4th of July at the Disneyland Resort
Disneyland celebrate Independence Day with an all-new 20-minute fireworks show, Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky, scheduled for a performance at 9:25 p.m. on Friday, July 4 and replacing the “Remember… Dreams Come True” Fireworks Spectacular for the night. Disneyland is open from 8:00 a.m. to midnight on the Fourth of July, while Disney’s California Adventure is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
There is a great deal of debate about whether high fuel costs will keep people away from the Disneyland Resort this summer, or will instead prompt locals to take a “staycation” closer to home. Regardless of the long-term effects such issues may have on summer attendance levels, you can always expect larger crowds at the Disneyland Resort during a three-day holiday weekend. The combination of a Friday holiday and a new fireworks show are also likely to draw a large number of annual passholders to Disneyland for the evening, so plan accordingly.

A large limb broke off a tree in the New Orleans Square section of Disneyland Thursday night, prompting a temporary closure of the area. MousePlanet reader Alan Joyce was at the park when the incident happened and sent photos from the scene to MousePlanet. Alan reported that people in the immediate area said they heard what sounded like fireworks going off, followed by a few small branches falling before the larger limbs fell across the railings and walkways.
Alan said that he witnessed no serious injuries. A Disneyland spokesman said that about two dozen people were treated for minor scratches, but the Orange County Register reports that another park visitor reported seeing two people being pulled from underneath the downed limb. A MousePlanet reader who claims to be a cast member at a New Orleans Square restaurant posted to our MousePad discussion boards that, “The company is sugar coating the details. There was an injury—and by that I don’t mean a simple scrape or bruise—but nothing life threatening.”
Alan told us, “By the time I left the park, they had chainsaws out and were cutting the tree into smaller pieces for removal. They were fairly touchy about spectators and photo-taking throughout the whole process, employing the fleet of Fantasmic ushers to surround the cordoned-off areas and keep people moving.”

New menu for the French Market
A few months ago, we got wind of an expanded “healthy foods” initiative planned for the Disneyland Resort, and were told to expect some major changes to restaurant menus throughout the resort. You may recall that, as part of a “Healthy Kids” program, Disney replaced french fries and soft drinks in the children’s meals (at least on the menu) with carrot sticks and juice boxes. Parents could still order chips, fries and soft drinks for their kids if they wanted at most locations, but it was no longer the default.
Now the Disneyland Resort is doing much the same to adult meals, and the French Market is the first restaurant to receive an all-new menu featuring “healthier” entree options. Gone is the very popular fried chicken in all of its many combinations; now diners can munch on a lower-fat citrus-grilled chicken breast, roast beef or—in a daring departure for theme park food—fish. Most entrees come with mashed potatoes and/or seasonal vegetables instead of fries.

MousePlanet readers are talking about the change on our MousePad discussion boards (link). Reader Oleg noted that the new French Market menu has several similarities with the Cafe Orleans menu. “If you look closely, the menu items are quite similar in terms of ingredients, they are just mixed up in presentation (salad, entree, etc).” This makes more sense when you consider that Cafe Orleans and the French Market will use the Plaza Pavillion as a temporary prep kitchen this fall when the main New Orleans Square kitchen complex closes for a lengthy renovation.

Hotels union takes dispute back to the streets
Members of Local 681 staged two informational pickets last week to draw attention to their ongoing labor dispute with the Disneyland Resort. Union members, some dressed as Disney characters, carried picket signs and marched between the Paradise Pier and Grand Californian hotels Thursday night. This is the second such protest in recent weeks as contract negotiations between Disney and the union continue.
The 2300 cast members represented by Local 681 have been working without a contract since their prior agreement expired in January 2008. After a rocky few months during which the union refused to even meet with Disney unless the negotation took place at a Disney-owned hotel, talks finally began in May at a nearby Hilton. The meetings have been described by one member as “contentious,” and a negotiation session in late May ended early when Disney representatives walked out after cast members in attendance began to vocally protest one of the company’s proposals.
The main topics of conflict are health insurance and job status. Under the contract that expired in January, Local 681 employees who work an average of just under 18 hours per week received “free” health insurance, paid for by Disney through contributions to the union’s insurance fund. Disney is proposing to reclassify cast members who work less than 30 hours a week as “casual regular” employees, which impacts eligibility for health insurance as well as vacation and holiday pay. New hires could join only Disney’s “signature” health plan instead of the union plan under the new proposal, and would not be elligible for insurance for their first 90 days. Existing employees would also need to work an average of 30 hours per week to retain their union health insurance plan, and for the first time would be required to contribute to the cost of the plan, between $1102 to $2641 per year according to a statement on the union Web site.
A Disney spokesperson told the Orange County Register that the company is frustrated that the union is trying to negotiate the contract in the media. Unite Here 681 President Ada Briceño told the Register “Talks have progressively gotten worse. We have been making sure Disney knows we’re serious,” and said that a strike vote was not out of the question. Representatives from Local 681 have not responded to repeated requests for comment by MousePlanet.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
Downtown Disney merchant discounts – Visit the Disney Ani-Mate Web site (link) and complete a short quiz to gain access to an interactive map where you can download and print coupons to a series of Downtown Disney shops and restaurants. The current batch of coupons all expire August 1, 2008, and significant restrictions may apply. Disneyland Resort annual passholders may receive the same or better discount, so be sure to check before you shop.
