Two incidents at Disneyland make headlines
A man jumped to his death from the 14th floor of the Disneyland Hotel last Friday morning in what the Anaheim police department has initially determined to be a suicide. John Newman Jr. of Santa Cruz was staying in a south-facing room of the Wonder Tower (formerly Bonita) of the hotel, overlooking a parking lot. According to Anaheim Police Department spokesman Sgt. Rick Martinez, the man was believed to be in town for business. He was in the room with an adult male associate when, shortly after 11 a.m., he stepped out onto the balcony, made a statement, and jumped.

A local television station reported that at least one cast member witnessed the jump. Disneyland Resort spokesman John Nicoletti said in a prepared statement, “We are very saddened by what happened today. We are making counselors available to those who may need them.” Further details of the investigation were not available at press time.

Around the same time Friday morning, but on the other side of the resort, a Disneyland tram struck a sign as it made the turn leaving the Mickey and Friends parking structure, causing minor damage to the back car of the tram. A few guests were treated at the scene for scratches, and the trams were taken out of service for about two hours while the incident was investigated. During this period park visitors who parked in the Mickey and Friends structure were directed to walk to the Disneyland Resort, either by taking a pedestrian path alongside the tram route or by walking through Downtown Disney.
A preview of pending changes to “it’s a small world?”
Dozens of videos of Hong Kong Disneyland’s “it’s a small world” attraction have been posted to YouTube since the ride began soft-opening previews last month, and MousePlanet readers are looking to these videos to get a preview of the changes reportedly being made to the Disneyland version. One of the best videos is a four-part ride through by YouTube member “royal311,” which simply shows the attraction without either unduly emphasizing—or at the other extreme completely editing out—the character cameos.

Fairies & Fountains

Disneyland has finally decided on the location for the Tinker Bell meet and greet. According to a blurb by Al Lutz on MiceAge, Tink and her fairy friends will take up residence in a remodeled Ariel’s Grotto, the photo spot nestled behind the Buzz Lightyear building off Matterhorn Way. (A fin-free Ariel is to be transferred to Fantasyland’s Princess Fantasy Faire until her attraction in DCA is completed.)
My sources confirm that, while the Grotto will indeed become Pixie Hollow, adjacent Triton’s Gardens will also be revamped to match the theme. Winding along the path past oversized flowers and such will help kids more easily digest the concept of teeny Tink now being taller than they are.
Although WDI would love to make it an extravagant overhaul, the tight construction deadline and fluctuating budget has one Imagineer expecting that the changes will end up being “more cosmetic, nothing really fancy. This will be a temporary location—but then (we) said that for Ariel’s Grotto, and it has been here for over 10 years.”
Even with a rehab, don’t expect the fountains to restart, since they were intentionally terminated. “The jets of water that used to shoot over the guests no longer work,” revealed a cast member. “They were shut down to save maintenance costs—guests kept stuffing things in the water jets, which would cause damage—and for safety reasons. The ground would end up having a lot of freestanding water, and guests would slip and fall.”
My main hesitation with the whole project is theming such a visible location, right off the hub, to a setting and characters in a straight-to-DVD movie. Remember Gadget, the brilliant inspiration for Gadget’s Go Coaster? Neither do I. The upside is that while this overhaul is designed to push a long-delayed DVD and a kiddie book series, Disney can always say it’s actually there to pay tribute to Tinker Bell, the character most identified with Disneyland since Day One.

Disneyland Resort hotels change reservation deposit policy
The Disneyland Resort hotels have announced a new reservation deposit policy for stays on or after May 10, 2008. Under the new policy, the first night of the stay is charged at the time the reservation is booked; the cancellation deadline is now five days prior to arrival instead of three days. A hotel manager said that this change will bring Disney up to “industry standards,” and MousePad moderator Cathy (Drince88) notes that the new Disneyland Resort policy is consistent with the Walt Disney World policy for room-only reservations.
Prom season at the Disneyland Resort
This is an advisory for local residents who are considering spending a Saturday night out at Downtown Disney: Prom season has officially begun. In addition to the Disneyland Resort hotels, several Downtown Disney restaurants can double as prom venues, and this weekend saw events at Tortilla Jo’s, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen and the House of Blues. The prom traffic caused gridlock on the approaches to Downtown Disney, and by early evening Anaheim police department and Disneyland security officers were restricting access to the Downtown Disney parking lot to taxis and limos only. All other vehicles were directed toward the the overflow lot behind the Paradise Pier Hotel. If you have your heart set on a movie at the AMC theater or dinner at Catal, make sure you call ahead for reservations, and consider parking in the Mickey and Friends structure to avoid the DtD traffic.
This and That
…We have a few more details about the first-ever Danskin Women’s Triathlon at the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, June 15 2008 (link). The event begins with a .35 mile swim through the waters of Paradise Bay (the lagoon inside Disney’s California Adventure), continues with 10-mile bike race around the Disneyland Resort and ends with a 2.5-mile run. The transition area and finish line are in the Timon parking lot. The first wave of athletes will enter the water at 6:00 am. Spectators are welcome, and the race sponsor has posted a Spectator Etiquette page on the official event Web site (link). Friends and family of the athletes are encouraged to volunteer for Saturday’s Expo and for the race day on Sunday (link). Both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure will observe normal operating hours on race day, but expect higher-than-normal traffic in the area after the conclusion of the race. …DVCNews.com is reporting that some West Coast members of Disney’s Vacation Club have received a “save the date” postcard about a member’s reception and “Getaway Days Travel Expo” to be held May 24-26 at the Paradise Pier Hotel. The site also reports that the preview units for the new Disney’s Grand Californian Villas will be opening about the same time, and speculates that members who attend the event will get the first peek at the new offering. According to the postcard, additional information about the event will be sent to members at a later date.
…A construction wall around the Sun Plaza fountain may be the first sign of the pending renovation of Disney’s California Adventure. The fountain is slated to be demolished to make room for a replica of the Carthay Circle Theater.

…Cast members tell us that the Disneyland Resort will stop offering engraved “guest of honor” name badges as soon as the current inventory of blank badges sells out. The temperamental engraving machines are reportedly difficult to use, and it is too easy for untrained cast members to make changes to template settings that render the machines inoperable. Cast members say that they ruin more badges than they successfully engrave, and the program actually loses money.
…Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Disney Cruise Line will add a fuel surcharge of $8 per person, per day to cruise bookings made on or after May 28 (link). CruiseCritic.com reports that the $8 surcharge applies to just the first two passengers in each cabin, a $3 per person, per day fee applies to each additional passenger in the cabin (link).
…This weekend may have marked the final performances of the Aladdin and Jasmine Storytale Adventure at Disneyland. The attraction is not listed in the entertainment guides published for the rest of the summer on the Disneyland.com Web site, and there have been persistent rumors that the small outdoor theater venue will be repurposed to host an Indiana Jones show or meet-and-greet.
…A Prince Caspian pre-parade is now running 20 minutes before scheduled performances of the Parade of Dreams at Disneyland. We’ll have photos in next week’s Disneyland Park Update.
…The Los Angeles Times reported last week Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s staff is considering a slate of new tax proposals, including a new sales tax on “entertainment purchases,” including theme park tickets (link).

- Sailing Ship Columbia – closed May 12-15 and May 19-21. Fantasmic! is not scheduled to perform these dates.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
