Disneyland’s 55th | More Color for DCA | Maliboomer: what goes up, must come down | Local 11 takes to the streets again | MouseAdventure Holiday: Trick or Treat | Resort Construction Update | This and That…
Disneyland’s 55th
Disneyland marked its 55 birthday on Saturday with a low-key celebration highlighted by major merchandise releases, a park-wide “sing along,” and a reunion of the All-American College Band. At the same time, MousePlanet kicked off the celebration of our own 10th anniversary with a presentation of Charles Phoenix’s Retro Disneyland Slide Show, and capped the night with dinner and a viewing of the new World of Color show. If you couldn’t be at Disneyland in person Saturday, we hope these images will bring a little of the celebration to you.
product release and signing featuring artists Dave Avanzino, Jody Daily, Kevin Kidney and Noah, and customers waited in long lines outside the store for a chance to purchase ceramic replicas of classic Disneyland popcorn boxes and soda cups, anniversary shirts and limited edition Vinylmation figures. Long lines also formed at the park’s hat shops, where Mickey Mouse ear hats with a special anniversary-dated embroidered design and slogan were available for one day only. A second anniversary design, this one with a “55 Years of Magic” logo, will be available through the end of July. (MousePlanet reader lola2009 posted photos of both hats on our MousePad discussion board). Dooney and Burke fans celebrated part of Disneyland’s anniversary while in line at the Disney Vault 28 store in Downtown Disney, waiting to purchase the newest purses featuring vintage-inspired artwork by Ian Ray.

At 4:15 pm, guests were invited to return to Town Square to sing Happy Birthday to Disneyland. The sing-along was followed by a “flash mob” of Disney cast members and characters who filled the street in Town Square to perform a brief dance routine to an upbeat rendition of “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes.” The Urban Dictionary defines a flash mob as a “group of people who appear from out of nowhere, to perform predetermined actions, designed to amuse and confuse surrounding people,” but Disney somewhat muted the surprise element by roping off the street ahead of time. Following this performance, Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis remained on Main Street for about an hour, standing in the hot sun to greet guests, pose for photos and sign their anniversary park maps.

some readers felt a little let down by the scale of Disneyland’s 55th event. Others felt that the park did enough to mark the occasion (especially considering that the Resort completely ignores DCA’s anniversary each year).
More Color for DCA
Last week, Disney dropped its pretense of adding a third World of Color show due to popular demand each night, and finally officially announced its plan to present three performances of the new water spectacular each night through Labor Day at Disney California Adventure park (really through September 6, according to Disney’s online calendar) (link). Although there is no information yet about whether Disney plan to expand its picnic offering to the third show, we suspect it’s unlikely, since the picnics currently offered for the second show are sometimes not selling out until right before show time. Also unlikely is a third prix-fix dinner seating for the additional show. This mean all Fastpass distribution for the third show will still be via the Grizzly River Rapids Fastpass machines.
The Resort also announced that DCA is staying open until 11:00 each night through the end of the summer season, and that Toy Story Midway Mania and Mulholland Madness is remaining open during performances of World of Color. There was no mention made of King Triton’s Carousel or the Silly Symphony Swings, but both attractions have been closing early then reopening for about 30 minutes between the first two performances of World of Color.
Maliboomer: what goes up, must come down
Last week I mentioned that the map of Disney California Adventure posted to the newly revised Disneyland.com Web site was missing the illustration of the Maliboomer. A sharp-eyed reader pointed out that the S.S. Rustworthy was also absent from the map, and someone else shared that this new park map—sans Maliboomer—had actually first been distributed in the media kit at last month’s World of Color press event. It’s been an open secret that the Maliboomer would not be part of the new DCA, especially after the ride was notably omitted from the “fun map” posted in the Blue Sky Cellar last year and plastered on construction walls around Paradise Pier during the World of Color construction, but Disney has yet to make an official announcement about its plans to remove the ride.
Now the ride is back—at least on Disney’s Web site. Sometime last week, a new version of the DCA map was posted to the site, this time with the Maliboomer back in place. As MousePlanet’s Alex Stroup pointed out, the “new” map also shows the Golden Zephyr with two tops, the Silly Symphony Swings passing through California Screamin’, a new second story for Pizza Oom Mow Mow and dueling tracks for Mulholland Madness—so clearly the image is still a work in progress. Meanwhile, Disney is still not commenting on its future plans for the Maliboomer, though Paradise Pier attractions cast members say they expect the ride to close forever on Tuesday, September 7, the same day the neighboring Pizza Oom Mow Mow closes for a major renovation project. Just for fun, here are the three versions of the DCA map.
Local 11 takes to the streets again
The main road outside of Disneyland was closed for about 45 minutes Monday night, on the eve of the Major League Baseball All-Star Parade and Game, due to a protest by UNITE Here Local 11. This action, dubbed the “1,000-Mickey March” by event organizers, was the second demonstration the union—representing approximately 2,300 bellmen, dishwashers, room attendants, and cooks at the Disneyland Resort hotels—staged last week in its ongoing contract dispute with Disney. Union representative Leigh Shelton said in a written statement that 800 people participated in the rally, while a Disney spokesman put the number at about 450.
Following the protest, Disney issued a statement that read:
“It is unfortunate that Local 11 continues to focus its energy on protesting rather ensuring its members have the security of a contract. In the two and a half years that Local 11 members have been working without a contract, the company has negotiated nine collective bargaining agreements that include yearly pay raises and affordable health care with 27 local unions, representing more than 11,500 cast members, demonstrating our success in building relationships with union leaders and working with them for the betterment of our cast.”
The press release issued by Local 11 included the statement, “Demonstrators will urge companies like Aramark, which staffs Angel Stadium and the Convention Center, to agree to fair contracts with affordable benefits and avoid a messy labor dispute like the one that has plagued Disney for more than two years.” This gives some insight into the motivation for this renewed schedule of demonstrations against Disney, which started with a one-day “strike” by some hotel workers Sunday afternoon.
About 2,000 employees of Aramark, which runs food service concessions at Angel Stadium of Anaheim (formerly Anaheim Stadium), the Anaheim Convention Center, and the Honda Center, are either also working without a contract (as are the Disney workers represented by the same union), or have contracts that expire this month. I’ve previously written about the financial situation facing Local 11 if Disney succeeds in pulling its workers out of the union-administered health care plan, and the union most certainly cannot afford to lose another 2,000 people if Aramark follows suit. If Aramark is waiting for Disney to settle its contract with Local 11 before attempting to negotiate its own three contracts, Local 11 is under even more pressure. Local 11 is already locked in a contentious dispute with Disney, so it’s easier to make Disney the official target of these demonstrations, but to do so in a time and place (in front of the Anaheim Convention Center, during the MLB All- Star Fan Fest) where Aramark can’t help but see what type of action the union could focus on them if they choose.

Resort Construction Update
While demolition work continues on the Disneyland Hotel’s Wonder tower, a few MousePlanet readers have expressed continued hope that the beautiful waterfalls outside the tower can be saved. Reader Imaginears has been most vocal about the planned destruction of the waterfalls, and has launched an online effort to encourage like-minded folks to ask Disney to save the waterfalls. In his post in the Operation Save “Wonder” tower Waterfall! thread on our MousePad discussion boards, reader Tomorrowlander shared an image overlaying Disney’s rendering of the hotel’s new pool area onto a current map of the property, and says, “You can see how they originally planned to keep the waterfalls… as the new plans just barely touch on exactly where the koi ponds and waterfall are.” Imaginears and Tomorrowlander hope that enough complaints from Disneyland regulars will prompt Disney to revise their plan, and perhaps incorporate the existing waterfalls into the new recreation complex.

…MousePlanet reader brassplayer shared this sad news with us this weekend:
While July 17 is typically a day of celebration for Disneyland fans, I would like to report one sad event that occurred yesterday: The passing of Jane Ethridge Correa. While Jane’s name might not be familiar to most, anyone who has visited Disneyland has probably heard her sing. Jane is the featured female soloist on the Fantasmic soundtrack. She also sings the lovely duet during the show’s “Princess Medley”. Additionally, Jane spent some time as a DL CM performing the role of Snow White.
Jane leaves behind a husband and four children. The next time you see Fantasmic, if you can spare a thought for this wonderful performer, I know her family would appreciate it. I’m so glad that her beautiful voice will continue to delight Disneyland visitors for years to come. Godspeed, my friend.
…Disneyland Hotel cast members were notified last week that Hook’s Point, the Lost Bar and Crocs Bits ‘n’ Bites will close on August 1 to prepare for the start of the planned refurbishment of the hotel’s central pool and dining complex.
…If you missed David Koenig’s column last week, be sure to see what he has to say about the possibility that walkaround Marvel superheroes characters may make their first Disney theme park appearances at Disneyland this Halloween. David also reports on a possible future for Disneyland’s Candlelight Processional.
…Disneyland is hosting several merchandise events next weekend, including the Kingdom Keepers III: Disney in Shadow book signing by Ridley Pearson, and the “Sizzling Summer Sale” for passholders and Disney Vacation Club members at the World of Disney store, both on Saturday, July 24. Additional details are in the July issue of the merchandise newsletter at our MousePad discussion board.
…If you’ll be at the Disneyland Resort this week, don’t forget that Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is closed July 19 to 23 for refurbishment.

The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).
One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $72/$62 One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $97/$87 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |
|
Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $151/$131 |
AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($149/$129) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $1 per ticket net savings isn’t enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you’ll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. | |
Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $204/$174 |
3-Day Summer Fun Pass ($108) and 3-Day Summer Fun PLUS Pass ($129) – The 2010 3-Day Summer Fun Pass is $108, $9 more expensive than the 2009 version, and offers Southern California residents (ZIP Codes 90000–93599) and Northern Baja California residents (ZIP Codes 21000–22999) three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure within a 45 day period. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. Unlike the 2009 offer, this base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $21 per person, you can upgrade the Summer Fun Pass to a Summer Fun PLUS Pass, a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. Both tickets have a 45-day “fuse,” (instead of the usual 13- or 30-day limit), giving you more time to plan your return visits, but have more block out dates than last year: July 2-4 and August 22-23. The first use of the pass must be between June 11 and August 29, 2010. The Summer Pass can be purchased at www.disneyland.com, the Disneyland Resort box office, Disney Stores, Disneyland Resort Hotels, and a variety of southern California supermarkets and retail chains, including Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Bros., Food 4 Less, Gelson’s and Deardens. Disney states that “resident ID is required,” but MousePlanet readers who purchased these tickets from off-property retailers last year consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether this will happen to you is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but we feel it would be irresponsible for us to not at least make our readers aware of the “official” policy, regardless of what the park’s actual practice may be. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($184/$154) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value) AOCVCB 3-Day Bonus Ticket ($179/$149) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $5 off the advance purchase price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $4 per ticket net savings isn’t enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you’ll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Tickets include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday) (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $229/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($199/$169) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. AOCVCB 4-Day Bonus Ticket ($194/$164) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $5 off the advance purchase price for both adults and children. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
