Two new parades to debut in California; Electrical Parade to remain in WDW for now

First, the complaint: Walt Disney World is keeping the Electrical Parade. Oh, we knew it was going to happen—Florida isn’t exactly known for returning the things they borrow from Disneyland in a timely manner (like Walt’s Office, which was loaned to WDW for a “temporary exhibit” in 2001 and never returned)—but last week’s announcement in the Disney Parks Blog that Disney’s Electrical Parade would begin an open-ended run once Summer Nightastic ends on August 14 just served to confirm what we knew would happen when those floats were shipped cross-country earlier this year.

At least they haven’t cut the floats in half and made a stage show out of them like they did for Disneyland’s Lion King Parade. Yet.

While Florida fans (and most of our East Coast-based MousePlanet staff members) may be gloating about keeping Disneyland’s signature parade a while longer, California fans are rejoicing over another piece of parade news. The Disney Parks bloggers announced last Friday hat Celebrate: A Street Parade is leaving Disneyland sometime in 2011 (link). True, that wasn’t the actual headline, but by revealing concept art for the new Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, Disney confirmed that the much-maligned “not a parade” will be moving on.

According to Disney, the new parade is “an explosive music festival with thrilling rhythms and bold percussion that will bring to life some of the most beloved melodies from Disney films.” The floats will feature live musicians, drummers and dancers, including characters like Mickey Mouse who will “play live and will encourage members of the crowd to join a giant jam session.” The concept art shows what appears to be five floats and four drum-shaped stage units. The drawing is described as showing things that may appear in the final parade, so some elements may not be as shown here. Disney says the new offering will “stomp, clang and drum its way to Disneyland Park next year,” but a Resort spokesperson was unable to give any official dates of when Mickey’s Soundsational Parade will begin—or when Celebrate: A Street Parade will leave. I guess Disneyland fans can also take comfort in knowing that Walt Disney World appears to be keeping their own version of Celebrate: A Street Party for now.

Over in Disney California Adventure park, a new show is in the works to replace High School Musical 3: Senior Year – Right Here! Right Now! The Disney Parks Blog says the show has yet to be named, but a posting on the Disney Auditions Web site listed openings for two shows, Disney Channel Rocks!, described as “a contemporary rock concert-style show celebrating the great music of the Disney Channel,” and Disney Dance Crew, described as “a hip, contemporary dance show in the mold of ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.”

The new concert show is expected to debut at Disney California Adventure park and Florida’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday, October 22. High School Musical 3: Senior Year – Right Here! Right Now! will have its final performance at Disney California Adventure park on Sunday, October 17.

World of Color for Fall

The new park hours and entertainment schedule for Disney California Adventure shows that World of Color will continue nightly performances even after the summer crowds leave. Starting Tuesday, September 7, there will be a single performance at 8:15 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and two performances (9 and 10:15) Fridays through Sundays.

As has become the norm when discussing the World of Color, the flow of official information within Disney itself seems to be inconsistent. The 8:15 p.m. show was added to the online entertainment calendar at the Disneyland Web site on Tuesday, but the park hours calendar still showed the park closing at the usual 6:00 p.m. That was corrected the next day, but the Disney Dine Line could not say of the World of Color dining packages would be offered after September 6. By Friday, the Dine Line was accepting reservations for World of Color packages at the Wine Country Trattoria through September 23, but still could not book reservations at Ariel’s Grotto for dates beyond September 6. A cast member said all details should be finalized this week. We’ve heard nothing official about the future of the World of Color picnic option, but there’s absolutely not reason to think that Disney would discontinue this offering, especially once the show drops from three nightly performances to just one.

Reader disneylandkitty alerted us to a new World of Color contest, presented by Coca-Cola and Ralphs (a Southern California brand of the Kroger grocery stores). The Color Palette Sweepstakes is open to Southern California residents only, and offers prizes ranging from a free downloadable World of Color computer wallpaper image to Southern California Select Annual Passports. You can also win one-day park hopper tickets or Ralphs Grocery Store gift certificates, and 400 winners will each receive four tickets to a private party and reserved viewing of World of Color on September 10, 2010. You can enter once a day through August 5, 2010 (link).

Disney also wrapped up the World of Color Road Show this weekend with an installation at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles. The show was projected onto the exterior of the building Thursday and Friday night, and repeated online Saturday and Sunday. If you didn’t catch it online, we have video from the production.

Disney clarifies Halloween Party details

I wrote in last week’s Disneyland Resort Update about the confusing information Disney has published about this year’s Halloween Party, with different pages of the official Disneyland site providing different—and in some cases contradictory—information about such basic issues about when the event tickets are valid and what type of entertainment will be offered.

MousePlanet asked Disney to clarify some of these issues and answer questions posed by readers. Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Betsy Sanchez responded to our request, and confirmed that the event information posted in last week’s Update was correct. To recap:

Admission: Guests who have:

• Purchased a Halloween Party ticket can enter Disneyland before the official start of the party:
  • On Tuesdays when the party starts at 6:00 p.m., valid party ticketholders can enter at 3:00 p.m.
  • On Fridays and Halloween when the party starts at 7:00 p.m., valid party ticketholders can enter at 4:00 p.m.
• Not purchased a Halloween Party ticket will not be allowed to remain in the park after it officially closes to the public.

Costumes for the Party: Adults with valid event tickets may enter Disneyland in costume

• On Tuesdays, at 3:00 p.m.
• On Fridays and Halloween, at 4:00 p.m.

If you’re spending the day at Disneyland and also hold a valid ticket to that night’s event, you’ll have to wait until 3:00 or 4:00 to don your costume.

Entertainment: Halloween Screams fireworks are “exclusive” to Mickey’s Halloween Party, and Disney will only present the show on event nights. On Saturday and Sunday nights (except on Halloween night, when there is a Halloween Party event), Disneyland will present the Remember… Dreams Come True fireworks show.

Disneyland Hotel courtyard construction

If you’re mourning the upcoming demolition of the waterfalls in the Disneyland Hotel courtyard, you have two more weeks to visit them one last time before the water is turned off on Saturday, August 14. After reading our Farewell Photo Tour last Friday, MousePlanet reader Mitch Korsmoe shared these two beautiful night photos of the waterfall area.

The Lost Bar and Croc’s Bits ‘n’ Bites closed their windows for the last time Sunday night, and workers will spend the next two weeks removing equipment from the restaurants, we as well as emptying the Game Arcade and removing the Jungle Cruise radio control boats. Construction walls will go up around the entire construction site the morning of August 16.

Though the hotel’s fitness center will not be demolished during this refurbishment project, the construction will render the facility inaccessible at times. During these times, the fitness center equipment will be relocated to one of the hotel meeting rooms; the front desk will give you the most recent information as you check in.

The Orange County Register wrote about the closure of the waterfalls last Friday (link), and the efforts of some fans to ask Disney to reconsider the decision to replace the area with a grass lawn.

Ticket prices to go up

Disneyland regulars know that the annual ticket price increase was announced the first weekend of August for the past several years, but it seems the Resort broke with tradition and will announce the new pricing at the same time Walt Disney World releases their new rates this week. We’ve been told that the new rates will go into effect on Thursday, August 5, and that details will likely be released sometime on Tuesday.

A Walt Disney Travel Company cast member asked us (unofficially) to tell our readers that they won’t have any specifics until the new rates are released on the Disney World and Disneyland Web sites. It seems their offices received quite a few calls about the pending price increase after it was mentioned in this column last Monday, but they have no additional information to share. We’ll post the new rate structure as soon as we receive the information—check this article later this week for any updates.

This delay gives you an extra few days to purchase tickets for any upcoming trips at the lower rates. Most regular Park Hopper tickets purchased via Disneyland.com are valid now through January 3, 2011, but be sure to double check for yourself before you buy. This is also a good time to purchase a new Annual Passport or AP gift voucher at the lower rates, or to renew your existing AP if your pass expires in the next 30 days. Again, visit the Disneyland Web site for specific details and exclusions before you purchase.

Resort Construction Update

Star Tours closed last week for refurbishment and addition of elements for Star Tours 2.0. The ride is expected to “relaunch” in May 2011 (we’re hearing May 20), and a cast member who looked inside the attraction queue on Thursday said that the C-3P0 and R2-D2 figures had already been removed, along with the oversize Starspeeder model. Over in Fantasyland, it’s very hard to tell if any work has been done to the Alice in Wonderland attraction following the safety-related closure David Koenig wrote about last week, because the entire site is surrounded by construction scaffolding and a double layer of mesh tarps.

In DCA, construction walls have gone up around Burger Invasion, and work to dismantle the former restaurant’s exterior should begin shortly. The berm wall around Cars Land just keeps growing, and tarps covering the west side now effectively block the view of the Radiator Springs Racers construction site from the Fun Wheel. Some exterior walls of the front of the Little Mermaid building have been insulated, which means the facing material can’t be far behind. If you glance over the construction wall, you can see that the wall which will house the entrance mural has been installed.

…The Tower of Terror Fastpass machines reopened in Disney California Adventure last Friday, as did the attraction’s front entrance gate. The area was closed due to construction of the connector between Bug’s Land and Tower of Terror, but the machines reopened ahead of schedule.

…Ted Bradpiece from Two Bears Travel alerted us that Disney released a block of staterooms for the previously sold out  2-night West Coast “Cruise to Nowhere” on board the Disney Wonder, January 21-23, 2011. Nearly 70 MousePlanet readers, community leaders and staff members are booked on this sailing—come join us! …MousePlanet reader JerrodDRagon posted a backstage photo of the new costumes for California Screamin’ cast members (link). The costumes are similar but more brightly colored than the version worn by Toy Story Midway mania operators; reader OlegC described the look as “Seaside Victorian.”

…Disneyland’s Newsstand is the latest merchandise location to offer bottled beverages for sale. The location offers Coca-Cola soft drinks and Monster energy drinks at $3 to $4 each. The good news is that, unlike most Outdoor Vending locations, Annual Passholder and Cast Member discounts apply if your total is $10 or more.

Expect unusually large attendance levels October 14-17 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school’s participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
• Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland – October 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, 31. Advance-purchase tickets are on sale now for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders via the AP section of Disneyland.com; Disney Visa Card holders and Disney Vacation Club members can also purchase tickets by phone by calling 714-781-4000. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 16 via Disneyland.com.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $72/$62 One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $97/$87	No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.
Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $151/$131	AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($149/$129) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $1 per ticket net savings isn’t enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you’ll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011.
Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $204/$174	3-Day Summer Fun Pass ($108) and 3-Day Summer Fun PLUS Pass ($129) – The 2010 3-Day Summer Fun Pass is $108, $9 more expensive than the 2009 version, and offers Southern California residents (ZIP Codes 90000–93599) and Northern Baja California residents (ZIP Codes 21000–22999) three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure within a 45 day period. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. Unlike the 2009 offer, this base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $21 per person, you can upgrade the Summer Fun Pass to a Summer Fun PLUS Pass, a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. Both tickets have a 45-day “fuse,” (instead of the usual 13- or 30-day limit), giving you more time to plan your return visits, but have more block out dates than last year: July 2-4 and August 22-23. The first use of the pass must be between June 11 and August 29, 2010. The Summer Pass can be purchased at www.disneyland.com, the Disneyland Resort box office, Disney Stores, Disneyland Resort Hotels, and a variety of southern California supermarkets and retail chains, including Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Bros., Food 4 Less, Gelson’s and Deardens. Disney states that “resident ID is required,” but MousePlanet readers who purchased these tickets from off-property retailers last year consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether this will happen to you is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but we feel it would be irresponsible for us to not at least make our readers aware of the “official” policy, regardless of what the park’s actual practice may be. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($184/$154) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value) AOCVCB 3-Day Bonus Ticket ($179/$149) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $5 off the advance purchase price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $4 per ticket net savings isn’t enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you’ll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $229/$199	Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2010 Southern California CityPass $269/$229	2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229)– This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco!

Disneyland Resort Two More Days & Nights Free offer –This latest deal offers a five-night, five-day Disneyland Resort vacation package for the price of a three-night, three-day package, giving you two “free” hotel nights and two additional days of theme park admission. Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50% at either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
