Featured Topic – Walt Disney World History with David Koenig

In this week’s feature, we talked about the history of Walt Disney World
with David Koenig, MousePlanet
columnist
and author of Mouse
Tales
, More
Mouse Tales
, Mouse
Under Glass
and the new Realityland:
True-Life Adventures at Walt Disney World
.

After David gave an overview of his books, Mark asked him about the tours
that he’s given during the last two MouseFests and asked if there will be
another one in 2008. David isn’t sure yet. If he does plan a tour, we’ll let
you know on the podcast.

The discussion started with how Walt really didn’t focus on the theme park
when he was planning Disney World (his brother Roy added “Walt”
to the name after Walt died). The original intent of the Magic Kingdom was
to get something up and running on the property and start making money while
he continued to plan EPCOT, which was his real dream for the Florida property.

The discussion ranged into how Walt decided to plan his own city and how
he went about figuring out what to do. David discussed “model city”
planner James Rouse, who declared that Disneyland was the greatest example
of city planning in the world.

The discussion turned to how closely EPCOT would have been to Walt’s original
plans even if he had lived. While Walt had great ideas, how much of his vision
would have survived contact with reality once they actually tried to built
the thing?

We went on to talk about what did happen after Walt died.

Finally, we talked a little bit about what David went through in writing
his latest book. We chatted about the interview that got away, and the toughest
interview that he was able to line up.

You can buy any of David’s books at Amazon.com: Mouse
Tales
, More
Mouse Tales
, Mouse
Under Glass
and the new Realityland:
True-Life Adventures at Walt Disney World
