World of Color; Imagineer Kim Irvine win TEA awards
The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) announced its annual Thea Awards for Outstanding Achievement last week, recognizing Disney’s World of Color show for Outstanding Achievement – Nighttime Spectacular; and honoring Imagineer Kim Irvine with The Buzz Price Award, the association’s lifetime achievement award.
link). The show features a 19,000-square-foot water screen, a show platform larger than a football field, and over 1,200 fountains—some of which can produce 200-foot-high columns of water. Disney claims more than a million people have watched the show since it debuted in June 2010.

Irvine is the Art Director for Disneyland, and is known for projects like the 50th Anniversary overlay of Sleeping Beauty Castle, the creation of the Disneyland Dream Suite, the addition of characters to “it’s a small world,” the update of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the relocation and renovation of the Disney Gallery. Irvine has worked for Walt Disney Imagineering since 1970, and is the daughter of Leota Toombs, who portrays Madame Leota in the Haunted Mansion. Irvine portrays Madame Leota in the Haunted Mansion Holiday version of the attraction.
Disney goes Gowalla
If you’ve mastered the art of sharing your life in 140 characters or less via Twitter, and regularly update your status on Facebook, you may already have heard of Gowalla, a Web-based social networking service (link). Gowalla members use their cell phone to “check in” at locations like parks, restaurants and stores (known as spots), and can share their location with friends and family. Gowalla members have a virtual passport, and can receive virtual stamps when they check in, and can earn virtual (and sometimes real-world) prizes for certain activities.
Gowalla users can collect virtual Disney “stamps” when they visit Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Photo (c) Disney.
Disney Parks Social Media Director Thomas Smith announced last week the company has partnered with Gowalla (link), and unveiled some of the special Disney-designed passport stamps Gowalla users can collect when they check in at parks, rides and shows. Disney has also created a series of “trips,” (the Gowalla terms for a series of spots), and is offering virtual “pins” to users when they complete a trip. The trips include a “Fun for Young Ones” collection of spots such as Playhouse Disney and the Duffy the Disney Bear meet-and-greet location, and a “Seasons Greetings” trip with stops at “it’s a small world” and the Christmas Fantasy parade.
The choice to go with Gowalla instead of the better-established Foursquare application was met with some complaints by readers who posted comments to the Disney Parks blog, but others commented that the Disney tie-in was enough to make them switch to Gowalla.
Do you use an application like Gowalla now, and if so, what do you like about it? If you don’t already use Gowalla, or if you’re a Foursquare fan, does the Disney partnership make you want to sign up or switch? If you have no idea what a Gowalla is (which I’ll admit, I didn’t until a few months ago), how do you feel about Disney’s forays into social and location networking? Tell us what you think in the comments below, or on our MousePad discussion forum (link).
[Editor’s note: A word of caution. Location-based apps like Gowalla and Foursquare have the ability to let everyone know where you are—including the fact that you are away on a vacation to a Disney theme park and that your home is empty and ripe for burglary. Be mindful of your privacy settings should you decide to forward your Gowalla check-ins to Twitter or Facebook, and make sure your announcements are only broadcast to your trusted friends.]
Candy cane time at Disneyland
If your holiday tradition includes a trip to Disneyland for one of its famous fresh-made candy canes, here are the dates and details you’ll need to start making plans. The first batch of fresh candy canes will be made at the Candy Palace on Main Street, U.S.A. on November 26, the day after Thanksgiving. The full schedule is:
- Friday, November 26
- Tuesday, November 30
- Thursday, December 9
- Saturday, December 11
- Monday, December 13
- Friday, December 17
- Tuesday, December 21
The candy canes cost $9.95 each, and are limited to two per person. Disneyland usually makes two—sometimes three—batches a day, but the number of candy canes in each batch can vary based in temperature and humidity. The typical batch yields fewer than 90 canes. Tickets will be distributed at the Candy Palace at park opening each day, and the first batch of candy canes are usually available to purchase about one hour after the official park opening time. The second and third batches are usually ready 90-minutes to two hours apart.
Disneyland’s fresh-made candy canes were once a little-known secret among Disney fans, but have become increasingly popular after being featured on the Food Network and Disney’s official blogs. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
If you are not staying in a hotel that offers “Magic Morning” access, I recommend that you avoid days where Magic Morning is offered (usually Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but check the Disneyland.com calendar for updates), or plan to wait for the second or third batch to be ready. My experience has been that the tickets for the first batch are usually distributed to hotel guests during Magic Morning before day guests get into the park at official park opening.
It’s also important to note that the schedule posted here is subject to change at any time—the 2009 release schedule changed at least three times. Follow the discussion in our Disneyland Trip Planning forum for the latest updates as we learn about them.
World of Color dining update
The Wine Country Trattoria is now accepting reservations for a World of Color package, which includes a fixed-price lunch and reserved viewing for the World of Color (link). The meal is $29.99 for adults ($18.99 for children ages 3 to 9) and includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The packages are offered for shows beginning November 26, but are not offered every day; call 714-781-3463 to check availability and make your reservation.
Beware that the announcement states the World of Color lunch package comes with “reserved viewing,” not “preferred reserved viewing.” A call to the Disneyland Dine Line confirmed that purchasing the lunch package only gives you tickets to the same viewing area reserved for people who purchase the picnic lunch package, and not to the “preferred” viewing area set aside for people who purchase the more expensive dinner package. On nights when two World of Color shows are performed, guests who book lunch between 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. receive tickets for the first show, while guests who dine between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. receive tickets to the second show.
Disney is also raising the price of the World of Color Picnic meals by $1 to $15.99 each, for shows on and after December 10, 2010 (link). The discounted price offered to Disneyland Resort annual passholders increases to $13.99.
Disney Cruise Line to offer Wave Phone service
Disney will offer guests the use of “Portable Wave Phones” on board the ships of the Disney Cruise Line starting in December (Thursday, December 16 on the Disney WonderDisney Magic.) The portable phones can send and receive phone calls and text messages from other Wave phones when used on board the ship or on Castaway Cay. The phones do not work off the ship, and do not appear to work with other carriers; you can use the device to call other Wave Phones on Disney’s network, but not to call home.
Each stateroom will come equipped with two of the phones; concierge staterooms come with four phones. There is currently no charge to use the service, but you can rent additional units for $3.50 per unit per day if you need more than come with your room. There is a $250 charge per unit if they are lost, stolen, or damaged, so that’s something to consider before handing them to your pool-bound kids.
Disney is planning to use these phones to replace the pager system currently used by the Youth Activities department, which means that one parent/guardian must carry the unit at all times. If you don’t have kids in Youth Programming and you don’t want to use the phones, you can turn them in and Disney will turn off the service for your stateroom for the cruise.
As with most things there are going to be people who are thrilled with this new service, and those who will grumble that it will take some of the magic away from the cruise environment. Having just experienced a situation where we couldn’t find one member of our party during our recent cruise, I know that we would have been grateful to have had access to one of these phones.
That said, part of the appeal of cruising for me is that I’m not “connected” 100% of the time like I tend to be at home. I once locked my husband’s BlackBerry device in the room safe because he wouldn’t stop checking his work e-mail during a trip, and this is just one more intrusion of technology into our vacation. I also dread the inevitable interruptions during shows or in the restaurants by someone who “forgot” to turn their phone to silent, or who has decided to have a long conversation during dinner. I do hope Disney implements a strict ‘no phones” rule for the dining rooms, and reminds people to set them to silent before the stage shows.
Disney unveils the Fairy Tale Suite at the Disneyland Hotel
The Disney Parks Blog posted photos of the newest Signature Suite at the Disneyland Hotel, the Fairy Tale Suite. For those who ever hoped to spend the night in the Dream Suite inside Disneyland, here’s your chance to stay in a room almost as lavishly decorated.
The new Fairy Tale Suite is a smaller version of Disneyland’s Dream Suite. Photo (c) Disney.
The suite is located in the Dreams tower, and features a marble entry, canopy bed, and an elegant bathroom with Jacuzzi tub. The room costs $650 to $945 per night, depending on season, and can be booked by calling (714) 956-6425.

Passholder shopping event update
We have some updated information for those planning to brave the crowds for the “Early shopping opportunity” offered to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, D23 members, Disney Vacation Club owners, and Club 33 members on Saturday, December 4 at the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney Anaheim. The information we published last week was incorrect; passholders, D23 Members, Disney Vacation Club Members and Club 33 Members may bring family and friends to shop with them so long as one person in the party presents a qualifying identification (annual pass or D23, DVC, or Club 33 membership card.)
The World of Disney store will open at 6:30 a.m. for the sale, and Disney asks that shoppers not arrive before 5:45 a.m. Customers will be directed to form a line behind the Rainforest Cafe, and will be escorted to the World of Disney store for the start of the sale. Disney requests that customers park in the Downtown Disney parking lot, and notes that parking fees apply after 10 a.m.
If you are planning to enter the resort from the Harbor Boulevard entrance, you will need to cross the esplanade and walk through Downtown Disney to join the line at the Rainforest Cafe, as customers will not be permitted to wait outside the World of Disney store before 6:30.
This and That…
…The Associated Press reported last week that Disneyland will no longer house the pardoned presidential turkey, ending a short-lived tradition which began in 2005 when the park was celebrating its 50th anniversary (link). The AP reports that the pardoned turkey and alternate will instead be sent to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia to live out their remaining years. Three of the pardoned presidential turkeys, Pecan from 2008 and Courage and Carolina from 2009, are still in residence at Disneyland’s Big Thunder Ranch.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

- Fall 2011 MouseAdventure – no details yet. Visit MouseAdventure.com to sign up for our newsletter.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

|
Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by 10/1/2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: 12/24/10-1/1/11; 2/18/11-2/21/11; 4/17/11-4/23/11; and 7/1/11-7/4/11. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($186/$165) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($201/$178) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $15/day value). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. |
|

If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15-per-day value). |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
