Tip of the Week

This week’s tip comes in a voicemail from listener Dave Welty, who let us
know about a great way to keep the motion sensor-controlled air conditioning
system from turning off while you’re asleep in your energy-efficient Disney
hotel room. These are great for saving energy, but during the warm season
the room can heat up even at night while you sleep, and the air doesn’t turn
on to cool the room off because there’s no movement in the room. Those mylar
balloons are really cool in many ways.

Mike warned that the tip won’t work at the Animal Kingdom Lodge because balloons
are not allowed in the rooms there to protect the animals. There’s actually
a balloon valet service there where they take the balloon from you and then
give you an identical balloon when you leave.

Featured attraction

This week, we look at Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon
Spin
in Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland
Park
. Mike had not realized the “Car Toon”/”Cartoon”
pun until we recorded the show, which was kind of hard for Mark to believe.

The attraction has one of Mike’s favorite Disney queues. Mike’s favorite
part of the queue is the cage. Mark prefers Jessica’s dressing room. Mark
thinks that the attraction may be too intense for sensitive kids, especially
those who have a problem with darkness and/or sudden flashes of light.

The attraction uses “Lenny the Cab” rather than Benny, as in the
movie, due to issues with Amblin’ Entertainment.

If you’re riding with a child, have them get in first so that you can sit
next to the door. While Disney has remedied the earlier safety concerns, it’s
still better to be safe than sorry.

Review system spotlight

This week’s spotlight focuses on the 50s Prime Time Cafe at the Disney-MGM
Studios. The week’s featured review was a 4-planet review by AndyComputerGuy
of Charlotte, NC. MousePlanet readers are generally positive on 50s Prime
Time Cafe, rating
it 3.7 out of five planets
on the strength of 33 reviews.

Andy and his family go to the Cafe on each trip, so they know what to expect.
On this particular trip, Andy decided to be “naughty” in order to
get a good show for the first-timers in his group. “Cousin Sarah”
scolded him for his many misbehaviors and his family had a great time.

Mark has run into service problems the last 2-3 times there (even getting
meals comped on his last trip due to waiting over an hour for food), and hasn’t
gone back in almost four years because of that. Mike has also noted a decline
in service level and show quality over time.

You can also find 50s Prime Time Cafe in our Park
Guide
.

Ask the Kid

In this week’s segment, listener Jason asked Mark’s 8-year-old son: “If you
could make a movie out of any Disney attraction (like Pirates of the Caribbean)
which attraction would you pick?”

Mark’s son actually had a pretty interesting idea on what to do with a Space
Mountain movie, complete with the traditional “and suddenly, something
goes horribly wrong.”

Magical Moment

This week’s moment came in a voicemail from listener Chris McClain. Chris
experienced a great deal of magic with his family on his latest trip to Walt
Disney World as they got one final chance to make Disney memories with his
mother-in-law. Chris’ father-in-law upgraded them all from their usual lodgings
at Pop Century to the Beach Club. A Disney Dream Team member helped to make
his son an honorary Lost Boy and his daughter an honorary “it’s a small
world” cruise director.

Mike had a similar final memory-making trip with his grandfather, which he
left on the day after meeting Mark for the first time in Minneapolis. They
made some great memories on the trip, but then his grandfather passed away
four days after returning from Disney.
