Soundsational Summer begins | Star Tours now offering daily service from Disneyland | Jodi Benson at opening for The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure | Flash mob “interrupts” Mickey's Soundsational parade | What's Next at the Disneyland Resort | Remembering two Disney Legends | Crowd Forecast
Soundsational Summer begins
The Disneyland Resort kicked off its Soundsational Summer promotion last week during a two-day media event, which featured the grand openings of the new Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure attraction and revamped Star Tours attraction, the 3D Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, as well as a performances of the new Mickey's Soundsational Parade, tours of the new pool at water play areas at the Disneyland Hotel, a “what's next” presentation with updates on Cars Land, Disney's new Aulani Resort, and plans for the Disney Cruise Line in 2012.
While the summer marketing campaign has officially begun, there are still a few more transition weeks until the summer schedule starts. Southern California Select passholder have four more days—June 6, 7, 13 and 14—to visit before the summer blockout period begins and they are blocked out for the summer until August 22, while Southern California passholders have a few extra opportunities to visit before their summer blockout period begins on June 22. It's graduation season for most local schools, which means groups of elementary and middle schoolers are common during the day, and there are still three more after-hours grad nights on the calendar. All of this means the parks may be more crowded than you might expect if you visit on a week day during the next two weeks.
The school crowds will be gone and AP blockouts will be in effect by the time Goofy's Sky School and the rest of Paradise Pier open on July 1, and then it's full steam ahead through to Labor Day and the beginning of the next phase of construction at Disney California Adventure.
Star Tours now offering daily service from Disneyland
When Star Tours – The Adventures Continue opened at Walt Disney World two weeks ago, managers at Disney Hollywood Studios anticipated five-hour lines, but while Star Tours 3D drew impressive crowds, it was not enough to fill the overflow queue that had been set up in the Streets of America area.
Eight-hundred visitors who waited overnight to be first to ride Star Tours are at the front of the line outside the Plaza Inn, with an overflow queue marked on Main Street, U.S.A. to handle the crowds waiting for the park to open. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Disneyland was also prepared for large crowds, and every foot of the extended queue was used, if only briefly, on opening day. In a refreshing change, the park also had a plan for accommodating those fans who were willing to wait overnight to be among the first to ride after the opening ceremony. About 800 people who had arrived as early as 10:00 the prior evening were escorted into Disneyland before park opening Friday morning, and organized into a line in front of the Plaza Inn. When the park opened at 9:00 a.m., newly arriving visitors were directed into lanes marked by florescent tape on Main Street, U.S.A.
Shortly after the newly reopened Star Tours ride opened, the wait was reported to be nearly five hours long. Photo by Jeff Moxley.
Outside the freshly painted Star Tours building, the stage was set for the opening ceremony. As Stormtroopers stood watch from the Rocket Rods track, Darth Vader and a “Jedi Master” dueled for the final seat on flight 6311 to Tatooine. After Lord Vader was defeated, the Jedi Master was revealed to be Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs, who used his light saber to cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Due to the opening ceremony Star Tours was not scheduled to open until after 10am, and the wait time was estimated to be as high as five hours by the time the first riders boarded the first Starspeeder. At maximum capacity Star Tours can handle about 1450 riders an hour, and by noon the wait had reportedly decreased to under three hours, though the wait board displayed an estimate of 240 minutes. By 1:30 the line was reported to be 110 minutes.
The crowds returned Friday night and over the weekend, with the Star Tours 3D line reportedly as long as four hours at times, and photos of gridlock in Tomorrowland posted to online photo sharing sites. Henry Work from TouringPlans.com tells MousePlanet that users of their Lines mobile wait times app reported that Fastpass tickets for Star Tours – The Adventures Continue were fully distributed by 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Jodi Benson at opening for The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure
As we reported last week, Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in the The Little Mermaid, performed at Disney California Adventure park Thursday afternoon during the dedication ceremony for The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure, a new attraction based on the 1989 movie. Benson was joined onstage by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs; Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken; and Sherie Rene Scott, who originated the role of Ursula in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid. Pat Carroll, who voiced Ursula for the animated feature, also attended the ceremony.

Flash mob “interrupts” Mickey's Soundsational parade
When Mickey's Soundsational parade debuted on May 26, only a handful of local media were present, so the larger pool of national media in town for the Soundsational Summer media event last week were invited to see the new production Thursday afternoon after the Little Mermaid opening ceremony. Senior show director John Addis' introduction was “interrupted” by a flash mob of Disney cast members, who took to the street just before the parade arrived in Town Square. Note: The flash-mob opening is not part of the normal parade, so you won't see it on your next visit to Disneyland.

What's Next at the Disneyland Resort
Big media events at the Disneyland Resort traditionally end with a “what's next” presentation that looks at things to come.
Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis opened the presentation with a brief preview of the changes coming soon to Disney California Adventure, including Goofy's Sky School, two new Paradise Pier restaurants, and the new entrance plaza. The presentation included an early computer rendering of the planned new entrance, with a virtual fly-through along Buena Vista Street.

Kathy Mangum, Vice President and Executive Producer, and Kevin Rafferty, Senior Concept Writer/Director, from Walt Disney Imagineering presented an update on the construction of Cars Land, with the assistance of a camera located on the Tower of Terror building. From this unique angle, the pair described each of the new rides, shops and dining locations, and gave additional story and theme details about the land.
Most materials about Cars Land says that the land is “coming in 2012,” but a spokesperson for Walt Disney Imagineering told MousePlanet that they are now committing to “Summer 2012.” It may seem a minor distinction, but it means that resort visitors may get their first look at Radiator Springs Racers before Labor Day 2012.

What's Next for Disney Cruise Line, and a preview of Disney's Aulani Resort
Disney used the presentation to give updates on new destinations and itineraries for the Disney Cruise Line, and a preview of Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii.
The Disney Cruise Line presentation by Al Weiss, President of Worldwide Operations for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, contained information about destinations and itineraries previously announced at a press event in April, and also details about the new Disney Fantasy that were released at a media event in Walt Disney World last month. While the details themselves aren't new, the video is worth a look because it contains images and illustrations from the Fantasy, including the new Animation Magic show that will replace Turtle Talk with Crush in that ship's Animator's Palate restaurant.

Imagineer Joe Rohde gave an energetic preview of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii, with photos and videos from the new resort. Rohde, a California native who was raised in Hawaii, seems truly passionate about the project, and his description of the resort's theme and detailing will probably have you calling your travel agent before the video is done.

Remembering two Disney Legends
The characters they portrayed shared the stage at Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe for thousands of performances, so it was especially poignant that Wally Boag and Betty Taylor would share one last headline, as news of their deaths–less than 24 hours apart–spread through the Disney community this weekend. Boag, the original Pecos Bill in the Golden Horseshoe Revue, died Friday at the age of 90. Betty Taylor, the original Slue Foot Sue in the classic Disneyland show, passed away Saturday at the age of 91.

Comedian Steve Martin eulogized Boag in a Twitter posting, saying “My hero, the first comedian I ever saw live, my influence, a man to whom I aspired, has passed on. Wally Boag.”

Disneyland Resort president George Kalogridis responded to the news saying, “The world’s stage has experienced a great loss in the passing of Disney Legend Wally Boag. Wally was instrumental in the development of live entertainment during the early years of both Disneyland Park and Walt Disney World Resort. His characters will continue to live in the hearts of our guests, while his larger-than-life personality will forever make him the true ‘Clown Prince of Disneyland.’ ”

After learning of Taylor's passing, Kalogridis said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a second Disney Legend in just two days—Betty Taylor. Betty’s role as leading lady in Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe Revue helped turn it into the longest-running stage show in entertainment history. It is a tragic coincidence that her passing comes just one day after the death of longtime co-star Wally Boag.”

While Boag may be best known to Disney fans for the role of Pecos Bill, he also provided the voice for the parrot Jose in The Enchanted Tiki Room, and performed in Walt Disney World's Diamond Horseshoe Revue when that park opened in 1971. According to his official Disney biography, Boag “quickly became one of Walt's favorite comedic actors,” and made appearances on the original Mickey Mouse Club, Disneyland, and Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, and The Muppet Show. Boag also appeared in The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and The Love Bug. Even after he retired in 1982, he visited Tokyo Disneyland to help translate scripts for that park, and was a frequent guest at Disney fan club conventions and events.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
3-Day So Cal Resident Ticket ($139) and 3-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper ($154) – The 2011 3-Day So Cal resident discount ticket is $139, $31 more expensive than the 2010 version, and offers Southern California residents three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. This base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $15 per person, you can upgrade to a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. The ticket goes on sale June 3, and is valid through September 5, 2011, but is blocked out July 2-4 and August 21-22. The ticket has a 45-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 45 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28 and used by October 1. The ticket has the following 2011 blockout dates: February 18–21; April 17–23; and July 1–4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($186/$165) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is available online and in select Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until August 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out July 1-4, 2011 and August 21-22, 2011. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $151 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($201/$178) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $15/day value). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
