Surviving the holiday crowds
The rain storms which drenched Southern California for nearly a week have moved on, at least temporarily, creating a not-so-perfect storm of crowding at the Disneyland Resort. Thousands of holiday visitors descended on the Resort as soon as the skies cleared, forcing Disneyland to impose admission restrictions on Christmas Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, the crowds forced Resort managers to entirely shut Disneyland’s front gates for a short time, a step taken only when the park has reached the capacity set by the fire marshall. Annual passholders and visitors who had already purchased tickets were instead offered entry to Disney California Adventure park until the Disneyland crowds thinned enough to allow the gates to reopen.
With more rain in the forecast for Wednesday, expect the crowds to be just as heavy Tuesday, and to return along with the sun on Thursday. Once again, we recommend that visitors planning trips to the theme parks purchase their tickets in advance, as guests who already hold valid admission have more options when Disneyland starts imposing crowd-control measures than do people who show up without tickets. We also recommend that you arrive as early in the day as possible if you are planning to visit Disneyland. If Disneyland is again forced to close the gates due to crowding, even a pre-paid ticket or annual pass won’t get you through the turnstiles.
Don’t forget that the Resort is offering a 30-percent dining discount for those who are willing to dine during off-peak hours (before noon, or between 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.) this week. The discount is valid now through January 3, 2011, and applies to your entire bill (not including alcohol) with the purchase of an entree. You must use a voucher to take advantage of this promotion. You can either download these in advance from the Disney Web site (download voucher), or use the ones in the Holiday Entertainment Guide available at the theme parks, or printed at the bottom of a food or merchandise receipt. The discount is valid at the French Market; Hungry Bear; Rancho del Zocalo; Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port and Tomorrowland Terrace in Disneyland, as well as at Cocina Cucamonga; Lucky Fortune Cookery; Pacific Wharf Cafe; Taste Pilot’s Grill and Award Wieners in Disney California Adventure. MousePlanet reader PhiSigDuchessCV used a voucher last week, and said, “[ I ] went to Red Rockett Pizza about 2:55 because I figured by the time I got my food and checked out I would be able to use the coupon. Grab my pizza and drink and checked out by 3:05. I sat down and then looked outside. The line was LONG!!!! There hadn’t been a line when I went in to the place.” If you’re planning to use the coupons for lunch, follow her lead and get there just a few minutes early to avoid the rush.
New Years at Disneyland
If you’re planning to ring in the New Year at the Disneyland Resort, have a choice to make – do you opt for Fantasmic and fireworks at Disneyland, or ElecTRONica and World of Color at Disney California Adventure? It’s not unusual to see Disneyland reach maximum capacity on New Years Eve, but this year may see similar crowding issues at Disney California Adventure due to that park’s new and extremely popular entertainment offerings. We’ve presented the entertainment highlights below to help you plan your evening, but you can see the complete entertainment schedule at Disneyland.com (link).
Disneyland will be open 8am to 2am. Holiday entertainment includes the Christmas Fantasy Parade at 2:30pm and 5:30pm, and the Believe… in Holiday Magic fireworks at 8:40pm. Disneyland will also present the “Fantasy in the Sky” New Year’s fireworks show at midnight. Fantasmic is scheduled at 9pm and 10:15pm, and immediately following the midnight fireworks.
Disney California Adventure will be open 10am to 1am. Park entertainment includes Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular and the Pixar Play Parade (one of the last opportunities to see the parade before it goes on hiatus), along with the new Disney Channel Rocks and Disney Dance Crew shows. ElecTRONica begins at 6pm, and the is certain to be one of the most popular entertainment offerings of the night. In addition to the regular 8pm and 9:15pm performances of World of Color, a special midnight showing has been added. The Disney Parks Blog says there will be a “fountains and fireworks” countdown in Paradise Park just before the first World of Color show of 2011.
Keep in mind that New Years Eve is one of the most crowded days of the year, especially when it falls on a weekend as it does this year. Pack extra patience, and keep these tips in mind as you prepare to bid farewell to 2010:
- Decide if you want to end your night with fireworks and Fantasmic at Disneyland, or ElecTRONica and World of Color at Disney California Adventure. Park hopping may not be allowed if the parks get too crowded, so pick a park and stick with it.
- Get there as early as possible and plan to make a day of it. Both parks may reach capacity before Noon, and you may not be allowed to enter or re-enter the park once the crowd-control restrictions are in place. This is not the day to go “off-site” for lunch, or return to your hotel room for a nap.
- This is also not the day for riding every single ride and seeing every single show. We recommend using Disney’s free Fastpass service where possible to reduce your wait times, but be prepared for long lines. If you have a iPhone you can download a diversion like the Wishing Stars application to play between rides (link), or pick up a copy of the Disneyland edition of the Hidden Mickeys book to read while you’re waiting in line (link).
- While a little planning can help make the day more enjoyable, you should also be prepared to be flexible and change your plans on the fly. Expect to grab a meal on the run if your preferred restaurant is too busy, skip a favorite ride if the line is too long, and explore parts of the park you may never have seen before.
- Movie-based attractions, like Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Captain EO, It’s Tough to be a Bug and Muppet*Vision 3-D offer an opportunity to get out of the crowds and sit down, even if just for 15 minutes. Peruse the Blue Sky Cellar in DCA, explore the Disney Gallery on Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A., or go play with some new and not-so-new technology in Innoventions.
- Both parks will distribute complimentary hats and horns starting at 6pm, but the line can get long and supplies are limited. Disneyland will distribute hats near Big Thunder Ranch; DCA will distribute hats near Soarin’ Over California.
- Unless you’re willing to get there at park opening and sit on a bench for 18 hours, don’t even worry about seeing the midnight fireworks from directly in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. There’s a large group of folks who make it an annual tradition to hold that prime bit of real estate so they’ll have the perfect view of the festivities, and the area will be completely full by mid-morning.
- One strategy for getting a good view of the fireworks is to wait until just after the Believe… in Holiday Magic show ends (it’s scheduled for 8:40 p.m. on December 31st), and then grab a spot as people leave that show. You’ll still have a three-hour wait until the Midnight show, so bring something to pass the time. We also recommend viewing fireworks from near “it’s a small world,” which is usually less crowded than Main Street.
- Don’t forget to wear or pack warm clothes, as it can get really chilly inside the parks at night. Locker rental is much cheaper than purchasing Disney-priced sweatshirts, scarves and gloves, so plan ahead.
- The Resort often suspends tram service immediately following the fireworks shows due to the number of people trying to exit the parks, so wait around a bit if you don’t want to walk back to the parking structure.
Disneyland steps off the grid during power outage
There has to be a TRON joke in here somewhere, but Disneyland visitors weren’t laughing when a major power failure forced the closure of more than a dozen rides, stores and restaurants Christmas night, including the popular Haunted Mansion Holiday and Pirates of the Caribbean attractions. According to readers who were in the park during the power failure, the outage began Saturday night and impacted all of New Orleans Square and portions of Adventureland and Critter Country. The outage forced all of the New Orleans Square restaurants, including Cafe Orleans, Blue Bayou and Club 33, to cancel reservations, and resulted in extremely long lines at the park’s other eateries. Power was restored Sunday night, and all attractions were reportedly operational on Monday. We have no information about the cause of the outage.
2011 Rose Bowl teams and bands visit Disneyland
The bands representing the two teams competing in the 2011 Rose Bowl Game will visit Disneyland Park on Wednesday, December 29th for their traditional pre-game performances. The “Pride of TCU” Horned Frog Marching Band from Texas Christian University will perform starting at Noon; the University of Wisconsin Marching Band will perform starting at 3:15 p.m. Both bands will perform concerts in Disneyland’s Town Square, then march along Disneyland’s parade route.
On December 26, Texas Christian University head coach Gary Patterson, University of Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema and players from each team were on hand for the annual “Media Day” ceremony at Disneyland, where each coach received a crystal replica of Sleeping Beauty Castle. After the ceremony players for both teams rode the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Mad Tea Party to pose for media photos.
Seven days and counting to DCA’s extreme makeover
Though this week’s focus is on the holiday crowds and schedules, we can’t forget that a major new phase of the Disney California Adventure park renovation project is slated to begin in just a week. Brady MacDonald at the LA Times wrote a summary of the changes coming during this next phase, beginning with the removal of the C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters at the park entrance starting next Tuesday and concluding with the debut of the newly-remodeled main entrance next August (link). According to the article, park managers have settled on the emergency gates between the World of Disney store and La Brea Bakery as the location of the temporary park entrance during the most disruptive phase of construction.
This and That…
…The Disneyland Resort has started its after-Christmas sale, offering discounts of up to 50% off holiday and 2010-dated merchandise. The best selections can be found in the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney, the China Close or Showcase shops in Disneyland, and Greetings in California and Off the Page in Disney California Adventure.
…If your park tickets include Magic Morning admission, don’t forget that Disneyland is offering Magic Mornings everyday except Wednesdays through December 31.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by 10/1/2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: 12/24/10-1/1/11; 2/18/11-2/21/11; 4/17/11-4/23/11; and 7/1/11-7/4/11. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($169/$152) – A discounted price offered with advance purchase through the Disneyland Web site (link). This discount is not available at the theme park ticket booths, you must purchase online before you arrive. Tickets are valid January 4 – April 14, 2011. Tickets must be purchased by, and first day of use must occur on or before, April 14, 2011. Tickets expire 13 days after the first day of use or April 27, 2011, whichever occurs first. “Promotional Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($186/$165) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($182/$163) – A discounted price offered with advance purchase through the Disneyland Web site (link). Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($201/$178) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
