A chance to actually sway plans
Bits of information continue to trickle in on the fate of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln at the Main Street Opera House. As we’ve covered in recent weeks, despite promises when the show closed to install the 50th Anniversary film The First 50 Magical Years last year, the celebration is now coming to an end with no plans for putting Lincoln back in the theater. (Actually, Lincoln is still in the theater, they just put the movie screen in front of him but it isn’t as easy as just taking the screen out.)
The minor update we have this week is that Lincoln’s future actually seems to be on a bit of a tightrope and this may actually create an opportunity for your opinion to have an impact. Apparently a budget has been created for returning Mr. Lincoln to the theater for summer 2007. However, no commitment to actually spend that money and do the project has been made. The existence of the budget is no guarantee of it happening, but without a budget it certainly couldn’t. So, when the 50th Anniversary comes to an end at the end of the month and Steve Martin is still showing at the Opera House, if you feel strongly about Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln returning, be sure to stop in at City Hall and say so.
This may be one of the few situations where plans are uncertain enough that sufficient guest comment could sway the ultimate outcome. Or it could just be that this budgeted money is an easy target for when some member of management is told to squeeze a few tens of thousands of dollars out of the expense column.
Candlelight Processional
Not much information here but around this time it is a question that comes up constantly. Club 33 members have been informed that this year’s Candlelight Processional will be, as expected by many, on December 2 and 3. There will be a total of four performances with two on each night. The presenters have not been announced and likely won’t be announced until pretty close to the actual events (frequently, Disneyland isn’t even sure until surprisingly close).
Otherwise, at this point in time, we’ve heard nothing to assume that this year’s events will be any kind of departure from last year. With Fantasyland Theater being given over to Princess playacting and merchandise it would seem that Main Street performances are the only option.
Tomorrowland Landing
We received confirmation on the name of the new Tomorrowland store currently being built in the old Radio Disney booth: Tomorrow Landing. In addition to the inventory of hats and embroidery that the store will inherit from Hatmosphere, the location will take advantage of its proximity to the new Jedi Training Academy stage show coming soon to the Tomorrowland Terrace Stage. When it opens, the embroidery will be done by machine.
Work continues on the new Tomorrowland store that we now know will be called Tomorrow Landing. Photo by David Michael.
So by the end of the year the Hatmosphere name will have disappeared from Disneyland altogether. Its current location will be replaced by the Autopia Winner’s Circle store, which is itself being displaced by the new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage attraction.
Once the new Tomorrow Landing store opens it will soon get some company in the form of another face-painting kiosk, similar to the one in Fantasyland. The focus of this one, however, is to be on Star Wars-themed designs, so expect to see a lot of Darth Maul’s running around. The area around the store is also expected to get a new fruit cart sometime during the first quarter of the 2007 fiscal year (which is actually October to December 2006).

Paradise Pier shuttering
In a move appropriate for its theming, now that the summer is over, at least one section of Paradise Pier is going to begin shuttering stores, restaurants, and attractions for the season.
As of October, the budgets for fiscal year 2007 projects begin and in Disney’s California Adventure park, the biggest of these will be the work to install a new attraction in Paradise Pier. The Pixar-themed Midway Madness ride will require taking out most of the shops and midway games found under the track from California Screamin’. Maliburritos is a food location that has long been unofficially closed. Strips, Dips, and Chips can now be added to that list. Paradise Pier Photo will soon close and all of the midway games will likely be shut down by the end of the fiscal year (September 30). The fate of the far end of this complex (near Maliboomer), which houses one big store complex with several names, has an uncertain fate, as nothing specific has been announced internally.
The official Disneyland calendar still shows California Screamin’ closing down for only four days in October. People familiar with plans for the Midway Madness work have expressed surprise that California Screamin’ would remain open through it, but it is possible that the ride will remain open except for the short closure to allow for some maintenance and movement of heavy equipment. It is annoying that we don’t have any greater certainty on this but if the ride does have an as-yet-not-announced lengthy closure in the next few months it will definitely be up and running again in time for the Rockin’ California Screamin’ promotion coming in January (more on that in the next item).
Rockin’ all over the place
What a weird path Rock It Mountain has taken. During the recent multi-year rebuild of Space Mountain, there were lots of rumors about a “nighttime” version of Space Mountain. Then when the new attraction sign went up everybody was excited to see evidence for the new name hidden away and only visible under exactly the right lighting.
And then it kept getting delayed, and word began to leak out the the powers-that-be weren’t too pleased with the product and that the rush to finish Space Mountain in time for the 50th birthday of Disneyland had prevented the Imagineers from doing exactly what they wanted. It was finally seen by the limited segment of the public last May and June during the many Grad Nights for the class of 2006. The response generally matched the rumors, and new rumors began circulating that “Rock It Mountain” would simply be quietly shelved, with maybe a short run in 2007 to justify the expense, and then fade into memory and maybe appear in a decade as a question in the Disney version of Trivial Pursuit.
At the big New York announcement of the 2007 promotion “Year of a Million Dreams” the press releases included mention that “Rockin’ Space Mountain” would be coming to Disneyland for 2007. So the name had changed and it appeared the method had changed. Rather than just being a nighttime attraction, the problem of how to gracefully switch from one version to the other would be solved by just switching full time.
Cast members were definitely caught by surprise, however, by last week’s announcement that “Rockin'” would be even bigger than that announcement implied. Not only will Space Mountain switch full-time to Rockin’ Space Mountain beginning this January and run through April 2007 but DCA’s California Screamin’ will get a Rockin’ makeover as well. Beyond a new soundtrack on the DCA attraction it is unclear that there is anything else that could be done to remake the attraction but from January through April they’ll be “rockin’ both parks.” (Sorry for that, but that was the official wording in the announcement.)
The return of the free fourth night
Now that the 50th celebration is over, reservations for both the Disneyland and resort area hotels are apparently dropping, prompting the return of a promotion from before the 50th Anniversary, where a free fourth night will be added to any travel you reserve now for between October 1 and December 17th. You must book the trip through Walt Disney Travel Company and stay three consecutive nights at one of the three Disney-owned hotels or a Good Neighbor hotel in the Disneyland area (link).
Hidden Mickey
Some Disneyland fans may remember Mickey Moo. Mickey Moo was a cow added to Big Thunder Ranch back in 1988 and lived there until her death in 1993. The famous thing about Mickey Moo was a black spot on her side that resembled a big Mickey head. Walt Disney World for a while had a similar attraction in Minnie Moo, who was displayed first at Toontown Country Fair and then Fort Wilderness Campground before she died.
Last Thursday, Disneyland was visited by a similar genetic coincidence; this time in canine form. A nine-month-old beagle from Ontario, California, and named Nutmeg, was granted admission to the park (along with her family) because of a near perfect Mickey spot on her head. She was allowed to tour the park, and was even grand marshal for Disney’s Parade of Dreams.

This offers one possible answer to a question that appears in the MousePlanet e-mail inbox every once in a while: “How do I get into Disneyland for free?”
This and that…
…It now appears that the Matterhorn will be closed through the Thanksgiving period and reopen in time for the Christmas rush. The closure was originally scheduled to begin last week but then got bumped to keep the attraction open through Labor Day Weekend. Without more detail on what exactly will be done, it is hard to know if there is any chance of an early reopening. So far the only thing we’ve heard is that a new restraint system will be installed in the bobsleds but have no details of substantive alterations to the track or mountain.
…A bit of a faux pas at the Team Disney Anaheim building last week when some commercials for the upcoming Year of a Million Dreams promotion were previewed. Word is that they are pretty cute and find that Disney tradition of pulling at the heartstrings. One little flaw, though, was that the music being used in the commercials was from Peter Pan. No, not Disney’s 1953 animated version of the J.M. Barrie story but rather the 2003 live-action version from Universal Studios. It is quite possible that the previews just used temporary music, but if not, Disney fans with an alert ear may be in for a bit of a surprise when those commercials start to show.
…The Golden Dreams theater will close for five days from September 24 to 28 to install an overlay apparently being called “Golden Screams.” We’re unsure at this point what this will involve, though the greeting of Disney characters in Halloween costumes nearby seems to be part of it and the theater will show Halloween-themed movie clips from old shorts and Disney movies. A symmetrical closure after Halloween, to remove the overlay, has not yet shown up on the schedule.
…A new piece of street entertainment will be coming to DCA next month (probably beginning October 2) called “High School Musical Pep Rally.” The details on what exactly this will be aren’t clear. Though some rumors suggest it will replace Block Party Bash as DCA’s Main Parade, this almost certainly isn’t correct. Whatever it is, it will involve some kind of caravan moving along the parade route playing the popular songs from the Disney Channel’s smash hit kid’s movie High School Musical. Apparently the audience will be able to sing and dance along. Perhaps it will be a Rocky Horror Picture Show for tweeners. Since many of the dancers used for this show also perform in the Block Party Bash parade, it helps explain why, beginning September 8, a slimmed-down version of the parade will begin performing.
…Disney’s Vault 28, the new high-end Disney clothing store for DCA will open in the first week of October, most likely on October 3. This opening was described as a “soft opening,” the meaning of which is unclear since it isn’t like they’ll open and find that a lift chain is breaking a lot or the front door is difficult to open and the store needs to close for another week for tweaking. Most likely it means that October 3 is a soft target in case final construction is completed.
…Just a quick clarification on what is happening with the stores in New Orleans Square. Pieces of Eight stays where it is. Treasures, which replaced the Christmas store, is gone and is the new home of Le Bat en Rouge (the name will eventually catch up to the location). The former location of Le Bat en Rouge will form a larger pirate-store complex with Pieces of Eight but will officially be a separate store by the name of Port Royal.
…Fans of Bengal BBQ can breathe another sigh of relief. Earlier this year we reported on the rumors of a River Belle Terrace remodel and expansion that would spell doom for the popular meat-on-a-stick Adventureland food location. Then other projects got in the way and it was pushed into 2007. Word now is that it has probably been pushed even farther out into the future and will not happen anytime sooner than early 2008. Of course, at Disneyland, plans even a few months down the road have to be considered tenuous, so it is hard to say what will eventually happen with any certainty, but it seems safe to say that everybody gets at least a few more opportunities for a Banyan Beef Skewer or some bacon-wrapped asparagus.
…The closure of Yamabuki, the Japanese restaurant at Paradise Pier, will now extend to the end of September while work on the remodel concludes. We’ve also heard word that the menu is being rethought in some significant ways, but details are not yet available.
…The “Aurora’s Breakfast at Dawn” merchandise event for the release of a Precious Moments sculpture (October 7) is completely sold out. The piece will be available in the park later that day as available.
