Thanks to our sponsor, and a contest
Today’s show is sponsored by Owner’s
Locker, a new service that gives you a place to leave your vacation-only
stuff until your next trip to visit the Mouse. Thanks to their generosity,
we’re running a contest. Tell us what you would use an Owner’s Locker for,
either via email or voicemail (1-866-939-2278).
The best or most unique entry (in the sole opinion of the owners of Owner’s
Locker) will receive a free locker with unlimited visits for two years. Entries
are due by Sunday, September 23. The winner will be announced on the October
1 show.
This week, we featured a contest entry from listener Theresa, who had a great
idea on how a locker could help store things for her anniversary trip each
year.
Tip of the Week
This week’s tip comes from listener Rachelle Carson.
Rachelle recommended getting a Disney fix away from the parks by seeing one
of the many Disney stage musicals, either on Broadway or one of the touring
companies.
Mark has recently seen Mary
Poppins on Broadway, so he can certainly agree with that tip. While much
of the show is different from the Disney movie, there is much that is the
same or similar. During the show, Mark determined that it takes no more than
two measures of the opening of “Feed The Birds” to bring tears to
his eyes. It’s a show that he highly recommends, as well as many of the other
shows out there. The
Lion King is still on Broadway, and The
Little Mermaid starts previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in November.
Beauty
and the Beast, Aida and others are on
tour around the world.
Featured attraction
This week, we look at Fantasmic at both Disneyland
Park and the Disney-MGM Studios at Walt
Disney World.
While the Disneyland version of Fantasmic may only show on certain nights
of the week during slow seasons, the Walt Disney World version runs pretty
much every night. The only time either version closes for an extended period
of time is when they go down for refurbishment. The Disneyland version could
also go down if the Sailing Ship Columbia is being refurbished, as it plays
a pivotal part in the show and can’t be replaced. There is an alternate ending
that is used when the Mark Twain is unavailable.
Mike and Mark both prefer the Disneyland version. Mike loves both versions,
but the Disneyland version wins by the narrowest of margins. Mark likes the
Walt Disney World version, but loves the Disneyland version.
Mike won’t camp out for the West Coast show more than once per trip, and
would go for the paid dessert seating, even though the Disney Gallery seating
is no longer available. Mark has camped out along the walkway, the Pirates
bridge and the seating area for the River Belle Terrace. On one of his last
trips, he was shown the Magic Manhole Cover, which is the best place to see
it at ground level.
Mark talked about how the Disneyland show is so much better because the ships
are full-sized and everything takes place right in front of you and over you,
which brings you right into the heart of the action. Mike wants to see the
Walt Disney World version have the full-sized ships instead of the smaller
boats that they use, because he loves the amphitheater. Mark thinks that even
if they replaced the “Steamboat Dinky” with a full-sized Mark Twain,
you’d still be looking down at it, and it’s not as all-consuming as Disneyland’s
version.
Mark remarked about how special it is at Disneyland where the everyday landscape
is magically transformed into the setting for Fantasmic, where the Walt Disney
World version is really just a stage.
Of course, Mike had to point out the Lion King parts of the show.
Review system spotlight
This week’s spotlight focuses on the Whispering Canyon Café at the Wilderness
Lodge . The week’s featured review was a 4-planet review by tdelaney_98
of Farmington, MN. MousePlanet readers like Whispering Canyon Café, rating
it 3.9 out of five planets on the strength of 16 reviews.
tdelaney_98 thinks that the food is good, but the show is what makes the
meal. She told about the special fun that happens when you ask for ketchup.
Mark talked about the ketchup, Pepsi, long straws and other fun events. Mike
mentioned that he prefers lunchtime, when it’s still fun but not as crazy.
Mark mentioned the Pony Express ride, but Mike doesn’t want to be knee-deep
in kids so he prefers not to see it.
Mark gave his favorite call-out joke, but Mike said that his favorite was
a cast member joke that he can’t share. Yeah, yeah.
Mark talked about a pledge that they once asked the kids to recite before
giving them their certificates.
Mike recalled getting picked on for eating a lot of corn.
You can also find Whispering Canyon Café in our Park
Guide.
Ask the Kid
In this week’s segment, Mike asked Mark’s 8-year-old son: “What is your favorite
Lion King character?”
Mark’s son answered that he likes Timon and tried to do his version of the
Hawaiian War Chant, then made an attempt at the “Now, Ma?” sequence
from Lion King 1-1/2.
After taking Mike to task for pushing Lion King again, Mark then did the
full version of Timon’s version of Hawaiian War Chant.
Mike asked Mark if he liked Lion King 1-1/2, and Mark said that it was kind
of fun every once in a while, but he really loves anything that has Nathan
Lane and Ernie Sabella.
Magical Moment
This week’s moment came from Mike, since our Magical Moment bin was empty.
Mike’s Magical Moment happened at last year’s MouseFest, where he had his
first Bluetini. We were at the Territory Lounge at the Wilderness Lodge, and
he was trying all of the signature foods and drinks of the Year of a Million
Dreams, so he ordered the Bluetini. As it arrived with the blue glow cube,
all of the cameras in the room came out and he was the focus of attention.
This was the beginning of the Bluetini mania.
So join us at MouseFest and get your own Bluetini!
Changing the feed, our contest and MouseFest
We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on the new format of shorter, more
frequent MouseStation shows. Currently, MouseStation is published three times
a week, with short subjects on Mondays, featured topics on Wednesdays and
listener feedback on Fridays; the MousePlanetWatch news is published on Thursday.
We’re still currently maintaining the series of three feeds, one for MouseStation
only, one for MousePlanetWatch only and one for both shows.
Based on listener feedback, we will be deciding whether to merge the feeds,
and return to a single feed with all shows, folding MousePlanetWatch into
the main MouseStation feed. That would still leave us with four shows per
week, but there would be only one feed. With the current listener numbers
being fairly even between MouseStation and MousePlanetWatch, it seems as if
there’s a great deal of overlap between the shows.
Please weigh in on the idea of returning to a single feed via email
or by calling our toll-free feedback line at 1-866-939-2278. Don’t forget
that we love voicemails because then we can put your voice on the show!
Don’t forget that you’ve only got until a week from today to get your entry
in for our Owner’s Locker contest!
We also wanted to remind you that we have now scheduled our MouseFest meet
for the podcasts. The MouseStation Hustle-tini Meet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
at Classic Concoctions in the Everything Pop food court at Disney’s Pop Century
Resort for Bluetinis to get our nerve up to get up and boogie. We’ll make
sure that we’re in the lobby before 6 p.m. so that we can do The Hustle, then
return to Classic Concoctions or elsewhere to record some more for the podcast.
For more information on the Hustle-tini or any other MousePlanet-sponsored
meet at MouseFest, check out our MouseFest
information page. If you’ve got any ideas on what might make a cool MouseStation
T-shirt for MouseFest, let Mark know!
