Disneyland Resort Update for May 8, 2023
News and Views
Grad Nites begin this week
The 2023 Grad Nite season kicks off this week, with the first event taking place this Friday, May 12, and the second on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14. The after-hours events take place on select nights through June 16.
Grad Nite 2023 begins this week at Disney California Adventure. Photo courtesy Disney.
For 2023, grads had three ticket options. Many schools come just for the after-hours private party inside Disney California Adventure, which closes to the public at 9:00 p.m. each event night. Other schools opt to spend the day at Disney California Adventure, and then stay for the private grad nite event.
Some students splurge on a ticket that includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and then head to their private party in Disney California Adventure.
Schools that booked packages with theme park admission can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. Expect heavier arrival traffic in the Toy Story parking lot, which is where school buses now park. You should also expect to see the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on as more students arrive.
Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.
With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there's no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.
If you're planning a visit during this period, be sure to consult the schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately. For 2023, Grad Nite events are held on May 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24, 25, 30, and 31; June 2, 4, 7, 9, 14, and 16
Separate from these are still two more Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite this week, on Monday, May 8 and Thursday, May 11. During the final week of the Grad Nite season, the graduation events alternate with the new Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite events on June 13 and 15.
Mother's Day and Father's Day at Disneyland
If you haven't already made reservations for one of the Mother's Day brunch options at the Disneyland Resort by now, the truth is you're likely out of luck. Reservations open 60 days in advance, and the most popular spots have long since reached capacity. The situation is a bit worse in 2023, with Catal and the French Market both closed (remind me again why Disneyland canceled the Grand Ballroom Mother's Day brunch).
That said, if you're celebrating Mother's Day at the Disneyland Resort, there are a few quick-service ways to treat mom without spending precious park time at brunch. The reliable Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe has a raspberry-and-champagne-glazed donut garnished with edible flowers, and is always a solid choice for a quick breakfast or lunch (be sure to use Mobile Order to avoid the line).
You can pick up an assortment of chocolate-dipped treats at locations in both parks including Candy Palace, Candy Kitchen and Pooh’s Corner (Disneyland); Trolley Treats and Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff (Disney California Adventure); as well as Marceline’s Confectionery in Downtown Disney.
Disney California Adventure also has a Mother's Day sundae at Clarabelle's Hand-Scooped Ice Cream, with strawberry and chocolate ice cream served in a waffle cup, topped with strawberry sauce, whipped cream, and chocolate butterflies.
If you have your heart set on a sit-down meal, River Belle Terrace is serving a special turkey dinner that looks straight out of Thanksgiving cookbook, but at least at press time had a lunch reservations still available.
While the Plaza Inn Mother's Day brunch is already booked, you can stop to check on walk-up availability. Or come back after 1:00 p.m. for a late lunch or early dinner with no reservations required. The restaurant is famous for its fried chicken and pasta dishes, but the Chipotle-Pineapple Glazed Salmon added to the menu earlier this year is a worthy option.
Looking ahead to Father's Day, at press time there were lots of availability for the Plaza Inn Father's Day brunch, a character event starring Goofy and Max and featuring a special buffet menu. The meal is available from 8:00 a.m. to noon, with reservations available through the Disneyland app. Pricing is $75 for ages 10 and up; $35 for ages 3 to 9.
Though Goofy's Kitchen and Storytellers Cafe don't advertise a special Father's Day meal, both have brunch availability as of press time.
Entertainment notes
Fantasmic is on hiatus at least through May 28, according to Disneyland officials, following the April 22 fire that destroyed the Maleficent dragon prop. However, the attraction has also been removed from the entertainment calendar, which runs (as of press time) though June 18.
Disney will test keeping the Incredicoaster open during performances of World of Color: One. MousePlanet file photo.
Fire effects continue to be suspended on other Disneyland Resort shows, including World of Color: One and the Wondrous Journeys fireworks show. With fire effects not running, the Orange County Register reports that Disney California Adventure will run the Incredicoaster, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind and Jumpin’ Jellyfish during World of Color: One on select nights as a test. The three rides usually close during the performance, as does Jessie's Critter Carousel and the Pixar Pal-A-Round.
Disneyland Forward Community Events
Anaheim residents and interested locals have been invited to attend a series of Community Coffee events with Disneyland Resort representatives to review the DisneylandForward expansion plan and ask questions about the project, first announced in 2021. The events have been running since May 2022, but the Orange County Register recently brought them back into public attention.

This and That
Peter Pan's Flight is slated to be closed longer than Alice in Wonderland and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. MousePlanet file photo.
…We shared last week that Peter Pan's Flight, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and Alice in Wonderland are all scheduled to close for refurbishment on June 5. We now see that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Alice in Wonderland are scheduled to reopen on June 16, so their refurbishment will be much shorter than some had feared. Peter Pan's Flight is still showing as closed at least through June 18. The three Fantasyland attractions share a show building.
…The Inspire Key was still available as of press time, nearly three weeks after Disney resumed sales of new Magic Key passes. The other three tiers are sold out. Magic Keys are available only from the Disneyland website.
…Tickets are still available for the brand-new Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite event on June 13. The June 15 event is now sold out. Details and ticket sales available on the Disneyland website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2022.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
