It’s show time
If the Blue Sky Cellar had not closed last week for a quick refurbishment, the countdown clock just inside the door would show that the premiere of the World of Color is only about 100 hours away.
The previews for Imagineering, Disney executives, and cast member end tonight, and the KOST radio station listener party is scheduled for Tuesday. Some of the crew then get a night off before the big media premiere on Thursday (our sources dismiss the rumors of a soft-opening Wednesday night). After the reporters, celebrities and grad night teens clear out of the resort early Friday morning, it’s time for the general public to get their first look at the show that is supposed to turn the page on a new era for the newly renamed Disney California Adventure park.

A lot of World of Color details were announced at a press event last Tuesday, including another dining package, confirmation of the plan to use Fastpass tickets for the show, and a new entertainment offering called Glow Fest (more on that later). After agreeing to a press embargo until later this week (with the exception of publishing up to five photos from the performance—which today’s park update photos will be from), invited reporters were allowed to watch a World of Color dress rehearsal. Be sure to check back with us at 9:00 p.m. (Pacific) on Thursday, when the embargo is lifted and we can publish more photos, video, and reviews of the World of Color.

Disney fans tend to fall into the I-must-be-there-first crowd, the I’ll-see-it-when-I-see-it crowd and the I’ll-never-see-it-in-person-so-show-me-everything-online crowd. MousePlanet will attempt to provide coverage this week for all of our readership, with Frank Anzalone and Steven Ng covering the media event and opening day and night. Fastpass
Mary Niven, vice president of DCA, describes the World of Color viewing area as a theater, and says that the viewing in Paradise Park and the bridge to Ariel’s Grotto will be controlled via Fastpass tickets. The Fastpass you obtain will indicate which show and seating area you are assigned to. The left, center, and right sections of the “theater” are color-coded, and we’ve heard from people who attended the Cast member previews that the “Blue” section is center. Cast members will be stationed at the machines to help park guests learn the ropes, but be sure to have your entire group together or you risk being issued tickets to different seating areas or even different shows. A Disney press release cautions that guests in large parties may not be guaranteed admission within the same reserved viewing area, and that all guests ages 3 and older must have their own Fastpass ticket. The good news: it sounds like the WoC/GRR Fastpass machines will not be connected to the Fastpass network, so your World of Color Fastpass won’t impact your ability to get Fastpass tickets for attractions. For those members of the planning-to-be-first-in-line club, here’s what we know about the crowd control plans for Thursday night/Friday morning: Thursday night is a Grad Nite at the Disneyland Resort, which means extra security precautions to keep grads in the park where they belong, and everyone else far, far away. The Pumbaa parking lot, across Harbor Boulevard from Disneyland, is the only lot that will be open before the grad night buses depart. Disney has asked that guests do not arrive before 5 a.m., but those who come earlier (a small contingent is expected to camp out overnight, much as they did for the Captain EO premiere), will be “allowed” (but not encouraged) to form a queue outside the east bag-check tents, on the Harbor Boulevard. side of the Esplanade. Those who arrive from the west, or Downtown Disney side, will be escorted across the esplanade to join the line on the other side. Remember that much of Downtown Disney will be locked down due to Grad Nite, so don’t plan to park in that lot. Around 7:00 a.m. after the grads have left and the buses have cleared property the central esplanade area will open, and a World of Color Fastpass line will form outside the gates to Disney California Adventure. We have conflicting information about how, when, and where Resort guests will be allowed to form a line or enter DCA; one plan calls for a line to be created at the DCA gate located at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, but there are some other issues that may prevent that from happening, not to mention the potential complaints from hotel guests when their sleep is interrupted by what could be hundreds of people lined up below their $400-a-night hotel room windows. If the Grand Californian entrance is not used, we’ve heard that a Resort guest-only line may be formed at the main entrance, and that those guests will be escorted into DCA first, ahead of non-guests waiting in the overnight line. All of this is subject to change at any moment, so if you booked a room at a Disneyland Resort Hotel for June 10, please check with the front desk for the most up-to-date information. Once the DCA gates open (which may be well before the park’s scheduled 10 a.m. opening), the World of Color line will be led to the Grizzly River Run Fastpass machines, where a troop of cast members will help visitors claim their Fastpass tickets for the 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. shows. We’ve also heard that the Foods department will have some sort of signage or kiosk set up to try to sell picnic packages to those who are waiting for Fastpass tickets, or who arrive after all tickets have been distributed. When asked about standby options, Disney’s Mary Niven indicated that there are great viewing options around Paradise Bay. A Disney press release states, “Guests who do not obtain a Fastpass or reserve dinner packages for World of Color may still watch the show from viewing locations on the boardwalk side of Paradise Bay.” Disney also released details of the long-rumored “picnic” viewing option for World of Color last week, introducing a lower-cost alternative to the prix fixe meals offered at the Wine Country Trattoria and Ariel’s Grotto. These cold picnic meals come with a non-alcoholic beverage, and include a voucher for access to a reserved viewing area for the World of Color. (Note: Disney now states that the prix fixe meals come with “preferred reserved viewing,” indicating that picnic customers will have a lesser view.) There are seven meals to choose from (see menu details below). Picnic meals are $14.99 per person; adults and kids pay the same price. Kids’ meals come with a light-up World of Color bracelet. Adults can upgrade their beverage to beer or wine for an additional charge. Beginning June 11, Disneyland is accepting online orders up to 60 days in advance. Since the system launches on the day of the first performance, and you may not make same-day online orders, those who wish to purchase a picnic for opening night will have to do so at the walk-up counter that morning, unless Disney changes its mind and opens the online ordering option a day early. After June 11, same-day walk-up meals will be offered if space is available. If you order online, your meal includes seating at the first show. If you purchase a walk-up meal, you’ll receive a ticket for the second show. You can pick up reserved meals at the new Sonoma Terrace of the Golden Vine Winery patio between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on your selected show date. If you pre-order online, your entire order will be packaged in a reusable World of Color tote bag. (A Disney representative said that each meal booked order comes with the bag but a Disney press release indicates it’s one bag per order, so we’re asking for clarification). Note: The Disney Dine Line does not handle reservations for this offer, but there will be a phone number posted on the reservation Web site, once active, where diners with dietary restrictions or food allergies can call to discuss available accommodations. Several readers have asked whether guests with disabilities can participate in these dining offers, and whether they will be sent to a separate viewing area instead of the viewing area that comes with their selected dinner packages. According to a Disney representative, the entire World of Color viewing area is wheelchair accessible, and that sections in each viewing area are set up so that guests using wheelchairs will not have anyone standing in front of them. Menus: European antipasto Mediterranean vegetarian All-American Taste of Asia A Little Splash of Color children’s options include low-fat milk, juice box, or small bottled water, and a light-up bracelet: Little Squirt’s Box – sliced apples, string cheese, low-fat yogurt, Goldfish crackers and World of Color Confetti Vanilla Cupcake Junior All-American – chicken leg, Goldfish crackers, apple wedges and World of Color Confetti Vanilla Cupcake Lunchbox Classic – peanut butter and Smucker’s jelly sandwich, apple wedges, and World of Color Confetti Vanilla Cupcake Dubbed by Brady McDonald at the Los Angeles Times as “a consolation prize for those unlucky visitors who can’t find a spot to watch ‘World of Color’, ” Glow Fest is DCA’s effort to draw attention—and hopefully crowds—to the east side of the park and to the Hollywood Pictures Backlot District while the west side and Paradise Pier area gear up for the nightly World of Color. Glow Fest begins in the Sun Plaza each night around 6:00, with “world cultural” musicians “Glow Dancers” and “Color Sprites” performing on a stage that looks to have been borrowed from the 1970s. As dusk falls, the crowd can participate in a performance Disney calls “drumming down the sun,” using drums built into the base of the stage. Disneyland Resort Director of Entertainment Development Doug McIntyre characterizes the performances as a “ritual experience” celebrating the transition from day to night. Once the sun sets, a DJ in a Volkswagen bus will lead a procession into the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, which will be turned into a street-sized dance club. Revelers will be able to dance at six satellite stages placed down the center of Hollywood and participate in interactive performance art projects, all while sipping beverages purchased from in-street bars, serving, among other things, “Glow-jitos.” Tall light towers positioned along the street will feature plasma monitors at their base, and an interactive station near Playhouse Disney will let guests “paint with color.” At the end of Hollywood Boulevard, up to 20 people at a time can dance in front of special cameras, and see their images transformed and projected onto the Hyperion Theater wall. McIntyre said Disney has partnered with visual artist Nick Bertke, known as “Pogo,” to create Disney “mashups” that will be played throughout the night. Pogo is known for creating original music and video mixes using motion picture sound samples, and has developed a cult following for his mixes of Alice on Wonderland, Up, Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, and Steven Spielberg’s Hook. We’ve included his Up video; you can find more Pogo videos on his official site (link). “Upular” by Pogo. You Tube video. The Disneyland Web site now lists “Carnivale of Color” nightly at DCA, but there is no official information about the show and it was not mentioned during the World of Color preview event. Cast members have told us that Carnivale of Color is a preshow to the World of Color, and will feature two emcees and a troupe of Cirque-like performers, carrying oversized puppets with stylized versions of Disney characters. The show is scheduled at 8:30, before the first World of Color performance. The Wine Country Trattoria is scheduled to open this week at Disney California Adventure, but the eatery had a quiet soft opening last week to let cast members become familiar with the new menu. The upper and lower patios have been covered with new wooden trellises, offering additional shade for the mostly outdoor seating areas. The patio area on the restaurant’s East side has been renamed the Sonoma Terrace, and will serve as the distribution point for the World of Color picnic meals. Dinner and dessert menus are available on MousePad, and the following is their lunch menu: Appetizers Rustic Bruschetta – roasted artichokes, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes and caramelized onions on crostini with tomato oil and parmesan ($6.99). The Italian Slice – diced pepperoncini, Kalamata olives, roma tomatoes, cucumbers and shaved parmesan with red wine vinaigrette ($5.49).= Fritto Misto – calamari, mussels, green beans and artichoke hearts lightly breaded, served with pepperoncini aioli ($9.49). Chef’s Soup Selections ($5.49). Caprese Salad – tomatoes, basil and mozzarella drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar ($7.49). Entree Salads Tuscan Salad with grilled shrimp or chicken – blend of romaine and radicchio, red and yellow grape tomatoes, celery, green beans, cannellini beans and roasted peppers tossed in creamy Italian dressing ($14.99). Arugula Salad – smoked chicken, fennel, red onion, spiced walnuts and goat cheese with fig-balsamic dressing ($14.99). Trattoria Salad – green salad with tomatoes, green olives, smoked mozzarella, sauteed Yukon gold potatoes, tomato crostini and seasonal vegetables with red wine vinaigrette ($12.99). Entrees Pasta Your Way – your choice of campanelle, spaghetti or tagliatelle pasta in your choice of preparations: Today’s sustainable fish – topped with citrus pesto served over tomato-vegetable ragu ($19.99). Roasted vegetable panini – zucchini, eggplant, red peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and lemon-goat cheese spread on multi grain bread with a green salad ($11.99). Lasagna Rustica – served with house-made bolognese ($15.99). Chicken Panini – herbed chicken breast, arugula, red onions, provolone and walnut-porcini aioli with a green salad ( $11.99). Beverages Wine Flights Sangria ($8.50) Bottled Beer ($5.75-6.75) Press pot coffee ($6.99) Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Minute Maid light pomegranate lemonade, freshly-brewed iced tea ($2.99) Smartwater or San Pellegrino 1 liter ($7.59) Tinker Bell and Friends of Buzz Lightyear Punch – Minute Maid light lemonade punch served in a souvenirs Fairies or Toy Story 3 cup with a glowing Tinker Bell or Buzz Lightyear clip-on light ($6.49). The new water play area in DCA’s Paradise Park opened to guests last weekend, offering a place for kids and brave grownups to cool off by running through a flat fountain. The fountain cycles through a series of effects including pop jets, wide “fans” and mist. Unlike water play areas in other parks of Resort, there is no rubber coating on the pavement around this fountain, and guests are required to keep shirts and shoes on at all times, a policy which prompted complaints from parents who prefer to strip their kids down before letting them play in the water. The fountain is located in the middle of the new World of Color viewing area, and Cast members tell us that the water will be turned off about two hours before the first show to give the pavement time to dry off. Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, Disney’s Vacation Club members and Disney Visa Cardholders can now purchase tickets to the 2010 Mickey’s Halloween Party events. The separate ticketed costume parties at Disneyland will be held on October 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29 and 31. Ticket prices range from $44 to $59 depending on the date and when the tickets are purchased, a substantial jump from 2009: Along with moving the party from DCA to Disneyland, Disney has added an hour to the actual event, introduced a mix-in plan where event guests can enter Disneyland up to three hours before the announced start time of the event and made the Halloween Screams fireworks exclusive to event guests. These changes come at a price, and each ticket is $17 to $18 more expensive than last year. The AP discounts are only offered for the first Friday night event and the Tuesday night events; all other nights are regular price. As with the past events, the park is specially decorated for the parties with costumed characters throughout the park and plenty of trick-or-treating for kids and adults alike. The event Web site says “nearly all Disneyland® Park attractions” and some restaurants are open as well and there is live entertainment, craft stations and character meet-and-greet at several locations. All party goers are encouraged to wear costumes, but should keep in mind the following guidelines from Disney: All event attendees—including adults—may dress in their favorite Halloween costume and must follow these and other guidelines as determined solely by Disney: Costumes should be child-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive or violent. Guests may wear masks. However, masks must not obstruct vision and eyes must be visible at all times. Guests that dress like Disney Characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests. Costumes should not drag on the ground. Costumes should not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest. Costumes should not contain any weapons which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon. Guests of all ages may only wear costumes to the Mickey’s Halloween Party event and during the designated hours prior to the scheduled event for which they have valid tickets. During normal Park operating hours, costumes are only permitted for Guests ages 9 and younger. Guests that do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into the event unless their costume can be modified to meet the above standards. We have been told that adults may enter Disneyland in costume beginning at 3:00 p.m. for Tuesday 6:00 p.m. events and 4:00 p.m. for Friday and Halloween 7:00 p.m. events; there is no need to wait until the “official” start of the event. Finally, each party ticket provides free parking for one vehicle at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (standard car fee; larger vehicles will have to pay the difference). The Radiator Springs Racer car was spotted making slow laps of the test track in Cars Land again this week, but the ever-growing backdrop wall is making it increasingly difficult to get photos of the area from atop Mickey’s Fun Wheel. We did capture this very short, very hard-to-see video of the car making its rounds of the track, followed by someone walking slowly behind it. We want to thank the nearly 400 players who turned out for this weekend’s MouseAdventure Day at the Park event, the second of our MouseAdventure 10th Anniversary events. Scores and photos from this event will be posted online later this week. …The Disney Vacation Club has announced that The Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is on pace to sell out this summer. The first West Coast DVC property officially opened last November, and sales have been much slower than Disney’s early sales pitch would have led prospective owners to believe. …New Summer Nightastic banners have been installed around the Disneyland Resort, featuring a somewhat generic image of Sleeping Beauty Castle. After last summer’s embarrassment (where the Summer Nightastic banners featured artwork of the new and trouble-plagued Fantasmic dragon), it’s interesting—not surprising—to note that the banners make no mention at all of the World of Color show. …New World of Color floral displays have been added throughout Disney California Adventure. …Disney relocated the Japanese carp from the Disneyland Hotel pond outside the Wonder tower to the Huntington Library in San Marino this weekend as part of the preparations for the start of the expansion plan we wrote about last week. The koi ponds and waterfall area will be demolished to make way for an expanded pool area, and complete renovation of the hotel’s central courtyard. …A couple of the All-Star Mickey statues appeared at the Disneyland Resort last week. The Atlanta Braves statue is currently located outside the west bag check tents, and the Florida Marlins All-Star Mickey is on display outside ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim statue is located outside Anaheim City Hall in Downtown Anaheim. …Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Refurbishments and Attraction Closures
Disneyland
- Tomorrowland Terrace – closed through July 2 for refurbishment. The Jedi Training Academy show is still offered while the restaurant is closed.
Disney’s California Adventure
Seasonal refurbishments:
- Blue Sky Cellar – closed June 3–9 to install a new exhibit.
Construction-related closures:
- Golden Dreams – closed. The building that once house this film-based attraction has been demolished, and will eventually be replaced with the new Little Mermaid ride.
- Burger Invasion – closed. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this former McDonald’s location, but an employee publication lists May 24, 2011 as the return date.
- Corn Dog Castle – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date. During the renovation, corn dogs are available at Bountiful Valley Farmer’s Market.
- Souvenir 66 – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date, and “Seaside Souvenirs” as the new name of the store.
- Golden Vine Trattoria – closed through June 9; will be renamed “Wine Country Trattoria.”
- Tower of Terror Fastpass – not offered through August 15 due to construction of the connector between Bug’s Land and Tower of Terror.
- Bug’s Land / Tower of Terror connector – the temporary connector path will be closed through August 15 to allow construction of a more permanent route between the two lands.
Downtown Disney
- Ridemakerz – closed for construction of their permanent space in Downtown Disney. The store is scheduled to reopen sometime in June.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $204/$174 |
3-Day Summer Fun Pass ($108) and 3-Day Summer Fun PLUS Pass ($129) – The 2010 3-Day Summer Fun Pass is $108, $9 more expensive than the 2009 version, and offers Southern California residents (ZIP Codes 90000–93599) and Northern Baja California residents (ZIP Codes 21000–22999) three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure within a 45 day period. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. Unlike the 2009 offer, this base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $21 per person, you can upgrade the Summer Fun Pass to a Summer Fun PLUS Pass, a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. Both tickets have a 45-day “fuse,” (instead of the usual 13- or 30-day limit), giving you more time to plan your return visits, but have more block out dates than last year: July 2-4 and August 22-23. The first use of the pass must be between June 11 and August 29, 2010. The Summer Pass can be purchased at www.disneyland.com, the Disneyland Resort box office, Disney Stores, Disneyland Resort Hotels, and a variety of southern California supermarkets and retail chains, including Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Bros., Food 4 Less, Gelson’s and Deardens. Disney states that “resident ID is required,” but MousePlanet readers who purchased these tickets from off-property retailers last year consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can – and may – require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether this will happen to you is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but we feel it would be irresponsible for us to not at least make our readers aware of the “official” policy, regardless of what the park’s actual practice may be. Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until August 23, 2010 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket has no further blockout days in 2010, and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass. The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229)– This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Disneyland Resort Two More Days & Nights Free offer –This latest deal offers a five-night, five-day Disneyland Resort vacation package for the price of a three-night, three-day package, giving you two “free” hotel nights and two additional days of theme park admission. Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50% at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
