two, romantic castle projections, and unique photo opportunities with beloved Disney sweethearts. True Love Week will be celebrated mostly at Disneyland, February 11–17.
At Disneyland park, heart-shaped signage and banners proclaiming “True Love Conquers All” will greet guests. Romantic photo opportunities will be available in Town Square and along the Royal Walk in Fantasyland. At night Sleeping Beauty Castle will blush with hues of red and pink and Snow White's Wishing Well will feature special romantic lighting.
In Town Square, guests will find photo opportunities with Disney sweetheart couples, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Donald and Daisy Duck. In Fantasyland, Disney Princes will escort their Princesses along the Royal Walk and Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen will appear in New Orleans Square.
Select restaurants throughout the resort will feature romantic dinners for two with prix fixe menus. The specially-created menus are available at the Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans at Disneyland, the Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure, Stakehouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel and Napa Rose at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel. And what would Valentine's be without sweets for your sweetheart? Specially prepared chocolate cupcakes with raspberry mousse filling and dark chocolate mousse frosting will be available at the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe in Disneyland, Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Cafe and Pacific Wharf Cafe in Disney California Adventure. If your Valentine's plans include any of these dining options we highly advise making reservations quickly by calling (714) 781-DINE (714-781-3463), or by sending an email to dine@disneyland.com.
This and that…
… Annual Passholders can take advantage of select weekday and weekend discounts on Disneyland Resort Hotel room rates from February 1 through March 15, 2013. Discounts vary depending on the day and hotel, but discounts can be as much at 25 percent. Annual Passholders need to be sure to have an account set up at Disneyland.com/ap to check for hotel rates and availability.
…Starting this week, the Disneyland Resort is implementing a new tram safety policy already in effect at Walt Disney World. The new policy requires the tram operators to play the pre-recorded safety spiel in its entirety, in both English and Spanish, before the tram can leave the loading area. Under the current policy, this safety recording plays after the tram is already under way.
This may not seem like a major change, but has the potential to increase the time needed to dispatch each tram, especially if impatient passengers ignore the announcement that boarding has ended and hop on anyway, which will force the driver to restart the safety spiel. A few of the MousePlanet staff members experienced this exact situation during a recent trip to Epcot, where the driver had to play the spiel three times because of guests who boarded despite being told not to.
…Parking lot cast members also say this is a good week to avoid the Mickey and Friends parking structure. The tram route between the structure and Downtown Disney will be slightly altered this week due to repaving work along the route, and the change may reduce the number of trams in service at any time. CMs suggest using the Toy Story parking lot while the construction is in progress.
…Are you ready for an all-new MouseAdventure in 2013? Mark your calendars and save the date for our Spring 2013 event at the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, May 19. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 30 through September 1 at the Disneyland Resort. Registration for the 10K and Half Marathon are both sold out, although spaces are still available through charity teams and select travel agencies.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 20, 2012.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells three-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 3-day Park Hoppers are $245 for adults ($230 for children); 3-day 1/park/day tickets are $217 for adults ($202 for children). 2012-2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets are blocked out through January 2; February 15–17; March 25 to April 5; and July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if other discounts are available through them. |
|
Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $245/$225 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $275/$255 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Costco Cash card ($259.99) – the Fall 2012 version of this discount offer is a bit different than past deals, with several important changes:
At face value, the ticket is only $15 less than the rack rate for a Disneyland Resort 4-Day Parkhopper ticket purchased at the Main Entrance booths, and is more expensive than the child's ticket. The real “savings” comes in the form of the $50 Costco Cash Card. If you were already in the market for a 4-day Parkhopper and plan to spend $50 at Costco, this deal will save you $65.00, but it may not be a real value if you aren't an avid Costco shopper. Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells four-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 4-day Park Hoppers are $270 for adults ($250 for children); 4-day 1/park/day tickets are $240 for adults ($220 for children). Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |
|
Five Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $260/$240 Five Day Park Hopper – Regularly $290/$270 |
Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells five-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 5-day Park Hoppers are $285 for adults ($265 for children); 5-day 1/park/day tickets are $255 for adults ($235 for children). Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |
|
Six Day, One Park per Day Ticket Six Day Park Hopper | No longer offered by Disneyland – some travel providers may offer tickets for 6 days or longer as part of a package to international customers; residents of Canada, Australia, or the U.K. should check with local travel agencies to see what options may be available. | |

No discounts currently available for new purchases. California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
