News and Views
Transition weeks ahead
The next two weeks are full of transitions in the skies above Disneyland, as the Wondrous Journeys fireworks show briefly gives way to Mickey’s Mix Magic for 10 days, before the new Together Forever fireworks begin. At Disney California Adventure, this is the final full week of the California Food and Wine Festival before Pixar Fest begins in both parks. Season of the Force is still going strong, and the Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nites kick off this Tuesday. Tickets are still available via the event website for all of the April event dates, but the three Nites in May have sold out.
Disneyland updates Disability Access Service
The biggest Disney news of last week was a pending change to the Disability Access Service, or DAS. These changes take effect on May 20 at Walt Disney World, and on June 18 at the Disneyland Resort, and will change the way many guests with disabilities plan their next visit to the parks.
You can read the full article here on MousePlanet, but the biggest change is that Disney has reframed the purpose of the DAS, saying it is intended “only those Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.”
Guests with other disabilities are encouraged to make use of other services, like using the Disney Genie service to locate rides with shorter wait times, using rider switch when one member of a party can’t stand in a long queue, or even using the Single Riders lanes for faster boarding. One new service is a “return to queue” option to accommodate guests who need to leave a queue before it’s their time to ride, for example to use the bathroom or take medications. We don’t have specifics on how this will work, but it sounds like it will help address a certain set of needs.
Visitors who believe they qualify for a DAS, or who believe they have needs not addressed by the other sercvices offered, are strongly encouraged to contact Disney 2-30 days in advance of their visit to discuss their needs. This process is done via a pre-arrival video chat with a Disney cast member. Disney has partnered with Inspire Health Alliance to help cast members determine the appropriate accommodation for each guest, and also ensure that DAS is reserved only for those guests for which it was intended.
At Disneyland only, guests who arrive at the gates without having completed the pre-enrollment process can talk in person with an accessibility services cast member at the resort. Guest Relations in the theme parks will no longer handle DAS issuance; rather, a ticket booth in the esplanade between Disneyland and DCA will be the designated location for these conversations.
This is a serious slap in the face to those of us with physical disabilities that make “waiting in conventional queues for extended periods of time” difficult at best. 😡
— Stephen Kiskamp (@skiskamp) April 9, 2024
Not surprisingly, these changes have caused a huge uproar in various communities, with many MousePlanet readers contacting us to share their stories and concerns. One reader shared she has a condition which requires her to use the bathroom at regular intervals, and has qualified for the DAS on that basis. Now she worries that she will either need to pay for Lightning Lane access to avoid lines longer than 30 minutes, or just miss out on rides entirely. She questions how the return-to-queue process could even work with someone who uses a ECV, asking “So I’m in the middle of a 120-minute standby queue, get a sudden urge, and somehow need to back out of the winding queue on a scooter, find a CM to give me a return pass, and make it to the loo on time?”
Regarding the suggestion that guests use rider switch or single rider lines for faster boarding, one reader asked, “Isn’t that entirely counter to the Disneyland origin story? Didn’t Walt want a place he could enjoy with his children instead of sitting on a park bench watching them? I don’t want to spend most of my day waiting for my family to get off a ride so I can have my turn, I want to ride with my kids.” Other readers balk at the suggestion that visitors with physical limitations rent a wheelchair or ECV for their visit, pointing out the extra cost to rent these devices.
I think that Disney’s name for the current system is partly at fault for the current situation. According to 2021 U.S. Census Bureau data, 13% of Americans have a disability. If the average Disneyland family is four people, the odds are that half of those families have one person in their group with a disability. And it’s not surprising that people would see something called the “Disability Access Service,” and think, “hey, I have a disability, I should look into that.” That’s not abuse per se, it’s just human nature, and it may explain some of why requests for the Disability Access Service have more than tripled over the last five years.
If Disney titled this something like “access for guests with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” it would be much more obvious who it’s intended for, and would then open the discussion for guests with physical disabilities to learn what options exist for them.
That’s not to say that abuse is not a big factor, with social media influences gleefully posting things like, “the one word you need to know to skip the lines at Disney World,” and Facebook groups sharing “tricks” for qualifying for a DAS. Disney has a right and an obligation to put an end to that abuse.
As I’ve shared before, I’ve navigating Disney’s access systems for nearly three decades with my husband and now my children, and I completely understand the concerns of visitors who fear that these changes mean they won’t be able to visit Disneyland at all. I truly encourage anyone who feels that they have a need not addressed by the current options go through the DAS registration process and discuss your specific needs with the cast members. I do feel that Disney wants to handle requests on a case-by-case basis based on specific needs, but I also expect many people to be disapointed if they no longer qualify for a service they’ve previously relied on.
Disneyland Forward faces city council vote
Three years after Disney officials first made their case for a $1.9 billion expansion of the Disneyland Resort, the project known as “Disneyland Foreward” will go before the Anaheim City Council for a vote on Tuesday, April 16. The Anaheim planning commission gave their green light to the proposal during a meeting in March, sending it to the City Council for final approval.
Disney first announced the Disneyland Forward initiative in March 2021, weeks before the resort reopened from the 14-month pandemic closure. The company said it wanted the City of Anaheim to revisit the 1993 Disneyland Resort Specific Plan, which set up land use “districts,” with specific rules governing each.
Disney says it has filled all of the space in the district earmarked as theme park, and has no place to expand without taking out existing park space, as was the case when Big Thunder Ranch was razed to make room for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. Plans to build a new resort hotel were stymied in 2018, in part because the site proposed for the project was deemed to be part of the parking district. The company wants updates that would permit integrated development of new theme park, hotel, shopping and entertainment venues on land Disney already owns. In November, Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro said there’s enough room to build another Disneyland if they wanted.
Since announcing the plan, Disney has held a series of community events to share their vision with Anaheim residents; both Resort President Ken Potrock and D’Amaro have made the rounds with bright, colorful and vague concept art, and the City of Anaheim has held its own informational open houses. In various presentations, D’Amaro has discussed possibly creating new lands based on Frozen, Black Panther and Coco, though no specifics have been released.
Throughout the process, Disney officials have emphasized that they aren’t seeking tax concessions or public funding for any future expansion, and that these approvals would not increase the acreage Disney already owns. However, the company is asking to purchase all or portions of three city roads for $40 million, making Magic Way, Hotel Way and a portion of Clementine Street private property.
If you’d like to watch the proceedings, you can view the meeting on the city’s Anaheim TV website, or on the Anaheim City Council and Planning Commission Meetings YouTube page. The public meeting begins at 5:00 p.m., with the Disneyland Forward discussion likely to begin after 5:30. Plan for a long discussion and lots of public comments. The discussion may also be continued until the May 7th meeting.
Pixar Fest menu preview
Pixar Fest starts next week and Disney has provided a preview of what awaits foodies during this event. As usual, the novelties team has hit it out of the park with an assortment of collectibles which we predict will make for some tough decisions – how many popcorn buckets is too many? The Alien Pizza Planet Truck is absolutely coming home with me, and I’ve seen a lot of excitement for the Coco Guitar popcorn bucket.
Pixar fans can bring home a variety of souvenirs from Pixar Fest. Photo courtesy Disney.
New for this event is a viewing package for new “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration” parade at Disney California Adventure. The package is $69 per person, and includes a reserved seat in the viewing area at Sonoma Terrace. The package comes with a plate of “Pixar-inspired foods, desserts and cheeses,” as well as soft drinks, bottled water, coffee and a “specialty mocktail.” Reservations have not yet opened for the package, so keep checking the Disneyland website or the app for information.

Foodies should schedule a second visit to Pixar Fest next month, with the six new Marketplaces open on May 10. Each is themed to a different Pixar movie, adding even more drinks and dishes to the festival. Disney has not yet said whether they will offer a Sip and Savor pass for this event, but it would seem like a good bet.
Disney gives update on Downtown Disney changes
In last week’s Disneyland Resort Update, we noted that Downtown Disney has begun another round of musical chairs, with shops and restaurants on the move. On Wednesday, the Disney Parks Blog provided an official update on some of these moves, and gave a look ahead at changes planned this summer.
The biggest news is confirmation that the three new eateries headed by Chef Carlos Gaytán – Paseo, Centrico and Tiendita – will open in May. There’s also news about Din Tai Fung, and an explanation for the relocations of the Disney Dress Shop and WonderGround Gallery. You can read the full article here.
Let’s keep it social
It looks like the Walt Disney Company has resumed posting to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, at least for some of its official accounts. For others, including the official @Disneyland and @WaltDisneyWorld accounts, it appears Instagram and Facebook are still the preferred social media platforms. If you’re used to getting your official Disney news from X, you’ll want to check other channels as well.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $225, or up to any three days between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $275.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day. For an additional $70, you can upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $90 for the three days when purchased in advance. Remember that you can also upgrade to Disney Genie+ after you enter the theme park (subject to availability) and pay the then-current daily fee. We recommend going with the latter option for your first experience with Disney Genie+, just to make sure the service provides a value for you. If you love it, you can always add the Genie+ to your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 2 and wait until June 2 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it’s probably best to purchase early so you’re ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Reservations can now be made up to 180 days in advance, which as of press time includes the entire duration of this offer.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 13, 2024.
This offer can only be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office.
2024 Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
