I’m (not) going to Disneyland!

After his team’s dramatic 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII, New York Giants star Eli Manning was tapped to appear in the traditional “I’m going to Disneyland!” / “I’m going to Disney World!” commercial, and a Disney press release announced that Manning would in fact be headed to Disneyland first thing Monday morning to appear alongside players from a local Pop Warner football team in a parade down Main Street, U.S.A

Media arrived early Monday morning to set up for the parade, which was moved up by 90 minutes to allow Manning time to fly to New York to appear on The Late Show With David Letterman that evening. A small crowd of fans, some sporting Manning’s jersey, arrived to catch a glimpse of the MVP. A little after 9:00, cast members began to take down the crowd-control ropes after receiving word that Manning had cancelled his appearance. The Pop Warner football players who were to have appeared in the parade with Manning did get to ride down Main Street as originally scheduled.

At first cast members told the crowd that Manning had missed his flight, but the New York Daily News (link) later reported that Manning’s flight sat “on the tarmac at Scottsdale Airport for six hours due to weather delays,” causing the player to miss not only the Disneyland parade but also forcing him to reschedule his Letterman appearance. According to Brady MacDonald of the Los Angeles Times, Disney officials have been told not to expect a Manning appearance within the next two weeks—and even then it might be at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, rather than at Disneyland. Year of the Mouse

Disneyland is recognizing the “Year of the Mouse” (2008 in the Chinese zodiac) with what has turned out to be a very popular photo location in Town Square. Mickey and Minnie alternate sets posing under colorful lanterns in their Asian-inspired costumes with appearances on Main Street in their “Year of a Million Dreams” costumes.

Character hosts, also clad in Asian-inspired costumes, manage the long lines, and PhotoPass photographers are usually available to snap photos. A sign in English, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese explain the history and celebration of the Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year and Tet.

Google’s California Adventure

There was a lot of discussion and worry about the impact the Google West Coast trip would have on Disneyland last week. Internet search engine giant Google invited its California-based employees (but not partners, spouses or children) to attend a corporate event at the Disneyland Resort, and Disneyland Park closed early on February 5 because of a private party. The crowds were nowhere as large as feared, though there were some reports that lines were longer than usual at some of the “E-Ticket” attractions such as Space Mountain, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and Indiana Jones. If it weren’t for the fact that some of the Google employees were sporting T-shirts, backsacks, caps and ID badges with the company logo all over them, most park visitors probably would not have realized that the group was in the resort.

Since the feared massive crowding and hours-long lines didn’t materialize, we instead bring you MousePlanet’s humorous top 10 signs that Google has visited the Disneyland Resort:

  1. The touch screen ordering kiosks at Taste Pilot’s Grill now have an “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.
  2. FastPass has been replaced with a system through which you place bids to win the front-of-the-line position.
  3. The “CALIFORNIA” letters in front of DCA have been repainted blue, red, yellow and green.
  4. When asked to comment on the news that Microsoft seeks to aquire Yahoo!, Larry Page replied “Who cares, I’m going to Disneyland!”
  5. The score screen on Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin now sports the Google Toolbar.
  6. Google engineers are engaged in efforts to “optimize” the bag search function.
  7. Guest Relations now answers all questions with Results 1 – 10 of about 32,000,000 for Disneyland. (0.06 seconds)
  8. AdWords appear between cartoons on the Autopia big screen.
  9. Disneyland ticket prices are pegged to Google’s stock price (GOOG) at a 1:1 ratio.
  10. Cruella, Maleficent, Captain Hook and Jafar signed pledges to “do no evil” as a condition of continued employment.

Monsters, Inc. reopens early

The Monsters, Inc. attraction at Disney’s California Adventure reopened last Friday, a week ahead of schedule. New station gates were installed during the lengthy refurbishment, and the ride got a cosmetic touch-up. Disneyland’s refurbishment schedule was updated last week to show that the Matterhorn Bobsleds will be closed February 12 and 13; and then again February 25 to 27. Cast members tell us that these two brief closures are to allow for further testing of new ride vehicles being engineered for the attraction.

Musical stores

Disney has also been renovating some of the Resort shops. The holiday and seasonal merchandise has been removed from Westward Ho in Frontierland, and the shop now houses the pin merchandise from Silver Spur Outfitters—which now features an assortment of trendy women’s clothing.

New “Art on Demand” kiosks have been installed in both Disneyana in Disneyland and Off the Page in DCA. The kiosks allow customers to browse through a collection of Disney artwork, then have their selection printed on their choice of art paper or canvas. Customers can also view optional custom framing options before they complete their transaction. Customers pay for their selection right at the store, and the finished artwork is shipped to their home in two to three weeks.

Print on Demand was first offered in 2002 with the 100 Mickeys exhibit, and the kiosks and printers were relocated from Tomorrowland to the World of Disney Store in 2004. The Disney Gallery also offered the service until that location closed in 2007 to make way for the Disney Dream Suite. In the original incarnation of the program, customers placed their order, the posters were printed right on site at the store location, and customers could take home their completed print in as little as 15-20 minutes. The World of Disney is keeping its printers for the time being, and will continue to offer same-day service, but customers who place their orders at Disneyana or Off the Page have no choice but to pay to have their finished prints shipped home. Neither store has room for the printers, and so all orders are printed and shipped from an off-site vendor.

Shipping starts at $7.50 for a small paper print; larger, shipping for canvas or framed prints is more expensive. This may not make a difference to customers who already planned to have their purchase sent home, or to those who opt to have their prints framed, but local customers who want to save on the shipping fees should make their purchase at the World of Disney Store instead of inside the theme parks.

It’s also worth mentioning that the World of Disney and theme park kiosks have a slightly different set of images and that the theme park kiosks also offer smaller print sizes than those available at the World of Disney. Customers wishing to purchase canvas prints may do better to order from the theme park kiosks. Unless the customer pays for framing, canvas prints ordered at the World of Disney are rolled into tubes, and must be professionally treated and stretched before framing. Canvas prints ordered through the theme park kiosks are stretched and mounted on wooden frames before shipping, and arrive ready to hang.

Toy Story Mania preview

Tucked in a rather unflattering portrait of the current state of Disney’s California Adventure in the New York Times last week was a preview of the upcoming $80 million Toy Story Mania attraction, including an under-construction photo of a brand-new Mr. Potato Head Audio-Animatronic figure (link).

This and That

… Senior Vice President of Operations Greg Emmer retired last Friday, February 8. To commemorate his 40-year career with Disney, Emmer will be honored with a Main Street window. The location of the window and date of the installation ceremony were not known at press time. We’ve heard unofficially that Emmer’s replacement will be Michael O’Grattan, who currently serves as Vice President of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. According to O’Grattan’s official bio, he joined Disney in 1972 and has worked at a variety of positions in Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris.

… Anaheim GardenWalk’s 14-screen cinema, to be operated by The Movie Experience, will feature a 21-and-over lounge serving alcoholic beverages, according to a principal in the project and reported by the Orange County Register (link).

… The Disneyland Resort is once again using yellow thread to embroider souvenir Mickey Mouse ears. Yellow thread was the traditional color until the park’s 50th anniversary celebration, when Disney switched to white thread that would show up better when used on the golden ears sold during the promotion. With that celebration long past, Disney has finally returned to the traditional yellow thread, though many CMs say they preferred the white thread.

… MousePlanet contributor Maggie Parr will be on hand during the Walt Disney’s Peter Pan 55th Anniversary event on Saturday, February 23 to sign her new portrait of Tinker Bell. The event will be held 9 AM – 11 AM in the exit lobby of the Main Street Opera House.

… Monday was the last chance to see the current version of the Playhouse Disney show at Disney’s California Adventure. The show closed Tuesday for a one-month renovation, during which the current script and the “JoJo’s Circus,” “Stanley” and “Bear in the Big Blue House” characters will be replaced with a “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” storyline featuring characters from “My Friends Tigger & Pooh,” “Handy Manny” and “little einsteins.” Walt Disney World’s version of the attraction debuted this same new show in January, 2008.

… There is still room for first-time teams to register for the inaugural MouseAdventure 101 division, designed exclusively for new teams and players. (Returning teams should not register for this division) Registration for the Basic and Advanced divisions of the Spring 2008 MouseAdventure sold out in a record 30 hours. The Spring event will be held on Sunday, April 13 at the Disneyland Resort. Additional details about this event are available on our MouseAdventure information page. (Link)

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Southern California 1–Day Park Hopper – Disney is not currently offering a discounted Southern California 1-Day Park Hopper at the Web site. Southern California AAA offices and Vons Supermarkets may be selling these tickets, but call ahead to confirm. Proof of residency will be required when redeeming them at Disneyland (Vons will happily sell you the ticket voucher regardless of where you are from but you still need to be an appropriate resident to use it. 2008 “Southern California 2Fer Ticket” ($66 / $56) – Offers admission to Disneyland on one day and Disney’s California Adventure on a second day for the price of a one-day, one-park ticket. The tickets are available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, as well as Disneyland Resort Hotels, Vons stores, The Disney Stores, South Coast Plaza Disney Desk and Disneyland.com, and the following restrictions apply:

  • Tickets valid for Southern California residents within Zip codes 90000-93599 and Northern Baja California residents within Zip codes 21000-22999.
  • Proof of residency required.
  • Admission valid for one day at Disneyland park and another day at Disney’s California Adventure park , but not for both parks on the same day.
  • Tickets expire 30 days from first visit. First visit must occur between January 7 and April 24, 2008.
  • Each use constitutes one full day of use.
  • Limit 8 tickets per person, per day with valid ID.
  • Tickets may not be sold or transferred for commercial use.
  • Offer may not be combined with other discounts or promotions.

Three Day Park Hopper Regularly $189/$159

Southern California CityPass ($235/$189) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort park ticket (including one early-entry day), and single-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as SeaWorld San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or onsite at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance).

You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $209.99/$169.99 (adults/child), 5% surcharge if not a Costco member, and shipping fees apply. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at a Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco!

AOCVCB 3-Day Bonus Ticket ($155/$126) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $4 (adult) and $3 (child) and shipping on all orders is at least $10. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Disney’s Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accomodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It’s Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day – one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. 2008 “2 Days Free” offer – When you buy a 3-, 4- or 5-day Parkhopper ticket, Disney will add two free days. In other words, you’ll pay the 3-day rate ($189) and receive a Parkhopper Bonus ticket good for five days. You can maximize your savings by taking advantage of the advance purchase discount, and pay just $169. The Parkhopper Bonus ticket includes one Early Entry admission. The ticket must be used for the first time on or before April 24 and expires 13 days after first use or on May 7, 2008, whichever occurs first.

Other Discounts

Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)

AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
