Feature: Cars Land, E3 Expo, and Listener Suggestions
Mark and Mike discuss Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park, Disney news from the E3 Expo, and some listener-suggested topics.
E3 Expo
Mike talked about what was largely a disappointing Electronic Entertainment Expo. With all of the major console manufacturers preparing to release new consoles in the next year, it seemed that the rest of the industry was largely in a holding pattern. Mike talked a bit about Epic Mickey 2, which will be available on multiple systems. He was unimpressed by what he saw of the game based on Brave. He thought that Disney Princess My Fairytale Adventure looked pretty interesting, but looked very similar to the My Little Pony games. In general, there wasn't much from Disney Interactive Studios.
Mike thought that the biggest Disney news of the Expo was that all ESPN channels and some other Disney Studios properties will be available through the XBox. Mike had a chance to chat with Jorge Garcia at the conference, and discussed Jorge's voice work for Phineas & Ferb among other topics. A new Kingdom Hearts game is coming to the Nintendo 3DS next month.
Cars Land debuts at Disney California Adventure park
MousePlanet was all over the rededication of Disney California Adventure last week, including Storify coverage of the events as they happened on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Mike thought that Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix's blog post about dealing with embargoes was very interesting.
Mark talked about how impressive the new areas are, and mentioned an interestingly prophetic quote from John Lasseter from the 2006 Disney shareholder meeting: “I promise you, not only are we going to make great motion pictures we're going to make theme park rides that as soon as you get off that ride, you want to get back in that line, no matter how long it is, to ride that ride again.”
Mike and Mark were probably both the most impressed by the amazing placemaking that the Imagineers did. Mark also mentioned that the Cars-themed wing of Disney's Art of Animation Resort really doesn't hold a candle to Cars Land, and wondered about the disparate level of theming.
Listener Suggestions
We took some time to discuss topics sent in by Nathan Peagler a few shows back.
Staying off property – Mark hasn't stayed off-property since 1995 (nearly 3 dozen trips ago), and the only way he would consider staying off property is if he had a large group staying together and he had no Disney Vacation points to use.
Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival – Mark loves a whole lot about Flower & Garden, and briefly talked about the Festival.
The Yeti at Expedition Everest is still in “B mode” and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Mark and Mike provided some of the backstory for what happened to cause the current “disco yeti.”
We have a few more topics from Nathan that we'll use in the near future.
Listener Feedback
Joey in Tucson tweeted us an idea to discuss, about a discussion or ranking of the Pixar films. We did cover this on Episode 298, from April 2009, but we might consider revisiting in.

Now that Cars Land is open at Disney's California Adventure, would you rather spend a day at Disneyland or DCA?
