What Will You Celebrate in 2009? | Coming soon: monthly-payment annual passports | Would you turn your annual passport into a charge card? | This and That
What Will You Celebrate in 2009?
For many Disney watchers, last week’s big New York announcement by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo was a big bust. Instead of hearing about new rides, resorts or cruise ships, the assembled media learned that American families plan vacations around special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and reunions. In response to this “newly identified family-travel trend,” the Disney company announced the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts marketing theme for 2009: “What Will You Celebrate?” The headline of this promotion is the offer of free admission to any one of the Disney theme parks on your birthday in 2009.
The free birthday admission offer has surprisingly few restrictions. Everyone age 3 and older who provides valid proof of their date of birth will receive a one-day, one-park ticket when they visit a domestic Disney theme park on their birthday. There are no residency restrictions. Visitors are encouraged—but not required—to register their date of birth on a special Disney Web site before their trip, but celebrants can also just show their eligible identification at the ticket booths on their birthday to claim their ticket. The Birthday Ticket can be upgraded to a park-hopper, multi-day ticket or even annual passport.
Annual passholders are not left out of the celebration. Passholders (and anyone who already holds valid admission, such as a multi-day ticket purchased as part of a travel package) can choose from three other benefits:
- A “birthday fun card” equal to the price of the admission ticket you would otherwise receive, that is valid only on the day of your birthday. This fun card cannot be used for food, but it can be used for merchandise, guided tours, PhotoPass products, spa and salon services and more.
- A “birthday fastpass.” This benefit provides four FastPass tickets, valid for up to 6 people, at selected attractions.
- A one-day, one-park admission ticket valid for your use anytime in the year before your next birthday. This ticket can be used on a day (including your birthday) that your Annual Passport is normally blocked out, or after your existing pass expires. This ticket is not transferable, and can not be upgraded.
“What Will You Celebrate” involves more than the free birthday admission offer. Here are some of the other elements to the promotion and/or new additions to the resort:
What Will You Celebrate National Tour. Colorful vehicles—a party on wheels—roll out the fun from town squares to Times Square, featuring thousands of free Mickey Mouse balloons, a chance to win a “celebration vacation” to a Disney park and the opportunity to register for a special birthday celebration surprise. Disney characters and ambassadors also go on-air with fun celebration moments. Tour dates and locations are as follows:

Disney’s What Will You Celebrate? Tour Sweepstakes. Even if you can’t attend one of the National Tour stops, you can participate in the online sweepstakes (link). You can enter once per day to win instant-win prizes, including an HP TouchSmart PC IQ504t Series computer, HP HDX16 Laptop, 3.5″ HP Digital Photo or a Limited Edition Disney Parks Celebrations Pin, and to register to win one of 10 sweepstakes prizes, a four day/ three night vacation package for four people to your choice of either the Walt Disney World Resort or the Disneyland Resort. Official rules and odds are available at the contest Web site (link).
New “Celebration Street Party.” A Disneyland Resort spokesperson described this new entertainment offering as “an all new, highly festive celebration that will give our guests the opportunity to celebrate their special occasion with Disney Characters and performers in a very unique setting. It will be a brand new “experience” that guests will never forget.” Walt Disney World will present their own version of this Street Party during their promotion.
Celebration Roundup and Barbecue at Big Thunder Ranch. Details are not yet available from Disney, but it sounds like Disneyland will finally reopen the Big Thunder Ranch barbecue restaurant to serve as a venue for a daily celebration picnic. Rumors suggest this will be a meal version of the My Disneyland Birthday Party event. There will be anywhere from 1 to 3 seatings per day, depending on projected attendance, and advance Priority Seating reservations will be recommended.
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. The Disneyland version of Walt Disney World’s popular princess makeover salon will open in Fantasyland sometime in Spring 2009. [Editor Note: A Disneyland Resort spokesperson wrote to clarify this item, and tells us that the the Boutique will be located in the space currently occupied by the “Once Upon A Princess” shop, formerly the Tinker Bell Toy Shop.}
New Sweetheart Dinner package at full-service restaurants. Tailored toward couples celebrating engagements, honeymoons and anniversaries, a three-course, prix fixe Sweetheart Dinner for Two will be offered at Napa Rose, Steakhouse 55, Yamabuki and Blue Bayou. Couples will receive a souvenir toasting glass to commemorate their celebration.
Celebration room decor packages and in-room amenities. Disneyland’s vacation planning department is finalizing a new package of in-room decor options, gift baskets and in-room amenities. Additional details will be available shortly.
Return of the customized birthday cakes at full-service restaurants. This offering was popular with some visitors, but Disneyland discontinued the service several years ago. A Disneyland Resort spokesperson says “this is something completely different from any previous offerings. Our Disney Chef’s have cooked up several different kinds of cakes and pastries that will be offered as part of “What Will You Celebrate” in 2009. Guests will be able to use Disney’s new celebration planning tools to plan celebrations large and small, customizing and personalizing each experience and tending to all the details, from a special cake to an elaborate one-of-a-kind celebration that only Disney can create.” Cakes require at least 48 hours advance notice, and online ordering will be available. Choices include a custom cake (6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch and quarter sheet), an 8-inch Mickey Mouse cake or a themed cake with enhanced inscription and edible decorations (8-inch, 10-inch and quarter sheet).
Tell us what you think: Are you disapointed in what 2009 holds for the Disney theme parks, or are you already planning a trip to take advantage of the free birthday admission offer? Reader reaction will be published in an upcoming Mailbag article.
Coming soon: monthly-payment annual passports
While many Disney fans were chatting about the official announcement of the 2009 “What Will You Celebrate” marketing campaign, the Disneyland Resort quietly announced another new program to cast members. Starting this fall, Disneyland Resort passholders will be offered the opportunity to finance their Annual Passports over 12 months.
Passholders will make a deposit equal to the cost of a one-day, one-park ticket, then pay the balance over 12 months. Payments will be automatically charged to a credit card placed on file at the time the passport is purchased. This option will be available to new passholders starting November 4, 2008; and for renewals on January 1, 2009. The program will be offered only to residents of Southern California, and is available for all four types of annual passport.
There’s more good news for new passholders who purchase their pass on their birthday—not only can the Birthday Ticket offered in the What Will You Celebrate promotion be upgraded to an annual passport, but it will serve as the down payment you would otherwise need to make if you choose to finance your pass. If you time it right, you can buy a new Premium Annual Passport on your birthday, use the Birthday Ticket as your down payment, and pay less than $30 a month for your Passport.
Would you turn your annual passport into a charge card?
Most visitors who stay at Disney-owned hotels can use their room key as a charge card, and can charge meals and merchandise to their master bill. Two MousePlanet readers have reported that the Disneyland Resort sent them a survey asking questions about making the same benefits available to annual passholders. The survey presents the possibility of linking an annual passport to your debit or credit card, and suggests that passholders would be able to set an optional daily spending limit for each member of the family.
If you didn’t get a invitation to take the survey, here’s your chance to share your thoughts about this offer. Would you link your AP to your credit or debit card? Do you think it would change your spending habits, and are you concerned about security?

This and That
…MousePlanet reader Sean Rouse spotted a great deal at his local Costco store. Costco members can receive a $50 Disneyland gift card when they purchase a Deluxe Disneyland Resort annual passport for $269 at a participating Costco location. The offer should be available at all Costco stores that currently sell Disneyland admission, but the vouchers may not have arrived in all locations yet. Sean spotted the tickets at the Burbank and Fountain Valley Costco stores; we’ve confirmed that the Hawthorne and Long Beach stores do not yet have them. The ticket will also be available through the Costco Web site in the near future.
There are no residency restrictions on this ticket, and it can be upgraded to a Deluxe with parking or Premium passport. Better still, the $50 gift card can be applied towards the cost of the upgrades, which nearly pays for the $59 parking option or drops the net cost of a Premium Annual Passport to just $339.
The former McDonald’s chuck wagon has apparently moved on. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…Disney gave no indication about the fate of the Conestoga Wagon when the former McDonald’s French fry cart closed earlier this month, but there were some rumors that the location would be converted to another food service use—possibly a funnel cake stand. The wagon has now been removed entirely, and a construction wall surrounds what remains of the foundation and utility connections.
…Our second annual MousePlanet night at Mickey’s Trick or Treat Party is Friday, October 3. This is one of the annual Passholder discount nights, and tickets are now on sale through the Disneyland Web site (link). Be sure to stop by the dry fountain just outside the Tower of Terror at 9:00 p.m. to receive your “treat” from MousePlanet.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort this fall should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. This week’s changes include a brief closure of the Horse Drawn Streetcars starting Tuesday. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
This information is pulled from many sources but much thanks go to MouseSavers.com for providing the bulk of the information. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).

As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
