Disney Stuff – Mickey and Friends Blown Glass Ornaments

December 26, 2014 by Chris Barry

Welcome back to Disney Stuff.

I hope everyone has been enjoying his or her holiday season. Each year around this time I try to take a look at some of my Disney Christmas stuff. In past years I’ve looked at a great old Mickey Christmas book, browsed through my collection of Disney Christmas Movies, and showed off my Disney Village Christmas Collection. I’ve talked about some of the many different Disney Christmas Ornaments that I’ve collected over the years as well. This year, I thought I’d take a look at a particularly wonderful set of blown glass ornaments that I found at the Disney Store a while back.

As I recall there were several different sets of these glass blown ornaments available back then. I remember a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set, a Winnie the Pooh and friends set and a Nightmare Before Christmas set. These were a more unique offering than the ornaments that have been found at the Disney Store in recent years, and I’m so glad I got them when I did, because I haven’t seen them since.

Disney has always excelled at creating ornaments and figures that are near identical representations of their animated characters. The blown glass style does distort the character likeness a little, but too me that’s what makes these sets special. They’re a little off and I completely don’t mind. It sets them apart and gives them a different look. They’re each about four inches high and came in a long red rectangular box. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Minnie has a winter coat on and is holding a present:

Donald, silly as always, has a wreath around his neck:

As usual, Donald has gotten himself into some trouble and is probably stuck in this wreath. Photo by Chris Barry.

Goofy is holding a small Christmas tree:

Pluto’s got a candy cane in his mouth and a long green scarf:

No one in my family can say for sure what exactly they think Daisy is supposed to be doing. Perhaps she’s holding up a present to her ear and shaking it to figure out what’s inside? Or maybe she’s…actually that’s the only thing I can think of. It’s a bit of a mystery. I’ve even looked at it up close with a magnifying glass and I still can’t tell. If anyone out there has gotten a closer look at Daisy and cares to wager a guess, I’d love to hear from you.

We’re still not sure what Daisy is actually doing. Photo by Chris Barry.

The whole set sold for somewhere between $20 and $30. Right now there are only two sets for sale on eBay. One is asking $20 and one is asking $79. That makes it a little tough to assess a proper value. My guess is $79 is a little bit too high. This particular set is in perfect shape and has the original packaging, which helps keep it safe when it gets packed away in the attic. I’ve always really liked this set of glass ornaments. It’s a classic set of Disney characters created in a slightly different medium than you’re used to seeing and they look great on the tree.

We set up two Christmas trees in our house. One is in the living room and is the main tree with all of our classic and finer ornaments. The other tree is in our family room and that’s the tree with all of the kid’s ornaments on it. I’m happy to say that this set has earned a place on the main tree. These are after all, a nice set of glass ornaments and they deserve a spot on the big tree.

We’ve been enjoying them for many years now and I hope to pass them on to the kids one day. Then they can find their own special place to hang them on their Christmas trees.

Thanks for checking out this special piece of Disney Christmas Stuff this year. I hope all of you out there have a joyous and peaceful holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

Click on the link below to let me hear your thoughts on these glass ornaments and I’ll see you next year with more of that great Disney Stuff.
