Disney Legend Fulton Burley dies at 84
Disney Legend Fulton Burley. Photo © Disney.
We received the sad news this weekend that Disney Legend Fulton Burley had passed away at age 84. In addition to starring for 25 years in the original Golden Horseshoe Revue, Burley provided the voice of Michael, the audio-animatronic parrot in the Enchanted Tiki Room. Comedian and occasional Disneyland performer Dana Daniels had this to say about his longtime friend:
I worked with Fulton Burley in the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland from 1983 -1986 and a in a production of Sugar Babies in late 1986 to early 1987. Fulton Burley was a master entertainer and one of the funniest persons I’ve ever met. As a comedian, he was an inspiration and even today there is still a little Fulton Burley in my mannerism on stage.
You know when someone greets you with “how are you doing” and the usual response is “fine, good or keeping busy. Not Fulton, he would always respond with “SENSATIONAL”.
Fulton Burley was inducted as a Disney Legend (link) in 1995.
Pirates 3 movie premiere at Disneyland
by Alex Stroup
What could quite possibly have been the last major movie premiere at Disneyland is now in the past, and after three of these, things are pretty much down to a science for the organizers. Things seemed pretty to go rather smoothly, with just a few complaints from those who happened to be on the wrong side of Main Street (and that isn’t just the press, but the fans who were lined up behind us as well).
The fans on the east side of Main Street had direct access to autographing celebrities, and since they were in range of the official Disney cameras they all got free pirate Mickey ears. Photo by Alex Stroup.
With the tradition established, the competition for the prime viewing spots on Main Street was as intense as ever, with quite a few people camping out at Disneyland shortly after the park closed on Friday night. They were the first into the park around 6:00 a.m. and spent most of the day just sitting and watching people walk by. Most everybody who went early seemed to think it was worth it, even those on the west side of Main Street who had to settle for quick waves from Orlando Bloom while he signed autographs on the east side of the street.
Fans on the east side of Main Street were stuck behind the press, and not all of the celebrities had the time to give them some attention. Also, being out of range of the cameras most of them went earless. Photo by Alex Stroup.
The VIPs didn’t start walking the red carpet until almost 5:00, but starting around 4:00, there was plenty of piratical entertainment. Comedy acts, musical acts, and acrobatic acts worked up and down.
It’s a little known fact of history that the crow’s next was added to the top of masts only when they ran out of really tall pirates. Photo by Alex Stroup.
Not sure how one decides to become a pirate who balances on a giant cannonball while letting people throw a skull at you so you can catch it in a fishing net, but people seemed to enjoy it. Photo by Alex Stroup.
When the celebrities began come down the street, former Major League Baseball player Dave Winfield was the first one on the scene. Since I believe this is the third Disneyland event where he was the first down the line, I hereby declare him the Unofficial Grand Marshall of Disneyland Red Carpets. Photo by Alex Stroup.

As is standard for any Disney event like this, the stars of the Disney Channel were out in force.
Selena Gomez, who will be starring as Stevie Sanchez in an upcoming spin-off of Lizzie McGuire. Photo by Alex Stroup.
Christy Romano, the voice of Kim Possible and the youngest actress to play Belle in Beauty & the Beast on Broadway. Photo by Alex Stroup.
Then, of course, you have the various invited celebrities (not an insiginficant number of whom with connections to ABC) that really get the crowd going or get a good game of “I think that is…?” going.
Mark Curry (center) told us this was his first time seeing his Hanging With Mr. Cooper co-star Holly Robinson Peete in years. Holly’s husband, former football star Rodney Peete, is to the right. Photo by Alex Stroup.
Jon Voight is always one of the fan-friendliest celebrities at these events. He slowly worked his way up the east side of Main Street, disappointing everybody on the west side, until we saw him coming back down working our side. Where every celebrity we talked to mentioned just how incredibly long this red carpet was, Jon Voight actually worked it twice. Photo by Alex Stroup.
When you’re crammed into a crowded press corale, the easiest photograph you’ll get all day will be of the 7-foot-tall Chinese basketball player. Despite the assumption of many people around us, this is not Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets but Yi Jianlian, expected to be a high pick in this year’s NBA draft. Photo by Alex Stroup.
ABC’s Dancing with the Stars was well represented. Among those present was finalist (and Olympic speed skater) Apolo Anton Ohno with his dancing partner, Julianne Hough. Photo by Alex Stroup.
Then there are the Disney celebrities. These are the people who separate the Disney press from the celebrity press and we really appreciate that many of them took time to stop and speak with us for a few moments.
Dick Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios. When asked if there would be any more Pirates of the Caribbean movies he said, “you never say never,” and that if At World’s End does well he “hoped so.” When you’re a studio head, “hope so” has a way of happening. Photo by Alex Stroup.

Finally, many of the cast members from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End were on hand, but this is the point in the day that turned into something of a disappointment for those of us on the west side of Main Street. While several had time to make extra stops, the really big names were held for last down the red carpet and by then things were running a bit late and they had to move through with some haste and therefore focused on just one side of the street (interacting with the fans instead of the press is a lovely sentiment unless you are one of the press).
It does make one feel bad because behind us were a lot of park guests and fans who had waited almost as long as those across the street and because the celebrities didn’t have time (and/or inclination) to deal with the press they ended up being ignored as well. But them’s the breaks and considering that they don’t even have to open such things to the public or the press, you get what you get.
In one cool bit, Geoffrey Rush walked the carpet with the capuchin monkey from the movies on his shoulder.

Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, Jonathan Pryce, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were among those focused on the other side of the street (Bloom did turn and wave frequently). We’ll leave it as a “recognizing the back of a head” game to match the names with the pictures. Photo by Alex Stroup.
It should be noted that this was more than just a chance to see celebrities or for celebrities to see a movie, it was also a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. 1,500 people paid $1,500 for the opportunity to attend the screening and pre-party generating $2.25 million for the foundation and other contributions apparently raised that total up to over $3 million dollars for a very worthy cause.

One final note of thanks to Brenda, our Disney assigned media host for the day. She was a lot of help throughout the day.
Buried Wireless Treasure and a Pirate’s Lair
Disney Interactive announced that with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End video games, they will also be releasing free downloadable game content and cheat codes for the Nintendo DSTM at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Guests equipped with a Nintendo DS and own a copy of the game can download the content wirelessly at a hidden “X-marks the Spot” wireless access point, or hotspot, located somewhere near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The location will not be explicitly revealed, so guests will have to treasure hunt for the hotspot somewhere near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Disney will activate the hotspot on Tuesday, May 22, 2007, and it will remain active through Labor Day weekend. Downloadable bonus content will include cheat codes, three additional costumes, as well as new weapons, locations and characters in multiplayer dueling mode.
Meanwhile on Tom Sawyer Island, the Pirate’s Lair is schedule to open on Friday, May 25 to coincide with the release of the movie. According to a May 19 announcement, Captain Jack Sparrow and his mates will turn Tom Sawyer Island their own “Pirate’s Lair”. Pirates will loot, and carouse while attempting to “recruit island guests into their brotherhood of freedom and greed.”
Nemo Dream Mobile visits Washington State
The Nemo Dream Mobile continues its West Coast tour this week, stopping in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Stockton. (Note: The Stockton stop is incorrectly labeled as Sacramento on the list of stops on Disneyland’s Web site.) (link) MousePlanet reader Karen Hathaway was the lucky winner of a contest co-sponsored by Disney and Seattle radio station KOMO-AM 1100. She writes:
The contest asked us to nominate a special child for a ride to school in the Nemo Dream Mobile. My description of my 7-year-old niece being “tiny as Tinker Bell with the spirit of Walt Disney” did the trick.
The Nemo Dream Mobile barely fits between parked cars on a Seattle street. Photo by Karen Hathaway.First to arrive at the house were 3 Honda vehicles painted in an underwater theme ? one complete with scuba tanks on its roof! And close behind came the submarine, barely squeezing between parked cars on a Seattle street. It was an incredible, beautiful, colorful sight! Out came Captain Kevin to introduce himself to Mackenzie and make her official co-captain of the vessel.
Contest winner Mackenzie Tobin with Captain Kevin of the Nemo Dream Mobile. Photo by Karen Hathaway. She was buckled into her seat, which then hydraulically moved to fit in close beside the driver. Her Mom also got to climb on board along with members of the KOMO radio staff. As they drove to school, she was interviewed and broadcast live on the radio. The flotilla of vehicles (3 Honda’s, the submarine and a support motor home) pulled into the school parking lot amidst very excited children and some amazed teachers and adults.
Disney had called the school beforehand to clear the event but the teachers thought Mackenzie would be arriving in a limo ? not a submarine!
There were 11 Disney cast members as part of the crew. Once the sub was “docked” and Mackenzie came ashore, the cast members immediately got to work setting up a stage area complete with tents, carpet, etc. Mackenzie trailed Captain Kevin and helped however possible with the set-up. They also presented her with two stuffed toys: Nemo and Squirt.
During this time, music was playing from the sub and 3 animatronic seagulls appeared on the roof. They flapped their wings, turned their heads, and spoke “mine, mine, mine”. When set up was complete, the 3 youngest grades at the school came out and gathered in the tented area.
Mackenzie’s 2nd grade class from Our Lady of Fatima Parish school in Seattle. Photo by Karen Hathaway.A large whistle blew, as if a ship had just docked, and Captain Kevin appeared to lead the show. (We learned that he was one of 3,000 applicants for the position!) Also at this time, an animatronic figure of Nigel, the pelican, appeared on the roof. Captain Kevin and Nigel spoke of the sub being on a quest to find Nemo. Their script was amusing, with the seagulls frequently chiming in claiming that the submarine, and the entire ocean was “mine, mine, mine”.
Mackenzie with Dory. Photo by Karen Hathaway.Captain Kevin also explained that Crush, the sea turtle, lived in a tank inside the sub, and would everyone like to meet him? The side of the sub then opened to reveal a 100 inch-plus plasma screen and Crush. The show continued, very similar to “Turtle Talk with Crush” allowing interaction with the children and more fun and entertaining dialog. Once we said goodbye to Crush, the Captain presented Mackenzie with a certificate making her an honorary captain of the Nemo Dream Mobile, and all the children present were made honorary crew members. Then everyone was given some time to take photos before they packed up and hit the road for their next stop.
Chevron has sponsored the entire trip and is providing all their fuel, which is why you’ll find them at Chevron stations. The submarine alone carries 100 gallons of diesel.
It was a truly magical day. As always, all the Disney cast members remained true to character and made us feel like the most special family on earth. And the appearance and technology built into the submarine were more than we could have imagined. We were told that on their entire voyage down the coast, only four children would be allowed to ride in the sub, so it was truly a special prize in the Year of a Million Dreams.
The rest of Karen’s photos from that morning are here (link). Contest winner Mackenzie was even mentioned in the official “Captain’s Log” (link):
Year of a Million Dreams Central Command radioed us with a mission of critical importance. We are tasked with delivering precious cargo to two important educational installations.
We were honored to sail Ensign Kayla to the Stephenson Elementary School in Bellevue and Ensign MacKenzie to Our Lady of Fatima Parish School in Seattle.
I am happy to report that both missions were undertaken successfully. Crush informed me that he was so impressed with the “righteous” seamanship of both sailors that he “totally” wished that they could have become a permanent part of our crew.
MousePlanet reader Steven Walker also sent us photos of the Nemo Dream Mobile, this time from a stop in Kirkland, Washington. Steven writes:
The Nemo Dream Mobile docked—er— parked in Kirkland, Washington. Photo by Steven Walker. There was not a lot to it. They arrived and quickly set up the seagulls and Nigel. A cast member came out and interacted with the crowd of about 30 to 40 people. They handed out a sticker and a flyer promoting the site and an upcoming giveaway for a Honda CRV. They then handed out a Cars key chain vehicle to the kids. All this time they are prompting people to come up and take pictures with the characters on the bus. During all of this Nigel is interacting with the audience and the cast member and on occasion the seagulls would pipe in with their famous line. After about 30 minutes they wrapped it up.
Three seagulls on the Nemo Dream Mobile. Photo by Steven Walker. In talking with one of the cast members watching from the back, they only put up the big screen when they have time, are at a location that can support it and if the weather is nice. In our case we didn’t have the location as they just intended to attach passing motorist due to the location at the Chevron. Though nobody stopped in as a passing motorist. Everyone present was waiting for the submarine to arrive.
Three of these themed Honda CRVs accompany the Nemo Dream Mobile. Photo by Steven Walker. The Submarine was lead by 3 Honda CRVs, each painted with undersea scenes. Two other vehicles were also involved but stayed out of view (a motorhome and another car).

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage update
Cast members training on the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage dock. Photo by Tad Nakamura.
The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is still on track for a public premiere June 11, with Annual Passholder lottery previews June 6 and 7, media previews June 8 through 10 and the big press event the morning of the 11. If you are an Annual Passholder and haven’t yet entered the preview lottery, it’s not too late. Register through the Annual Passholder page on the Disneyland Web site (link). Winners are notified by e-mail on or about June 1 and have 48 hours to respond. June 7 is a blockout date, for So Cal Select and So Cal passports, but Disney will allow winners with those passports entry to Disneyland for June 7 if selected.
And while we’re talking about the Nemo Subs, MousePlanet reader Cindy Stephens noticed new attraction-specific T-shirts are now on sale. The only problem, Cindy says, is that only a child-size T-shirt is available. Here’s hoping Disneyland Merchandise remembers that adults like attraction T-shirts, too.

A Taste of DLR
Taste, an Annual Passholder-exclusive Food & Wine Weekends event at Disney’s California Adventure, occurred as scheduled on Saturday, May 12. Cindy Stephens attended the event and reports:
What a great event it was. We had such a great time. My favorite thing was the short ribs from Granville’s, followed by the baby back ribs from ESPN Zone and then the pork belly from the Vineyard Room. I love the mushroom bisque from Napa Rose anyway, so I can’t even begin to rate that.
The most disappointing were the two salads, from Hook’s and Naples. Neither really had much flavor or did anything for me. The sushi was disappointing, too (California roll, cucumber roll and tuna roll), but that was mostly because I know Yamabuki does so much better sushi than that.
I don’t like a lot of wine, and I don’t like chardonnay, but the only one I liked was the late harvest chardonnay that was a dessert wine.
My favorite dessert was the peach compote with vanilla bean panna cotta.
The atmosphere was terrific, and it was just about the right size crowd—not too sparse but not crowded. I hope they do this again next year.
This-n-that
…We’ve heard an unsourced rumor that Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer Island may be removed and replaced with a smaller building to be used for show staging and storage. The Fort has been closed for several years and is apparently not in very good shape.
…Mickey’s Halloween Treat tickets went on sale to Annual Passholders on May 15th at 8:00am; at first, only telephone orders were available, but the Web site finally went live around 8:40am. MousePad members are comparing notes in this thread (link).
…The Disneyland Monorail is down to one train for the next few days due to a minor accident Wednesday morning involving Monorail Purple. It seems a piece of protective canopy over the track near Autopia was reinstalled in the wrong place after being removed for painting, and Purple struck it during a pre-opening test run damaging both the canopy and the monorail.
…We’ve had reports of late-night low-level fireworks testing over Disneyland, presumably for Grad Nite and/or the Pirates 3 movie premiere. The fireworks were seen around 12:30am.
…Beginning May 15th and while supplies last, Annual Passholders can purchase an exclusive Pirates pin for $10.95 plus tax and shipping, with a limit of five pins per AP. The pin features the skull and crossbones logo from the third installment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and a fiery dragon with jeweled red eyes and Chinese characters which read “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” This pin is only available from the Annual Passholder section of the Disneyland Web site. (link)
…Alert MousePad readers noticed (link) a classified estate sale ad for Disney Legend and last surviving member of Walt Disney’s “Nine Old Men”, Ollie Johnston. The sale was Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, at Johnston’s home in La Canada, Calif. and according to the ad featured “antiques, Disney, railroad, train lamps, furniture, books, art work, paper, mill and lathe, tools.” Some of the items to be sold are pictured on the estate sale manager’s Web site (link).
…If you’re a Star Wars fan and plan to attend the upcoming Star Wars Celebration IV at the Los Angeles Convention Center, you can attend a panel discussion on Disney Parks and Star Wars Toy Exclusives featuring Disney theme park toy developer Brad Schoeneberg and Disney Design Group senior character artist Cody Reynolds. Free Metrolink and ART weekends – Disneyland Resort annual passholders can participate in a joint promotion with Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) and Metrolink. As part of Metrolink Weekends, Passholders can use Metrolink to travel for free to the Anaheim Metrolink station, then use a free ART pass to get to the Disneyland Resort. The offer is great for those who live in the Inland Empire or southern Orange County, but those who live north of Disneyland will have to get there the old fashioned way. The list of eligible origin stations is limited, and none of the southbound trains coming from LA are included in the promotion.
To take advantage of this promotion, you’ll first need to visit the promotional Web site at this link. (link = http://www.rideart.org/weekend/) Use the username “train” and password “ap” to login. Once you register, you will receive by mail:
- One 4-trip ticket from Metrolink to be used on the Weekend Train
- One round-trip ticket for the ART system from Metrolink station to the Disneyland® Resort (a $5 value)
- A free 7-day pass on Metrolink (one 7-day pass per household).
- The Metrolink Weekends schedule is available at this link, and the ART operating schedule is available at this link. (link = )

As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
