Large crowds wait to enter Disney’s California Adventure.
Correction: When we originally published
this park update earlier this week, we incorrectly stated
the expiration of the Southern California Resident Salute
promotion as Friday, May 16. The correct date is Wednesday,
May 14, 2003. For your convenience, we have highlighted the
corrected date in our text.
Disney’s Crowded Adventure – The spring Southern California
resident discount ticket program offered local residents two one-day
admissions for the price of a single day admission. These tickets
were good for only one admission to Disneyland, and one to Disney’s
California Adventure (DCA) park and did not have to be used on
consecutive days.
Many people purchased the tickets and used just the
Disneyland day. Now there are over 200,000 people who have not
redeemed their admission for DCA — and only 10 days left
to redeem them.
As a result, DCA is expecting a major jump in traffic
through Wednesday, May 14, when these tickets expire. This
past Sunday morning, the lines just to get into DCA extended past
the “California” letters in the entrance area, well
into the center of the esplanade between DCA and Disneyland.
The Lucky Fortune Cookery still sports a sign left over from Christmas.

Once inside the park, visitors faced even more lines.
The line for the main entrance restrooms snaked out the door and
around the mosaic wall, while Soarin’ Over California had a 75-minute
wait by noon.
DCA executives may have counted on big crowds, but
their expectations have not slowed a wave of cutbacks. Even during
the recent crowded weekend, shops and restaurants around the park
— such as Rita’s Blenders and P.T. Flea’s — remained
shuttered until noon each day, or like Lucky Fortune Cookery,
did not open at all. If you plan to redeem your DCA ticket before
Wednesday, May 14, try to schedule your visit for a weekday
to avoid the crowds and lines.
Tropical Imports gets the budget axe, again.

Cutbacks at Disneyland, too – DCA isn’t
the only place feeling the budgetary pinch. Disneyland’s shops
have been hit with a series of cutbacks that have left some cast
members and managers scratching their heads.
While DCA’s two carts were removed altogether, all
but two of Disneyland’s pin carts were pulled from the park last
week. The Frontierland cart was left in place — a manager
explained that there really isn’t another good pin location on
the west side of the park. The Main Street cart was also spared,
but will remain closed Mondays through Thursdays for now.
The Disney Gallery lost another two hours each day.
The Disney Gallery continues to open at noon daily,
but now closes two hours before the park closes each weeknight.
The Gallery will close with the park on nights when Fantasmic
performs. In Adventureland, Tropical Imports and the Indiana Jones
Adventure Outpost are back to their noon-to-close schedule.
The most noticeable change is the loss of the “shopping
convenience hour.” The stores are now “soft closing”
with the park — shoppers are not kicked out of the stores,
but cast members are stationed at each shop entrance to encourage
guests to visit the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney,
thereby gently discouraging them from entering the park stores.
“This makes no sense to us,” bemoaned one
Main Street cast member. “The stores make money, especially
in that last hour. Now they want to send the customers to [World
of Disney], and they will cut our hours again when we don’t make
our sales targets. We can’t make money for the company when
we are closed.”

Current Discounts & Promotions
SoCal Salute – The Southern California resident discount
ticket program runs through Wednesday, May 14. Instead
of a discounted ticket, residents get two one-day admissions for
their $47 ($37 for children) – one for Disneyland, and one
for Disney’s California Adventure.
This ticket is good for only one admission to each park (meaning
you cannot go to Disneyland twice on separate days). The two admissions
do not have to be used on consecutive days, but the first admission
must be on the same day as the ticket purchase, and the second
must be used by Wednesday, May 14. And while the ticket
is not intended to be a park hopper, which would allow you to
visit both Disneyland and DCA on the same day, some readers have
reported that they were allowed to use the ticket as a one-day
park hopper.
These tickets are nontransferable. You must provide proof of residency
at the time of purchase, and you will be asked to print your full
name on the tickets. When you return for your second admission,
you need to show ID matching the ticket. This offer is limited
to 5 tickets per qualifying person.
MousePlanet reader Hastin told us about a deal
he found in the L.A. Times, which gives you an additional
savings for accommodations at a Disneyland Resort hotel along
with your SoCal Salute offer:
Stay and play for $89* per person:
Magically turn the Resident Salute Ticket offer into a Disneyland
Resort getaway. This means you’ll get a ticket to each
park and a night’s stay in the middle of the magic at
a Disneyland Resort hotel starting at this special price.
Call 714-956-MICKEY and ask for the “SAL” package
*Valid through May 14, 2003 for southern California residents
of zip codes 900000 – 93599. Subject to availability.
$89 price is per person/double occupancy/weekday at Disney’s
Paradise Pier Hotel; weekend rates will vary. Extra person
rates (maximum 5 people per room) and other Disneyland Resort
hotel rates will vary. Resident Salute tickets valid for only
one day admission to each theme park. Tickets must be used
by May 14, 2003.
MouseSavers.com
reports hotel discounts through Expedia.com
for Disneyland Resort Hotels. Rates start at $136 per night.
New Annual Passholder discounts at Disneyland Resort
restaurants — or are there? A memo issued to hotel restaurants
last month detailed new
Annual Passholder discounts for many Disneyland Resort
restaurants. The discounts were to take effect on Monday, April
14. The biggest change was that all passholders would receive
at least a 10% discount at eight locations, with premium passholders
receiving a 15% discount at 12 locations.
Unfortunately, there is some confusion about these
new discounts. Some restaurants are already offering them, others
claim that the discounts take effect in May, while still others
say that the discounts are not changing at all. We’re trying to
sort out the confusion for our readers.
