C-3PO takes charge at Star Tours
In a posting on the Disney Parks Blog last week, Tom Fitzgerald, Executive VP & Senior Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, revealed additional details about exactly who will be piloting the Star Tours Starspeeder 1000 when the ride returns in 2011 (link).
“Our initial plans were for our flight to be piloted by AC-38 better known as ‘Ace,’ Fitzgerald said. “However, in discussions with George Lucas during the course of our production, we decided to take the story in a very different direction… by the time we actually take off, the droid sitting in the pilot’s seat will be none other than…C-3PO!”
Disney has previously released concept art of several new droids that will be part of Star Tours II, including “spokesbot” Aly San San and a character named Ace who was originally said to be the new pilot. Fitzgerald was mum on how C-3PO came to oust Ace from the cockpit, calling it “one of the biggest changes and surprises in the new show.”

The /Film (Slashfilm) Web site reported earlier this month that Michael Giacchino will score the music for the new ride, in addition to writing the scores for Cars 2 and several other major films (link). Giacchino is well-known by Disney/Pixar fans for his scores for The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Up.
A milestone for Cars Land
Last Friday, construction of Cars Land in Disney California Adventure (DCA) was suspended briefly to commemorate the “topping out” of the Cadillac Range, the mountain range that surrounds the Radiator Springs Racers in the Ornament Valley section of the new land. “Topping out” is a long-standing construction tradition that usually takes place when the highest beam is placed on a structure, after it is painted white and signed by the ironworkers and engineers. Attached to the beam are an evergreen tree—symbolizing growth and to bring luck—along with a national flag.
The beam placed on Friday will become part of the tailfin of a 1959 Cadillac, the third of six tailfins representing Cadillacs from 1957 to 1962, reaching a height of 125 feet. Following the ceremony, Jim Kearns and Kathy Mangum from Walt Disney Imagineering spoke briefly about the progress of Cars Land, noting that the land as whole is nearing the mid-point in its construction.

ElecTRONica meetup a hit
Fans of the Disney Parks Blog have been asking for larger meet-up get-togethers at Disneyland, and Disney complied by offering 1,500 readers and their guest the opportunity to experience ElecTRONica during a private, after-hours party at DCA Thursday night. Disney’s Heather Hust-Rivera told hopeful guests that there would not be a panel discussion at this event as there had been for past meet-ups, saying, “This event is mainly about experiencing ElecTRONica.” There were, however, some elements of the evening that made it more than just another night in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot.

Guests received a special Flynn’s Arcade token created especially for the event, and had the chance to see props, costumes and concept art from the film. The display included Black Guard and Rinzler helmets, and a costume not previously shown to the public. Two hundred attendees also had the opportunity to meet Tron: Legacy screenwriters Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Guests were encouraged to come in costume, and there were some highly detailed outfits on display. The Tron: Legacy 3-D preview and Flynn’s Arcade drew large crowds all night, and returning ElecTRONica guests noticed that new neon art been installed around the walls of Flynn’s. These new light fixtures re-create icons from video games like PacMan and Asteroids.

Three thousand people sounded like a lot to fit into the ElecTRONica space, but the crowds seemed manageable all night, and attendees seemed to be having a great time. Thanks to the MousePlanet readers who came to our impromptu “meet-up within a meet-up—we’ll do it again next time!

David Koenig reports
So How Many Maintenance Guys Does It Take to Open a Talking Mailbox?
The cartoony mailbox in Disneyland’s Toontown (which offers smart-alecky responses whenever someone tries to pull it open) had, for a while now, been missing the black screen that covered the speaker in its lid. This past weekend, maintenance was finally sent out to investigate—and was forced to call on reinforcements.
It seems that, without the screen, guests mistook it for a REAL mailbox, and maintenance found the receptacle stuffed silly with letters and postcards. So on Saturday, a crew of three showed up—one to try to cover the hole, one to pull envelopes and postcards out the back, and one evidently to supervise. All in full view of guests.
As a temporary fix, the cast member placed a cardboard box over the hole. By the next day, a replacement screen had been affixed and the opening in the back of the mailbox resealed. But, to guard against overly powerful penmen, the lid no longer opens quite as wide as it used to.
DCA construction update
Disney California Adventure has been a construction zone for well over a year now, but the the changes are starting to be much more visible from the exterior of the park. Half of the tile mosaic entrance mural has been removed, and the other half is being demolished now. If you look behind the giant ElecTRONica sign in the Sunshine Plaza, you’ll find that the sun icon that gave the area its name has been removed.
The west side of the mosaic is now gone, offering a new vista into DCA. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

It’s tough to tell if the weather has delayed work on the Little Mermaid building, but large sections of the exterior are covered in plastic sheeting and it looks as if some of the exposed insulation has been removed.

The edge of Paradise Pier is one massive construction site, with walls extending from the Little Mermaid building all the way around to the west parade gate. There has been little visible work to Muholland Madness, but the renovations on the former Pizza Omm Mow Mow building are so extensive, one wonders that there’s anything left standing. The building that once housed the P.T. Flea store in the farm area has been relocated to Paradise Pier, where it will be used as part of the new dining complex.

This and That…
…Guest and cast members were evacuated from the Paradise Pier Hotel around 3:30pm last Saturday due to a fire that stared in a pizza oven at the hotel. No one was hurt and the fire was contained within the area of the oven, causing minimal damage. Guests and cast members were allowed to re-enter the hotel about a half-hour later.
…A “Tron: Legacy” encore has been added to World of Color. The two-minute addition to the show features sights and sounds from the upcoming film and begins as a “takeover” of the show as the final title card is displayed. @MousePlanet Twitter follower @BCC4321 posted the following video to YouTube:

…Reservations are available for a Disney Family Thanksgiving Feast at the Disneyland Hotel. The buffet meal is $69 per adult (ages 10 and up) and $18.99 for ages 3-9. Four hours of parking at the Disneyland Hotel is included. The meal includes photo opportunities with Chip & Dale and other Disney characters. Call (714) 781-DINE (714-781-3463) to make your reservation.
… The Disneyland Resort has two purchase-with-purchase offers at participating stores. When you make a qualifying purchase of $25 or more, you can purchase a faux-croc print tote bag for $11.95. The bag is available in three different colors depending on where you shop—the World of Disney store has red totes, stores in Disney California Adventure have a navy version, and a grey tote is available at Disneyland shops.

If you spend over $50, you can purchase this year’s holiday woven throw blanket for $15.95. Both promotions are available at most Disney-owned shops at the Disneyland Resort, but if you make a qualifying purchase at a store that does not offer the promotion, you can bring your receipt to a store that does to purchase the promotional items.

… If you’ve attended a Disneyland merchandise event or radio broadcast day, you may have encountered Disney Artist and Historian Stacia Martin. Stacia is a popular interview subject when radio stations do live remote broadcasts from inside Disneyland, and she always seems to be sketching throughout these interviews, much to the delight of guests who unexpectedly receive one of her creations. Now some of Stacia’s original artwork is available for sale at the Disney Gallery. Prices start at $900, and one of the pieces has already sold. You can see the entire collection at the Disney Gallery Web site (link).

… Disney Cruise Line announced last week that a Broadway-style musical, Disney’s Believe, will be presented on the Disney Dream, Disney’s newest cruise ship, when it sets sail in 2011. Disney’s Believe follows a young girl and their father as they try to reconnect despite their busy lives, and features a cast of characters led by the Genie from Disney’s Aladdin, portrayed by John Massey (link). Disneyland regulars might recognize John, who worked in the Disneyland Resort Hotel gift shops for many years before moving into the theme parks to open Disneyland’s Innoventions attraction in 1998. The AOL Travel Web site has a sneak peek at the rehearsals for the new show, taking place now in Toronto (link).

… MousePlanet reader Ken Barnes tells us that the projection domes have returned to the World of Color show. The dome effects had been missing from the show since earlier this summer, and the domes themselves had taken on a noticeable brown color from exposure to the Paradise Bay water.

Fall
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 29 (in Nevada). This state holiday creates a three-day weekend, and many families head to the Disneyland Resort. There is no indication yet as to which, if any, celebrities will be on hand for the filming.

- Fall 2011 MouseAdventure – no details yet. Visit MouseAdventure.com to sign up for our newsletter.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by 10/1/2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: 12/24/10-1/1/11; 2/18/11-2/21/11; 4/17/11-4/23/11; and 7/1/11-7/4/11. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($186/$165) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Travel (link).
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. See the Rainforest Cafe Web site for details (link).
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
