Feature: All About Disney’s D23 Expo with Steven Clark
On today’s show, Steven Clark, head of Disney’s D23 program joins Mark and Mike to talk about the D23 Expo, which will take place at September 10-13 the Anaheim Convention Center.
After over a year of planning, the D23 Expo is finally coming! Five weeks from today, Disney’s D23 Expo will open in Anaheim, California, right across the street from the Disneyland Resort. The event runs from September 10-13, with the doors opening at 9 a.m. (D23 members get in at 8:00) and events not ending until midnight.
Steven is really excited because the different branches of the Walt Disney Company are finally starting to announce the specifics of their displays and events at the Expo. On Monday, Disney Parks & Resorts announced some great stuff, including a fabulous Imagineering panel hosted by Disney Legend Marty Sklar, a preview of what’s coming to Disney’s California Adventure and other Disney parks and this year’s Disney Legends ceremony. The next announcements will be coming from the Disney Channel, ABC and the Walt Disney Studios.
The “Fifty and Fabulous” Film Festival will be focusing on Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The Shaggy Dog and Sleeping Beauty, with panels kicking off each evening. Dick Cook of the Walt Disney Studios will be the keynote speaker on Friday, and will have a great show to present and perhaps a few anouncements.
The Disney Cruise Line will be announcing the 2011 itineraries for all three of the ships that will be in service at that time.
Disney Interactive will also be there to show the new Toy Story Mania game, along with others.
Disney Consumer Products will have an entire eight-room house furnished with Disney merchandise. There will be book signings, live creation of artwork, a Fairy Tale Wedding pavilion, a Crayola-hosted Disney Creativity Center for kids. A special collection of 20-25 pins will be released at the Expo, as well.
The Walt Disney Archives will also have a fabulous display, including a restored model of the Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Davy Crockett’s hat, a couple of Annette Funicello’s Mouseketeer costumes, Mary Poppins’ traveling suit, plus artifacts from Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and early Mickey Mouse all the way through the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, High School Musical and Hannah Montana. Another amazing showpiece is the jewel-encrusted book from the opening of Sleeping Beauty.
There will also be some artifacts from Captain EO to honor Michael Jackson. Some of the supporting characters may be part of that display, though Steven wouldn’t reveal what they’ve got on tap.
Disney Weddings will be doing a presentation of Fairy Tale Weddings with Kirstie Kelley talking about the Disney princess-inspired gowns, David Tutera talking about wedding receptions and decor, and other bridal experts talking about other Disney Weddings products.
Disney will have regular updates on the show on the D23 Web site, as well as updates on the D23 Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as press coverage by many international press organizations. There may also be a wrapup in the next issue of the Disney twenty three magazine.
Information about D23 Expo admission tickets and packages that include hotel stays and theme park admission is available on the D23 Expo Web site.
A big thanks to Steve Clark for joining us, and to John Singh for setting up the interview.
MousePlanet will also be at the D23 Expo. Be sure to visit the MousePlanet Lounge to take a load off your feet, check out the MousePad discussion forums, or even print out your airline boarding pass.

Twitter/Facebook poll questions
Here are the responses to some questions that Mark was asking on Twitter and Facebook in the last week. If you’d like to get in on answering these questions in the future, you can follow Mark on Twitter or friend him on Facebook.
Are you going to the D23 Expo? Why or why not?
7 respondents are currently planning on attending the Expo
24 respondents will not be attending, for various reasons
- No. I’ve decided that what I would get out of the D23 membership and Expo is not worth the cost of the membership and trip.
- D23 – Too little too late – Rather than kill the Magic Kingdom Club, they should have morphed it into a web-based entity. The Disney Company really dropped the ball on this one
- Nope, no D23 convention. No D23 membership. First they kill Magic Kingdom Club. Then, they kill Disney Club. For what, Disney VISA and now D23???
- I might go to the D23 Expo as a representative of MousePlanet. But I didn’t join D23 and I’m not going as an attendee.
- I’m not a D23 member, but I got a discount on tickets as a Disney employee, so I will be going for one day.
- No. Prior commitment.
- Not a member but I am not sure this type of event I would want to actually go to if I was. I mean, gotta pick my trips carefully and I would rather go to the parks with my family instead.
- Yep – I’m a member and it seems to be about the only D23 perk I can take advantage of. ๐ Okay, I’m being sarcastic – the event sounds like it’s going to be fun. I’d probably go even I wasn’t a member.
- No. I’m not a member (and the member discount isn’t steep enough that I would join D23 if I was attending). Reallly not that interested and its an inconvenient time.
- no..too far. If they had it in Orlando, i would go.
- No. Spending time at the parks with friends (like Friends of the Magic) more interesting to me.
- I would But I have school. It looks amazing but for some reason they decided to do it in early september, when a lot of ppl can’t go.
- I’ll be at D23. Gotta get value out of my membership and it looks like a lot of fun.
- nope. Time not good, too far…
- We will be visiting DL at that time but purely out of coincedence. Not a D23 member
- Can’t make it this year. Too expensive, and we’re going to WDW in Nov instead.
- I am going to the D23 Expo because it is the first ever! I do not see myself going every year unless they start holding it in FL!
- Yes, because they offered us really cheap ($5) tickets at work. ๐ – can’t afford to go to it and still possibly go to mouse adventure.
- won’t be going to D23 due to money and limited vacation time.
- not planning on going to the D23 Expo–honestly don’t know much about D23–no flaming me please ๐ LOL
- Not going unfortunately. Timing’s bad, sandwiched between 2 other vacations, plus it’s a long haul from the east coast. Wish I was!
- Not going, not a D23 member, holds no interest for me.
- California trip not in the budget with several FL trips already planned this year.
- If it was in Florida, I would definitely go but I just can’t make it all the way out to California at this time.
- Would love to but no. My nine 2009 visits to WDW have sucked up all my traveling funds. ๐
- yes, excited about everything really! ๐
- Yes, because someone has to staff the MousePlanet booth… ;o)
- we planned on going to D23 Expo when we bought our membership, but Kai and pregnancy changed plans
- I live very close, & would love to go, but I know it will be covered very well online and I will be saving hundreds of dollars.
- I’d love to go to D23 Expo but don’t have the money this year to go. Maybe next year.
- I’d love to go but living in Mass. it’s just a bit too far & costly to go
Mark did not go on his birthday (missed it by less than a month), but Mike will be arriving on his birthday for MouseAdventure.
