Goodbye Greetings
Greetings from California, the large gift shop at the entrance of Disney California Adventure, closed this weekend for renovation as part of DCA's extreme makeover. Like neighboring Engine-Ears Toys, which closed earlier this month, Greetings will be remodeled to fit the new Buena Vista street theme of the new main entrance complex.

When it first opened in 2001, Greetings continued the picture-postcard motif of the DCA main entrance mural. Each room was decorated almost as if it were a scrapbook from one of DCA “districts,” and helped tell the theme of the larger park. An oversize postcard on one wall, sent by Mickey and Minnie to Goofy back in Toontown, supported the park's original back story that the characters were “on vacation” in the new park. Other images showed the characters sunning themselves on Paradise Pier, or dressed up for a night in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot.

The store's decor became outdated the moment Superstar Limo closed in 2002, and has since become a DCA time capsule, filled with obsolete logos and photos of rides that are either closed or massively remodeled—a stark reminder of all of the reasons DCA was being remodeled in the first place.

When it reopens—currently scheduled for May 2012—the store is expected to have three unique storefronts that willremain connected inside. Los Feliz Five and Dime will be the souvenir section of the new store, in the first section nearest the main entrance. The toy selection from Engine-Ears Toys will be relocated to the new Dumbo-themed Big Top Toys store, which will occupy the space under the Monorail bridge where the AP processing center, photo imaging stations and pin displays were located. The rest of the space will be devoted to the Elias & Co. Department Store, which will feature clothing, accessories, collectibles, and art.

Across the street, the Engine-Ears Toys complex is being expanded, with a new room being constructed under the Monorail bridge. The new addition will be named Julius Katz Shoe & Watch Repair, and will offer a similar selection of mugs and house wares as Disneyland's Market House. The PhotoPass pickup counter will be relocated next door, at Kingswell Camera Shop. The rest of the Engine-Ears Toys space will become Trolley Treats, with an expanded candy kitchen and packaged treats.
During the construction of the two main entrance stores, DCA will deploy a fleet of merchandise kiosks to sell souvenirs from any nook and cranny the shop managers can fit a cart. Disney has already opened a temporary candy counter in the Pacific Wharf area to help replace the Greetings candy kitchen, and World of Disney store cast members say they are prepared for higher traffic due to the DCA shop closures.
Detour ahead
It's been rumored, discussed and debated, but today the alternate entrance to Disney California Adventure finally opens, as the Buena Vista Street project forces the closure of DCA's main entrance plaza. A new construction wall just inside the DCA entrance, painted and decorated to resemble the park's new Pan-Pacific Auditorium-inspired entrance gates, funnels visitors into a new walkway behind Soarin' Over California. The path ends in the Condor Flats area next to Soarin' Over California.

Though a large chunk of the park entrance is now behind walls, a newly reopened path will actually help ease congestion through the Golden State district. The walkway between Condor Flats and “a bug's land” has has reopened, eliminating the need to walk all the way to Paradise Pier and around the Golden State area to reach the park exit. There is also a new route through the Carthay Circle Theater construction site, giving access between Condor Flats and the Hollywood Pictures Backlot.

With the Guest Relations lobby now closed for construction, a temporary trailer east of Soarin’ Over California serves as a temporary Guest Relations office.
Runners, take your places
The 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend takes place over Labor Day weekend, with the Health and Fitness Expo starting on Friday and the Star Tours 5K and Disneyland Kids Races on Saturday morning. The 6th annual Disneyland Half Marathon is Sunday, September 4.
The half-marathon race is scheduled to start at 6:00 a.m., and roads closures around the resort will begin at 5:00 a.m. Disney is strongly encouraging runners who are staying at select Good Neighbor Hotels to use the complementary event shuttles to reach the race check-in area. Runners who will be driving to the race will park in the Mickey and Friends parking structure, and Disney asks that you allow plenty of time to get there. Runners are asked to arrive by 4:30 a.m. and be in their corrals by 5:15 a.m.
The race will impact traffic on Interstate 5 through the Anaheim area, closing the Katella Avenue exit from the northbound I-5, the Disney Way exit from the southbound I-5 and both Harbor Boulevard exits from the I-5 close between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. on race day. The course winds from the Disneyland Resort to the Honda Center, then to Anaheim Stadium and back, so expect road closures on sections of major roads including Ball Road, Harbor Boulevard and Katella Avenue. Disney is not allowing spectators to view the race course from inside either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure unless they have purchased a gold or platinum ChEAR Squad package. If you want to come cheer on the runners, however, Disney recommends four viewing areas on property:
- Start line (Disneyland Drive to Katella Avenue) – 6:00 to 6:40
- Esplanade between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure – 6:05 to 7:00
- Disneyland Drive to Ball Road – 6:20 to 7:26
- Final 3/4 mile (road from Paradise Pier Hotel to Disneyland Hotel and behind ESPN Zone) – 7:00 to 10:00
All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot so you will need to walk either from the Mickey and Friends parking structure (or from your hotel if staying nearby).
You can also go to Anaheim Stadium and cheer on the runners as they round the bases. The stadium will be open from 6:45 to 9:20 for spectators; enter via the Orangewood Avenue entrance.
Disneyland opens at 9:00 a.m. and Disney's California Adventure opens at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Due to the Star Tours 5K, the Magic Morning normally scheduled on Saturdays is instead being offered on Friday, September 2.

Disneyland Drive also closes between Magic Way and Paradise Way from August 31 through September 3 from 1:00 – 6:00 a.m., and on September 5 from 12:30 through 6:00 a.m. while workers set up and remove the stage and barricades along the start and finish lines.
PhotoPass goes for a ride
Four Disneyland Resort attractions—Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and California Screamin'—now offer riders the ability to add their souvenir on-ride photos to their PhotoPass cards. The new program has significantly different policies than the normal PhotoPass product. According to a friendly cast member, the new ride PhotoPass card is gray, to help distinguish it from the regular blue PhotoPass.
In addition, when you purchase a ride photo from one of the four participating locations, you have the option of also receiving a free digital download of your photo. Prices start at $14.99 for a 5″ x 7″ photo. If you don't want to carry a printed photo all day, you can just purchase the digital download for $14.99.
You can have the photos loaded onto your existing PhotoPass, or onto a separate ride PhotoPass. Cast members recommend that you load the photos onto a different card, because the expiration period is different for ride photos than it is for regular PhotoPass images. Ride photos can be accessed online for 30 days after they are taken, but once you access the photo, you only have 10 days to download it before the photo is deleted. With normal PhotoPass images, you have 30 days to access the photos, and another 30 days to purchase the photos. You can not add or remove borders from the ride photos – the digital download is exactly the same as the purchased photo.
Resort construction update
We have a few photos taken from around the Disneyland Resort last week. The most noticeable change is in Cars Land, where the construction site has cleared enough that you can now see straight down “Route 66” through the center of town, all the way to the still under-construction city hall building. Testing of the Radiator Springs Racers attraction began last week, with testing of Luigi's Flying Tires scheduled to start in September. A large wing nut has been placed atop Flo's V-8 Diner, and it feels like the whole area has transitioned from a pile of building materials into a recognizable land.

Over at Disneyland, the Emporium has partially reopened. Much of the store has been closed while workers remodeled the main room, moving the cash registers to the walls as they are in Walt Disney World stores, and building new display fixtures in the center of the sales floor. A similar makeover was recently completed at the World of Disney store, and at the Disney Clothiers across Main Street from the Emporium. While cast members say they like the look of the new displays—especially the highly detailed props behind the cash registers—some grumble about the height of the new counters. Rather than building a single counter low enough to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, designers built the entire counter at that height. Cashiers complain about the height, but admit that it's much friendlier for younger customers. The back half of the Emporium is now closed for renovation, and is expected to open by October.

This and That…
…The Disney Parks Blog announced last Monday a new collection of character ear hats, designed to look like popular Disney characters such as Tinker Bell, Dumbo, Pluto, and the Cheshire Cat. The good news is that the ears are now available for sale at the Disneyland Resort, and they are selling quite well. The bad news is that, despite the comment by product developer Megan Kachur in the blog post that “It was critical to make these new hats embroidery-friendly,” Disneyland stores are currently not able to embroider the hats. Cast members say that the thickness of the new hats, combined with design elements like appliques and ruffles, make them unsuitable for embroidery. After cast members ruined a number of hats trying to embroider them upon initial arrival, hat shop managers put a halt to embroidery sales for now.

…Disney announced last week that the official Mobile Magic app for Verizon Wireless customers, is now available at no charge. Disney previously offered the app, which has Disneyland and Walt Disney World versions, as a subscription, and has recently been testing different pricing structures. The app offers official wait times and Fastpass return times for Disney attractions, GPS-enabled park maps, the ability to make dining reservations from your phone, and games to keep you occupied while you wait in line. The app is currently available only for Android phones through the Android Market, but a version for the Verizon iPhone is in the works. Unlike some of the unofficial apps that allow you to monitor wait times from anywhere, Mobile Magic displays content only while you are physically inside a Disney theme park.
…The House of Blues in Downtown Disney now serves breakfast between 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. The menu includes creole chicken and chocolate chip waffles; biscuits and gravy; Caribbean steak and eggs; Cajun breakfast burrito; a breakfast burrito, and even fish tacos.
…If you purchased a brick when Disneyland announced the end of the Walk of Magical Memories program earlier this year, your brick may finally have been installed. MousePlanet readers dlfansx4 and Tinkermommy braved the scorching heat this weekend to search the newly installed sections for bricks purchased by other MousePlanet readers during the last few days of the program. According to dlfansx4, these are the highest brick numbers installed in the three new sections:

…Thanks to information gleaned from a VIP seating package auctioned during the D23 Expo last week, we now know that the dates for the 2011 Candlelight Processional will be December 3 and 4. Disneyland has not yet announced the dates officially, nor has it announced performances times, narrator or availability (if any) of dining packages. Disneyland did not offer a Candlelight dining package in 2010.
…Disneyland is not having a Haunted Mansion Holiday merchandise event this year, but the park has posted a preliminary list of merchandise it will release on Saturday, September 17. The Haunted Mansion Holiday and Halloween Time Product Release and Signing will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Disneyana shop on Main Street.
…Disneyland and DCA park hours are now posted through most of October in our Park Schedule/Blockout Dates section. If you're visiting during HalloweenTime, be sure to pay very close attention to the operating hours of each park, as they change daily due to the after-hours Halloween parties.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet
Team MousePlanet is back for our fourth year at the CHOC Walk in the Park, benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County. In 2010, 74 members of Team MousePlanet jointly raised $11,626.40—we'd love to beat that record for 2011. The 2011 race is Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Disneyland Resort. There is no fee to sign up; you just need to raise $50 by the event day. Here's how you can participate:

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 27–29. Registration for the half marathon is now sold out; registration for the family races is still open at the Run Disney website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

3-Day So Cal Resident Ticket ($139) and 3-Day So Cal Resident Park Hopper ($154) – The 2011 3-Day So Cal resident discount ticket is $139, $31 more expensive than the 2010 version, and offers Southern California residents three one-day admissions to either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure. The ticket is the same price for adults and children. This base ticket is NOT a park hopper, and allows admission to only one park per day. For an additional $15 per person, you can upgrade to a 3-day Park Hopper ticket that allows admission to both parks each day. The ticket is valid June 3 through September 5, 2011, but is blocked out July 2-4 and August 21-22. The ticket has a 45-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 45 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($199/$183) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Disneyland website. Ticket must be purchased between June 12 and October 1, 2011, and is not available for purchase at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Ticket is valid beginning June 19, and first use must be on or before October 1, 2011. The ticket has a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). This ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ( $5-$25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $234/$216 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $249/$231 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is available online and in select Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 21-22, 2011. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $192 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
