RunDisney announces Tinker Bell half-marathon
As we reported in a heads-up last week, RunDisney has announced its brand new, women-focused Tinker Bell Half Marathon, the first of which is scheduled for January 29, 2012 in Disneyland.
Television star Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement), City of Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, and Disney Vice President Mary Niven were on hand last week when runDisney announced their newest Disneyland Resort race. Stephanie Wien shares some of the race details in her MousePlanet blog:
Tinker Bell Half Marathon to be held at Disneyland on January 29, 2012. The race is focused around women, to parallel the success of the Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World. According to Faron Kelley, director of marketing for Disney sports attractions, women are the fastest growing segment of runners, and the greatest demand for races is in the half marathon distance.
The course deviates from the previous Disneyland half-marathon course, starting out through Disneyland then turning north into downtown Anaheim rather than east toward the baseball stadium. The last few miles take the runners past Gardenwalk and into Disney California Adventure park, where they “experience the glitz and glamor of the Park’s Hollywood Boulevard and glistening Paradise Bay,” before finishing outside of the Paradise Pier Hotel. On paper, the route seems more appealing to me, with less industrial wasteland and more residential streets up near Downtown Anaheim.
Runners will receive a Tinker Bell “wings” medal, and hopefully we won’t have a bunch of strange clues before they reveal the design. Runners who finish the Tinker Bell half will be eligible for a Coast to Coast medal. This year the rules on that have changed, and any runner who completes a half or full marathon at Walt Disney World (marathon weekend, Princess half or Wine and Dine half) and a half marathon at Disneyland (Tinker Bell or original) within the same calendar year will receive a Coast to Coast, but runners may only earn one per year.

The Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend will also feature a Neverland Family Fun Run 5K and Disney Kids’ Races on Saturday, and a health and fitness expo also “tailored for women.” Registration for all events is now open via the runDisney website. The half marathon fee is $120 per person, with a $10 price increase scheduled to take place on June 12, 2011, and again on Sept. 11, 2011, assuming the event has not sold out by then. The Disneyland half marathon sold out in 9 weeks.

An estimated 10,000 participants are expected to register for the inaugural Tinker Bell half marathon, and awards will be issued to the top women finishers in over a dozen categories, including overall, wheelchair, military and age group. The Tinker Bell half marathon also features a team competition, with prizes going to the top mother/daughter, sister/sister, open division or co-ed teams. In fact, this co-ed team category is the only award a male athlete can earn in this race, and that has some readers upset.
Shortly after the race was announced last week, MousePlanet reader David Valentine wrote us to say, “As a male that has run the WDW full, half, Disneyland half, WDW Wine and Dine half, Tower of Terror 13k, and over 14 other half marathons, I and many others wonder why Disney wants to exclude male runners. Why not have an exclusive Pirates, Haunted Mansion, or other themed race? Why have another gender biased race so close to the Princess half at WDW?” Similar complaints were posted by male runners on the runDisney Facebook page following the announcement.

Disney is very up front that this race is a “new half marathon for women,” and describes the event as “a magical weekend especially for Fairies and Princesses.” All participants, male and female alike, receive a women’s tech shirt—there is no option for a men’s shirt. Disney has not said how they will handle corral assignments for this race, but based on Walt Disney World’s Princess half-marathon, it is expected that Disney will reserve the first (or A) corral for women, assigning the fastest men to start in the B or C corral to help ensure that the first person to cross the finish line is female.
While this race is women-focused, it’s not an all-women event, as is the Danskin Triathlon that will be held in Walt Disney World next month. Men are allowed to enter, and Facebook member Erich Haeger is even encouraging men to register and run the event in pirate gear, so that “RunDisney organizers can visually see that we like to join in the fun as well.”
Disney extends military discount offer through 2012
The Disneyland Resort currently offers active and retired U.S. military personnel a 40 percent discount on Disneyland Resort hotel rooms and 3-day park hopper ticket for $99. The discount was set to expire September 28, 2011, but last week Disney announced that military discounts at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World would be extended through September 2012, though specific details have yet to be released. The news of the discount extension comes as the Walt Disney Company announced their participation in Joining Forces, “an initiative created by the Obama Administration designed to bring attention to the unique needs of America’s military families.”
Star Tours: The Countdown Continues
As the countdown continues towards the debut of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, Disney is releasing additional images of souvenir merchandise for the revamped ride. The Disney Parks Blog posted a few images last week, and even more are available on the Disney Gallery website. StarWars.com has even more photos, including pictures of some of the new pins.

Free souvenirs are rare, but Disney is giving you the opportunity to create your own Official Star Tours Galactic Passport to keep track of each of the six new Star Tours destinations as you visit them. Go to startourspassport.com and choose one of four themes, including Pod Racer, Queen, Rebel Pilot and Jedi, then personalize it by uploading your own photo. You can post the finished passport to your Facebook wall, and print it out to take with you to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where you can have it stamped at the attraction exit. Right now the passport is branded with the Walt Disney World logo, and we don’t yet know if Disneyland will also offer passport stamps.

Costco offers discount for SoCal residents
Costco is repeating last year’s discount offer for Southern California residents, and we again want to caution you to read the fine print before you buy to make sure this ticket is really a deal for your specific situation. The 4-day park hopper ticket is $199, and is valid through August 31, 2011. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you could use the first entry this week, and your remaining dates later this summer. The ticket is blocked out July 1-4, and August 21-22. The ticket does not include Magic Morning entry, but does come with a $50 Disney gift card.
The advance-purchase price of a 4-day Park Hopper is $201 when purchased through the Disneyland website, so if that’s the ticket you were already planning to purchase, and the blockout dates don’t interfere with your travel plans, the $50 gift card is a nice incentive to purchase this ticket. But, if you had thoughts of using the Costco ticket to upgrade to a longer-term Park Hopper ticket or to an Annual Passport, think again. While Costco will charge you $199 for the ticket, its “upgrade value” is only $151. If you upgrade to another pass or an AP, you pay the full difference. Suddenly your “free” $50 gift card isn’t so free, and you’ll only save a total of $2 when you upgrade.
If you plan to use up the ticket before August 31, 2011 and want more than four days at the Resort, consider purchasing the “5-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket” for $211, or the “6-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket” for $216 from Disneyland.com. You won’t receive the $50 gift card, but you’ll get an additional one or two days at Disneyland for just a little more money, as well as Magic Morning access.

…Disneyland taped a commercial for the new Mickey’s Soundsational Parade last Friday during park hours, and visitors were able to get a look at the parade floats. The parade officially debuts Friday, May 27.
…150 Disneyland fans and their guest will have the opportunity to attend a panel discussion with Walt Disney Imagineers Lisa Girolami, Larry Nikolai, and Chris Crump, and Walt Disney animators Andreas Deja and Mark Henn as they talk about the new The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure ride during a Disney Parks Blog meet-up on May 10. Enter via the event website by 11:59 p.m. (PDT), April 28, 2011. The event is held at the Grand Californian Hotel, and does not include a ride on the new mermaid attraction, which is not scheduled to open until June 3.

- Lost Bar, Croc’s Bits ‘n’ Bites, Hook’s Pointe and the Wine Cellar – closed. These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the ongoing Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28 and used by October 1. The ticket has the following 2011 blockout dates: February 18–21; April 17–23; and July 1–4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket offers four days of admission until August 31, 2011. The ticket is available online and in select Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until August 31 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out July 1-4 and August 21-22, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Resort website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass website though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney website if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco.com at a cost of $259.99/$209.99, which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. Hotel/Travel Packages
Spring discount offers – In addition to the Promotional Park Hopper bonus tickets listed above, the Disneyland Resort released two hotel discounts for Spring 2011. We definitely recommend comparing prices on these offers before you buy, as it may be less-expensive to book the hotel and ticket separately.
Room-only hotel discounts – The Resort is offering discounts of up to 35 percent on select Disneyland Resort Hotel stays for arrivals January 2 through April 13. Travel must be booked by February 19, and a two-night minimum stay is required. Offer is not valid January 14 & 15, or February 18 & 19. Discount applies only to standard and concierge level rooms. There is a limit of two rooms per reservation, and a maximum of five people per room.
4th night free – Book a three-night, four-day package at a Disneyland Resort Hotel and get a fourth night free. Package includes four nights at a Disneyland Resort Hotel and four-day park hopper bonus tickets for a family of four. This offer is valid for arrivals from January 4 through April 11; travel must be completed by April 15. This package also includes one collectible pin, lanyard and luggage tag per person; one $20 ESPN Zone game card per package, admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, preferred seating at select shows in DCA, and a “character call” from a Disney character.

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Other Discounts
Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online at ESPNZone.com and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks.
