Even without any blockbuster announcements, Disney still revealed plenty of details about projects already known or rumored to be in the works during the D23 Expo it held this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center. On Friday, Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs hosted an overview of theme park projects around the world, including information about a just-announced expansion of Disneyland's Fantasyland (likely the biggest surprise for Disneyland fans), an update on Cars Land (currently under construction in Disney's California Adventure park), and a teaser about a few special experiences that Disneyland guests may see in the future.

On Saturday, Imagineers Ray Spencer, Lisa Girolami, and Coulter Winn presented a detailed look at the new Buena Vista Street entrance for Disney California Adventure. Sunday, John Lasseter joined Disney Imagineers for a presentation about Cars Land, sharing even more information than was given during Parks and Resorts presentation. That presentation was followed by a panel discussion about Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, where Imagineering Tom Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President and Senior Creative Executive, revealed new details about what it took to update the Disney attraction.

Below, I go into a bit more detail about the Fantasy Fair and Buena Vista Street presentations. The video above features highlights of the Radiator Springs Reality presentation; highlights of the Star Tours panel discussion will be published on MousePlanet later this week.
Fantasy Faire
Tom Staggs and Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis shared the stage for the Fantasy Faire portion of the Parks and Resorts presentation, and took turns revealing details of the new project. At the start of the announcement, Staggs said, “We're also pleased to announce that we're going to expand somewhat the boundaries of Fantasyland over at Disneyland with a brand new experience called Fantasy Faire. We're going to transform Carnation Plaza Garden into a storybook village, with a square where we invite guests of all ages to step into this fairy tale realm.”

Kalogridis shared a concept image of the new area. “Imagineering is hard at work on the design elements of Fantasy Faire,” he said. He cautioned that the renderings were early, but said, “[They will] give you an idea of just how charming and enchanting it's going to be. At the heart of Fantasy Faire is tangled tower. It's an iconic sculpture inspired by the film, and serves as a central gathering point for all.”
Staggs said, “Inside the Royal princess hall, a trio of Disney royalty will welcome guest and provide a truly personal visit. Not only will it be a beautiful place to capture photos, but it's also going to give families ample time to meet with their favorite princesses.”

Kalogridis said, “The Fantasy Faire stage will be an incredible new entertainment venue that will enable us to bring the stories and inspiring personalities of our fairy tale heroes and heroines to life, and to let our guests be part of the story too. Each morning, when the park opens, Princess Aurora will welcome her royal guests, and invite everyone to gather for a very special celebration. At various times throughout the day, families can join the royal ribbon festival with a Disney princess, and our royal court attendants, for dancing and celebration.”
Stagged reassured those who go to Carnation Garden Plaza for evening swing dances. He said, “At night, Fantasy Faire stage will still play host to the classic music and dance offerings our guests continue to love, so you swing dancers out there, don't worry.” Kalogridis said. “Fantasy Faire will feature new food and merchandise offerings, all themed to enhance this new fairy tale experience. Because we know this is the heart of the Disneyland park, Fantasy Fair will bring our classic characters and stories to life in a new, yet timeless way, and we can't wait, we're very excited.”

Beyond the renderings shown during the presentation, there were very few firm details about how the physical space would be transformed. The Carnation Plaza Gardens borders Frontierland, so some degree of transition will need to be maintained to keep the Wild West from encroaching on Once Upon a Time.
With the princesses moving out of the Fantasyland Theater, hopefully that venue can be renovated and once again used for a stage show.
A statue for Buena Vista Street
The focal point of Disneyland's Central Plaza hub is the Partners statue featuring Walt and Mickey, and now Imagineers have unveiled a statue for Disney California Adventure, featuring the duo a few years younger, when Walt first came to Hollywood.

The as-yet-unnamed, sculpture will serve as the centerpiece of the new entry plaza, and will be located near the Carthay Circle theater.

During Friday's Parks and Resorts presentation, Staggs also repeated remarks he made earlier this year, and said that the Carthy Circle Theater in DCA will feature a restaurant by Napa Rose chef Andrew Sutton.

New guest experiences
During the Parks and Resorts presentation, Staggs said that many park guests wanted a deeper, and more personal experience with the resort and with the attractions. He said, “We're working on a series of special experiences that will enable our guests to interact with their favorite attractions and characters in a whole new way.”
Kalogridis sparked the interest of many in the audience when he said, “Imagine having dinner in the Haunted Mansion with some of our Imagineers. Or sitting down at a tea party with your two favorite princesses.” Kalogridis got a big response from the crowd when he asked, “How about being able to step back in time to be able to experience a Disneyland attraction from yesteryear once again? Like being able to enjoy a Planter's Punch Tahitian in the Tahitian Terrace, or to be immersed in the pageantry and panorama of America the Beautiful in Circle Vision 360?”

No additional details were given, and some immediately began wondering where America the Beautiful could be rebuilt inside Disneyland, or how soon the Tahitian Terrace could reopen. Since these were described as special experiences, and not new or returning attractions, this would likely be a limited offering or a special event.
Staggs also surprised the audience by openly speaking about what used to be Disneyland's best kept secret, saying “You all know that Club 33 has a really, really long waiting list. So long, in fact, that we stopped adding names a couple of years ago. I challenged George and his team to come up with some means of expanding our club offering here at the Disneyland Resort. Now, we're in the early stages, but it's going well and it looks good, and we look forward to sharing more information on that expansion with you in 2012. Stay tuned.” Again, no additional details were offered.
Jolly Holiday Bakery Café
There was another announcement last week about an upcoming Disneyland project, but it didn't come out of the Expo. A few days before the Expo began, the official Disney Parks Blog confirmed what MousePlanet's David Koenig reported back in March, that the Blue Ribbon Bakery would move to the former Plaza Pavilion restaurant, and would feature a Mary Poppins theme. The new eatery is to be called the Jolly Holiday Bakery Café, which Disney says will feature “an expanded menu, as well as outdoor seating.”

Once the new bakery opens (projected for January, 2012), the Blue Ribbon Bakery will close and be converted back into an indoor seating area for the adjacent Carnation Cafe. That remodel is expected to last until summer 2012.
The Main Street makeover also calls for expansing the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor and the Candy Palace display kitchen. Both locations close in January, 2012, and reopen in spring. During that time, the Penny Arcade is also closing, though Disney assured fans that it will return (though probably a bit smaller—the new space for Gibson Girl and Candy Palace has to come from somewhere).
Did your family visit Disneyland during the Christmas season in 1977? Did you attend Grad Nite in 1978? If so, you may have something Pixar chief John Lasseter is looking for—a photograph of himself working as a skipper on the World Famous Jungle Cruise.

Lasseter began his Disney career working on the classic attraction, but never got a photograph of himself in the costume. Now Disney and Pixar have launched a nationwide search for someone, anyone, who snapped a photo of Lasseter “performing his duties” as a Jungle Cruise skipper. If you have it, you could win a trip to be a VIP at the grand opening of Cars Land in 2012, and a private Jungle Cruise ride with John Lasseter.
To help narrow down the search, Lasseter said that he was trained around Thanksgiving, 1977, and worked Holiday 1977, Easter 1978, Grad Nite 1978, and summer 1978. He said he plans to share a photo of himself at that age, so people have an idea of what they're looking for.

To warn off any would-be digital artists, Lasseter warned, “Pixar invented digital compositing. We know a fake when we see it. They don't count!”

Military discount extended into 2012
Reader DwarfPlanet alerted us that Disney's Military Salute offer has been extended through September 2012. The promotion, which began in 2010 and has already been extended, offers both active and retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses 3-day Disneyland park hopper tickets for $95.00. The offer has a limit of six tickets per eligible service member (or their spouse, but not both). If an eligible service member has already purchased their allotted six tickets, they now have another chance to purchase up to six more tickets before the end of the promotion.
Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reserves, and active or retired members of the Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012.
As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
This and That…
…RunDisney training consultant Jeff Galloway will be at The Running Lab in Orange (about 3 miles from Disneyland) on Tuesday, August 30 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. While not a Disney event, Galloway's talk comes just days before the 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon, and is an excellent opportunity for local runners and walkers to discuss training and fitness with the former Olympic athlete. … The Tinker Bell Half Marathon, scheduled for January 29, 2012, sold out last week. There is still space available in the Never Land Family Fun Run 5K and Disney Kids' Races. More information is available on the race website.
…AAA awarded the 2012 Four Diamond rating to the Disneyland Hotel earlier this month. The Grand Californian Hotel is also a AAA Four Diamond hotel, and the two Disney properties are the only Four Diamond hotels in Anaheim. According to the AAA website, the Four Diamond rating is given to hotels that are “refined, stylish with upscale physical attributes, extensive amenities and high degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail.”
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet
Team MousePlanet is back for our fourth year at the CHOC Walk in the Park, benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County. In 2010, 74 members of Team MousePlanet jointly raised $11,626.40—we'd love to beat that record for 2011. The 2011 race is Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Disneyland Resort. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

3-Day So Cal Resident Ticket ($139) and 3-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper ($154) – The 2011 3-Day So Cal resident discount ticket is $139, $31 more expensive than the 2010 version, and offers Southern California residents three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. This base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $15 per person, you can upgrade to a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. The ticket is valid June 3 through September 5, 2011, but is blocked out July 2-4 and August 21-22. The ticket has a 45-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 45 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($199/$183) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Disneyland website. Ticket must be purchased between June 12 and October 1, 2011, and is not available for purchase at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Ticket is valid beginning June 19, and first use must be on or before October 1, 2011. The ticket has a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). This ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ( $5-$25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is available online and in select Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 21-22, 2011. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $192 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and is valid through December 31, 2011. Summer room-only hotel discounts offer – The Resort is offering discounts of up to 25 percent on select Disneyland Resort Hotel stays for arrivals through August 13, 2011. Travel must be booked by July 23, 2011, and a two-night minimum stay is required. Discount applies only to standard and concierge level rooms. There is a limit of two rooms per reservation, and a maximum of five people per room. Travel must be completed by August 14, 2011.

Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
