Team MousePlanet raises over $5000 for Children’s Hospital Orange County

25 MousePlanet readers and staff members will participate in next weekend’s CHOC/Disneyland Resort Walk in the Park. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Team MousePlanet Walkers, and with the generous support of MousePlanet readers across the country, we have raised over $5000 for this worthy organization. Team MousePlanet is currently ranked in 19th place out of the 466 teams registered for the Walk, a tremendous showing for our first year.

There is still time to join Team MousePlanet and help raise money for Children’s Hospital Orange County. Disneyland Resort tests Dining Plan

The Disneyland Resort began testing their own version of the Disney Dining Plan on Sunday, October 12. This limited trial, which runs through December 20, 2008, is being offered to some visitors who book trips through the Disney Travel Company. The trial version of this plan offers two different options – a Quick Service Meal Plan, and the Dining Meal Plan.

• Visitors who choose the Quick Service Meal Plan will receive two (2) Quick Service meal vouchers and one (1) Snack voucher per person (ages 3 and up), per night of their stay.
• Visitors who choose the Dining Meal Plan will receive one (1) Table Service voucher, one (1) Quick Service voucher and one (1) Snack voucher per person (ages 3 and up), per night of their stay.
• Both the Table Service and Quick Service vouchers are valid for one (1) entree, one (1) dessert and one (1) nonalcoholic beverage at a participating location. Gratuity (where applicable) is not included, and children ages 3-9 must order from the children’s menu where offered.
• “Signature restaurants” and select Character meals require two Table Service vouchers per person.
• Snack vouchers may be redeemed for a regular popcorn, churro, fresh fruit, ice cream, 20-oz drink or cotton candy from a participating location.
• Table service vouchers are valid at: Cafe Orleans, Carnation Cafe, PCH Grill (dinner), Hook’s Pointe, Storyteller’s Cafe (lunch / dinner), Wine Country Trattoria, Yamakbuki, Lost Bar and the Surfside Lounge, as well as the character breakfasts at PCH Grill and Storytellers Cafe, and the character breakfast and lunch at Goofy’s Kitchen.
• Signature Restaurants include Steakhouse 55 (dinner only), Blue Bayou, Napa Rose and the Napa Rose Bar, plus the “Signature” Character meals at Ariel’s Grotto (lunch and dinner) and Goofy’s Kitchen (dinner).
• About 30 Quick Service restaurants locations are participating in this program, and we’ll post the list as soon as we have it.

One reader who was invited to participate in the trial reported receiveing the offer via a postcard that contained a unique PIN. Other readers who called Disney to inquire about the offer were told that they must have a PIN in order to add the program to their reservation. Pricing and availability details were not include in the information distributed to most CMs over the weekend, but one reader was quoted $39.99 per day for adults and $11.99 per day for children for the Dining Meal Plan. A cast member tells us the Quick Service Meal Plan should be about $30 per day for adults and $10 per day for children. Disney may also test customer reaction by offering different packages and prices to different visitors.

It appears that the Resort will use paper vouchers during this trial period, instead of allowing guests to use their Resort Hotel keys as is the practice in Walt Disney World. Registration now open for the 2009 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend

Online registration opened this morning for the 2009 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, including the 2009 Disneyland Half Marathon and the 2009 Family Fun Run 5K and Kids’ Races (link).

Given the complaints from participants in the 2008 event after the race course was modified to exclude the run through Angels Stadium, it’s worth noting that the event Web site does not currently show the race course. Instead, the race description reads “We are hard at work creating a magical new course!” and encourages participants to check back later.

Save $30 on a Deluxe Disneyland Resort Annual Passport 

The Disneyland Resort sent out a mailer offering a $30 discount on a Deluxe Disneyland Annual Passport. The offer is valid only on new purchases, and does not apply to renewals. The offer expires 12/31/08, and is available only for purchases made online at disneyland.com/deluxeoffer.

Although it appears that the mailing was only sent to residents in Southern California, nothing in the printed mailer or on the offer Web site states that the offer is limited to the named recipient, or to SoCal residents. Two MousePlanet readers who attempted to use this offer last week received an error message that the offer is available only to residents of Southern California, but it appears that a glitch in the Disneyland Web site has been corrected, and at least one MousePlanet reader has been able to purchase these tickets using a non-California address.

Other Southern California readers have reported receiving offers for either a free one-day or free two-day admission ticket. Some of these offers were sent to Passholders who had not renewed their passes; other readers reported that the offer they receive was printed in Spanish.

Another union, another protest

Crystal Magic, a Disney lessee that sells laser-etched crystal souvenirs at several shops in the Disneyland Resort, was once again the target of a pamphleting action in at the Disneyland Resort last week. About a dozen people gathered in Downtown Disney Wednesday afternoon to distribute flyers claiming that Crystal Magic’s management violates labor laws relating to meal & break periods and overtime pay. This is at least the third such action against Crystal Magic in recent months.

A MousePlanet reader noticed the activity, and wondered why Disney security was allowing the workers to distribute flyers to visitors walking through Downtown Disney. Disney cast members tell us that the activists were actually organizers from the union that represents the retail store cast members at the Disneyland Resort, and that these protests have been part of a so-far unsuccessful attempt to unionize the Crystal Magic employees.
 

This and That

… Just a warning for readers who are planning visits to the Disneyland Resort this week – prepare for crowds. Many Utah public schools close October 16 & 17 so teachers can attend the Utah Education Association convention in Utah, creating a four-day weekend for the students. Some claim ‘UEA’ stands for ‘Utah Escapes to Anaheim,’ and this weekend usually brings a spike in visitors from the Beehive State.

…Disneyland has raised the height limit for the Autopia attraction. Riders must be at least 32″ tall to ride, and at least 54″ tall to drive solo.

…Some Canadian MousePlanet readers have reported seeing commercials advertising an “Everyone Gets In for the Kids’ Price” promotion. This discount is currently available on 3-day or longer Park Hopper tickets purchased through the Disneyland Resort Web site (link), and the tickets are valid January 6 through April 30, 2009.

…If you’re upset that Fantasmic is closed through November 6, you can console yourself with a rare nighttime cruise on the Mark Twain. The trip around the Rivers of America takes on an entirely different feeling after dark, and the upper deck of the Mark Twain offers a fantastic view of the fireworks.

• “it’s a small world” – closed for a nine-month refurbishment, and is currently scheduled to reopen on Saturday November 29, 2008. The nearby Toy Shop is also closed during the renovation.

• Harbour Galley – closed through December 15 for conversion from a McDonald’s French fry outlet into an unspecified food service location.
• Sailing Ship Columbia – closed through October 24 for refurbishment.

  • LAUSD school holiday / Columbus Day weekend – October 9 – 13, 2008. The “traditional” track schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as public schools throughout California, are closed on Thursday, October 9, and many other schools schedule “Fall Break” around the long Columbus Day weekend. Disneyland Park will be open extended hours October 9 and 13, and larger-than-usual crowds should be expected the entire weekend.
  • 2008 UEA convention – October 16 & 17 (in Utah). Many Utah public schools close so teachers can attend the Utah Education Association convention, which creates a four-day weekend for the students. Expect the resort to be busy that weekend—some claim ‘UEA’ stands for ‘Utah Escapes to Anaheim.’

  Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you.   This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

The offer should be available at all Southern California Costco stores that currently sell Disneyland admission, but the vouchers may not have arrived in all locations yet. [A list of the 37 Costco locations within 50 miles of the Disneyland Resort is available on our MousePad discussion board (link), and we have noted which locations are confirmed to have these tickets available. If you are a Costco member and live near one of the stores that is not confirmed, please check the next time you’re there and then let us know so we can update the list.] There are no residency restrictions on this ticket, and it can be upgraded to a Deluxe with parking or Premium passport. Better still, the $50 gift card can be applied towards the cost of the upgrades, which nearly pays for the $59 parking option or drops the net cost of a Premium Annual Passport to just $339. Save $30 on a Deluxe Disneyland Resort Annual Passport – If you can’t take advantage of the Costco offer listed above, you can still receive a $30 discount on a Deluxe Disneyland Annual Passport by purchasing your pass online. The offer is valid only on new purchases, and does not apply to renewals. The offer expires 12/31/08. These tickets must be purchased using a special Web site: disneyland.com/deluxeoffer. This offer was sent by mail to some Southern California residents, but there were no residency restrictions listed. Some readers who live outside Southern California initially reported that they were unable to purchase the tickets, but this error seems to have been fixed. This offer can not be combined with any othe promotional offer.

  Hotel / Travel Packages

  Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

  Disney’s Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accomodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It’s Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day – one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush.   Other Discounts

  Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.

  Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip.   ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)

  AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.

  Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
