AP previews of Midway Mania begin today
Disneyland Resort annual passholders who won tickets in an online promotion get their chance to preview the new Toy Story Midway Mania attraction at Disney’s California Adventure starting today. Winners were notified by e-mail last week, sparking a flurry of questions from members of our MousePad discussion board on exactly how to claim their prize—and what to do if they hadn’t won. The e-mail instructs winners to bring a copy of the confirmation, along with a valid Disneyland annual passport for each member of their party, to the West information booth “at least 30 minutes before your time slot.” That wording is a bit confusing, and MousePlanet has confirmed that winners can receive their ride vouchers anytime between 30 minutes prior to the start of and up until 30 minutes before the end of their ride window. (For example, someone who was assigned the 10am to 3pm ride window can exchange their confirmation letter for the ride ticket anytime between 9:30am and 2:30pm.) Because of the way the invitation is worded, the largest crowds are likely to arrive right at the start of each window, so you might find a shorter wait toward the middle of the window.

Remember that each member of your party must be present and must have a valid annual passport to receive a ride ticket—don’t send the kids ahead into the park and try to collect their ride tickets for them. The ride ticket entitles each person to ride Toy Story Midway Mania once, though we have been told that re-rides may be possible depending on the lines. (Tickets were not collected at times during cast previews this weekend, and some attendees claim they rode more than a dozen times). Finally, in an “silent” change to the published policy, winners who hold a SoCal or SoCal Select passport will not need to purchase a blockout day pass if they won a preview on Wednesday or Thursday.

So, what are your chances of getting to ride during the preview if you didn’t win? Unfortunately, this is almost impossible to predict and will depend on how many winning passholders actually show up for their assigned time; attraction wait times; operational issues and a number of other factors. Several readers—including non-passholders—reported that they were able to ride Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage during the AP previews last year because they happened by when the lines were short. If you are a local passholder and can easily pop into the resort, it might be worth a shot, but we don’t recommend making a special trip. (Better yet, wait until readers report back from Monday’s previews to see how strict the enforcement was). AP previews are scheduled through Thursday and the media event begins Monday afternoon, so it is likely that the ride will be “soft-open” to the general public Friday and Saturday.
Cast member previews of the ride began last week, and the construction walls around the attraction came down for the first time, giving most park guests their first glimpse of the Mr. Potato Head animatronic in the queue. Cast members reported a few glitches with the spud—including a malfunctioning intrusion mat that causes the figure to freeze—but park visitors were delighted by the interactive carnival barker.

The shop at the attraction’s exit opened two weeks ago with a generic hodgepodge of Pixar character merchandise, but more of the attraction-specific merchandise has arrived, including two new attraction posters and a slew of T-shirts.

Two new food service locations have opened along DCA’s boardwalk near the Midway Mania attraction. Both Don Tomas and Hot Dog Hut are essentially outdoor vending locations rather than quick-serve restaurants—both sell only bottled drinks and prepackaged food that is cooked elsewhere and delivered to the stands. Both are on the boardwalk; Don Tomas is across from Midway Mania, Hot Dog Hut is near the Sun Wheel.

2008 Hi Seoul Korea Performing Arts Showcase
Disney’s California Adventure will host the 2008 Hi Seoul Korea Performing Arts Showcase June 9 – 15, 2008 at a temporary “Festivale Internationale” stage constructed inside the Pacific Wharf area, just outside the Pacific Wharf Cafe. According to the event Web site (link), the showcase will include traditional dance, tightrope acts, singing and pageantry.
Reviving Sleeping Beauty

Late last week, a construction wall appeared around the long-locked exit to the diorama inside Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Imagineers and construction workers were spotted entering and exiting the space, which was closed nearly seven years ago due to post-9/11 terrorist fears.
While the on-site Imagineers remained mum, some construction workers revealed that the work is to restore the Sleeping Beauty Walkthrough.

The challenge, as was encountered in bringing back the subs, lies in affordably restoring what was basically left to rot for the better part of a decade. The damage evidently was more than neglect. Entertainment Show Services reportedly abused the castle interior and demolished entire sections of the walkthrough so that elements for the “Remember” fireworks show could be installed.
No completion date has been announced, but considering the amount of work that needs to be done, don’t expect anything till the latter part of the year. Perhaps in time for the movie’s 50th anniversary on January 29?
Red-hot Monorail

Back in 1957, the marvel of Tomorrowland’s House of the Future was a microwave oven that could bake a potato in three minutes. Today’s Tomorrowland, with a brand-new “House of the Future” at Innoventions, is unveiling a similar futuristic marvel: a Monorail that can bake a guest in three minutes.
Disneyland has two brand new Mk VII Monorails running around the track, Red during park hours and Blue after hours, furiously trying to work out the final kinks. Alas, the fixes have been endless:
A chassis so bulky that it crashed into the beamway.
A steering system with a flawed design.
Windows that began falling out due to glue failure, requiring a bolted redesign.
Problematic safety sensors.
And, most uncomfortably, poor air circulation, thanks to not-fully-opening windows and air-conditioning-less cabins.
“Despite what people have said, there is no A/C except in the nose and tailcone,” confirmed one cast member. “There are ventilation fans in each of the passenger cabins. However, the fans are not strong enough to keep the cabins at a comfortable temperature for humans—unless you are visiting from the planet Venus. The windows of the Mk VIIs open from the bottom and swing out… unlike past monorails where the windows slid down like an automobile’s. But the windows of the Mk VIIs do not swing out enough to allow for adequate ventilation. Add this all together, and you get an oven on a sunny day.
“The idea of adding A/C to the cabins has been ruled out,” he continued. “It would add weight to an already overweight train. And the electrical load put on the track will be too high to accommodate three monorails.”
How the designers wound up with semi-closed cars is confusing, considering the park’s near-50 years of operating experience. The original 1959 Mk I had full-open windows, to which were added winter closing windows and safety bars. The Mk III introduced roll-down windows, similar to the Mk V.
And many old-timers who designed, built and operated the Monorail’s earlier incarnations are a phone call away. None, of course, was consulted on any facet of the Mk VIIs’ design or construction. Sure, several notables have been given cursory tours of the shiny new vehicles and invitations to the big grand opening ceremony, originally planned for February. Those invitations still don’t have a date on them.

…The Danskin Women’s Triathlon at the Disneyland Resort will be held this Sunday, June 15 2008. The event begins with a .35 mile swim through the waters of Paradise Bay (the lagoon inside Disney’s California Adventure), continues with 10-mile bike race around the Disneyland Resort and ends with a 2.5-mile run. The transition area and finish line are in the Timon parking lot. Parking for the event is at the Anaheim Convention Center, and is $10. The first wave of athletes will enter the water at 6:00 am. Spectators are welcome, and the race sponsor has posted a Spectator Etiquette page on the official event Web site (link). Friends and family of the athletes are encouraged to volunteer for Saturday’s Expo and for the race day on Sunday. The host hotel for the event is the Anaheim Hilton. Both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure will observe normal operating hours on race day, but expect higher-than-normal traffic in the area after the conclusion of the race. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($130/$110) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. Summer Fun Pass ($99) – The Disneyland Resort’s latest discount is the “Summer Fun Pass,” a 3-day park hopper available to Southern California residents for $99 per person ages 3 and older. This represents a savings of up to $70 per ticket over the advance-purchase price of a 3-day Park Hopper. The ticket is valid 45 days after the first use, and first use must take place between June 16 – August 30, 2008. The ticket is not valid on July 4, 2008. The ticket is available for purchase at some authorized offsite Disneyland Resort ticket outlets, including Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, Stater Bros., and Gelson’s, Disney Stores and military base MWR offices.The ticket is not available at the Disneyland Resort, so be sure to purchase your tickets before you arrive. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($169/$139) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value) Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($169/$139) available through the Disneyland Web site (link). You can print these tickets at home, though the tickets from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau Web site (see below) are slightly less expensive. 2008 Southern California CityPass ($247/$199) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort park ticket (including one early-entry day), and single-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as SeaWorld San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or onsite at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $217/$174 (link), 5% surcharge if not a Costco member, and shipping fees apply. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at a Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco! Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
