Disneyland Resort sued in 2006 dog-mauling
Multiple news sources are reporting that a Valencia, California family has filed suit against the Disneyland Resort, claiming their toddler was mauled by a dog at the Big Thunder Ranch petting zoo in October of 2006. According to the suit, Disneyland brought in a “not very social” dog from a local shelter to use in its petting zoo, and the dog mauled a 2-year-old girl, leaving her permanently scarred. The suit includes some curious statements, alleging the dog, named Hemmingway, was “walked in parades where fireworks were constantly exploding overhead”—curious because fireworks are not used during parades at Disneyland. Disney has not responded to media requests for comment, citing the pending litigation. MousePad discussion board members, including Disneyland cast members and frequent park guests, have mixed opinions of the suit, with few recalling the presence of a dog at the petting zoo at all (link). However, photographs apparently taken September 29, 2006 (link) show a dog attended by a cast member at Big Thunder Ranch. It’s not known whether that is the dog in question, but it does appear that at least one dog was on exhibit during that period. The actual complaint filed in Orange County Superior Court is available here: (pdf link). Slowly… step by step… inch by inch… Halloween creeps into Disneyland
Halloween is slowly making its way into Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, most visibly with the annual redecoration of the Haunted Mansion as Haunted Mansion Holiday, now open. Nearby, the French Market has reopened from a three-week refurbishment and now features special Halloween- and Haunted Mansion-themed desserts. Woody’s Roundup has returned to Big Thunder Ranch. Pumpkins, harvest wreaths and seasonal decorations adorn both parks. Look for Halloween photos throughout this Update and in a special HalloweenTime photo tour coming up soon on MousePlanet.

Monorail Blue now in passenger service
MousePlanet’s Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix spotted the brand-new Monorail Blue, until very recently making empty trips around the Resort, carrying passengers. Blue suffers from the same cabin airflow problems as Red, so maximum passenger loads are reduced from 22 to 15 per cabin and small fans are mounted in the rooftop hatchways. We haven’t heard yet of any long-term plans to solve the cooling problem, but we’ll certainly pass it along when we do.

What else will you celebrate?
Following up on last week’s announcement (link) about Disney Parks and “Celebration Vacations,” we received some additional information about a couple of the exciting special programs coming to Disneyland for “What Will You Celebrate?”
The Disneyland Birthday Club is an online club offering Disney fans of all ages a complimentary Virtual Birthday Party via e-mail. After registering at the Birthday Club Web page online (link), you will receive a happy birthday e-mail with birthday greetings from your favorite Disney character, complete with “virtual” balloons and streamers, catchy birthday music and even a fantasy birthday cake with candles to “blow out,” along with some additional birthday surprises.
In addition, the Club Web site features birthday party planning tips available upon registration.
The Disneyland Birthday Club is an at-home online feature, free with registration, where you can opt to join the Club when you register for the “Free On Your Birthday” ticket using the “What Will You Celebrate” link at the Disneyland Web site (link). As noted earlier, guests won’t begin using “Free On Your Birthday” tickets until 2009.
Disneyland Birthday Club registration is now open. The first birthday e-mails will be sent in November. A Spanish-language version of the Birthday Club site, is scheduled to go online next week (link).
In other “What Will You Celebrate?” news, Disneyland is opening its own version of the “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique,” already a popular offering at Walt Disney World in Florida. At Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, a fairy godmother-in-training offers young girls a dream-come-true “princess makeover” with various choices and combinations of makeup, hairstyle, nails, and so on.
Beginning in April, there will be a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in Fantasyland at Disneyland, located in what is currently Once Upon A Time-The Disney Princess Shoppe (which, even before that, was the Tinker Bell Toy Shoppe).

“it’s a small world” facade revealed
As its 10-month refurbishment approaches completion, the protective tarps have been removed from the “it’s a small world” facade in Fantasyland. MousePad member ‘Smorri’ sent us these photos (link) of the refurbished facade.

Miley Cyrus fans should beware of scalped birthday tickets
Brady MacDonald of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Disneyland Resort has instituted strict anti-scalping measures for the October 5 16th birthday party for Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. Among other restrictions, MacDonald reports, only the original ticket purchaser may pick up party tickets and only on the day of the event; the original purchaser must provide the receipt and invitation letter; and all guests of the ticket purchaser must enter the party at the same time. Disney hopes these procedures will discourage scalping of these $250/person tickets, which have been spotted on eBay fetching upwards of $500 apiece. (link)

…At Disney’s studio update (link) last Wednesday, chairman Dick Cook announced the Cars sequel will now debut in 2011—one year earlier than previously expected, and this ties in with the opening of “Cars Land” at Disney’s California Adventure the same year.
…The Hyatt Regency Orange County announced a special “Suites on Sale” vacation package, which upgrades guests to their choice of an eligible suite at a preferred rate of 50 percent off the regular upgrade premium (link).
…For those who live in the United Arab Emirates or nearby area, Emirates Holidays is offering several all-inclusive packages from Dubai to California, including Disneyland/Los Angeles and San Francisco, coinciding with Emirates Airways’ first non-stop flights from Dubai to LAX and SFO in October and December, respectively (link).
…Los Angeles Lakers star and Olympic gold medalist Kobe Bryant was spotted in the park last Monday, shepherded by only one Guest Relations cast member and one bodyguard.

…Lindsay Lohan and girlfriend Samantha Ronson were also seen at Disneyland last week, according to Celebrity-Gossip.net (link).
…Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies and Anaheim Police Department arrested Anthony Hislar, of Monrovia, just outside Disneyland around 6:30 p.m last Wednesday. Hislar was arrested on a burglary warrant out of Ventura County and, according to Sheriff’s Department spokesman Carlos Lopez, was injured while struggling with deputies and officers and was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim for treatment and later released to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (link).

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Deluxe Annual Passport |
Costco members can receive a $50 Disneyland gift card when they purchase a Deluxe Disneyland Resort annual passport for $269 at a participating Costco location. The offer should be available at all Costco stores that currently sell Disneyland admission, but the vouchers may not have arrived in all locations yet. The ticket will also be available through the Costco Web site in the near future.
There are no residency restrictions on this ticket, and it can be upgraded to a Deluxe with parking or Premium passport. Better still, the $50 gift card can be applied towards the cost of the upgrades, which nearly pays for the $59 parking option or drops the net cost of a Premium Annual Passport to just $339. |

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
