Catching up
I took a week off from writing this Update last week to visit Walt Disney World and introduce my sons to the Disney Cruise Line. And during our filght to Orlando, Disneyland experienced its first peak-capacity, gate-closing crowds of the 2016 holiday season. Although this was a bit of a surprise, since it happened in the middle of the week, on the first Wednesday of 2017, it was also the first day that the holiday blackouts were lifted for all levels of annual passholders.
With many local or local-enough school districts still closed the entire week after New Year's, passholders returned in droves to take advantage of the few remaining days to experience the holiday festivities at the Disneyland Resort. We don't know to what degree Disneyland managers were prepared for such a strong passholder turnout, but we heard several reports from cast members who were called in or asked to work extended shifts on Wednesday and Thursday because of the high attendance numbers.
It can definitely be said that Disneyland's new attendance strategy worked to reduce passholder crowds and thus make more room for holiday tourists paying the new “peak season” rate for one-day tickets during the 2016 holiday season, but the move also served to condense passholder demand into a very short window once the blockouts lifted in January. It's going to be interesting to see how Disney adapts to that for the 2017–2018 season.
MaxPass
While I was in Florida, I was given a heads up about a pending change to the Fastpass system at Disneyland, and shared the news about Disney's new MaxPass program with MousePlanet readers as soon as the program was officially announced by Disney last Wednesday morning.
Essentially, the change to Disneyland's Fastpass service is happening in two phases. The first is the welcome addition of two additional rides to the Fastpass system: Toy Story Mania in Disney California Adventure and the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland.
The second phase bundles the existing PhotoPass product with a still-in-development digital Fastpass tool in the Disneyland mobile application—a change that can potentially drastically alter the way you use the Fastpass system.
Fastpass is coming to the Matterhorn Bobsleds; visitors will soon be able to claim Fastpass tickets using the new MaxPass service on the Disneyland mobile application. MousePlanet file photo.
MaxPass includes unlimited downloads of PhotoPass photos taken for each day that the entitlement is valid. It also allows visitors to collect and redeem Fastpass tickets using the app, instead of collecting paper Fastpass tickets.
Visitors can add Disney's MaxPass to their theme park tickets for an “introductory price” of $10 per ticket, per day. Users can choose to purchase the MaxPass for their entire length of stay, or for one or more days. Annual passholders will also be able to purchase MaxPass by the day, or add it to their pass for the year (for an as-yet unannounced price).
The standard Fastpass system will still be available at no charge to visitors who do not purchase the MaxPass product. However, don't look for a loophole that would let you double-dip and collect both paper and digital Fastpass tickets. Once you activate MaxPass for the day, you cannot use your admission ticket to collect paper Fastpass tickets for that day.
While this is a change for Disneyland's Fastpass system, this is not the West Coast implementation of Fastpass Plus as some rumors have suggested, nor should you expect to be outfitted with a MagicBand wristband anytime soon. Fastpass may be getting a shiny new digital interface, but the nuts and bolts of the program remain the same.
Unlike the Fastpass Plus system at Walt Disney World (which allow users to select Fastpass reservations days, weeks or even months in advance), MaxPass does not allow advanced or off-property planning. It is still a same-day program, with users activating the entitlement for the day that they visit the park.
Users must physically be inside a theme park to collect a digital Fastpass to use the same day, although MaxPass users need not walk to their selected attraction to claim a Fastpass ticket. MaxPass users can walk onto Main Street, U.S.A. and claim a Fastpass for Splash Mountain if they want, without ever stepping foot in Critter Country. The MaxPass app also allows users to claim a Fastpass for a ride in the other theme park, so a user in Disneyland could claim a Fastpass for Radiator Springs Racers before park-hopping.
Disney managers test Fastpass portals at Space Mountain in spring 2016. MousePlanet file photo.
Regardless of how users obtain their Fastpass, they are still subject to the same policies. Tickets are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis. In general, users cannot obtain another Fastpass until either two hours after they obtain the first Fastpass, or at the start of the return window of the first Fastpass, whichever comes first. You can cancel a previously selected Fastpass using the app, freeing you up to collect another Fastpass more quickly.
When it comes time to ride, MaxPass users will likely scan a barcode displayed from the screen of their mobile app at a new portal installed at the Fastpass return gate. Paper Fastpass ticket holders will scan the barcode on their ticket to access the return queue. Disney has been testing these portals at various times for well over a year, and recently issued building permits indicate that installation is ready to proceed.
Families or groups of friends travelling together can opt to have one member of their party manage the Fastpass tickets for the entire group if they want from one digital device, provided each member of the party has purchased the MaxPass entitlement.
When the product launches, visitors will only be able to collect Fastpass tickets for rides using the MaxPass system. Fastpass and ShowPass tickets (for entertainment offerings like World of Color, Fantasmic or “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion”) will not be offered via the app, and park visitors will still need to collect and redeem paper tickets for those shows.
The current paper Fastpass system will still be available to visitors who choose not to pay for the new MaxPass. MousePlanet file photo.
The $10 per-ticket, per-day price point for day guests is intriguing, if only because that is $29 less than the cost of the current Disney PhotoPass+ One Day offering. Fastpass element aside, it's cheaper to add MaxPass onto one member of the party just to receive the PhotoPass benefit.
As for the Fastpass benefit, it's really hard to say right now if that alone is worth the added cost. Signature and Premier passholders who already receive PhotoPass downloads as part of the price of their annual pass will especially want to look at the final pricing for passholders, and decide of the Fastpass benefit alone is worth the add-on cost.
There are still so many details we don't know about MaxPass, and Disney acknowledges that the product is still under development. As such, it's somewhat difficult to say if the cost is worth it. The reality is that the value will very much depend on the makeup, preferences, and needs of each group. Families with younger children who tend not to ride the big Fastpass rides may not find the Fastpass aspect worth it, but find $10 a day an absolute steal for the PhotoPass benefit. Now that I'm a parent, the PhotoPass product has become one of my favorite perks of the annual passport.
While families with teenagers who live for the thrill rides may appreciate the convenience of the Fastpass aspect of the program, isn't the role of the teenager in each group to act as the “Fastpass runner” and collect tickets for everyone else? Why pay for the service when you can just send your eldest child off to Space Mountain while you grab a mocha at Starbucks?
This isn't to say that there isn't a customer for the service, but to say that the service may not be targeted to everyone. Disney visitors need to decide—just as with premium parade dining packages, added-cost dessert parties or after-hours special events—whether it makes sense for their family.
2017 ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 25 for as little as $149 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week.
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017.
You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up.
However you run the numbers, this ticket represents a substantial discount for Southern California families willing to visit during “Value Season,” when many rides are closed for refurbishment and there is no major seasonal promotion underway. For those who like statistics, here are some interesting ways to look at this offer:
For ages 10 and up, the 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket is:
- $106 off the box office price of the same ticket.
- A 42% discount off the box office price of the same ticket.
- The same price as the 2016 2-day ticket, but comes with an extra day.
- $30 less than the same offer in 2016.
- $10 less than the same offer in 2014.
- The same price as visiting Disneyland three times in 2004
You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.
You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.
If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9 through April 23, 2017.
While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.
Now for the official fine print:
3-Day Promotional Ticket
- Valid only for Southern California residents within ZIP codes 90000-93599 and Northern Baja California residents within ZIP codes 21000-22999; proof of residency is required for purchase and admission.
- 3-Day, 1-Park Per Day Ticket is valid for admission for three (3) days to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure Park, but not to both parks on the same day.
- 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Ticket is valid for admission for three (3) days to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park on the same day.
- Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
- Tickets expire May 25, 2017.
- Blockout days of April 9 through April 23, 2017 apply.
- May purchase up to 5 tickets per person per day with valid I.D.
- Tickets may not be sold or transferred for commercial use.
- Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions.
- Tickets not valid before January 9, 2017
- Subject to capacity, restrictions and change without notice.

Main Street Electrical Parade returns this Friday
It's a moment that most Disneyland fans thought would never happen. More than 20 years after a summer-long “glowing away” promotion that set attendance records at Disneyland, the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade returns this Friday night, January 20. While the parade came back to California in 2001 to help spark interest in the then-new Disney's California Adventure theme park, it seemed impossible that the parade Disneyland said was gone “forever” would ever return to Main Street, U.S.A.
But return it has, for a “limited-time” engagement that will see the parade perform nightly through June 18, weather permitting. The parade will be led by the original Main Street Electrical Parade opening float, the classic drum unit that inspired one of the floats in the Paint the Night parade. Making the return to Disneyland are the 16-foot-tall Elliot from Pete's Dragon, Cinderella's clock tower unit, and the “To Honor America” patriotic finale float.
The Peter Pan, Snow White, Pinocchio, and Alice in Wonderland units last seen at Disney California Adventure will all return to Disneyland. The Tinker Bell hot air balloon float will not be in this version of the parade, but Tinker Bell will appear on the Peter Pan unit. The Blue Fairy float and Dumbo Circus units are no longer part of the procession.
Disney has not given any indication what will happen to the parade after this new run ends. There have also been no announcements regarding Disney's future plans for the Paint the Night Parade, which was billed as the technological successor to the Main Street Electrical Parade when it debuted in 2015 for Disneyland's 60th Anniversary celebration.
If you can't wait until Friday to watch the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade, tickets are still available for a private premiere event on Thursday, January 19, one night before the parade opens to the general public. The event is characterized as being something like Mickey's Halloween Party, but with a much smaller attendance cap. The park closes to the public at 6:00 p.m. that evening, and reopens at 7:00 p.m. to event guests. The event officially kicks off at 7:30 p.m., and runs until midnight.
Along with the premiere performance of the Main Street Electrical Parade, the event includes a “red carpet arrival,” with a step-and-repeat photo opportunity as you enter the park. Attendees will have the first chance to purchase commemorative merchandise created for the Main Street Electrical Parade's return to Disneyland, and can purchase specialty food and beverage offerings from participating restaurants.
There will be new Magic Shots available from the PhotoPass photographers, and a '70s Dance Party at the Tomorrowland Terrace.
Tickets are $95 per person, and includes parking. Buy tickets at Disneyland ticket booths, or by phone at (714) 781-4636.
Lunar New Year
Friday also marks the start of the 2017 Lunar New Year festival at Disney California Adventure, the longest such festival the park has hosted to date. The park celebrates the Year of the Rooster at the park January 20 through February 5, and includes a brand new pre-show for the World of Color show. Hurry Home – Lunar New Year Celebration is an eight-minute mini-show to be presented before the start of each performance of the World of Color, and stars Mulan and Mushu from the animated film Mulan.
As in past years, the Lunar New Year event will feature live entertainment, and photo opportunities with Disney characters in themed costumes. The 2017 event promises an expanded offering of foods from China, Korea, and Vietnam, along with merchandise created for the event.
2017 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival
Disney has announced the return of the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, to be held March 10 through April 16. The event is a week longer than the 2016 edition, and will feature even more Festival Marketplace booths.
The 2017 event also includes the return of the signature dinners that were offered as part of the original iteration of the Food and Wine Festival before it took a multi-year hiatus as part of the DCA expansion project. Disney has not released the line-up of premium events, but tickets go on sale Wednesday, February 1, so details should be announced shortly.
If you missed the 2016 event, read all about it in Your Guide to the 2016 Disney California Food & Wine Festival here on MousePlanet. We'll publish an updated version for 2017, along with the popular weekly guides to help make the most of your visit to the event.
2017 Military Salute update
Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017.
At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel.
From January 1 to December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort.
We've recapped the 2017 Military Salute offer below, and you can find all of the detailed terms and conditions on our MousePad discussion forum.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition, or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
- Lunar New Year Celebration –Friday, January 20 through Sunday, February 5

- D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Customers can add a Snowman Mickey tote or Disneyland castle throw blanket to their qualifying purchase for $20. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
