DCA Food & Wine Festival to take 2-year hiatus
The Disneyland Resort announced last week that Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival has been cancelled for 2011 and 2012 (link). The announcement on the Disney Parks Blog said that the decision was made because of the extensive construction work currently underway at Disney California Adventure park, saying, “Expansion work over the next two years in some areas of the park present significant logistical challenges.” The event, which in the span of just five years grew from a weekends-only promotion into a six-week-long daily festival featuring hundreds of seminars, demonstrations, and activities, faced some of these “logistical challenges” in 2010 when construction in Paradise Pier and the new Cars Land areas forced event producers to find new venues for the some of the festival offerings. Much of the 2010 festival was pushed into the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, and a demonstration stage erected in the Sunshine Plaza was host to celebrity chefs such as Guy Fieri, Cat Cora and Robert Irvine, but the next phase of the park expansion project will see much of that area behind construction walls for months at a time.
Based on the comments posted on our MousePad discussion boards and to the Disney Parks Blog, the announcement was a major disappointment to food and wine fans, and was especially surprising considering Disney had already announced the dates of the 2011 event in July, far earlier than usual. There was even a specific mention of the event in the recent press release announcing the new marketing partnership between Disney and Ocean Spray, and plans were revealed for building a cranberry bog at the California event.
While Disney has said that the Festival will not be presented for 2011 and 2012, some readers (and honestly, quite a few MousePlanet staff members), are hoping that some of the related activities that were held at the hotels instead of inside the park, to include the winemaker dinners and the Napa Rose cooking school, might still be scheduled. According to the Disney Parks Blog, once Cars Land is opened in 2012, the Disneyland Resort will continue to look at special events and festivals.

Holiday Menu Preview
MousePlanet readers wrote pages and pages on our MousePad discussion forum about the delicious treats offered at the Disneyland Resort during HalloweenTime, and so with the holiday season right around the corner we asked Karlos Siqueiros from Disneyland's Food Concepts department for a preview of what we can expect to find when Holiday Time starts on November 12. Karlos said to expect a mix of traditional favorites mixed with a few new treats, plus a brand-new popcorn bucket. Here's a preview:
Holiday Desserts
Most table-service and tray-service restaurants (like Plaza Inn and French Market) will have a special holiday dessert offering, with specific items varying by location. The Plaza Inn will feature a traditional Yule Log dessert created by Disneyland Resort executive pastry chef, Jean-Marc Viallet. Karlos says two versions of the cake will be offered, and that Viallet brought the recipes from France. Around Thanksgiving the yule log will be crafted of pumpkin spice cake and filled with pumpkin mousse and lingonberry marmalade; in December look for a chocolate cake with a chocolate / chestnut mousse, lingonberry marmalade and chocolate ganache frosting.
The Plaza Inn will also be one of the locations to offer a Santa Mickey demitasse cup. Karlos says this keepsake cup may be the start of a new holiday series, with new designs released annually. The demitasse cups are also available at Blue Ribbon Bakery, Bakersfield Bakery, Rancho del Zocalo, Carnation, Blue Bayou, Big Thunder Ranch BBQ and Storytellers Cafe; dessert offerings will vary by restaurant location.
For those tres leches fans, rest assured that the traditional dessert will once again be offered at Rancho del Zocalo. Karlos says, “Families come every year, and they have to have their favorite [desserts] over and over again.”
Café Orleans will again offer holiday-themed beignets, but the specific flavor has not been determined. A server at the location told me that the holiday version would be chocolate with a peppermint crème anglaise, but Karlos says that hasn't been determined. He says the gingerbread version offered during HalloweenTime was so popular that it may stick around another season. Unfortunately Disney has no plans to offer the holiday beignettes at the Julep Bar or Royal Street Verandah yet, so be prepared to make a reservation at Café Orleans if you'd like to try one of these treats.
While not a dessert, Café Orleans and French Market will both continue to offer Nightmare Before Christmas pewter figurines as a gift with a $35 purchase. A new figure is released each Sunday.
Finally, the Resort bakeries will offer a selection of holiday treats, including a chocolate cupcake with a mint twist that Karlos says is incredible.
Holiday entrees and meals
While menu specifics were not yet available, look for special holiday-themed entrees at Plaza Inn, Rancho del Zocalo and Red Rocket's Pizza Port. Plaza Inn, Carnation, Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, Wine Country Trattoria, Storytellers Café, Steakhouse 55, and PCH Grill will all offer special holiday menus on Thanksgiving and Christmas days, and reservations are now being accepted. Outdoor vending
Building on the success of the adorable Ghost Mickey popcorn bucket offered during HalloweenTime, Disneyland is releasing a Snowman Mickey popcorn bucket for the holidays. Outdoor vending locations will also offer a holiday-theme travel mug and the regular souvenir popcorn bucket with a holiday motif.
Boudin Bakery
Boudin Bakery will offer a selection of specially shaped breads for the holidays that Karlos says you can take home and make part of your dinner. A traditional Turkey shape will be offered at Thanksgiving, followed by candy cane, wreath, stocking and snowman-shaped loaves. The turkey design will be available November 12 through Thanksgiving; holiday shapes will be offered sometime in December.
Holiday Overlay Begins
The official Holidays at the Disneyland Resort seasonal event does not officially begin until this coming Friday, November 12, but fans of garland, wreaths and candy cane striping can get an early glimpse of the some of the magical decorations that will adorn the Disneyland Resort for the remainder of 2010.

Taping of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade
On November 6 and 7, ABC television transformed Main Street, USA into working movie studio as dozens of film crews, performers and guests crowded the main artery of Disneyland to film the Disneyland portion of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade which will air December 25, 2010. Headlining the event were Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Selena Gomez, and Nick Cannon.

Disney generally declines to confirm the filming schedule in advance, but signs at the entrance to Disneyland alerted visitors to the happenings as soon as they entered the park. The main stage was setup in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.

The taping began at 8:00 in the morning, and the Plaza Hub was off limits to guest so that film crews and equipment could capture the performances. The portion of Main Street, USA immediately in front of the Sleeping Beauty’s Castle was also off limits to Disneyland guests so that boom cameras could maneuver freely during the filming.

Though Disney does not like to publicize the annual filming in advance, they did post additional photos after the fact on the Disney Parks Blog (link), as well as the scheduled broadcast times so you can see the finished show on Christmas Day:
- Eastern Time Zone: Noon to 2 p.m.
- Central Time Zone: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Mountain Time Zone: 10 a.m. to noon
- Pacific Time Zone: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Los Angeles: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
DCA construction update
Disney California Adventure Park is still a hotbed of construction activity. Demolition of the entrance mural on the west side continues to progress slowly compared to last week’s update, but sections of the building that houses Guest Relations and Greetings From California are now visible.

The Sunshine Plaza as guests once knew it is gone, and work has begun to remove the former fountain structure. Construction walls now surround the area that will be re-themed to 1920s-era Los Angeles. The ElecTRONica preshow stage has now been moved to the front of the former Sunshine Plaza.

The roof of the former Pizza Oom Mow Mow location continues to change; this week it appears the two skylights have been covered. The former surf-themed restaurant will reopen as Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta. The murals and signage of the former Mulholland Madness ride have almost been completely removed as work continues to transform the “mad mouse” coaster into the new Goofy’s Sky School theme.

This and That…
…The final performances of Celebrate! A Street Party! will be this Thursday at Disneyland. The parade will be replaced for the holiday season by the Christmas Fantasy Parade, and then the new Mickey's Soundsational Parade will debut in 2011.
…Actor Neil Patrick Harris posted on his Twitter account ( @ActuallyNPH ) this weekend a comment asking “Has anyone been on the California Screamin' roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure lately? I hear it's better than ever…” Twitter user @DizzyPixer10 said that Harris recorded a new launch spiel for the DCA attraction.

These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the ongoing Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

- Cast member holiday parties – December 13 & 14 (unconfirmed). Disneyland usually closes early one or two nights each holiday season for the annual cast member parties, but the dates have not yet been announced. The calendar on Disneyland.com shows the park closing early on December 13 and 14, and one source confirms that these are the cast party dates.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by 10/1/2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: 12/24/10-1/1/11; 2/18/11-2/21/11; 4/17/11-4/23/11; and 7/1/11-7/4/11. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) –A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. Hotel/Travel Packages
Fall discount offers – Disneyland has extended two discount offers for the three Disneyland Resort Hotels, with extra room-only discounts for travelers who book their trips before the end of September.
If you need a room and theme park tickets, Disneyland is offering a discount of up to $300 on a four-day, four-night vacation package, which includes 4-day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper bonus tickets and four nights at a Disneyland Resort hotel. This package also includes admission to one Magic Morning at Disneyland (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness at Disneyland (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday), one Walt Disney Travel Company pin and lanyard per person, preferred seating to select shows in Disney's California Adventure Park (where available; note that Aladdin will be on hiatus for much of the fall), and a Disney Character Call from Mickey, Minnie, or Goofy (offered to guests who book online).The offer is valid for arrivals from October 1 through December 16. Packages can be booked through December 1, and travel must be completed by December 20.

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accommodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day – one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Travel (link).
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
