Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries

Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries promotion officially kicked off last week to commemorate the opening of the newest film in the Indy franchise. The main attraction in the summer-long promotion is Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stone Tiger, a new show in what was formerly known as Aladdin’s Oasis but is now simply “The Oasis.” This new show fills the gap for a short, child- participation activity created when Aladdin & Jasmine’s StoryTale Adventure closed earlier this month. The show begins with the introduction of Dr. Rachel Flannery, who is apparently an associate of Dr. Jones. Rachel describes the myth of the Stone Tiger and produces the staff of the Tiger God, explaining that Indy was searching for the headpiece but hasn’t been heard from recently. He did, however, leave several clues which Rachel requires help from the audience— especially the children—to solve.

Indiana Jones appears dramatically from the mouth of the Stone Tiger (which looks suspiciously like the Cave of Wonders) and produces the lost golden headpiece. Handing the headpiece to Rachel with an admonishment to be very… careful, Indy starts to tell the audience about his latest adventure. However, Rachel mates the staff and headpiece and either becomes evil or reveals her evilness as she threatens Indy with destruction. A dramatic and fairly well-choreographed fight ensues with the Tiger God’s staff changing hands several times but finally ending up with our hero. Dr. Flannery falls to her apparent doom through the mouth of the Stone Tiger and Indiana Jones, with a final clever quip, climbs a ladder and disappears into the tower—only to reappear moments later fighting a large man of indeterminate origin on the roof of Tropical Imports.
Disney bills these Adventureland appearances as “Random Acts of Indy,” and the short sequences cause much less congestion in the already-crowded Adventureland walkways than previously feared. One of the skits takes place on the rope bridge of Tarzan’s Treehouse, which unfortunately requires a brief closure of the attraction.

MousePlanet’s Andrew Rich said the audience seemed largely pleased as they filed out of the Oasis after the first show Monday morning. MousePlanet reader reactions to the new show range from. “a waste of 30 minutes,” and “pretty violent!” to “we liked it… a nice change of something!” You can share your opinion in this thread on our MousePad discussion boards (link). The Web site (link) for the Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries promotion encourages visitors to pick up an Indiana Jones Adventure Map near the entrance to Aladdin’s Oasis (or print one out online before heading to the park). Once you solve the puzzle on the map you can download Indiana Jones-themed desktop wallpaper or screen saver. An “Adventure Photo Location” outside the Oasis is meant to re-create the rolling boulder scene from the Raiders of the Lost Ark film and Disneyland attraction, but MousePad member Bytebear”describes the set as “not much more than a big cardboard box. It’s really cheap and cheesy. It’s about half a step above a movie theater lobby display.” The “enhancements” to the Jungle Cruise attraction and skipper spiel are minor—a few added comments in the spiel reference recent explorations by “Dr. Jones,” and a handful of “artifacts” are scattered through the Jungle.

Disney Magic returns to Los Angeles
The Disney Magic cruise ship (with several MousePlanet staff members on board) returned to the Port of Los Angeles Sunday morning for an encore season of seven-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera. The ship left Port Canaveral on May 10 for the voyage through the Panama Canal, stopping in Aruba, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas during the trip to Los Angeles. The Magic set sail Sunday afternoon for the first of 12 seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises, stopping in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Cruises leave each Sunday through August 10, and the Magic will return to Florida on Aug. 17.

The ship first visited Los Angeles in 2005, and received a major overhaul during a “dry dock” period the following fall. The Magic now boasts a giant 24-by-14-foot LED “Ariel view” screen; an expanded fitness center; new treatment rooms—including private treatment suites for couples—and the Ocean Quest area and bridge simulator designed for children ages 10-14.

Mickey’s Trick-or-Treat Party tickets on sale
At least for annual passholders, tickets are now on sale for this October’s Mickey’s Trick-or-Treat Party (a new name for the same Mickey’s Halloween Treat that has been held for the last several years).
The separate ticketed costume parties at Disney’s California Adventure will be held on the following dates (with the Annual Passholder discount dates in bold):
- Friday, October 3
- Friday, October 10
- Thursday, October 16
- Friday, October 17
- Wednesday, October 22
- Thursday, October 23
- Friday, October 24
- Tuesday, October 28
- Wednesday, October 29
- Thursday, October 30
- Friday, October 31
The standard advance purchase ticket price is $29. Annual Passholders will receive a $4 per ticket discount for the bolded dates above. Any dates that don’t sell out will have day-of-event tickets available at the park for $37.00. The one exception to these prices is the event on Halloween itself (October 31), the tickets for that date are always $37.00, regardless of when they’re purchased. Children under the age of three do not require tickets. Tickets can be purchased at the Disneyland.com Web site (link) or by calling (714) 781-4400.
As with the past events, the park is specially decorated for the parties with costumed characters throughout the park and plenty of trick-or-treating for kids and adults alike. Some rides and restaurants are open as well and there is live entertainment at several locations.
All party goers are encouraged to wear costumes but keep in mind the following guidelines from Disney:
- Costumes should be child-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive or violent.
- Guests may wear masks. However, masks must not obstruct vision and eyes must be visible at all times.
- Guests that dress like Disney Characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other guests.
- Costumes should not drag on the ground.
- Costumes should not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
- Costumes should not contain any weapons which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
- Guests of all ages may only wear costumes to the Mickey’s Halloween Treat event to which they have valid tickets. During normal Park operating hours, costumes are only permitted for Guests ages 9 and younger.
Finally, each party ticket provides free parking for one vehicle at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (standard car fee; larger vehicles will have to pay the difference).
Innoventions Dream House AP Previews
Annual Passholder previews of the new Dream House exhibit, opening in June, have been announced. The previews, which don’t require any form of reservation or ticket will be during hours that Innoventions is not generally open. The schedule is as follows, and is on a first come, first served basis.
- Tuesday, June 17, through Thursday, June 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
- Friday, June 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and again from 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
- Saturday, June 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
- Sunday, June 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

DVC members get sneak peek at Grand Californian expansion
The Disney Vacation Club hosted Getaway Days Travel Expo” for members this weekend at the Paradise Pier Hotel, giving members the opportunity to get the first look at the models for the new DVC units being constructed at the Grand Californian hotel. Unfortunately photography was not allowed inside the units, which formerly served as the models for the Saratoga Springs DVC Resort. Guides explained that the newly installed Grand Californian decor is still in the concept stage, and that significant changes could be made before the models open to the public.

Member response to the event was so strong that Disney added an additional member reception on Friday night. The receptions were held in the Pacific Ballroom of the Paradise Pier Hotel, and featured an small expo of Disney travel divisions including Adventures by Disney and the Disney Cruise Line. This first-ever California DVC event continued with a group presentation detailing some of the ways DVC members could use their points to vacation with Disney, and included “previews” of the new DVC expansion of the Animal Kingdom Lodge, the two new ships of the Disney Cruise Line and the “re-imagineering” of Disney’s California Adventure. All of the information presented has been made public in other formats before this, but it was still a nice perk for members.

No DVC event would be complete without an appeal for members to add points, and several sales representatives (“Guides” in Disney-speak) said that the current incentives are among the best DVC has ever offered. DVC is still selling the Saratoga Springs and Animal Kingdom Villas properties, but members who join DVC or add on points through the Disneyland Resort sales office are considered “founding” California members, and will receive the first opportunity to purchase at the Grand Californian property when sales begin, likely in 2009.

Toy Story Midway Mania Cast Member Previews
PanFan, a member of our MousePad message board (link) as well as a Disneyland cast member has now experienced Toy Story Midway Mania more than a dozen times during cast member previews and her response is strongly positive. Her opening quote:

Adventures By Disney spring offer about to expire
Adventures By Disney has a deep discount available for some itineraries, but you need to book by Saturday, May 31. You can save up to $650 per adult and $600 per child on any of six varied itineraries.

…Virtual Magic Kingdom, the massively multi-player online Disneyland game that kicked off as part of the park’s 50th Anniversary celebration, closed its virtual doors last week. As a result the VMK related games and machines inside of Innoventions have been swapped out for new machines promoting other online games from Disney: Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Disney’s Toontown Online. Disney is offering former VMK players 30-day unlimited access subscriptions to both Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Toontown Online. To take advantage of this offer, send an e-mail with your VMK character name to vmk@disneylonline.com. (Per the instructions from VMK, do not send your login, password or other info; just your VMK character name).
…An exhibit for Pixar’s 2009 title, Up, has been added to the Character Close-Up area in DCA’s Animation Building. In Up, Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Ed Asner) has spent his whole life dreaming of traveling the world without every quite doing it. When he becomes friends with a young Wilderness Explorer named Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai) he starts to discover the life he never lived but always meant to.
…This story in LA Magazine might be of interest to some readers for a bit of insight into what is was like, for at least one person anyway, to be Jack Sparrow at Disneyland. Just a warning though, the story uses language (including sexually explicit language) that isn’t appropriate for everyone.

…The “Create-Your-Own Ear Hat” program first introduced in Walt Disney World has arrived at the Disneyland Resort. The offering is located in the Gag Factory in ToonTown, and the selection is reportedly smaller than that offered at Walt Disney World. We’ll have more information and pricing in next week’s Update.

…Last week the Disneyland Resort presented scholarships totaling $55,000 to 11 Orange County high school students as part of the third annual Disneyland Resort Scholarship Program. Scholarship winners were announced last week during a ceremony at Disney’s California Adventure park.

- 2008 UEA convention – October 16 & 17 (in Utah). Many Utah public schools close so teachers can attend the Utah Education Association convention, which creates a four-day weekend for the students. Expect the resort to be busy that weekend—some claim ‘UEA’ stands for ‘Utah Escapes to Anaheim.’
November 2008
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 31 (in Nevada). This state holiday creates a three-day weekend, and many families head to the Disneyland Resort.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
