Welcome to the “off season”
This week’s update will be shorter than usual, as most of the major changes are getting underway as you read this. Today kicks off a short two-week “off-season” before Disneyland Park launches its HalloweenTime promotion on Friday, September 17, when the transformation from “summer” to “fall” happens in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, Disney California Adventure park is launching the next major phase of its expansion plan, with even more of the park being handed over to construction crews. Pizza Oom Mow Mow, S.S. Rustworthy, Reboundo Beach, Maliboomer, Bountiful Valley Farmer’s Market, Farmer’s Market Fruit Cart, Sam Andreas Shakes, and P.T. Flea Market all served their last guests on Labor Day Monday. Of these, only Pizza Oom Mow Mow returns in any form once the construction walls are gone; the rest are slated to be demolished in the work that begins today. Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular begins a month-long hiatus this week, and the entrance of DCA is about to change forever as the sun icon is removed. The next few months are going to prove very interesting.
Enter ElecTRONica
Disneyland has officially announced ElecTRONica, a new nighttime promotion at DCA to promote the pending release of the movie Tron: Legacy, a long-awaited sequel to the popular 1982 Disney science fiction movie that featured Jeff Bridges in a world of computer bits. Like this summer’s Glow Fest promotion, ElecTRONica will be staged in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot and will feature music, dancing, outdoor bars and food service, and lots and lots of neon. Unlike Glow Fest, there seems to be a lot less grumbling about this new event, and the reaction to the official announcement on the Disney Parks Blog is overwhelmingly positive.

ElecTRONica begins Friday, October 8, though an earlier version of the Disney announcement provided a start date of September 24, just a week after the start of the HalloweenTime promotion. The start date was probably impacted by the Red Car Line construction in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, work that has blocked access to the Hyperion Theater and forced a month-long hiatus of Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular. ElecTRONica is scheduled to run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this fall, though the Disney announcement also says ElecTRONica will be presented nightly during the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The highlights are said to be “an authentic re-creation of Flynn’s Arcade,” likely the same set-up presented at the San Diego Comic-Con International, and the TRON: Evolution video game area. The Disney Parks Blog doesn’t mention the Tron: Legacy trailer we’ve been told will play after dark in the Muppet*Vision theater, nor has Disney indicated if it plans to re-create the End of the Line club, also presented at Comic-Con.

Several people have asked why Disney is not staging ElecTRONica inside Disneyland, where a Tron-themed scene was included in the Peoplemover attraction from 1982 to 1995, and a half-used arcade seems tailor-made. The one-word answer could be “alcohol”—hosting ElecTRONica at DCA allows Disney to set up Tron-themed bars that would never be allowed inside a Magic Kingdom park—but “balance” is probably another factor. Had Mickey’s Trick or Treat party remained at DCA this year, it’s likely planners would have found room inside Disneyland for ElecTRONica. But with the Halloween event forcing the early closure of Disneyland two (and once, three) nights a week during October, it makes sense to host the other major nighttime production in the other theme park.
Tron: Legacy opens in theaters on December 17, and Disney has given no indication of when ElecTRONica might end. If the promotion is as popular as the much-maligned but well-attended Glow Fest, we might see a TRON New Year.
The “Ultimate Experience” for HalloweenTime
Disney is now selling an “Ultimate Experience” package for HalloweenTime. The package combines the Happiest Haunts Tour and admission to Mickey’s Halloween Party for $99 per person, a discount over purchasing the tour and party tickets separately.
The Ultimate Experience starts with the guided Happiest Haunts tour, usually $64 per person. At the end of the guided tour, guests can stay for Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland. The tour is approximately 3 hours long and starts at 5:00 or 5:05. Those taking the tour on nights when the party starts at 6 will have about 2 hours less party time as a result of the tour; those attending on nights where the party starts at 7 lose about an hour.
The tour is described as suitable for all ages, though most of the rides included in the tour have a 40-inch height requirement. There are no child or other discounts offered. Costumes are not allowed on the tour, so take that into consideration if you’d planned to dress up. A Disney spokesman told MousePlanet that reserved seating for the Halloween Screams fireworks show is not included with the tour (though, of course, those with Mickey’s Halloween Party tickets can see the fireworks as part of the party).
If you’re interested in this “Ultimate Experience” package but have already purchased tickets to Mickey’s Halloween Party, you must still book this tour at full price, and then Disney will issue a refund for your party tickets.
There is a maximum of 20 people per tour group (2 tours a night), and tickets go on sale 30 days in advance. The Ultimate Experience is offered October 1, 5, 8, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, and 31. Call 714-781-4400 for more information or to make a reservation.
Here comes Duffy—again
Disneyland’s merchandise department released its September newsletter detailing product releases, artist signings and such for the coming month (you can download the document from our MousePad discussion board).
The only thing that really caught my attention here is the “Duffy the Disney Bear” Annual Passholder event at Disneyland on Sunday, September 19 (with a similar event in Walt Disney World on the 18th). The Disney Bear was featured in the domestic Disney theme parks way back in 2002 when Once Upon a Toy opened at Walt Disney World, and was offered at Disneyland around the same time. Duffy didn’t have a name back then (or if he did, it wasn’t a major part of his marketing), and there just wasn’t a lot of buzz about him. Essentially the Disney Bear was a stuffed bear with a Mickey-shaped outline on his face. He came in a few sizes and colors, and each bear was sold with a storybook explaining how Mickey had hugged the bear so tight he transferred his iconic markings to the stuffed critter’s face. A Duffy walk-around character made a short-lived appearance in 2004, but the character never really took off and the Disney Bear merchandise was quietly moved to the back of the stores.

Given his history, I was surprised to come across a large Disney Bear display at Tokyo Disneyland a few years later. At that time it seemed that Japanese park guests were making a much bigger deal of the Disney Bear, but I had no idea how big Duffy had gotten over there until I started noticing Japanese visitors to the U.S. theme parks wearing Duffy T-shirts and lanyards, and dangling Duffy key chains from every zipper pull. Duffy has acquired Beanie Baby status in Japan (the early years, when people camped out overnight in front of stores to purchase their precious allocation of 2-per-person), and it looks like Disney is going to try to spread the mania back to the United States with this re launch of “the bear-y newest member of the Disney Character Family.”
5th annual Disneyland Half Marathon sets records
More than 14,000 people participated in the 5th annual Disneyland Half Marathon this weekend, a record number of participants for the West Coast edition of Disney’s popular endurance race series. The overall winner of the race was Paul Ngeny, 31, of Auburn, California, who ran the 13.1-mile course in 1:07:24, setting a new record for the event. The women’s division was won by Rachel Booth, 29, of Mountain View, California, who also set a new course record with her time of 1:15:19, more than four minutes faster than the previous record. Disney reported that Scott Parson, 51 of San Jose, California (00:56:45), and Sandi Rush, 49, of Oceanside, California (1:17:06), were the winners of the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions.
Several MousePlanet readers also set personal records this weekend, and we congratulate everyone who participated in the race. Though some participants experienced some challenges with the organization of the half-marathon weekend events (race officials ran out of 5K medals on Saturday and Coast-to-Coast medals on Sunday; the half-marathon start was more disorganized than in prior years), all of the Team MousePlanet participants completed the course. If you’d like to join them for the 2011 race, the 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is scheduled for Sept. 2–4, 2011, and registration is scheduled to open January 3, 2011.
On Friday, Disney announced that former Olympian and noted marathon coach Jeff Galloway has been named the official training consultant to Disney’s series of endurance events. Galloway is well known as an author, coach, race director and columnist for Runner’s World magazine. For the Disney endurance races, now re-branded “runDisney,” Galloway will provide training tips and videos. To support the new brand, Disney launched a new runDisney Web site (link), and a new Facebook page (link).
This and That…
…Now that Bountiful Valley Farmer’s Market has closed, Award Weiners in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot is now your source for corn dogs while at Disney’s California Adventure. The corn dogs are said to be hand-dipped and fried at the restaurant, just as they are at Disneyland’s Little Red Wagon. In the spirit of research we tested the DCA corn dogs over the weekend and found them to be pretty comparable to the version currently served in Disneyland (last year, the OC Weekly reported (link) that Disneyland had changed to a smaller, beef-and-chicken blend dog for both hot dog and corn dog preparations). The Award Weiners dogs come with your choice of apple slices or potato chips.
…There has been no resolution in the situation of Imane Boudlal, the Storytellers Cafe hostess who has filed a discrimination complaint against Disney over a company dress code policy that prohibits cast members from wearing a traditional hijab head scarf while working in many jobs at Disneyland. After rejecting two proposed Disney-designed head coverings and refusing shifts in off-stage roles where she could wear her own hijab, Boudlal was removed from the schedule at Storytellers Cafe until a resolution could be reached. A planned demonstration against the Disneyland Resort by community members was called off last week because Imane Boudlal and her lawyers are now apparently in dialogue with Disney. A spokesman from Unite HERE Local 11, the union that represents Boudlal, did not respond to a request for comment on the situation.

- Lost Bar, Croc’s Bits ‘n’ Bites, Hook’s Pointe and the Wine Cellar – closed. These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project set to begin August 14. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people AND the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container or a cardboard placard that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco! |

Hotel/Travel Packages
Fall discount offers – Disneyland has extended two discount offers for the three Disneyland Resort Hotels, with extra room-only discounts for travelers who book their trips before the end of September.
If you need a room and theme park tickets, Disneyland is offering a discount of up to $300 on a four-day, four-night vacation package, which includes 4-day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper bonus tickets and four nights at a Disneyland Resort hotel. This package also includes admission to one Magic Morning at Disneyland (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness at Disneyland (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday), one Walt Disney Travel Company pin and lanyard per person, preferred seating to select shows in Disney’s California Adventure Park (where available; note that Aladdin will be on hiatus for much of the fall), and a Disney Character Call from Mickey, Minnie, or Goofy (offered to guests who book online).The offer is valid for arrivals from October 1 through December 16. Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
