Holidays at the Disneyland Resort
The great Mickey pumpkin has barely departed Main Street for the year, and already it's time for peppermint everything. Holidays at the Disneyland Resort officially begins this Thursday, November 9, and runs through January 7, 2018.
Even though the refurbishment of Disneyland's west side is mostly finished and the Star Wars Land construction isn't impacting park operations, the holiday focus remains on Disney California Adventure this year. Just announced last week are two holiday overlays for Cars Land attractions, “Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl” and “Mater’s Jingle Jamboree.” Each holiday overlay features new songs recorded for the attractions.
Another holiday overlay is planned for Cars Land. Photo © Disney.
There was no specific mention of a new “lighting moment” for Cars Land, but given that the nightly tree lighting on Buena Vista Street was moved by 5 minutes this year to take place at sunset, it seems likely there will be something happening in Cars Land as well. For the Halloween Time promotion, the lighting moments on Buena Vista Street and in Cars Land were synchronized, to avoid having a wave of people move from one location to the other to catch both.
The Festival of Holidays returns to DCA for a second year, with entertainment and food offerings themed to winter celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and Three Kings Day. Returning performing groups Blue13 Dance Company and Mostly Kosher are joined by a new a capella group The Sound. Also returning are the Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party and Princess Elena's Musical Grand Arrival.
Visitors are encouraged to dance to live music during the new nightly Holiday Sunset Concerts in Paradise Park. Phat Cat Swinger performs Fridays through Mondays, and the Mariachi Divas take the stage Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Santa will spend time at both the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in DCA and and Pooh Corner in Disneyland this year, and will appear in A Christmas Fantasy Parade at Disneyland.
There's no Jingle Cruise for Disneyland this year, but “it's a small world” holiday reopens on Friday for the season. The nightly lighting moment takes place at 5:15 p.m. most nights. The brief “Wintertime Enchantment” of Sleeping Beauty Castle takes place twice most nights, with projections on the castle and snow in the immediate area.
If you want to see the new and returning holiday entertainment during opening weekend, here is the schedule of the major shows. Check the Disneyland website or the printed times guide for a complete list of the smaller park atmosphere groups scheduled in both parks, especially at Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland to celebrate Mickey's birthday
The Disney company is marking Mickey Mouse's upcoming birthday with a series of appearances around the globe this month, surprising fans in eight locations with an unexpected visit. The world tour wraps up on November 15, when the main mouse pays a visit to Good Morning America. You can follow the antics on the official Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as by tracking the hash tag #HappyBirthdayMickey

Mickey's birthday is Saturday, November 18, and that's when Disneyland will commemorate the occasion with a character cavalcade and performance by the Disneyland Band. Park visitors will also receive a commemorative Happy Birthday, Mickey! button that day.
Pixar takes over the Pier
Disney has finally released details of the upcoming Pixar Pier retheme of the Paradise Pier district, originally announced at the 2017 D23 Expo and not mentioned since. Fans who hoped or believed this was just a temporary overlay now know this is a permanent makeover for this section of Disney California Adventure.

Disney will divide the current Paradise Pier area into four “neighborhoods.” Three of the neighborhoods will be themed to a single Pixar property: The Incredibles, Toy Story, and Inside Out. The Incredibles section is anchored by The Incredicoaster, a permanent retheme of California Screamin'. Disney says the ride will feature a new vehicle, new effects, some form of “character moment,” and a new load area.

The Toy Story neighborhood includes Toy Story Midway Mania, and will probably mean a new theme for the adjacent turkey leg cart. King Triton's Carousel also seems to now be part of the Toy Story neighborhood. Disney's announcement made no mention of any plans for the carousel, and the artwork lends no clues.

A new ride based on Inside Out is planned for the western side of Paradise Pier, on the pad which previously held the Maliboomer. From the concept art, this looks like a duplicate of Flik's Flyers from A Bug's Land. Disney says this ride will open at a later date.

The fourth neighborhood is sort of an “everything else” area, themed to the rest of Pixar's animated feature films and iconic shorts. While Mickey's Fun Wheel will still feature Mickey's smiling face looking out over Paradise Bay, each of the gondolas will be painted with a different Pixar character. The Games of the Boardwalk will also get a Pixar makeover, with new carnival games inspired by “A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” and “WALL·E.”
Ariel's Grotto and the Cove Bar will both get Pixar overlays, and will also close January 8. Disney suggests that people looking for World of Color dining packages during construction book meals at Carthay Circle of Wine Country Trattoria. There has been no word as to a possible replacement for the Princess character meal currently offered at Ariel's Grotto.
Everything between Silly Symphony Swings and The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, including the Paradise Gardens area, will become a new land called Paradise Park.
Work begins January 8 with the closure of California Screamin’, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Ariel’s Grotto, the Cove Bar, Games of the Boardwalk and Sideshow Shirts.
Disney says the new land is expected to debut during the Pixar Fest promotion which begins April 13, though The Incredicoaster opens in June, around the release of The Incredibles 2.

Downtown Disney holiday events on sale now
Now is the time to make reservations for two popular annual holiday events in Downtown Disney These events tend to sell out quickly each year, so it's a good idea to book as soon as you can decide on a date.
Gingerbread Workshop at Jazz Kitchen
This event is hosted three times this year: December 9, 10 and 16. New for 2017, participants can opt for a brunch and building package, or just come for the construction party.
The Workshop and Dining package is a 3-hour event. Participants can feast at the Ralph Brennan's brunch buffet from 11:00 to Noon, and enjoy unlimited soft drinks. After brunch, participants stay for the gingerbread house workshop. The package is $40 per adult, and $25 per child age 3-10. Gingerbread house kits are $25 each, and come with the pre-formed gingerbread slabs, icing, candy decorations and a jingle bell. Each party must purchase at least one gingerbread kit for their group, but may purchase additional kits if some members want to build their own house.
The Workshop Only package includes admission to the two hour workshop, where you pair up with a friend or family member to create and decorate your own gingerbread house, which you get to take home. The price is $48 for two people, which includes one gingerbread kit, with additional seats available for $20 each. Tickets for this package are limited, and the restaurant will no longer offer menu service during the workshop portion of the event.
Tickets go on sale Monday November 7 at 10:00 a.m., and we expect will fill quickly. Book via the event website.
Tip: you can bring your own candy, icing and other decorations if you want to go above and beyond that which is provided by the chefs. The first year we attended, we assumed everyone would be working with the same ingredients, and were in awe of the elaborate creations produced by returning gingerbread builders. Kids will definitely have a great time building their houses with the supplied materials (and eating half of the candies before they make it onto the roof), but feel free to bring more supplies and really get creative if you wish.
Breakfast with Santa at Catal
Catal restaurant in Downtown Disney has expanded the popular Breakfast with Santa event for the 2017 season, with continuous seatings between 8 a.m. and Noon on December 9, 10, 16, 17, 21, 22 and 23. As we reported, tickets went on sale back in July, but space is still available for most dates.
- Available: December 16, 17, 21 and 22
- Sold Out: December 9, 10 and 23
The event includes family-style breakfast at Catal restaurant in Downtown Disney, live entertainment, a photo opportunity with Santa Claus, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop teddy bear for each child.
Tickets are $75 per adult (a $15 jump from 2016), and $30 per child ages 3 to 10. Children 2 and under are free, but must be counted in the party size. Book online via the Patina Group website. Note: All sales are final.
Runners assemble for one last runDisney race weekend
The fourth and possibly final Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend begins this Thursday, November 9, and continues through Sunday, November 12. This weekend's event is expected to draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, friends, and family to the Disneyland Resort, and includes road closures and operational changes that could impact anyone visiting during this weekend. Here's what runners, tourists and spectators should know as we head into this busy holiday race weekend.
Last chance to run in Anaheim for a while
This is the final runDisney on the calendar for the West Coast, with future race events put on “hiatus” until at least the 2020 season due to construction projects throughout the Disneyland Resort.
For those who want to get in one more race around Anaheim before the hiatus, registration is still open for the Super Heroes Half Marathon event, though runDisney has added a $12 “late registration” fee to the $185 event price, and warns that corral placement is based on availability, and shirt sizes are not guaranteed.
Key points for non-runners
The Disneyland Resort is going to be very busy this weekend. The race falls during the start of the 2017 holiday celebration at the Disneyland Resort, as well as over the long Veteran's Day Weekend, so expect larger than normal crowds by race weekend standards. While runners tend not to stay up late the night before races, folks visiting to see the new nighttime holiday entertainment will keep the parks hopping well after dark.
Staying at the Disneyland Hotel? The race expo takes place in that hotel's convention center, so expect extra crowds at the shops and restaurants. If you are staying at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, expect race-related noise Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, beginning in the predawn hours, especially if your hotel room faces Disneyland Drive. If you are staying at the Grand Californian Hotel in a room overlooking Downtown Disney, expect to hear spectator cheering starting around 5:45 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
While all of the races take place before park opening or outside the parks, you may still experience traffic delays and extra crowds. Give yourself plenty of time if driving to the resort in the morning; race-related road closures are scheduled from 12:01 to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, and from 12:01 to to 9:45 a.m. on Sunday. For detailed road closure information, see page 10 of the event guidebook.
Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Early entry for hotel guests and eligible ticket holders is at 8:00 a.m. at Disney California Adventure on Friday, at Disneyland on Saturday, and back at DCA on Sunday.

Key points for spectators
Disney does not allow you to view the half-marathon race course from inside Disneyland park unless you purchase a $79 ChEAR Squad package. Online registration is still open, and you may also be able to purchase packages at the Expo. There is no half marathon viewing inside Disney California Adventure, and no theme park viewing for the 5K or 10K events.
If you want to come cheer on the runners without purchasing a spectator package, or plan to cheer at the Friday's 3.1-mile 5K or Saturday's 6.2-mile 10K events, Disney recommends specific viewing areas on property. All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot; so walk from either the Mickey and Friends parking structure, or from your hotel if staying nearby.

Runner tracking
You can register to receive runner tracking updates via text message, Twitter, or Facebook. Sign up via the runDisney webform, or text “SH ” to 38909.
Just for runners
The event guide is only available in digital format again for this event, so be sure to take a look before you head to Anaheim. Corral, bib assignment and waivers are all available on the runDisney website now, and you should double-check that your information is correct.
Expo info
If you want first pick of the race merchandise, plan to arrive well before the official 10:00 a.m. opening on Thursday. Based on past events, you would be well-advised to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect you during the wait. Remember, you do not need to collect your race packet before you enter the expo to shop, so if you want the best selection Thursday morning, your best bet is to shop first, then get your race packet.
Because the Expo remains open until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Friday afternoon may be the best time to attend the expo if all you want to do is get your race packet and get out. If you're running the half marathon, you can visit the Expo between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday to get your race gear.
Parking and ART shuttles
Disney charges runners to park in the Mickey and Friends parking structure during the race expo and on race morning. If you are an annual passholder with parking benefits, be sure to bring along your AP. If you are staying at an Anaheim-area hotel on the ART (Anaheim Resort Transportation Network) line, free shuttles run every 20 minutes during the events; consult the race guide for full details.
In a welcome change from the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, registered runners can receive 2 hours complimentary parking when they park in the Downtown Disney parking lot for the race expo. Be sure to take your parking ticket with you when you leave your car. After you pick up your race bib, take your bib and parking ticket to the Parking Validation booth on the lower level of the expo (the same level where you get your bib) to receive the validation stamp. This stamp covers the first two hours of Downtown Disney parking only; additional hours are charged in 30-minute increments at $12 per hour.
Come cheer with Team MousePlanetWith just one Disneyland Resort event left on the calendar, Team MousePlanet is pulling out all the stops for our cheer station at the halfway point of the 2017 Super Heroes Half Marathon on Sunday, November 12. 2017
- Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort: November 10, 2017 through January 7, 2018.
- Candlelight Ceremony and Processional – Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, with two performances each night.
2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – Cancelled
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Cancelled
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |
