Higher prices and new ticket options at the Disneyland Resort
A week after a big international media celebration for the grand opening of the new Little Mermaid ride and the newly re-imagined Star Tours 3D attraction, the Disneyland Resort quietly announced last Friday that ticket prices are going up again. For the past several years the annual price increase has come in July or August, but the two new attractions and new parade may have prompted an earlier price hike.
A one-day ticket to Disneyland now costs $80 for adults (a $4 increase) and $74 for children ages 3-10 (a $6 increase). Prices are up 5% – 15% across the board, with the biggest increase on children's tickets and annual passports. 2-day tickets are just slightly less expensive than purchasing two one-day tickets, and the incremental discounts don't really kick in until you purchase a 4- or 5-day ticket.

The new ticketing options also reflect a subtle move towards the “magic your way” model currently used at Walt Disney World. Where all Disneyland Resort tickets of three or more days previously included the option to “park hop” between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the new structure introduces a one-park-per-day ticket at every length of stay. Park hopper tickets are now $15-$25 more expensive, depending on length of stay.
While you may be resigned to the annual price increase, you don't have to pay full price for your next Disneyland tickets. Steep discounts are a myth, but you can easily save a few dollars by doing some research, planning ahead and perhaps adjusting your travel dates. Here are a few of the offers and options MousePlanet readers have shared on our MousePad discussion forums; an updated list is available every week in the Discounts and Promotions section of the Disneyland Resort Update:
- Look for “old” ticket inventory. AAA offices and authorized ticket resellers (like local grocery stores) may still have inventory of Disneyland tickets that were issued at the old prices, before the rate change took place. These sellers will usually continue to sell their older inventory at face value before moving on to the higher priced inventory. These tickets sell quickly after a price increase, so don't wait.
- Southern California residents can save $70 on a 3-Day So Cal Resident Ticket or 3-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper with the current summer discount offer.
- Reader Maus says that local grocery store chain Albertsons is offering a $20 credit when you purchase $100 in gift cards. She found and purchased annual pass vouchers at the old price and got the credit as well.
- Community Leader Malcon10t reminds readers to check with their local credit union for discounted tickets.
- Catcherman22 advises Annual Passholders who need to renew in the next 30 days to check the Disneyland.com website to see if you can renew at the lower price.
- Reader olegc points out that Southern California-resident Costco members can save almost $100 apiece on four-day park-hopper tickets by purchasing online or in select Costco stores (the $199 ticket includes a $50 Disney gift card, which drops the effective price of the ticket to $149). Costco memberships start at $50, which is easily recovered if you need more than one ticket.
- mrsdisney68 notes that active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses (including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard) can still purchase the Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket for $99. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths with proper identification.
If none of these offers work for your situation, you can still save $15-$25 on most multi-day tickets by simply buying your tickets online and printing them from home before you get into your car to drive to Anaheim. Advance purchase tickets can be purchased and printed from Disneyland.com the same day you plan to use them, using Disney's Ticket service. Even if you don't have a printer, you can buy online and pick up the ticket at the Disneyland Will Call window for a $5 fee, which still saves you money.
The one thing you don't want to do is show up at the Disneyland ticket booths without a ticket, because then you will pay the highest prices. Plan ahead and buy in advance to save the most money.
If the most recent price hike have you seeking alternative ways of saving money, a recent incident in Northern California should provide a cautionary tale. As reported by KTVU, a woman was arrested this weekend for selling invalid Disneyland tickets via Craigslist. The buyers did not discover the scam until they tried to use their tickets at Disneyland and were turned away. Six victims are confirmed, and police are looking for others who may have purchased the bogus tickets.
New annual pass pricing, perks and payment options
The price of all five Disneyland Resort annual passes went up in this latest price hike, with the largest increase applied to the Deluxe Annual Pass, which went up $50 (or 15%) to $379. This year also marked the first increase for the Premier Passport, valid at both the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort, which jumped from $700 to $749.
Southern California Select Annual Pass: $199, all ages ($15 increase).
Southern California Annual Pass: $269 for all ages ($30 increase).
Deluxe Annual Pass: $379 for all ages ($50 increase).
Premium Annual Pass: $499 for all ages ($40 increase).
Premier Annual Pass: $749 for all ages ($49 increase).
Annual Passholder “block out” ticket: $59 ($9 increase).
Northern California passholders got a bit of good news along with their price hike – they are now eligible for the monthly payment plan which allows passholders the opportunity to fiance their Annual Passports over 12 months. Passholders make a deposit equal to the cost of a one-day, one-park ticket, then pay the balance over 12 months. Payments are automatically charged to a credit card placed on file at the time the passport is purchased. When the plan was introduced in 2008 it was offered only to residents of Southern California, much to the frustration of northern California passholders.
The Annual Passholder page also shows that all passes – not just the premium and premier passes – are eligible for merchandise discounts at select locations. These discounts were offered to the Southern California and Deluxe passholders as part of a holiday promotion in 2009, and have been extended several times. The current extension is now through January, 2012, and several people have speculated that Disney will just make the discounts permanent.
ElecTRONica extended, again
The lights will remain on at Flynn's Arcade for another 11 months or so, as Disney announced last week that ElecTRONica has been extended through Spring, 2012. The after-dark event held weekends at Disney California Adventure includes dancing, live DJs and a recreation of Flynn's Arcade from the Tron movies, along with a 3D “preview” of Tron: Legacy, which had not yet been released when ElecTRONica started last year, but is now available on DVD.
Disney also announced that an all-new Laserman show will debut Friday, June 17 at ElecTRONica.
Disneyland Hotel towers to be renamed this week

Now that we've all finally gotten used to the new names for the Disneyland Hotel buildings, they're changing again. Effective Friday, Disney will start referring to the three towers by their newer names. The Magic tower (the main building) will now be known as the Fantasy Tower. The Dreams tower (nearest Downtown Disney) is now the Adventure tower. The Wonder tower (on the south end of the property) is now the Frontier tower. The Frontier tower already received a themed overlay during the recent construction, with Frontierland attraction posters used as wallpaper, and a model of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad prominently displayed in the lobby.

Disney suggests this short phrase to help cast members – and bewildered visitors – remember the new names: “Every Disney vacation begins with a Fantasy leading to a daring Adventure before you can reach the new Frontier.” That may help – at least until they change the names again. Many of the hotel ballrooms will be renamed as part of this conversion, so be prepared if you're attending an event at the hotel in the next few months. The rooms in the new Adventure tower all have appropriate names like “Nile” and “Outpost,” while the meeting rooms in the Frontier tower are named “Mark Twain and “Pioneer.”

Resort construction update
A new set of construction walls went up inside the entrance of Disney California Adventure this weekend. The corridor to the west of the hub (where the sun icon used to be, and where the Carthay Circle Theater is now under construction) is now closed between Condor Flats and A Bug's Land. This means that as you enter DCA you can go left into Hollywood or right into Condor Flats, but you can no longer go straight back to the Pacific Wharf or A Bug's Land.
Engine-Ears Toys will close Monday, August 1 for renovation, and is not scheduled to reopen until May 2012. As of right now we do not have a schedule for the closure of the adjacent bakery and ice cream shop.

Back in Paradise Pier, testing continues on the vehicles for Goofy's Sky School. According to a cast member at the attraction, each vehicle must undergo more than 90 hours of testing before the ride can reopen. The ride is scheduled to open July 1st; the cast member said to look for “soft opening” previews about a week earlier than that.

The Paradise Pier restaurants are also scheduled to reopen July 1, and more of the decorative garden elements have been installed in the outdoor dining area. The new beer stand is already outfitted with canopy, soda fountains and a pretzel warmer, and looks ready to open just as soon as the construction walls come down.

Cars Land is not scheduled to open for at least another year, but the Cadillac Range gets more impressive every week. A close look over the construction walls reveals details of some of the Cars Land buildings, including the very tips of the Cozy Cones—slated to be used as food service kiosks—and the tires atop Luigi's Casa della Tires, the facade for the new Flying Tires ride.

This and That…
…Several readers have asked if Star Tours is part of Magic Mornings at Disneyland. Star Tours did join the Magic Morning lineup when it reopened earlier this month, so Disneyland Resort Hotel guests and those with Magic Morning access on their tickets can experience the ride before the park opens to the general public on Magic Morning days (currently Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). Fastpass distribution does not begin until the park opens to the public, so your only option is to just get in line. Cast members tell us that the attraction's wait time often reaches 60 minutes during Magic Morning, so you may still be better off using your Magic Morning access to ride other attractions, and then go back to Star Tours right at opening to grab a Fastpass for a later time.
…The final Grad Night of the 2011 season will take place this Thursday. Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will both close early for the after-hours event, and Disneyland will open at 9am on Friday to allow for post-party clean up. Effective Saturday, both Disneyland and DCA begin their summer operation schedule, with Disneyland open 8am – midnight daily, and DCA open 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
…Apricot Lane is hosting a grand opening celebration Wednesday, June 15. Disneyland Resort annual passholders are invited to a private shopping hour at 9am Wednesday morning, and the store will open to the public at 10am. The first 100 people to spend $75 in the store will receive a VIP gift bag from Apricot Lane Boutique. Opening day specials include 20 percent off one item and complimentary lip treatments from Sara Happ cosmetics.
…Steiner, the company which operates the spas onboard all three Disney Cruise Line ships, is offering acupuncture services on the Magic, Wonder and Dream during a four-month test that began last week. During this test, acupuncture can be booked onboard at the spa reception desk—no online or advance booking is currently offered.
…Last month Disneyland sent out an alert to cast members advising that an animatronic elephant – the mother-in-law figure, for those familiar with Jungle Cruise jokes – would be removed from the Jungle Cruise via helicopter before park hours early one morning. The operation was postponed until last week, and Disney has posted video of the airlift on their You Tube channel.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

3-Day So Cal Resident Ticket ($139) and 3-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper ($154) – The 2011 3-Day So Cal resident discount ticket is $139, $31 more expensive than the 2010 version, and offers Southern California residents three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. This base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $15 per person, you can upgrade to a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. The ticket is valid June 3 through September 5, 2011, but is blocked out July 2-4 and August 21-22. The ticket has a 45-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 45 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($199/$183) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Disneyland Web site (link). Ticket must be purchased between June 12 and October 1, 2011, and is not available for purchase at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Ticket is valid beginning June 19, and first use must be on or before October 1, 2011. The ticket has a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). This ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ( $5-$25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Ticket may also be available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and participating travel agents. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28 and used by October 1. The ticket has the following 2011 blockout dates: February 18–21; April 17–23; and July 1–4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |

Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $234/$216 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $249/$231 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is available online and in select Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until August 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out July 1-4, 2011 and August 21-22, 2011. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $151 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($219/$201) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Disneyland Web site (link). Ticket must be purchased between June 12 and October 1, 2011, and is not available for purchase at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Ticket is valid beginning June 19, and first use must be on or before October 1, 2011. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and is valid through December 31, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Summer discount offers – The Disneyland Resort released a new hotel discount for Summer 2011.
Room-only hotel discounts
The Resort is offering discounts of up to 25 percent on select Disneyland Resort Hotel stays for arrivals June 19 through August 13, 2011. Travel must be booked by July 23, 2011, and a two-night minimum stay is required. Discount applies only to standard and concierge level rooms. There is a limit of two rooms per reservation, and a maximum of five people per room. Travel must be completed by Aug. 14, 2011.
The offer also includes two Fastpass tickets per person, per stay, and the fine-print reveals that Disney will be operating a “specially created, limited time Disney's Fastpass return line for The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure attraction” that will be available June 3 through September 11, 2011.

Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com (link). When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel (link).
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
