This is HalloweenTime
HalloweenTime began this weekend at the Disneyland Resort, a week earlier than the 2009 promotion. At Disneyland, HalloweenTime brings the return of Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. The popular Halloween Screams fireworks show will be presented this year only during the extra-ticket Mickey’s Halloween Party events every Tuesday and Friday in October. Instead, Disneyland will present the Remember… Dreams Come True fireworks show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in September, and on Saturday and Sunday nights in October. Disneyland is decorated for Halloween, most noticeably on and around Main Street, but most areas of the park feature at least one holiday display. The Resort’s food and beverage team has also pulled together a large list of holiday treats.
Haunted Mansion Holiday

After Jack Skellington decorates the Haunted Mansion each year, fans of the ride always check to see how large the man-eating wreath has grown, and to see the newest gingerbread house in the ballroom. This year there was a surprise between those two scenes, as Madame Leota left her usual place in the crystal ball on the séance room table and now floats in a large glass drop ornament above the table. Smaller red and green ornaments appear to float behind her. There are some additional enhancements in the ride, mostly new lighting effects and improved audio in the stretching room, as well as new projections on the moon in the loading room display.

Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy
The Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy overlay is back for a second year, and the gift kiosk at the attraction exit offers shirts with the Halloween logo. There are no noticeable changes to the attraction itself, though that didn’t discourage fans from snapping up Fastpass tickets and filling the standby lines.
HalloweenTime treats
We have a list (courtesy of a friendly cast member) of all of the holiday treats that will be offered at the Disneyland Resort this HalloweenTime, with the locations where each item can be found. The list mentions the Gift with Purchase opportunity that will start September 26 at French Market, Café Orleans, though neither location had any additional information this weekend. Missing from this list is the Mickey Ghost popcorn bucket offered at most popcorn carts inside Disneyland. The bucket sells for $9.50 (including tax) and comes filled with popcorn. The little ghosts were flying out of the popcorn carts this weekend, and were reportedly selling faster than workers backstage could assemble them.

The Happiest Haunts tour also returned this weekend, and contributing writer Annemarie Moody will share her review of this year’s tour later this week.

As expected, HalloweenTime is strictly a Disneyland event this year, and there is virtually no Halloween presence in Disney California Adventure park, though the Happiest Haunts tour does include a ride on the Tower of Terror attraction.
Duffy takes DCA
Disney’s new buzz word is Duffy, and the plush bear is about to make his grand reappearance in the United States. Duffy is Disney’s answer to Build-a-Bear, but merchandise managers would very much like you to please forget that you’ve actually seen him before. The Disney Bear (as he was called then) was first offered at the domestic Disney theme parks in 2002, and a walk-around Disney Bear character appeared at meet-and-greets at Walt Disney World’s Once Upon a Toy store in 2004. The Disney Bear was a furry flop in the states, but has achieved rock star status at the Tokyo Disney Resort, where collectors routinely wait in hours-long lines to purchase new versions of the bear (known there as “Duffy”) and his costumes. Disney’s apparently decided to give Duffy another try, and will launch a massive merchandise campaign around the critter starting October 14th. Disney parks annual passholders got a preview of Duffy-mania during exclusive presentations at Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resorts this weekend.

Some of Duffy’s costumes are said to represent the countries he’s visited on his travels with Mickey – or the countries of Epcot’s World Showcase. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Duffy will be sold in several sizes and formats. The 17″ bear runs about $25, and can be dressed in a selection of costumes that run about $15 apiece. At the Disneyland Resort presentation it was said that some of Duffy’s costumes would represent the countries he visited with Mickey on his journeys, but we’ve heard that the Florida presentations described the costumes as matching the countries of Epcot’s World Showcase, as did a poster on display at the California presentation. Some collectors have noted that the U.S. costumes do not have Duffy’s “birthmark” on the seat of the pants, a design element seen on the Duffy costumes sold in Japan.
Cast members were not sure if costumes would be sold for the 24″ Duffy. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Duffy will also be sold as a 24″ bear (cast members were not certain if there would be costumes available for that size), and as smaller wristlet bears (with a zipper in the back so it can act as a small purse) and key chain bears, the type commonly clipped to purses and backpacks. A 12″ pre-dressed bear will be offered for holidays and special occasions. New Duffy-shaped Vinylmation figures will be added later this year, creating instant synergy with another hot Disney collectible line.
No need to visit Build-a-Bear to dress Duffy, a variety of costumes will be offered for sale. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

At the Disneyland Resort, Duffy merchandise will be offered at Treasures in Paradise in DCA, adjacent to the new Duffy meet-and-greet location. When you meet Duffy you’ll receive a sticker that reads something like “I just hugged Duffy the Disney bear,” a nice bit of in-park marketing. Even non-collectors will have a hard time avoiding the Duffy Invasion. Duffy photo spots will be built around the Disneyland Resort, giving Duffy owners the opportunity to photograph their bear in a unique setting. Duffy popcorn buckets, dessert dishes, kids menus and crispy rice treats will be offered throughout the Resort, as will Duffy balloons. Later this year, Duffy will launch his own Facebook page and Twitter account.
You’ll have several options to dine with Duffy, including popcorn buckets, dessert dishes and kids menus. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
At the conclusion of Sunday’s presentations, Disneyland Resort annual passholders were offered the opportunity to purchase a Duffy bear and his now-trademark sailor costume nearly a month before the official product release. About half of the passholders in the room joined the line to buy their very own Disney bear, so clearly Disney’s Duffy hype has been effective among one group of guests. Now we wait to see if the third coming of Duffy is just a flash in the pan, or the furry face of the future.
World of ElecTRONica
Last week we heard about a new “encore” for World of Color that will begin October 8th when ElecTRONica starts, and the same night YouTube user dlranswers uploaded a video clip they said was filmed from Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel on September 10. The short video shows the TRON logo projected onto the World of Color screens.
The start of the ElecTRONica promotion is nearly three weeks away, but the infrastructure for the nightly dance party is clearly visible from the moment you enter DCA. A large stage and screen have already been installed in the Sun Plaza, and metal lighting trusses span Hollywood Blvd. The Sorcerer Mickey fountain in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot has been temporarily replaced with a stage for the show.

Resort construction update
The Maliboomer is partially surrounded by scaffolding, and a crane has been brought in to assist with the removal of the now-closed attraction. Paradise Pier will soon have a new skyline to the south when the Maliboomer is finally removed. The Pacific Wharf is also getting a new horizon, courtesy of the Cadillac Range that will partially surround Cars Land.

Demolition has begun on those buildings of the Disneyland Hotel courtyard that stood on the future site of the expanded pool area. MousePlanet reader Melissa Mayorgas sent in photos taken from her 5th floor room in the Dreams/Adventure Tower, and says “The construction destruction of the Wonder Tower waterfalls made my eyes fill with tears. I’m so glad we were able to say a proper goodbye last month.”

…Disneyland Resort has extended the extra merchandise discounts for Annual Passholders once again, this time through January 10, 2011. This offer gives a 10% merchandise discount to So Cal, So Cal Select and Deluxe Annual Passholders, and increases the Premium and Premiere Annual Passholder discount to 20%. …The Orange County Register reported last week that the Anaheim city council voted last week to increase the city’s hotel tax from 15% (already the highest in Orange County) to 17% effective November 1, 2010. The added funds will be used to promote convention business and fund Resort-area transportation projects.

…Disneyland released concept art and a bit more information about Mickey’s Halloween Party last week via the Disney Parks Blog. A new “cavalcade” called “Mickey’s Costume Party” will be performed twice each night, before and after the Halloween Screams fireworks. The blog describes two floats – a “Haunted Castle Float decorated by Mickey with bats, ghosts, spider webs, pumpkins and skulls,” and a Costume Shop Float that “celebrates the fun of dressing up for Halloween.” Tickets for the event are still available at Disneyland.com/halloween.
…If you’d like to dine at Remy, the adults-only restaurant on board the Disney Dream when it joins the Disney Cruise Line next year, budget $75 per person (plus alcohol). Pricing for the exclusive restaurant was finalized and communicated to Disney cast members last week. The Wine Room has been incorporated into the main Remy’s dining room, bringing the total capacity to 96 seats. The Chef’s Table, which seats up to another 16 people, can be booked for private dining. The restaurant has a more formal dress code than Palo, as expected. Men are required to wear a sports, suit or tuxedo jacket with dress pants and dress shoes, but a tie is optional. Women are expected to wear a cocktail or other nice dress dress or a dressy pant or skirt with a nice blouse.
Unite Here tried to send a message into Disneyland by distributing “Disney is Unfaithful” balloons to park goers, but at least one recipient was able to alter the text to their liking. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…Members of Unite Here Local 11, a union embroiled in a long-standing dispute with the Disneyland Resort, staged a small demonstration Saturday and distributed balloons printed with the group’s “Disney is Unfaithful” slogan to visitors walking through Downtown Disney.

- Sixth annual Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 2–4. Registration for the 2011 event is scheduled to open Jan. 3, 2011.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people AND the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
