Disneyland celebrates 53 years
Disneyland plans to mark its 53 anniversary this Thursday with several merchandise events and a low-key rededication ceremony from 4:45 to 5:15pm in Town Square, just after the flag retreat ceremony. The merchandise events begin at 9:00 in the morning with an artist chat with Manny Hernandez, who painted “The Happiest Street on Earth,” a piece that commemorates the park’s birthday. The chat will be held in Carnation Plaza Gardens near Sleeping Beauty Castle. The public can purchase a lithograph and two canvas giclees of his painting at the Disneyana Shop on Main Street.

Disneyana is also selling a new Z-scale sculpture by miniaturist Robert Olszewski. The 1/220th size Rocket to the Moon sculpture is expected to sell at $59 each. Two versions are available: An open edition and an Annual Passholder edition limited to 1000 pieces, each with a commemorative plaque.

Retired Disneyland Master Illustrator Charles Boyer and his son, artist Bruce Boyer, will release their latest collaborative painting. The original is available for $19,500, and framed giclees and unframed deluxe prints are also available. All four artists will be on hand for a signing and meet-and-greet event from 10 a.m. to noon in the Main Street Cinema. Disneyana is selling all merchandise at shop opening on the day of release.

MousePlanet turns 8
Come celebrate the 53rd anniversary of Disneyland Park and the eighth anniversary of your favorite Disney Web site on Thursday, July 17. We’re planning two meeting times that day to accommodate those who plan to spend the whole day in the parks, and those who can’t.
- Carnation Plaza Morning Meet at 10:00 a.m. – Stop by and pick up your MousePlanet button and Mini MouseAdventure quest sheet. This meet begins just after the artist chat with Manny Hernandez, so don’t be surprised if you find a large crowd exiting the area. MousePlanet’s Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix plans to be at a table (hopefully in the shade) near the rock wall at the back of the area, so be sure to come say hi. This is an informal meet, and there is no need to RSVP. In the event that the Carnation Plaza area is closed off that morning for the artist chat, we will instead meet at Fantasia Gardens, the dock-patio located directly across from the Matterhorn queue chalet. This Mini MouseAdventure is just for fun, and will not be collected or graded, so don’t worry about having to turn it in by a specific time.
- French Market Dinner Meet at 6:00 p.m. – Come try (and critique) the new French Market menu with MousePlanet staff and readers. Again, there is no need to RSVP, but plan to meet at the tables outside the French Market at 6:00 before ordering so we can try to save enough seats together. Any remaining MousePlanet buttons and Mini MouseAdventure quest sheets will be available at the evening meet.

Monorail Red back in service
After making a brief public appearance on July 3 and 4, Disneyland’s new Monorail Red was put back into limited passenger service last week. Though air scoops have been installed on top of the passenger cabins, cast members tell us that the new monorail must be taken off line once the outside air temperature climbs near 85 degrees, and is put back into service only when the temperature drops. On hot days this means two monorails are in service for the peak morning and evening rush when Disneyland Resort hotel guests use it as a means of transportation to and from the hotels, but only one monorail is online when guests want to return to their hotel for an afternoon swim or nap.

Though the new Mark VII monorails are designed to hold up to 120 passengers—12 fewer passengers than the 132-capacity Mark V—the capacity is currently capped at 15 passengers in each of the five middle cabins, with an additional five passengers in the air-conditioned nose cone and seven in the air conditioned tail cone, for a total of 87 passengers. This artificial limit is in place to help minimize overheating in the cabins in the event that the Monorail becomes disabled on the track between stations, as happened on the Fourth of July.

Howard Johnson’s Hotel debuts Castaway Cove
The Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel in The Anaheim Resort (a MousePlanet sponsor) unveiled its new Castaway Cove water attraction last week. The hotel closed and filled in one of their two pool areas to create this water play area, which features a 30-foot tall pirate ship with water canon, cargo-net climb, and two slides. Castaway Cove also offers a 300-gallon drench bucket that spills every seven minutes, a 15-person hot tub, Speedy’s Sprayground toddler pool and fountain play area, outdoor shower area, and restroom facilities.

The Castaway Cove area is open daily from 9 a.m. until midnight, and an attendant is on duty from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. when the ship and slides close. Water features are shut off at 10 p.m. for “quiet time,” with the hot tub and Speedy’s Sprayground open until midnight. The hotel’s remaining Garden Pool area was recently remodeled and expanded, and is open daily from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Come CHOCWalk with MousePlanet

…Following an incident last month where a tram leaving the Mickey & Friends parking structure hit a billboard, causing minor injuries to some passengers and minor damage to the tram, the tram route in front of the first loading zone has been repainted with colored stripes to help guide drivers as they pass another tram. The first loading zone is still not in use, and the damaged billboard has not been replaced.

…Brady MacDonald from the Los Angeles Times wrote last week about the 36th annual Knott’s Scary Farm event in his blog, including details of new and returning mazes (link).
…The Knot, Inc, which operates the popular wedding Web site theknot.com, is sponsoring a sweepstakes with five grand prizes of a Disney Dream Honeymoon package (link). Though the contest is aimed at couples, the official rules state “(v)acations are for one (1) winner of the Sweepstakes and one (1) guest of winner’s choosing,” so singles and already-married couples can also enter. July 31 is the last day to enter.
…MousePlanet’s Lisa Perkis had the opportunity to watch WALL-E at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood last week, and reports that “the stage show is one of the better ones I have seen at the El Cap, and if you like WALL-E merchandise, it’s really worth a trip up to check out what the Studio Store offers.”

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

This represents a savings of up to $70 per ticket over the advance-purchase price of a 3-day Park Hopper. The ticket is valid 45 days after the first use, and first use must take place between June 16 – August 30, 2008. The ticket is not valid on July 4, 2008. The ticket is available for purchase at some authorized offsite Disneyland Resort ticket outlets, including Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, Stater Bros., and Gelson’s, Disney Stores and military base MWR offices.The ticket is not available at the Disneyland Resort, so be sure to purchase your tickets before you arrive. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.
Disney’s Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accomodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It’s Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day – one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
Downtown Disney merchant discounts – Visit the Disney Ani-Mate Web site (link) and complete a short quiz to gain access to an interactive map where you can download and print coupons to a series of Downtown Disney shops and restaurants. The current batch of coupons all expire August 1, 2008, and significant restrictions may apply. Disneyland Resort annual passholders may receive the same or better discount, so be sure to check before you shop.
