Disneyland's 60th Sweepstakes
Last week, Disneyland announced the Diamond Days Sweepstakes, a new promotion tied to the park's 60th anniversary celebration. The daily and weekly prizes are pretty spectacular, and definitely a notch above the ear hats and pin lanyards distributed during the Year of a Million Dreams promotions.
Winners of the Diamond Days sweepstakes could win a faceted Cinderella Slipper topped with a diamond and topaz pendant. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
From the little information released so far by Disney, it looks to us that daily winners receive a VIP tour as their prize. These private tours normally run up to $500 per hour, and include:
- A personal tour guide
- The ability to use the Fastpass entrance at every attraction that offers that service
- “Preferred access” at a list of rides that don't offer Fastpass
- Access to reserved viewing areas for shows like World of Color, the new “Disneyland Forever” fireworks, and the Paint the Night parade
If this is the prize, (and Disney would not comment when asked), it would be a very special way to experience the 60th anniversary events.
Special weekly prizes include a faceted Cinderella slipper topped with a heart-shaped diamond and topaz pendant, or invitations to private events like a tailgate party in Cars Land. On significant Disney dates—likely including July 17—visitors can win a 1-carat, custom-engraved diamond gemstone, along with an overnight stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite.

Disney has not announced how visitors will enter the contest, saying only that details and official rules will be announced on May 22 at Disneyland.com/DiamondDays. The disclaimer already published on that site says that there is no purchase necessary, but that visitors “must be present on the Disneyland Resort premises” to enter or win the prizes. The contest is open to legal residents of the 50 U.S., D.C., Mexico and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are the age of majority as of date of entry.
Tomorrowland movie preview and exhibit
The Magic Eye Theater hosts a preview of “Tomorrowland,” with a small exhibit of movie props set up in a portion of the adjacent Starcade shop. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
A sneak preview of the upcoming Tomorrowland movie opened last week in Disneyland's Magic Eye Theater, along with an exhibit of props from the film. The 10-minute sneak peek shown in the theater includes some of the footage released in the international version of the Tomorrowland trailer, including portions of the scenes re-creating the 1964 World's Fair, and the “it's a small world” scenes filmed at Disneyland.

There are gadgets and gizmos aplenty in the Hall of Invention display case, but no explanation about how they relate to the film. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The exhibit includes some props shown in the trailer, though very few are tagged or explained in any way. One wall is covered with concept art from the film, and includes a video interview with director Brad Bird. You can walk into the exhibit without seeing the preview if you want, but you'll understand more of what is displayed if you've seen the preview, or at least the international trailer.

60th anniversary 24 hour party details
If you are planning to visit Disneyland during the 24-hour party on May 22, you definitely want to check out the operating schedule that MousePlanet reader corona has been updating on our MousePad discussion forum. His list shows dining availability and entertainment schedules for the event, including the performance schedule for the three new nighttime spectaculars, the “Disneyland Forever” fireworks, Paint the Night parade, and the new World of Color.
Main Street, U.S.A. will be the place to be on May 22, when Disney debuts a new parade and fireworks show. Photo © Disney.
As Friday, May 22, is the first official public performance of these three new shows, it's safe to expect that thousands of people will try to catch all three. At the moment, there is only one performance of “Disneyland Forever” on the schedule, at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks follows the first performance of the new Paint the Night parade at 8:50. There is a second performance of Paint the Night scheduled at 1:00 a.m., and there are three performances of World of Color scheduled, at 9:00 p.m., 10:15 p.m., and 3:00 a.m.
It would be difficult but theoretically possible to see three shows before midnight by staking out a spot on Main Street for the 8:50 p.m. performance of Paint the Night, staying on Main Street to watch “Disneyland Forever” at 9:30 p.m., then rushing to Disney California Adventure for the 10:15 p.m. World of Color (be sure to get a Fastpass for that show earlier in the day).
For those who can stay up all night, a safer bet would be to get a Fastpass or book a dining package for the 9:00 p.m. performance of Fantasmic, which would allow you to stay in the Fantasmic viewing area for the 9:30 p.m. “Disneyland Forever.” You could then take in some rides while waiting for the encore of Paint the Night at 1:00 a.m., then head for the 3:00 a.m. World of Color. This second option avoids what is certain to be an incredibly packed Main Street, and will likely result in a shorter wait for all of the shows. This might be a good night to splurge on the River Belle Terrace dining package, which still has some open availability as of this writing.
Luigi's Festival of the Dance, and other construction news
Based on permits filed with the city of Anaheim, the official name of the replacement for Luigi's Flying Tires in Cars Land is “Luigi's Festival of the Dance.”
Luigi's Flying Tires closed in February, and Disney has not given anymore information about the ride beyond the single piece of concept art released when they announced the closure of the original attraction. The permits include construction of a new “attraction slab,” a vehicle maintenance building, revised barriers and gates, and a modified exit queue.
We also came across a few notes about other refurbishments currently underway at the resort.
Soarin' Over California is closed through May 14 for “updates to its screen and projection system” according to Disney. The “Soarin' Domestic Digital Conversion Project” includes replacing the film projectors with digital equipment and creating a digital media room.
When Disney released concept art from the Peter Pan's Flight renovation, some feared that the new nursery scene would feature digital instead of practical, physical effects. Based on the permit, Disney is adding both “new animated prop figures and special effects” to the ride, so it looks like a combination of practical and digital effects will make the Darling family fly.
The 99-page plan Disney filed related to the Matterhorn refurbishment project won't be public record until later this year, but we do know the renovation includes what is called an “audio show upgrade,” and involves replacing existing speakers and adding new ones.
Finally, Walt Disney Imagineering is placing a temporary construction office trailer behind Hollywood Land. Could it be that WDI is setting up shop for the long-awaited Hollywood Land overhaul?
New perks for DVC members
Disney Vacation Club members can take advantage of four new “Membership Magic” perks that will roll out at the Disneyland Resort this year. Members can book any of these packages through members services starting Tuesday, May 19. Call (800) 800-9800 to book.
Beginning on May 31, DVC members get early access to Anna & Elsa Boutique in Downtown Disney, so they can have their makeovers complete in time to start the day. Sessions are available at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Sundays and Fridays.
Fitness in the Park is a stretching and Pilates class offered at Disney California Adventure on Tuesday mornings from 7 to 8 a.m, starting June 2. There is no cost to participate, but advance reservations are required, and there is a limit of 10 members per session. Participants receive a free souvenir workout towel.
On Thursdays beginning June 4, take part in the Disney Vacation Club Neighborhood Power Walk through Disney California Adventure from 7 to 8 a.m. The one-mile walk ends at the Grand Californian hotel pool, with complimentary Jamba Juice smoothies and 5- to 10-minute Mandara Spa Chair massages. There is no cost to participate, but advance reservations are required. Participants must be at least 14 years old, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Disney Vacation Club Member Movies begin this November, and run through March 2016. The weekly offering includes a movie on the Grand Californian's Parkview Terrace, with complimentary refreshments. Reservations are not required, but there is a limit of 50 people per night.
Allergy-friendly menus introduced at three DLR restaurants
We reported last September that Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort were testing allergy-friendly menus. Disneyland announced earlier this week that these menus are back as a permanent offering at select Disneyland Resort locations.
The new menus identify dishes that contain common allergens such as milk, wheat, and nuts. Each menu offers allergy-friendly options across all categories, including appetizers, entrees, sides, dessert, and children's meals.
For now, the allergy-friendly menus are offered at just three Signature dining locations, but are rolling out to additional table-service and quick-service restaurants throughout 2015. Look for the new menus starting this week at Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure Park, Club 33 at Disneyland Park, and at Napa Rose at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.
This and that…

…California Department of Public Health officials have declared an end to the measles outbreak that began when an infected Disneyland visitor spread the disease to 40 other park guests last December. There have been no new cases reported in the United States in the past 42 days, prompting officials to say that the outbreak is over. A total of 147 cases in the United States were traced to the outbreak, with additional cases reported in Canada and Mexico.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Discounts for Southern California residents | Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
