Tokyo Disney Resort closes following earthquake; Disney Wonder modifies itinerary; Aulani reports no damage

As many as 70,000 people were reported to be visiting the Tokyo Disney Resort when a magnitude 8.9 earthquake rocked Japan last Friday. Officials closed the park following the quake, and thousands of park visitors spent Friday night in the Disney theme parks after Japanese officials issued an order to “shelter in place” due to transportation disruptions.
With no official word from the Disney company in the hours following the quake, social media sites like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook were the best source of current information.
Twitter users Riza Ikram (@rezaikram), Jarrod Lentz (@JarrodLentz, an American cast member who had just moved to Japan a week earlier to take a job at the Tokyo Disney Resort), and vacationing New York Post travel editor David Landsel (@davidlandsel) posted updates throughout the night, with Ikram and Landsel repeatedly praising the Disney cast members for their calm handling of the disaster. Imagineer Steven Davison was also at the Tokyo Resort during the quake, and sent a Facebook message to his friends saying that guests were safe and that the parks had closed.
YouTube user bounonushi posted this video taken at Tokyo Disneyland during and immediately after the earthquake. You can see the reaction of cast members and guests, and hear the pre-recorded English-language announcement instructing guests to move away from buildings and into open areas.
Some guests were able to take shelter in restaurants, gift shops, and attraction queues that were deemed safe by park managers, but many spent the night outdoors in near-freezing weather. Ikram, who from photos appeared to be in Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, said that cast members issued rain jackets, plastic bags, hand warmers, and food to park guests. Landsel spent the night in the Cafe Portofino outside Tokyo Disney Sea, and said cast members passed out snacks during the night and served a hot breakfast Saturday morning.
False rumors had quickly spread on Twitter that Tokyo Disney Sea had “flooded” or was “underwater,” but photos and accounts from people actually there showed that the worst damage was caused by liquefaction in the parking lots of the Tokyo Disney Resort, and both theme parks reportedly had gas, water, and electricity following the quake.
YouTube user x3mendo, posted a video showing guests in the Tower of Terror queue during the quake, and sheltering outside the ride overnight.
About 12 hours after the quake, the Orlando Sentinel reported that the Tokyo Disney Resort would remain closed Saturday, and posted a statement from Oriental Land Company, operator of the Tokyo Disney Resort, that read in part, “As of now, we have not confirmed any injuries among our guests or cast members.” Several hours later, the Disney Parks Blog posted an update that read, in part, “Fortunately our team on the ground has reported only minor injuries and minimal property damage at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea.” The post went on to say, “Cast members at the Tokyo Disney Resort are also providing humanitarian aid in the form of blankets, food and water for guests who are still at the resort due to the transportation challenges associated with the earthquake.”
Most guests were able to begin their journeys home on Saturday morning as train service resumed, but several thousand reportedly spent a second night at the resort as they waited for additional train lines to resume operation. Later the same day, the Tokyo Disney Resort officially announced on its Japanese Web site that the resort would remain closed through at least Monday, March 21.
YouTube user bloisyjenkins shared an English-captioned video of the scene in Tomorrowland after the quake. In the video, cast members distribute plastic bags and cardboard to guests to help protect against the rain, wind and cold until they can allow people to take shelter inside one of the buildings deemed to be safe.
With earthquake-triggered tsunami warnings for Hawaii, California, and Mexico, the Disney Wonder cruise ship skipped a scheduled stop in Cabo San Lucas after the port closed to cruise ships Friday, instead spending the day at sea. The Wonder returned to Los Angeles as scheduled Sunday morning, and left again Sunday afternoon for its scheduled Mexican Rivera cruise, with no announcements regarding further itinerary changes.
Disney’s Aulani Resort, still under construction in Hawaii and not yet opened to the public, reported no damage.

Pirates 4 premiere at Disneyland
Although there is still no official confirmation from Disney, we suspect that a change to the published park hours for the weekend of May 6–8 indicate that the rumors that premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is being held at Disneyland on Saturday, May 7 are true. Disney revised the already posted park hours for Friday, May 6 to reflect an 11:00 p.m. closing time, an hour earlier than the midnight closure previously posted on the Disneyland.com Web site, and lists Disneyland park hours as 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Disney California Adventure is now scheduled to remain open until 11:00 p.m. that night, an hour later than usual for a Saturday.
Disney held the premiere for the first three Pirates films at Disneyland in 2003, 2006, and 2007, with the film’s stars, Disney notables, sports figures, and a collection of Hollywood celebrities walking the red carpet down Main Street, U.S.A. in front of adoring fans. Disneyland closed early each time for the event, though fans were allowed to remain in some areas of the park after the posted closing times to watch the red carpet arrivals or enjoy rides in lands not impacted by the screening.
While the Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man’s Chest premiere screenings were invitation-only events, the premiere for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End featured an opportunity for fans to purchase tickets for $1500 as a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As Disney still won’t confirm that the premiere will be held at Disneyland on May 7, (even cast members are being told only that the park is closing early for a “special event”), we naturally have no idea if there will be a similar ticket opportunity this time around.
As with past events, expect there to be very little in the way of detailed official information about how best to view the red carpet arrivals. Disney is traditionally loathe to disclose specific plans for these types of events, as they prefer not to encourage people to come down just to stand on Main Street all day. If you’re committed to watching the celebrity arrivals, plan to arrive before Disneyland opens at 7:00 a.m., grab a spot along the railings that will likely be erected down Main Street, and prepare to spend the entire day there. As we receive any firm information about the premiere, we’ll share it on our MousePad discussion thread about the event, and publish it in future Updates.

Mermaid unwrapped
Disney took the wraps off the Little Mermaid attraction building in DCA last week, giving us the first unobstructed view of the gorgeous new structure. While there is a still quite a lot of work to be done before the construction walls come down, you can get a much better sense now of how the building changes the whole Paradise Park area. The ride is still scheduled to open to the public on June 3.

The Disney Parks Blog shared this video of the new animatronic Ursula figure being installed inside the attraction. According to the blog, Ursula is 7 ½ feet tall and 12 feet wide, and is covered with stretch velvet and flexible rubber.
Disneyland Half Marathon sells out
MousePlanet reader Mommy2NicknMax alerted us Wednesday that registration for the sixth annual Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend was 93% full, and then posted an update Thursday morning that registration had jumped to 97%. Less than 10 hours later the event was completely sold out.
If you missed your chance to register, you can join the wait list at the Run Disney Web site. Disney says the wait list will operate until July 1, after which all unfulfilled requests will be canceled. You may also be able to register through one of the runDisney Official Charity Groups with a donation ranging from $200 to $500, depending on the organization, or a fundraising pledge of $600 to $1200.
Resort construction update
As Disney California Adventure prepares to debut a new ride in less than 3 months, work continues on that park’s new main entrance structure. We’ve heard that the new gates are expected to open by August 29, and that the next phase of the Sunshine Plaza redevelopment project will begin immediately after Labor Day. Once that happens, the entire front portion of DCA will be closed to guests, with alternate routes leading guests from the new gates through a backstage route to enter the park next to Soarin’ Over California. New construction walls have already appeared along the parade route leading from the Sunshine Plaza towards a bug’s land, further narrowing the walkways.

MousePlanet reader Aaron Kumnick sent in two great photos of the Disneyland Hotel construction site, taken from his room in the Magic tower during a recent stay. The support structure for the new Monorail water slide is visible, as is the new bridge that will provide pedestrian access across the expanded pool area. He also tells us that the top four floors of the Magic tower are still being rented to guests while the remaining floors are refurbished.

…Southwest Airlines is hosting a Dream Suite Getaway contest with a grand prize of airfare, rental car, park admission, and a one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite for four people, plus two additional nights at the Disneyland Hotel and a $500 Disney gift card. The contest ends March 31, 2011 and travel must take place October 14–17, 2011.
…If you’d like to take a TransAtlantic cruise for as little as $57 per night, now is the time to book. The 14-night eastbound repositioning cruise of the Disney Magic is offering eight days at sea and stops at Castaway Cay; Madeira, Portugal; Cadiz, Spain; Gibraltar, U.K.; and Barcelona Spain for just $799 per person based on double occupancy for an inside stateroom with restrictions. …We reported last week that footwear retailer Sanuk will return to Downtown Disney later this month with a new permanent store in the space formerly occupied by Basin. The Disney Parks Blog announced Monday that BLINK, “a denim-focused pop-up concept owned by Wet Seal,” also opens this spring. The blog did not give a specific location, but with the Anne Geddes store closing earlier this month, that’s the likely spot for this temporary “pop-up” store.
…Walt Disney World announced last week that, ending a 40 year tradition, 2011 will be the last year for that resort’s Grad Nite event, saying that “it’s become challenging to schedule special events during April and May.” The Disney Parks Blog says that there are no changes to end the Disneyland version.
…The Disney Vacation Club has a new flying saucer-shaped booth in Tomorrowland. Some have complained that the DVC booths in California are too generic compared to the Walt Disney World booths, and it seems that DVC is taking steps to make their sales displays more attractive to visitors.

…Disneyland’s Critter Country reopened Friday following a six-week closure that Disneyland said would “allow refresh work to take place that was originally scheduled for later in the year.” Cast members told us that one of the projects would be the construction of a new, Photopass-friendly, meet-and-greet area for the Winnie-the-Pooh characters, and we were looking forward to seeing the new area this weekend. However, it appears that this new meet-and-greet was either just a rumor or was delayed for the future, and Pooh and friends were back greeting fans in their usual spot. A cast member at the Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh attraction said some trees around the attraction had been cut back or removed entirely, but that no work had been done to that ride itself during the downtime. “We were hoping to get a little paint or something, but there’s nothing.” The Hungry Bear restaurant is expected to reopen March 18, and Splash Mountain will remain closed through May 26 for refurbishment.

…TripAdvisor.com named Anaheim, California as the top U.S. Amusement Park Destination in its inaugural 2011 Travelers’ Choice Family awards. The rankings were based on the number and score of reviews posted to TripAdvisor.com. Orlando, Florida took the fourth spot in the rankings.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

- Lost Bar, Croc’s Bits ‘n’ Bites, Hook’s Pointe and the Wine Cellar – closed. These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the ongoing Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Resident 2-Day 1-Park per Day ticket ($99) – The Resident 2-Day 1-Park per Day ticket offers Southern California residents (ZIP Codes 90000–93599) and Northern Baja California residents (ZIP Codes 21000–22999) two one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure before May 14. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. This base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $10 per person, you can upgrade the ticket to a Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day, a savings of up to $52 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second admission, but the ticket must be purchased by April 15 and the ticket expires May 14. There are no blockout dates for this ticket. The ticket can be purchased online at Disneyland.com and printed from home for immediate use, and is also available at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase the ticket at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. Keep in mind that Disney states “proof of residency required for purchase and admission,” but MousePlanet readers who purchased these tickets from off-property retailers last year consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether this will happen to you is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but we feel it would be irresponsible for us to not at least make our readers aware of the “official” policy, regardless of what the park’s actual practice may be. *Now for the fine print: Tickets valid for Southern California residents within ZIP codes 90000-93599 and Northern Baja California residents within ZIP codes 21000-22999. Proof of residency required for purchase and admission. The Resident 2-Day 1-Park per Day Ticket entitles Guests to admittance to either Disneyland® Park or Disney California Adventure™ Park each day for two days. Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Resort Web site or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco.com at a cost of $259.99/$209.99, which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. Hotel/Travel Packages
Spring discount offers – In addition to the Promotional Park Hopper bonus tickets listed above, the Disneyland Resort released two hotel discounts for Spring 2011. We definitely recommend comparing prices on these offers before you buy, as it may be less-expensive to book the hotel and ticket separately.
Room-only hotel discounts
The Resort is offering discounts of up to 35 percent on select Disneyland Resort Hotel stays for arrivals January 2 through April 13. Travel must be booked by February 19, and a two-night minimum stay is required. Offer is not valid January 14 & 15, or February 18 & 19. Discount applies only to standard and concierge level rooms. There is a limit of two rooms per reservation, and a maximum of five people per room.
4th night free
Book a three-night, four-day package at a Disneyland Resort Hotel and get a fourth night free. Package includes four nights at a Disneyland Resort Hotel and four-day park hopper bonus tickets for a family of four. This offer is valid for arrivals from January 4 through April 11; travel must be completed by April 15. This package also includes one collectible pin, lanyard and luggage tag per person; one $20 ESPN Zone game card per package, admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, preferred seating at select shows in DCA, and a “character call” from a Disney character.

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online at ESPNZone.com and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required.
