Refurbishment season begins again
Labor Day typically marks the start of the fall refurbishment season at the Disneyland Resort, but the list of scheduled ride closures has some readers asking if this year isn't worse than usual. As of this Friday, closing for refurbishment are the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, and California Screamin'. Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain both reopen by September 15 for the start of the HalloweenTime promotion, but Screamin' remains closed through October 14, and Pirates is down until Thanksgiving.
The closure of Pirates seems to be especially upsetting to some fans, and we've heard from many readers who have cancelled or rescheduled their vacation plans to avoid the worst of the closures.

Are the closures actually worse than in past years? Compared to 2010, the answer is: not really. Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain also closed last year at this time to allow installation of the Halloween overlays. Star Tours was closed pending the 3-D upgrade, Mickey and Minnie's houses were being renovated and Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin was closed for nearly two months.
Last year in Disney California Adventure park, The Little Mermaid and Goofy's Sky School had not yet opened, Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular was on a construction-related hiatus, and Toy Story Midway Mania! was closed until mid-October. There are actually more rides open this year, and that doesn't even take into consideration last year's restaurant closures (Village Haus, French Market, and most of the Paradise Pier eateries).
Going back to 2009, Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln was being updated, Casey Jr. Circus Trains and the Storybook Land Canal Boats were closed for lengthy refurbishments, Pirates and Space were getting fitted for their Halloween costumes, and Gadget's Go Coaster, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Indiana Jones Adventure all had short closures. In DCA, still no Little Mermaid, the Orange Stinger was being peeled, and World of Color was still being built.
The annual holiday overlays are a common thread here, and some readers asked if Disneyland really needs to install all three overlays (Haunted Mansion Holiday, Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and “it's a small world” Holiday) every year. MousePlanet reader fairestoneofall wrote, “It didn't occur to me the effect it could have on a guest until a trip with my sister in April. We rode (Haunted Mansion) on our first day and she mentioned that it was the first time she had seen HM without the overlay in almost 10 years! She usually makes a holiday trip with us during Oct/Nov/Dec once a year.”

Reader carolinakid suggested, “I wish they would do them say, every other year or perhaps take turns, this Christmas (“it's a small world), next Christmas (Haunted Mansion) and so on.” missm agreed, saying that she usually visits in December, and has only seen the normal Haunted Mansion once in the past six years. “I do not like the Mansion overlay … it wouldn't bother me at all if they only did the overlay every other year on that ride.”
There may also be more than a little construction fatigue at play here. Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis thanked fans at the D23 Expo for their patience during the expansion project, which began nearly three years ago with the start of the Paradise Pier makeover. Today, just walking around the Disneyland Hotel or entering Disney California Adventure requires navigating a very real maze of work walls and construction sites. With at least 9 months to go until the last of the DCA walls come down and Cars Land opens, it's no wonder repeat visitors are a bit weary of it all.

ElecTRONica hiatus
In June, Disney announced that the after-hours ElecTronica event had been extended until spring 2012, but provided no schedule details. Last week, the Resort confirmed via Twitter that the show will be dark most of this month, returning on Friday, September 30. Disney says ElecTRONica is “redigitizing,” while the Orange County Register quotes Disney spokeswoman Michele Himmelberg as saying the show “is getting a slight refresh.”
Record set at Disneyland half marathon
The 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend was held this past Labor Day weekend, and if the weather conditions weren't optimal for setting speed records, the event did set a record for the number of participants registered. 15,000 people signed up for the 2011 event, 1000 more than in 2010. Some participants felt that the extra runners made several already-tight portions of the course (especially noticeable while in the theme parks) a bit more difficult to navigate.

Completing the entire course were 12,785 participants representing 49 states and 23 countries. First across the tape was Humberto Rojas of Fountain Valley (a town south of Anaheim), who finished the course in 1:08:14. Even after adding almost three minutes to her time from last year, Rachel Booth successfully defended her 2010 title as first woman finisher with a time of 1:18:01. For Booth (of Mandeville, Louisiana), the Disneyland race was a training run for the Olympic trials in January.

Brea's Kevin Brody won the men's Master (age 40 and over) division with a time of 1:13:03. San Diego's Tracy Wright won the women's Masters division with a time of 1:27:17. Marc Aten, of Moorpark, CA, won the men’s wheelchair division in 1:02:21. There was only one participant in the women's wheelchair division.

Comedian and TV game show host Drew Carey completed the race in 1:50:46, setting a personal record despite running with a separated clavicle from a training accident. This was his second half-marathon, and he called it a “really good event.” “It's nice and flat, only a couple of little hills. The stadium was great, running through the park was great.”

Walk this way…
The Buena Vista street construction zone means a new temporary entrance for DCA visitors, and new locations for several guest services. The walkway is surprisingly wide once you get beyond the immediate entrance area, and cast members are on hand to direct guests to stay to the left of the walkway. This gets a little tricky, as most people tend to stay to the right as they walk.

The temporary guest relations trailer is located next to Soarin' Over California, though the information kiosk is located next to Fly 'n' Buy in Condor Flats. The smoking area in Condor Flats is now closed, and the smoking area behind the Grizzly River Run attraction entrance is now the closest one to the park entrance. The GRR smoking area will be closed on nights when there are two World of Color shows, when that area is used as a holding queue for the second show.

PhotoPass has been relocated to a small cart outside of Fly 'n' Buy, and a new metal shed has been placed next to the store to serve as a temporary stock room. Some cast members have complained about the “ugly metal box,” but it actually fits into the theme of the area quite well. As previously reported here, a fleet of merchandise carts have been deployed throughout DCA to help boost merchandise sales since the park's two main entrance stores are now closed for renovation.

The path next to Soarin' Over California seems to be the biggest pinch point of the new entrance path, To relieve crowding at night, cast members open the exit gate leading to Downtown Disney, and the electronic sign changes to direct visitors to the correct exit. While the Downtown Disney exit may look like the fastest way out of the park, remember that it will leave you outside the bag check zone. If you plan to head to Disneyland or you need to get to the Toy Story parking lot shuttles, the ART stop or other hotel shuttles, you'll need to pass through bag check again. Instead, follow the arrows to the right, and exit into the Esplanade.

This and That…
…A reminder, Disneyland closes at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 8 due to a private party. The park will open at 9 a.m. Thursday; visitors with Magic Morning access can enter at 8 a.m. Disney California Adventure is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, so it looks like a good night to catch dinner and a movie in Downtown Disney after the theme parks close. Be sure to make reservations—with both parks closed by 8, your walk-up options may be limited.

…Disneyland regulars who visit Walt Disney World for the first time often notice the large Braille guide maps located at the Florida theme parks, and wonder why Disneyland doesn't have them. Last week, two Braille maps were installed at Disneyland, one between the Tour Guide Gardens and City Hall on Main Street, and the other next to the information booth at the central hub. The maps feature Braille markings and large print text, and highlight companion restrooms and service animal relief areas.
…The Disney Cruise Line has made another change to the 2012 Mexican Riviera cruises on the Disney Wonder. For cruises departing January 8 to April 22, 2012, the scheduled port stop in Mazatlan has been replaced with an additional call in Cabo San Lucas. Disney says the decision is based in part on “the changing environment in Mazatlan and the surrounding area.”
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet
Team MousePlanet is back for our fourth year at the CHOC Walk in the Park, benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County. In 2010, 74 members of Team MousePlanet jointly raised $11,626.40—we'd love to beat that record for 2011. The 2011 race is Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Disneyland Resort. There is no fee to sign up; you just need to raise $50 by the event day. Here's how you can participate:
- Walk with Team MousePlanet – register to walk with us at the October 16 event, and earn prizes as you meet your fundraising goals. - Disneyland Monorail – opening at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday until further notice. This shortened schedule is due to the Buena Vista Street construction in DCA. The monorail operates on a normal schedule on weekends.
- Haunted Mansion – closed August 29 to September 15 for installation of the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay.
- Pirates of the Caribbean – closed September 7 to November 23 for refurbishment.
- Blue Bayou – closed September 7 to November 23 for refurbishment.
- Space Mountain – closed September 9–15 for installation of the Ghost Galaxy overlay.
- Mark Twain – closed September 26–28 for deck oiling.

Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 27–29. Registration for the half marathon is now sold out; registration for the family races is still open at the Run Disney website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($95) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |

Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $234/$216 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $249/$231 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California. Note: this ticket is no longer listed on the Costco website, but you may find it at Southern California Costco stores. “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $192 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and is valid through December 31, 2011. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
