Matterhorn climbers return to Disneyland.
MousePlanet reader Jeremiah noticed that Disneyland is currently accepting
applications for part-time mountain climbers. The job description says,
“Disneyland Mountain Climber will perform repetitive climbing and
rappelling up and down the face of the Matterhorn Mountain and perform
a rehearsed and directed show.”
If you’ve always wanted to climb the Matterhorn, visit the Walt Disney
Company Web site to see if you have the required skills for the job (link).
Haunted Mansion transformation
Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion attraction reopened last week with a few
noticeable changes. Reader Zandra wrote to describe them to us:
In the hallway after you exit the expanding room and before you board
the doom buggies, the changing paintings are different. First, the May-December
one has been removed and replaced by one of a man. Second, they don’t
slowly change anymore. Now, they are tied into the lightening effects
and show the “scary” versions of the paintings at the same
time as the lightening flashes. Madame Leota’s crystal ball is now floating
high above the table. She also looks lit a little differently. Once
in the graveyard, the singing busts are definitely lit differently,
showing wonderful shadows and contours of their faces.
Keep your eyes peeled; MousePlanet will have photos of these changes
in an upcoming update.

A handful of Mickeys

As you view this week’s batch of Mickeys, we wanted to share notes from
two readers. Elizabeth passes along this tip she received from a cast
member: “At least half of all the 75 Mickey’s have a silver Mickey
head located somewhere on the Mickeys. Some are very easy to find, while
others are not so easy to find.”
Statue #6, “Believe in Your Dreams,” designed by Kevin Garnett.

Carolyn warns, “The 75 Mickeys do not have special lighting on them
and in fact are in some very poorly lit areas. If you’re planning a special
trip to see the Mickeys, make sure to get there early enough in the day
to be able to view them in decent light.”

College. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Carolyn also asked why there was so little merchandise available for
the promotion. “With Disney being the King of Merchandise Marketing
you would think they would have had postcards and maybe even a small book
with all the Mickey’s in it. The only things they had were 8 collectible
pins and nothing else available.”

MousePlanet’s merchandise columnist, Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix, asked
the same question. According to a merchandise manager, Disney did not
secure the merchandising rights to some of the statues, including the
very popular Elton John figure. Because of this, there was no way to offer
merchandise featuring the complete collection of statues.

Ears to the ground
…A MousePlanet reader passed along some news about Disney’s California
Adventure park’s upcoming “Block Party Bash,” the character
parade being introduced for the 50th Anniversary celebration:
- The parade features 23 Pixar characters, with each float themed after
a Pixar movie - The parade includes tons of performers in the parade, including dancers,
tumblers (who perform on a trampoline), and performers on jumping stilts.
- The choreography incorporates hip hop styles and even jump rope moves.
- The songs are contemporary pop songs with a good dance beat, and include
“Dancin’ in the Street,” “Macarena,” “Hey Ya!”
and “Who Let The Dogs Out.” - The Green Army Men “run” the party, and escort the floats.
During a pre-show. one Green Army Man comes out and lays down the ground
rules for the parade in drill master style. - The parade is very interactive. Instead of sitting along the performance
corridor, the audience are encouraged to get up and have fun with the
characters. The dancers pull people out of the crowd to dance with them.
- There will be two 10-minute show stops along the parade route.
- The floats do not move out at a slow pace like traditional parade
floats.

Alaska Airlines “Kids Fly Free” promotion returns
Alaska Airlines is repeating the popular “Kids Fly Free” promotion
for travel to the Disneyland Resort, and is offering park ticket and hotel
discounts as well.
If you book an Alaska Airlines Southern California Vacations package
for travel between January 4 and June 29, 2005, one child (age 2-11) can
fly free with each paid adult ticket. The package also includes four nights
at the Holiday Inn Buena Park and airport transfers via Karmel Shuttle
(children 2-11 are free). The packages, including airfare and hotel, start
at $429 per person.
Even better, if you travel between January 4 and April 28, you also receive
a free child’s 5-day Disneyland Resort park hopper for each paid adult.
If you are traveling without children, you can instead purchase the adult
5-day park hopper ticket at the children’s price. Be aware, however, that
Disneyland considers 11-year-olds to be adults for the purpose of admission
pricing.
If Buena Park is too far away from Disneyland for you, you can upgrade
to a Disneyland Resort hotel and receive up to $200 Disney Dollars with
a stay of four nights or more before April 24, 2005.
Finally, if you book the package through alaskaair.com, you get 1500
Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Bonus Miles per passenger. For more information,
visit the Alaska Airlines Web site (link).
You must book packages by March 21, 2005.
