Congratulations to MousePlanet reader and MousePad member Justin Muchoney, who was just named Disney’s first Chief Magic Official!
From the start, his enthusiasm grabbed me, regardless of whether or not he was a member of the MousePlanet family. His performance in the in-park competitions last week solidified it. Apparently, lots of other Disney fans agreed.
Congratulations also to Tripp West and David Hawley, who did a great job getting to the finals, and proving able competitors for Justin.
I traded emails with one of last year’s Dream Jobs winners, Ricky Brigante of Inside the Magic and Orlando Attractions Magazine last night, who hung out with the candidates for the last few days. Ricky pronounced all three “wonderful people,” noting that “They’re each fun-loving, friendly, and perfect for the role.”
The ceremony was brief, including an interruption from Donald Duck, who tried to steal the competition, but once Donald’s banner covering the real winner’s name was removed, Justin was revealed to be the winner of the competition where over a quarter-million votes were cast online. Disneyland Resort annual passholders can win a sneak peek of Toy Story Mania!
The Disneyland Resort is offering annual passholders the opportunity to win a sneak peek at the new Toy Story Mania! attraction in Disney’s California Adventure (and for those still keeping score, we realize that the attraction name used in this announcement does not match the name on the attraction sign).
To enter, visit the annual passholder Web site and provide or verify your e-mail address and barcode from your pass (link). The previews are offered from Monday, June 9 to Thursday, June 12. If you are selected for a sneek peek on a day that their annual pass is “blocked,” you must purchase a blockout ticket to attend. Winners will be notified by e-mail on or around June 2, 2008.
Get ready for a Taste of California
Tickets are still available for Taste, a signature event of Disney’s California Food and Wine Festival. Taste features dishes by Disneyland Resort chefs paired with selected wines, beers and spirits. Two time Grammy award-winning jazz guitarist Paul Brown will provide the evening’s entertainment. Tickets are $125 per person (tax and gratuity included, no discounts apply). Disney has provided a preview of the menu to whet your appetite:

Big Stink with Tink

Big news breaking out of Disneyland? Well, then you can be sure you didn’t hear it from Resort president Ed Grier. After a year and nine months on the job, the tight-lipped exec has never made a major announcement that everyone in the audience didn’t already know about before he opened his mouth.
So the earth all but came to a rotational halt yesterday afternoon when, during a speech to a business group, Grier let slip that a Tinker Bell attraction would be coming to Disneyland in October.
A Tinker Bell WHAT??? Immediately, frenzied speculation arose over what sort of grand attraction Grier might be referring to, a perplexing process considering the low number of bulldozers spotted of late in Fantasyland.
In reality, this Tinker Bell “attraction” is a still-evolving meet & greet/interactive show I first reported on last summer (“Exhibit Closed,” 8/14/2007), designed to promote the upcoming Tinker Bell DVD. Since that article appeared, different components of and locations for the show have been proposed. For instance, the long-abandoned Fantasyland Skyway Station has been considered since it would allow the profitable princess pageants to continue at the Fantasyland Theater and might afford a better setting for convincing guests that they have shrunk to the size of Tink and her fellow Fairies.
If anything, Grier’s admission (and the OC Register’s referring to it as an “attraction”) makes me think Tink might still be landing in the Fantasyland Theater, since that venue would accommodate a production large enough for Grier to allude to it in the first place…
Though certainly nothing as elaborate as the word “attraction” typically implies.

Disneyland makes a grand debut into the Quinceañera business
As 15 young women from California, Florida, Arizona, New York, Texas, Illinois and Puerto Rico made their way up a red carpet and onto a stage in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle last Thursday night, the Disneyland Resort introduced a new event service targeted to the Latin-American community. Quinceañera (or Quince Años parties) are a traditional celebration marking a young woman’s transition to adulthood on the ocassion of her 15th birthday, and the celebration can range from a small religious service or mass to oppulent parties with hundreds of guests. Disney is certainly targeting the latter market, offering Princess-theme balls (for as many as 500 guests) at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels. Themes include “Cinderella” and “Beauty & the Beast.” The Walt Disney Travel Company has also created a Quinceañera Vacation Package for families who want to celebrate this milestone birthday at the Happiest Place on Earth. Similar packages are also offered at Walt Disney World.
The young ladies invited to participate in the Dream-Come-True Quinceañera were selected by Spanish-language media affiliates and event sponsors David’s Bridal, The Cristina Show and Coca – Cola. (You can read the biographies of each participant at the event Web page (link).) Cristina Saralegui, host of “The Cristina Show;” actor Andy Garcia, pop singer Frankie J and actor-dancer Cristián De La Fuente all participated in the event. The Dream-Come-True Quinceañera will be featured in a special episode of Univision network’s “El Show de Cristina,” (The Cristina Show).
This and That
…If you were at the Disneyland Resort last week you might have caught a glimpse of the new Monorail Red making circuits high above Disneyland to complete mandatory testing required by the state of California. Cast previews also began last week, and several local media reported that the new Monorail would open to the public on Friday. It looks like this grand opening has been delayed at least a week, with one cast member telling MousePlanet that the new train will not be in service until at least mid-May.

…Artists Dave Avanzino and Noah will be appearing at Disney’s California Food and Wine Festival on from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 in the Flower Garden. Each artist will be on hand to meet collectors and sign purchases. Avanzino will offer one-of-a-kind and limited edition artwork, rare Artist’s Proofs, handmade greeting cards and other Disney artwork as well as some non-Disney artwork. The artist is also expected to preview his upcoming Jungle Cruise shadowbox, and will work on elements of it during the session. Attendees can participate in a hand-on project during the session.
…We’ve heard that there will be “Dream” events on Monday, April 28 and Thursday, May 1, both at Disneyland. These events are part of the 2008 Disney Dreams Giveaway, and allow winners to stay inside the theme park for one additional hour after it closes to the public. The tickets are awarded at random by Dream Squad cast members the day of the event.
…Tickets are now on sale for the Anaheim Garden Walk gala VIP preview party on Thursday, May 15 2008 (link). Highlights of the black-tie-optional evening include dinner by Joachim Splichal and a live concert by Chicago. Tickets are $175 per person and $100 of each ticket benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

- It’s Tough to be a Bug – closed May 12 to 23 for refurbishment.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
