Disneyland is closed… no, it’s not… yes, it is… Around 1:00
p.m. on the afternoon of Friday, December 27, cast members on the parking
lot tram began to warn guests heading into the resort that Disneyland
was closed, and that they would only be allowed to enter Disney’s California
Adventure (DCA).

This wasn’t exactly accurate, and caused a good deal of confusion for

guests. What really happened was that, due to massive crowds, Disneyland

temporarily suspended sales of new one-day Disneyland passports. Guests

who already had valid Disneyland park tickets, including Annual Passholders,

park-hoppers and those who had already entered the park that morning,

were allowed to enter Disneyland.

The only people really affected were those who approached the ticket
booths to buy a same-day Disneyland ticket on Friday afternoon. These
guests were offered a modified park-hopper ticket, which they could use
immediately to enter Disney’s California Aventure. When Disneyland was
reopened to new guests around 4:30 that evening, those guests were allowed
to use that same ticket to enter Disneyland for the evening.

Several MousePad members reported that both parks were exceptionally
crowded all weekend. The Disneyland Resort has requested volunteers from
the Anaheim Police Department to be stationed in the esplanade between
Disneyland and DCA on New Year’s Eve to help handle the 90,000 guests
expected that night.

Beating the Crowds – You are going to Disneyland this week,
you want to see all of the holiday sights, but the thought of coping with
the holiday crowds is more than you can bear. Skip the stress – book
a tour! The Holiday
Time at Disneyland
tour, now in its second year, makes it easier
to see all that Disneyland has to offer in this wonderful time of the
year. The tour takes you to the Haunted Mansion Holiday, “it’s a
small world,” and provides priority seating for the Christmas Fantasy
parade.

Tours are $39 per person. Tours are offered through January 5, 2003.
We strongly suggest making advanced reservations by calling (714) 781-4400.
To make same-day reservations, visit City Hall.

We suggest that you book the last tour of the day, which gives you primo
seats for the parade and a great view of the nightly fireworks. Find even
more tips for handling holiday crowds in this
column
.

A new pet for Disneyland – The Orange County Register reports
that Walt Disney Imagineering will introduce the first walking Audio-Animatronic
figure at either Disneyland or DCA this spring. The figure will take the
form of a dinosaur, and be able to interact with guests.

Christmas Clearance Sale – Save 50% on selected holiday items
througout the resort. Now’s the time to stock up on holiday decorations
and gifts for next year. Be sure to check out the Showcase and Greetings
from California shops – they are less crowded locations, and may
have a better selection than the busier China Closet and World of Disney
stores.

New snacks at the Disneyland Resort – MousePad member cstephens
alerted us to some new munchies at Disneyland and DCA. The treats include
chocolate-dipped cheesecake on a stick, apple fries, and stuffed soft
pretzels. Read this
post
for the complete list and locations.

Last chance to see… If you are visiting the Disneyland Resort
this week, don’t miss these holiday treats, big and little, that make
this season so magical. Most are offered through January 5:

  • Cookie decorating on Main Street, U.S.A. – Act like a kid again
as you decorate a giant sugar cookie.
  • The Disney characters, dressed in their holiday finest.
  • Believe… In Holiday Magic fireworks – Disneyland’s fireworks
are amazing year-round, but the holiday version is especially magical.
  • Snow on Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Gorgeous Christmas decorations throughout the resort.
  • The beautiful tree in the Grand Californian Hotel.
  • Pumpkin Pie fudge.
  • “it’s a small world” Holiday – Love it or hate it,
“it’s a small world” takes on a whole new look every winter.
  • Christmas Fantasy Parade – one more time! (You know you’ll miss
this parade if it’s ever replaced.)

  • Santa!
  • Storybook Land Canal Boats – Miniature Christmas trees and holiday
decorations adorn the tiny cities along the canal.
  • Haunted Mansion Holiday – Visit Jack Skellington’s vision of
    Christmas.
  • Fresh candy canes at the Candy Palace – these are usually made
on Fridays and Saturdays, but call the Candy Hotline at (714) 781-0112
    for the current schedule.
