Disneyland Resort Update for October 15 – 21, 2018

Disneyland cancels planned fourth hotel
Disneyland has shelved plans to build a fourth hotel at the Resort.
Nearly two months after Disney put construction of a planned fourth hotel at the Disneyland Resort on “indefinite hold,” and following Disney's request to cancel its participation in a controversial tax rebate intended to encourage investment in Anaheim, the company announced last week it has canceled the project altogether.
In a written statement, Disneyland spokeswoman Liz Jaeger said:
“We’ve taken the time to review the economics of our proposed Four Diamond hotel for Anaheim and have made the final decision to cancel the project. While this is disappointing for many, the conditions and agreements that stimulated this investment in Anaheim no longer exist and we must therefore adjust our long-term investment strategy.”
When Disney first announced the fourth hotel in 2016, it was to have been built on the corner of Disneyland Drive and Magic Way, on land currently used as the Downtown Disney parking lot. That project qualified for the Hotel Incentive Program approved by the Anaheim city council in 2015, under which Disney could retain 70 percent of the transit occupancy tax paid by visitors for the first 20 years of operation. The city would collect all of the tax, which currently adds 15 percent to the cost of a hotel room in Anaheim. The tax rebate was estimated to be worth $267 million to Disney over 20 years.
The then-newly elected Anaheim city council voted to end the incentive in December 2016, although Disney's already-approved project was grandfathered in, as were two projects by the Wincome Group.
But in October 2017, Disney announced that it would move the planned site of the 700-room hotel to the west side of Downtown Disney, about 1,000 feet from the original address. To make room for the new development, Disney closed five popular locations this summer, including the AMC Theater, the last operating ESPN Zone restaurant, the Rainforest Cafe, the relatively new Earl of Sandwich, and the district's second Starbucks location.
Demolition on the vacant buildings was to have begun in July, but days before the project was slated for final approval by the Anaheim planning commission, the City of Anaheim notified Disney:
“It is the city’s position that Disney would not be entitled to the tax rebate were it to move forward under its current hotel construction plans.”
Disney put the entire project on hold and canceled all scheduled planning meetings with the City of Anaheim while it considered its options. A few days later, Disney asked to cancel its participation in two tax rebate agreements with the City, a move the city council approved.
Now that Disney has canceled the hotel complex, the question becomes: what will the company do with the vacant buildings on the west side of Downtown Disney? The company says it has no plans to announce at this time, but noted that the Earl of Sandwich location reopened last week.
If we were to speculate, it would be a relatively easy matter to reopen the second Starbucks location, which could likely serve up espresso again by Halloween. It won't be so simple to find new operating partners for the shuttered ESPN Zone and Rainforest Cafe spaces, nor does it necessarily make sense for Disney to reopen one or both as restaurants.
In the midst of all of the Downtown Disney changes, two new eateries are slated to open this fall: Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer, and Ballast Point Brewery. Also under construction is an expansion of the Naples/Napolini restaurant duo, and a new Salt & Straw ice cream shop.
The AMC Theater could reopen, although there are signs some demolition work had already begun inside the building. Earlier this year, the Garden Walk shopping center across from Disneyland announced that AMC would open a six-screen multiplex in the center in 2019.
As for future hotel development, it will likely be several years before Disney makes a move in that direction—and it might not happen in Anaheim.
In the upcoming November elections, Anaheim residents will elect a new mayor and fill three council seats. Residents will also vote whether to approve Measure L, a living wage initiative for businesses within the Anaheim Resort district that accept tax incentives. Though the Anaheim city attorney recently issued an opinion that Disney will not be subject to that law should it pass, proponents of the measure disagree and have threatened to take the matter to court. For its part, Disney has previously said it will look outside Anaheim for future development opportunities if that initiative passes.
In response to Disney's announcement, Todd Ament, CEO and President of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, issued the following statement on behalf of the No on Measure L campaign:
“Measure L contributed to the harsh political rhetoric and poor business climate in Anaheim, and that led to the cancellation of Disney’s 4th hotel. The jobs lost and future tax revenue eliminated from this news is devastating to Anaheim, and a direct result of special interests trying to pit too many in Anaheim against each other. Let’s vote No on Measure L and send a message that we all want to work together for an Anaheim in which we all win together, not at each other’s expense.”
Depending on what happens in that election and in terms of Disney's relationship with the City of Anaheim in coming months and years, the company may just take a second look at building in neighboring Garden Grove when it decides the time has come to expand again.
Salt & Straw opens in Downtown Disney
Salt & Straw is now open in Downtown Disney, bringing the Portland-based ice cream shop to Anaheim. The company prides itself on “taste-provoking ice cream” made with unique ingredients like Bee Local honey from Portland, San Francisco's Sightglass Coffee and Dandelion Chocolate, Lucky Charms cereal, and house-made caramel.

The menu of milk-based and vegan ice cream flavors is available by the scoop in cups or cones, and also by the pint from a self-serve case near the exit. Each scoop shop has a collection of “classic” flavors available year-round, plus an assortment of seasonal flavors.
For October, the Downtown Disney location serves up The Great Candycopia, which Salt & Straw describes as “a trick-or-treat bag of candy turned inside out and jammed into an ice cream maker,” and Mummy's Pumpkin Spiced Potion, a vegan take on a pumpkin spice latte. For the truly adventurous, Creepy Crawly Critters has matcha (green tea) ice cream mixed with real dark chocolate-covered crickets and coconut toffee-brittle mealworms.

Salt & Straw was ready for big opening day crowds with a large staff, including several people who circulated among the waiting crowd to pass out menus and make suggestions. There are bound to be questions when you sell flavors like black olive and goat cheese, or strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper, and the staff were knowledgeable and informative. The scoopers are also quick to offer a sample of a flavor to help you find a flavor you love.
Once at the counter, each Salt & Straw scooper asks if anyone in the party has any allergies or dietary restrictions. As it happens, I am allergic to coconut, which is the base for all of the shop's vegan flavors. After taking my order, the scooper first checked with a manager to ensure that my selection was coconut-free, then went to the self-service case to pull out sealed pint containers of my selected flavors. She then took a new scoop from under the counter and scooped my order from the new pint containers to ensure that there was no possibility of cross-contamination. This level of caution around food allergies is something I usually find only at Disney-operated restaurants, and it was very reassuring to experience here.

This Salt & Straw location sells scoops by the cone or cup, and you can add-ons include a fresh waffle cone, sprinkles, or hot fudge. They do not offer the sundaes, floats, or milkshakes sold at other locations, likely to speed service through the small shop. Prices start at $6 for a single scoop to $12 for a pint.
Disney plans pedestrian bridge to Downtown Disney
Although Disney has canceled plans for a new resort hotel in Anaheim, the company is going forward with plans to build a pedestrian bridge that will link the new Cleo parking structure to Downtown Disney. The bridge will span Magic Way and eliminate the need to cross at street level.
The new bridge is expected to open in 2019. Disney has not described where the Downtown Disney side of the bridge will connect.

UEA weekend and fall breaks
Expect a busy week at the Disneyland Resort this week, as Utah students and families take advantage of a fall break that is usually scheduled around the annual Utah Education Association convention, As it happens, the 2018 UEA convention was canceled, but not before most school districts finalized their academic calendars for the year. This means the schools are still closed, and it's safe to expect the same holiday-level crowds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 19–21.
Some readers already noticed an early crush of visitors this week, as many Arizona districts and some Utah schools observe their fall break this week.
Disneyland rolls out new stroller fleet
Disneyland has been slowly replacing its aging stroller fleet with a new model, and there are now enough of the new versions in circulation that you have a good chance of getting one the next time you rent a stroller at the resort.
Disneyland's new rental stroller is on the left, with the older model on the right. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The old stroller was a customized version of the Baby Jogger Q-series stroller, with a fixed fabric seat, small canopy, storage pouch, and under-seat storage compartment. The molded plastic seat of the new model does not recline, although the large canopy offers a bit more sun protection. There is no under-seat storage, and the seat-back pouch is too small to hold much more than a guide map. However, the new stroller does offer a mesh bottle holder. The handle bar of the new stroller is higher than the previous model, which is great for tall moms and dads.

Disneyland offers only single strollers, which rent for $15 per day. Instead of a double stroller, the park rents two strollers for $25 per day. The stroller rental desk is outside the Disneyland main entrance, next to the kennel. Strollers can be used inside Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and the Downtown Disney district, but can not be taken beyond the security checkpoints or into the hotels.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 1, 2018.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
