The weekend of good-byes
Grey skies and sporadic rainstorms seemed to echo the feelings of some Disneyland fans as they turned out last week to bid farewell to some of the shows and attractions closing entirely or being renovated to make room for the upcoming Star Wars Land. As of today, January 11, Big Thunder Ranch BBQ, and the Big Thunder Ranch petting zoo are shuttered forever, along with the Festival Arena, to be included in the footprint of the new expansion.

The Disneyland Railroad and the entire Rivers of America complex, which includes the Mark Twain, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes, and Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, are also closed for at least a year due to the construction. As a result, the Fantasmic nighttime show is on hiatus until the Rivers refill next year.

The cast of Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular took final bows Sunday night. That show closed this weekend to make room for a new stage production based on Frozen.

Unrelated to the construction, but also closed as of today due to refurbishment, are the Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, Autopia and Grizzly River Run. Soarin' Over California is also closed Mondays through Thursdays until further notice to allow for programming to support the new ride film expected to debut this year.
For those wondering about the fate of the Big Thunder Ranch critters, Disney announced this weekend that the goats, sheep and donkeys have a new forever home at a large ranch in Murrieta, California. The ranch already houses four goats previously retired from the ranch. Some of the other animals from the ranch, including the miniature Hereford cow, were adopted by cast members.

Looking ahead
Despite all of the closures at the Disneyland Resort, there are a few new things on the horizon:

Sir Elton John headlines “The Wonderful World of Disney” show; live taping this week at Disneyland
We reported last week that Disney had filed for several permits related to an “ABC Film Shoot” at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. We now know that these permits were for The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60, television show, scheduled to tape on Tuesday, January 12.
Sir Elton John headlines the special, and will debut new song “Wonderful Crazy Night,” the title song from his upcoming album. He will also perform “Circle of Life,” from Disney's The Lion King.
Disney will use virtual reality technology to allow viewers to interact with the televised show in February.
“Fans watching the show at home can participate in Sir Elton's performance with the Disney Applause app. Using Walt Disney Imagineering's Made with Magic technology, Applause delivers a second screen, interactive experience that will sync directly to the broadcast's major musical segments, displaying colorful light shows and original content on viewers' phones. Their display will be in harmony with the illuminated accessories worn by guests and elaborate lighting design during the performance. Disney Applause is available for iOS and Android. Fans will also have a rare opportunity to experience this once-in-a-lifetime performance via virtual reality. Through the use of the Jaunt VR app, fans will join in the celebration as they are instantly transported to Sleeping Beauty Castle for the musical superstar's concert and to Main Street, U.S.A. for a very special dance routine. A 360-degree view of the VR elements will also be available on ABC.com. Jaunt VR is available for iOS, Android and GearVR.”
The website 1iota is handling audience ticketing for the filming. Per their website, the live performances include the a capella group Pentatonix, along with Dancing with the Stars performers Derek Hough and Witney Carson. Tapings are at 5:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.
“The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60” airs Sunday, February 21 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
2016 ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 26 for as little as $149 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week.
The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 26, 2016.
You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up, a $20 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $36 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.
As with the 2014 offer, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($179) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($219) in the promotion.
You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.
If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 19, 2016. Tickets expires May 26, 2016, and are blocked out March 20, 2016 through April 2, 2016.
While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.

All dressed up and nowhere to run – Disney imposes new costume restrictions as Star Wars Half Marathon weekend begins
Thousands of runners were left wondering what to wear to this weekend's 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events, after runDisney released new costume guidelines for its events. The new policy was announced just hours before the 2016 Walt Disney World marathon events began in Florida, forcing many runners to scramble after they learned the outfits they had packed for the race were now banned.
As before, runners age 13 and under can still wear costumes and even masks, so long as they mask does not cover the entire face, and the eyes are visible. The following rules apply to all runners, regardless of age.
- Weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon. Remember that Disney's theme park rules now include water pistols and bubble guns under this category, so make sure your young Buzz Lightyear leaves their Astro Blaster at home.
- Sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
For runners age 14 and older, the rules now also prohibit:
- “Layered costumes that could conceal prohibited items.” Disney specifically provides Jedi robes as an example.
- Costumes that reach or drag on the ground. Disney uses Princess Dresses as an example, so Princess Leia better shorten her skirt before crossing the finish line.
- “Costume props, including those that surround the entire body.” This is bad news for the runners who completed last year's 10K dressed in matching X-Wing costumes, or the runner who carried a cardboard Starspeeder through the race.
- Masks of any kind.
The following items are still allowed, some with restrictions:
- Dresses that do not reach the ground.
- Capes, but only so long as they are no longer than the waist. Aspiring Kylo Rens should visit a tailor this week.
- Hats and headware, so as long as it does not cover the face.
- Transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, and tutus
It would seem that Star Wars runners, who had more warning of the changes, would have an easier time preparing, but conflicting reports of what which costumes were allowed and which were rejected at the Florida events has just added to the anxiety for some. The rule regarding “layered costumes” seems to be prompting the most questions, with runners asking what is considered a “costume,” and what is considered just layered clothing. With the race forecast potentially calling for rain this weekend, runners have asked whether non-transparent coverings like ponchos and foils will be allowed.
2016 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend awakens
The 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend begins this Thursday, January 14, and continues through Sunday, January 17. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, friends, and family to the Disneyland Resort, and includes road closures and operational changes that could impact those visiting during this weekend. Here's what runners, tourists and spectators should know as we head into this busy weekend:
Non-runners
The Disneyland Resort is going to be very busy this weekend, which you may already know if you had a hard time finding a reasonably priced hotel room in the immediate area. The good news is that runners tend not to stay up late the night before races, so you should see lighter evening crowds than you might expect.
Staying at the Disneyland Hotel? The race expo takes place in that hotel's convention center, so expect extra crowds at the shops and restaurants starting Thursday.
If you are staying at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, expect race-related noise on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, beginning in the predawn hours, especially if your hotel room faces Disneyland Drive. If you are staying in a Grand Californian Hotel room that overlooks Downtown Disney, expect to hear spectator cheering starting around 5:45 a.m. on all three days.
While all of the races take place before park opening or outside the parks, you may still experience traffic delays and extra crowds. Give yourself plenty of time if you are driving to the resort in the morning; race-related road closures are scheduled from 12:01 to 8:00 a.m. on Friday; 12:01 to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, and from 12:01 to to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. For detailed road closure information, see pages 14-15 of the event guidebook.

Spectators
Disney does not allow you to view the half-marathon race course from inside either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure unless you purchased a silver ($45), gold ($65), or platinum ($99) ChEAR Squad package. Online registration has ended, but you may be able to purchase packages at the Expo. There is no theme park viewing for the 5K or 10K events.
If you want to come cheer on the runners without purchasing a spectator package, or plan to cheer at the 5K event, Disney recommends specific viewing areas on property. All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot; so walk from either the Mickey and Friends parking structure, or from your hotel if staying nearby.

Detailed information for runners
All of the 5K runners must check in on Thursday (the day before the race), and the Rebel Challenge participants (those running in both Saturday's 10K and Sunday's half-marathon) must check in Thursday or Friday.
Due to the interest in Star Wars and runDisney merchandise, expect a very busy expo experience, especially Thursday morning. If you want first pick of the race merchandise, plan to arrive well before the official 10:00 a.m. opening on Thursday. Based on past events, you would be well-advised to bring water and snacks, along with appropriate protection from the elements to protect you during the wait, be that sunscreen and a hat or a sweatshirt and scarf.
Because the expo remains open until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Friday afternoon may be the best time to attend the expo if all you want to do is get your race packet and get out. If you're running the half marathon, you can visit the expo between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday to get your race gear.

Frozen Musical Details Revealed in Audition Listings
Casting calls have begun for the Frozen musical that will replace Aladdin at the Hyperion Theater in DCA, and the descriptions of the roles reveal some details about what will be included in the show.
All of the principals are listed: Elsa, Anna, Hans, Kristoff, and Olaf. In addition, there are some interesting supporting roles. Sven (Kristoff's reindeer) will be a played by an actor operating a puppet. The trolls will make an appearance, played by actors doubling up on other roles in the ensemble.
Kai and Gerda are a male and female “loyal castle servant,” respectively, who interact with Anna during the time the castle is shuttered. Perhaps a new song or dance number from what appeared in the film?
Everyone's favorite shopkeeper Oaken will appear (hoo-hoo), as well as the Duke of Weselton (not Weaseltown).
You can read more details in the audition listings for AGVA members taking place in North Hollywood. Auditions for the roles of Anna and Elsa are also being held in New York City.
This and that…
…This weekend's changes brought one piece of good news to fans of Paradise Garden Grill – the restaurant has ended the seasonal Viva Navidad menu, and brought back its signature Mediterranean-inspired menu.
…A small chemical spill backstage at Disneyland prompted the park to briefly close Autopia, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Monorail, the Disneyland Railroad and the Star Wars Launch Bay Wednesday. After the chlorine spill was detected at a backstage filtration plant, units from the Anaheim police and fire departments responded to the scene and closed off nearby surface streets. Disney says there were no injuries to park employees or visitors, and the rides all resumed normal operation that day.
…Anaheim fire department also responded to a pizza oven vent fire at the Paradise Pier Hotel Sunday morning. A Disney spokesperson told MousePlanet that this was a small event, and that the restaurant reopened for dinner that evening. There were no injuries reported. The response prompted a precautionary evacuation of the rooms closest to the restaurant, and snarled traffic on the surrounding surface streets for a time.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 4, 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
A Holiday Tote and a Throw Blanket are the two purchase-with-purchase offers at Disneyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
