Pixar Play Parade’s unexpected hiatus
Just days after the new Pixar Play Parade officially debuted at Disney’s California Adventure, an incident with one of the floats sent the show into an early hiatus. A Disney spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times (link):
“During the March 19 performance of the Pixar Play Parade at Disney’s California Adventure, one of the pendulum swings onboard a float vehicle came unhooked from its post. No Cast Members or Guests were injured. In an abundance of caution, we temporarily suspended performances of the Pixar Play Parade on March 20 and 21 to allow for further inspection and evaluation.”

The incident happened on the “bug’s life” float, which features Flik, Atta, and parade performers swinging on oversized flowers. MousePad member AaronInCal posted to our discussion boards, “[O]ne of the swings in the middle of the ‘bug’s life’ float broke. The performer on the swing noticed something was wrong and stopped the swing and jumped off just before it broke and fell straight down, onto the float. It then rolled off onto the parade route. No one, guests or CMs, were injured.” All performances were cancelled through the weekend, and there is no official word on when the parade will return.
it’s a small, contentious world
The Re-Imagineering blog (link) posted a letter last week from Kevin L. Blair, son of Disney artist Mary Blair, protesting rumored changes to the “it’s a small world” attraction in Disneyland. In response to the rumored addition of Disney characters to the attraction’s scenes, Blair writes, “The Disney characters of themselves are positive company icons, but they do not fit in with the original theme of the ride. They will do nothing except to marginalize the rightful stars of the ride ‘The Children of the World’.” He criticizes a rumored plan to replace the African rainforest set with an “Up with America” scene, saying “…ripping out a rainforest (imaginary or otherwise) and replacing it with misplaced patriotism is a public relations blunder so big you could run a Monorail through it.”
The controversy centers around unconfirmed reports that, during the nine-month renovation of Disneyland’s “it’s a small world” attraction, show scenes planned for the new Hong Kong Disneyland version of the ride will be installed in Anaheim. According to a Hong Kong Disneyland 2008 promotional video, 40 Disney characters will be incorporated into the Hong Kong attraction. (You can view the YouTube video from the link above – the “small world” segment appears about 1:45 into the video).
Walt Disney Imagineering will not confirm that the reported changes are actually happening in Anaheim. In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, Walt Disney Imagineering spokeswoman Marilyn Waters said, “No one approaches our classic attractions with more reverence than Disney Imagineers who take great care when refreshing beloved attractions. As with all our classics, any enhancements made to It’s a Small World will be in the original spirit of celebrating the children of the world.”
About 90% of TMZ.com readers who participated in that site’s online poll (link) said that Mickey, Nemo and friends should not be added to the classic Disneyland attraction. MousePlanet readers participating in a discussion on our MousePad discussion board (link) seem split on the reported changes.

Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries
MousePlanet reader Gone2Disneyland found a report on TheRaider.net (link) that Disneyland will hold auditions on Tuesday, April 1 for the “Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries” show. According to the Disneyland Auditions Web site (link), the park is looking for actors to portray Indiana Jones, a female archaeologist, and “The Bad Guy.” The descriptions of the various roles seem to suggest that there are two shows in the works: One that requires Indy and the archeologist to “interact with children and lead them through a series of activities,” and another in which The Bad Guy “pursues Indiana Jones through the crowded streets of Adventureland, ending in a series of balcony and rooftop confrontations.”
MousePlanet reader OlegC speculates that Aladdin’s Oasis will be used to house the new show, and several readers have lamented that the already-busy Adventureland walkways are likely to become even more crowded once this show begins. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth movie in the successful franchise, hits theaters on May 22, 2008.

The loss of the Disney Gallery as an event venue has seemingly done nothing to slow down Disneyland’s merchandise department, which updated the Disney Gallery Web site with a host of new merchandise events:
Imagineering DVD – On Saturday, April 5, Walt Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter, Dave Fisher, Kevin Rafferty, and Michael Sprout will be on hand from 9 to 11 in the morning to sign copies of the new Disneyland Resort – Imagineering the Magic DVD. The 90-minute DVD features behind-the-scenes footage of the development of Disneyland attractions. If you can’t attend the event in person, you can order the theme park-exclusive DVD from the Disney Gallery Web site starting Wednesday, April 2, 2008 (link) .The DVD is $24.95, plus tax and shipping (if applicable).

All signing events are scheduled to take place in the Pacific Wharf area of Disney’s California Adventure park. Each chef will sign no more than two items per person, and, as always, Disney asks that you bring no personal items to be signed. Copies of each chef’s book will be available for purchase in the Festival Marketplace.
DCA will also host two artist demonstration and signing events during the festival:
- Saturday and Sunday, April 19 & 20 – stained glass artist David Bird and fine ceramic artist Elisabete Gomes

… MousePlanet reader cstephens alerted us to an ESPN Radio event to be held at Disneyland on Friday, April 4. Winners of this radio station contest will be hosted in Tomorrowland before park hours. Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage and Space Mountain will be open from in the early morning hours of 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. for contest winners. Friday is not a Magic Morning day, but the added crowds in Tomorrowland may result in longer-than-normal wait times at park opening, especially for the popular Nemo attraction.

… What’s in a name? There’s been a bit of chatter on our MousePad discussion boards about the “official” name of DCA’s new attraction. Official Disney press releases refer to the attraction as “Toy Story Mania,” but a sign reading “Midway Mania” was installed on the attraction’s facade late last week. The next day, an additional panel was added, and the sign now reads “Toy Story Midway Mania.” Whatever the name, this new attraction is reportedly almost ready to begin testing by the state Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), and soft-opening previews may begin as early as late April. The official grand opening festivities and media event are scheduled for the weekend of June 13 to 15, 2008.
… The often-overlooked “Seasons of the Vine” film attraction outside the Golden Vine Winery closes next Sunday on March 30, reportedly to make room for a preview center that will display concept art and scale models of the DCA renovation project.
… The Annual Passholder redemption center in Disney’s California Adventure has closed. Main ticket booths have been supplied with printers to enable them to print replacement and renewal Annual Passes for passholders who already have a photo on file. New passholders and those who need to update their photo will still go to the Bank of Main Street inside Disneyland park to receive their passes.
… The Bank of Main Street is getting a new ATM facing onto Main Street. A cast member says the current ATM, located on the side of the building, is too hard for guests to spot.

… Winners of the one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite are also offered the opportunity to serve as the Grand Marshal of Disneyland’s Parade of Dreams, and now those winners will take to the street in a new parade vehicle. The new vehicle is slightly larger and much more comfortable than the Disneyland Fire Engine previously used as the Grand Marshal vehicle. The new Grand Marshal vehicle is also wheelchair accessible. If you happen to see the vehicle in action, be sure to take a look at the custom tires with their Mickey Mouse-head tread.
… Voting ended this weekend for the “Top 10” finalist round of the Chief Magical Official competition, sponsored by Disney and CareerBuilder.com (link). Nearly 500,000 votes were cast in this round of the competition, and we’re waiting to learn the identities of the three finalists. The finalists will travel to Walt Disney World for their grand prize interviews, and Disney fans will again be asked to go online to vote for their favorite candidate April 14 through April 21. The Grand Prize winner will be announced in a ceremony at Walt Disney World on April 22, 2008.
… Brady McDonald of the Los Angeles Times reported last week that New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will finally make his promised visit to Disneyland sometime in mid-May (link). The Super Bowl XLII MVP missed the traditional trip to Disneyland the day after the game, as well as a scheduled appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman later that night, when weather delays and excessive air traffic around Scottsdale Airport delayed his outbound flight for more than 6 hours.

In other words, you’ll pay the 3-day rate ($189) and receive a Parkhopper Bonus ticket good for five days. You can maximize your savings by taking advantage of the advance purchase discount, and pay just $169. The Parkhopper Bonus ticket includes one Early Entry admission. The ticket must be used for the first time on or before April 24 and expires 13 days after first use or on May 7, 2008, whichever occurs first.
Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
