Going to Mickey’s Halloween Treat?

If you’re going to one of the Mickey’s Halloween Treat events at Disney’s California Adventure this month and have an interest in meeting fellow MousePlanet readers, you might want to check out this “meet” thread on our message board.

MouseAdventure Registration

Every six months or so, the day before our MouseAdventure event at Disneyland I receive several frantic emails from people saying they meant to register and just forgot and can they please just show up and play.

Because of the planning needed the answer is always no?and so this time around let’s all avoid that horrible situation. We have two versions of the game this time around (November 5) and whether you just want a fun day at the park or an all out cutthroat competition, one of them will be for you. HalloweenTime

Do you miss it yet? The 50th Anniversary is officially completely in Yesterland and the park is fully embroiled in HalloweenTime. For the first time in years the Disneyland Resort is making an extensive attempt to profit from the Halloween holiday.

The centerpiece of any Halloween observation at Disneyland is of course Haunted Mansion Holiday, in which the classic Haunted Mansion attraction is repurposed with scenes from the film Nightmare Before Christmas. This year’s version doesn’t really have many noteworthy changes from last year. Blacklight has been added to the portraits in the elevator and just some generic Nightmare Before Christmas stuff has been put in the attic scene with no sign of the bride or a replacement.

Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland has also received a holiday-related overlay and is now Woody’s Halloween Roundup. The area has been decorated extensively with pumpkins and Halloween ornaments. Woody and Jessie are regularly on hand as well as some expert pumpkin carvers. Kids can do crafts and other activities. Pumpkin Pete’s Chuckwagon is a temporary ODV location selling drinks and snacks should find yourself peckish while waiting for kids. While the cows and horses are being kept out of sight during the makeoever, the goats are still out in their pens for petting.

Otherwise, the only other real signs of Halloween at Disneyland are the limited to Main Street. The floral Mickey below the Main Street Disneyland Railroad station has been rebuilt to get rid of the 50th Anniversary theme and is now a Mickey wearing a mask, constructed mostly out of appropriately colored gourds. In the middle of Town Square, in the spot that will be filled by the Christmas tree later this year is a very large Mickey jack-o-lantern. The extensive decoration continues all the way down Main Street. Rumor is that next years edition will see the decorations extend from Main Street all the way through Frontierland. But in terms of totally taking over the park, Disneyland has a long way to go to match ebullience Disneyland Paris has for the holiday.

For those prizes requiring on-site attendance, such as stays in the Castle Suite, Fastpass tickets and after-hours events, prizes of comparable value will be awarded. If you’re in the parks, you may be tapped on the shoulder by a member of the Dream Squad. Those cast members will reportedly be wearing short-sleeved blue shirts, khaki pants and white vests, with a black bag slung across their shoulder. Assignments for those cast members will be very specific, such as “the third person through the exit gate of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at 3:04 p.m., and if more than one come through together, take the one on the left.”

Jedi Training Academy

With the reopening of the Tomorrowland Terrace Stage, Tomorrowland’s newest entertainment offering has also begun. Jedi Training Academy is an interactive stage show being performed six times a day. In the show, a Jedi instructor randomly selects young children (like 4-7 years old) from the audience to receive Jedi training. At the end of the show, the class is interrupted by Darth Vader and Death Maul and the young cadets get the opportunity to try out what they’ve learned.

At least for now the shows are performed at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m, 2:30 p.m, 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. seven days a week. Indulging in gender stereotypes for a moment, the “female” version of the show, Disney Princess Fantasy Faire in the Fantasyland Theater, will begin this Friday.

Strips, Dips ‘n’ Chips

There was some concern last week when we reported that Strips, Chips ‘n’ Dips would be closing in the Paradise Pier area of Disney’s California Adventure. A lot of people apparently really liked those chicken strips. Or maybe they were just awed by the subtle genius of the little Cooktown dip cups.

We mentioned that the menu would eventually move to the Bountiful Valley Farm area but weren’t confident on when that would actually happen. Turns out it happened much faster than we thought and as of last week Farmer’s Market in Bountiful Valley Farm is regularly open for the first time since the park opened.

It appears that the only real change to the menu in the move is the addition of Munch, Inc., child dining options (chicken tenders or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for $5.99) and a Caesar salad for $7.29 ($8.49 with chicken). For the most part the confusion of the move wasn’t even used as an opporutnity to surreptitiously raise prices. A side of french fries now costs $0.30 more (to $3.59) but everything else remains the same.

So while Strips, Dips, ‘n’ Chips is now part of history, you can still eat the food.

Monorail Blue escapes to Canada

MousePlanet reader RobMustang lives in Surrey, British Columbia. So it is safe to say he was surprised to out in search of some lunch when he stumbled on Monorail Blue.

A Canadian fabrication company won the bid to dismantle the current monorails, separate the superstructure from the underlying frame. The undercarriages, which date from 1967, will then be returned and eventually reattached to new superstructures currently being built in Juarez, Mexico (thanks to another MousePlanet reader, chrisaustx, for this information).

This reminds us of the time we found Walt Disney World Mark IV monorails baking in the Nevada desert outside of Las Vegas (link). Just goes to show that no matter where you live it can pay to keep your eyes open. You never know when you’ll bump into some Disney.

This and that…

…With this time of year comes the return of pumpkin fudge to the Disneyland Resort. This seasonal offering is a favorite with many guests and can be found each day, while supplies last, at Pooh’s Corner, Candy Kitchen, Greetings from California (Disney’s California Adventure), and Marceline’s in Downtown Disney.

…It’s not on the official calendar yet but several sources have informed us that beginning today Autopia will be closed due to work with heavy equipment in and around the submarine lagoon. This information percolated up very quickly towards the end of last week so if you’re at the park today let us know for sure.

…We’ve received several inquiries about Sleeping Beauty Castle going under tarps for repainting and removal of the 50th Anniversary decorations. While removal of the crowns from the castle turrets was delayed until after the weekend, removal and any painting will be done with minimal scaffolding and without tarping the castle.

…The High School Musical Pep Rally will have its first performances in Disney’s California Adventure this Friday. The interacitve mini-parade is based on the extremely popular (in the tweener set anyway) Disney Channel movie. We’re not sure of the exact schedule yet but expect to see three sets a day with each set doing a performance at the two Block Party Bash party zones.

…Yamabuki’s closure has been extended again, but only a few days to October 5.

…California Screamin’s four-day closure has been moved from October 2-5 to October 9-12. The first phases of work for building the new Midway Mania dark ride scheduled for 2008 are still expected to begin this week.

…The Disneyland Hotel got new signage last week to replace the building top signs that were removed earlier this year to comply with Anaheim Resort District signage regulations.

…Outdoor Vending seems to have seen some price increases last week. To be honest we don’t pay close attention to what a turkey leg costs but churros are up a quarter to $3.00 and the Mickey ice cream bars are up the same amount to $4.

…Though as of the weekend it wasn’t yet open, the construction walls are down and everything looks ready to go at the new TomorrowLanding storein, where else, Tomorrowland. As the stores sub-title (or whatever you’d call that) implies, in addition to Jedi stuff and probably some of the hat inventory from Hatmostphere, the store will also eventually be the spot for Submarine Voyage merchandise.

…Though it is essentially just an extension of the Pieces of Eight store, Port Orleans is open for business again with all the appropriate signage. Despite what it says, though, there really aren’t any curios or curiosities for sale.

Current Refurbishments and Attraction Closures

Disneyland

• Disneyland Monorail closed August 21 – December 14 for station remodel and queue construction for Submarine Voyage. Will likely close again in January.
• Snow White – An Enchanted Musical ended September 4. Show will not return.


• Matterhorn Bobsleds closed September 5 – December 14 for complete refurbishment.


• Golden Horseshoe closed September 5 – September 28 for refurbishment, kitchen update, and menu change. Though the refurbishment was scheduled to end September 28, as of the October 1 it had not yet reopened.


• Billy Hill and the Hillbillies dark September 5 – September 28 while Golden Horseshoe is closed for refurbishment. See the previous entry, but the regular Billy Hill and the Hillbillies show will resume when Golden Horseshoe reopens.


• Fantasyland Theater closed September 5 – October 5 for removal of Snow White – An Enchanted Musical stage and remodel to accommodate princess interactive experience. The refurbishment took a week longer than scheduled and will now reopen with Disney Princess Fantasy Faire on October 6.
• it’s a small world closed October 23 – November 9 for installation of Christmas overlay.
• Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is currently under construction and will open sometime around summer 2007.

Disney’s California Adventure

• Francis’ Lady Bug Boogie closed until at least January 2007. One-month refurbishment in June/July 2006 was unexpectedly extended indicating major repair work is needed.
• Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular dark September 11 – October 5. Rehearsal of new cast and general rehab of stage and sets. The first new performances are happening a week later than the originally announced schedule.
• Golden Dreams replaced September 24 – October 31? For the Halloween season the film show is being overlayed as Golden Screams. Exact return date is not yet known.
• California Screamin’ closed October 9 – 12.

Downtown Disney

• Disney’s Vault 28 under construction and expected to open October 3.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For convenience sake, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer which works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are still rarely see deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Unless otherwise states, all tickets currently available for purchase must be first used by January 2, 2007. All multi-day tickets expire 13 days after first use.

All Tickets	Disney Visa Application Credit $40 – &150; Currently, if you are not a Disney Visa credit card holder, you can receive an extra $40 discount when purchasing Disneyland tickets through the Disneyland Web site. When making your purchase an opportunity to apply for the credit card (and charge the purchase to the card) will be offered. If approved, the credit card will get a $40 credit when used for its first transaction.
Annual Passes	DVC Discount &150; Members of the Disney Vacation Club can get a $20 discount on a Deluxe or Premium Disneyland Annual pass. Good for first purchase only. Early Renewal Discount &150; If you renew your annual pass (either online or in person) before it expires, you will receive a 10% discount.

Travel Packages

4th Night Free (link). For packages booked between now and December 14, 2006, for travel that begins by December 17, 2006 if you book three consecutive nights at a Disneyland on-property hotel or one of the Good Neighbor resort-area hotels you will get a fourth night free. Packages start at $307 per person for stays at the Red Roof Inn Anaheim Maingate. Packages include one 5-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket per person, one day of early entry, three Virtual Magic Kingdom computer game virtual rewards, one entry into Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, preferred show seating at DCA, and Walt Disney Travel Company collectible pin and lanyard, luggage tag, and California fun book.

2006 Resort Magic Package ? This official Disney travel package (link) is $452/per person for two adults per two-nights. The $452 price is for the Paradise Pier Hotel and goes up for Disneyland Hotel or Grand Californian Hotel. In addition to the hotel room, the package includes appropriate park hopper tickets, one early admission (early admission days are currently Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays), a virtual prize for the Virtual Magic Kingdom online game, admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), and Walt Disney Travel Company collectible pin and lanyard, luggage tag, and California Fun Book. 2006 Good Neighbor Magic Package ? This official Disney travel package (link) starts at $277/per person for two adults per two-nights. The $227 price is for the Jolly Roger Hotel and goes up for other Good Neighbor hotels. In addition to the hotel room, the package includes appropriate park hopper tickets, one early admission (early admission days are currently Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays), a virtual prize for the Virtual Magic Kingdom online game, admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), and Walt Disney Travel Company collectible pin and lanyard, luggage tag, and California Fun Book. Costco Travel Packages ? Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Other Discounts

Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental

? If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club ? Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club ? Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within 2-weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)

AAA Restaurant Discounts ? AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
