Disneyland remembers 9/11
In the weeks immediately following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, the nightly flag retreat ceremony at Disneyland took on a special significance with park visitors. The stores on Main Street surrounding Town Square temporarily closed during the ceremony, and crowds packed the sidewalks around the flagpole. This past Sunday, on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, Disneyland hosted a special flag retreat to honor those lost in New York City, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Military bands are frequently featured at the flag retreat on major holidays, and on Sunday, the 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton accompanied Disneyland's Dapper Dans for the musical portion of the ceremony.

The ceremony was slightly modified on this anniversary, with the announcer calling for a moment of silence before the flag was raised from half-staff and then lowered again. Disneyland Resort president George Kalogridis attended the ceremony, along with dozens of cast members from all around the Resort. City Hall closed briefly, and cast members from Town Square shops gathered outside their stores to pay tribute.

An Internet rumor that Sleeping Beauty Castle was closed Sunday for security reasons due to the anniversary was false; the real problem was a hive of bees that swarmed the castle walk-through. The bees could be spotted buzzing around one of the turrets Sunday afternoon, and cast members said they were waiting for a bee removal service before they could reopen the attraction.
Get ready for HalloweenTime
HalloweenTime begins Friday at the Disneyland Resort, and new signs of the season are installed every night after the park closes. The World of Disney and Showcase shops have their costume sections set and ready for would-be Pirates and Princesses to come make their selections. Halloween merchandise is also available throughout the Resort, with displays set up in the Pioneer Mercantile in Frontierland, the Star Trader in Tomorrowland, and Le Bat en Rouge in New Orleans Square.

The first Mickey's Halloween Party for 2011 is Friday, September 30. Disney has announced a few changes for the event, with new trick-or-treat locations and a Phineas and Ferb meet-and-greet. With Pirates of the Caribbean closed for a lengthy refurbishment, Captain Jack Sparrow and pirates Goofy, Pluto, Chip, Dale and Pluto are taking over the Rancho del Zocalo restaurant for “Piratepalooza.”

Mickey’s Costume Party Cavalcade returns for 2011, with performances at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. during the party. The Halloween Screams fireworks are once again exclusive to this event, and are scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
Tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party are available online or at Disneyland ticket booths. If you aren't interested in the party but still want to experience HalloweenTime, Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy both open this Friday, September 16. There's also the Main Street Pumpkin Festival, with hundreds of jack 'o lanterns decorating the buildings of Main Street; the Dia de los Muertos display in Frontierland; and a pumpkin carving demonstration at Big Thunder Ranch.
Oktoberfest in Downtown Disney
The Patina Group kicks off its Oktoberfest celebration with an Oktoberfest beer dinner at Catal on Thursday, September 22. The four-course meal is $50 per person, and includes six beer pairings. The full menu is available on the restaurant website.
The Uva Bar offers an Oktoberfest menu September 22 through October 8. Highlights include a mixed grill of Oktoberfest sausages, frankfurter with sauerkraut, and apple strudel. A selection of beers, including Hofbrau Oktoberfest draft, Reissdorf Kolsch, Schneider-Weisse Meine Hopfenweisse, Franziskaner Hefe Weisse and Samuel Adams Octoberfest will be available.
Oktoberfest ends with a Downtown Disney Biergarten event on Saturday, October 8 from noon to 10pm. A flyer for the event promises live music, dancing and a food and beer menu provided by the Uva Bar.
Carthay Circle Theatre crowned, and other construction news
Last week, the new Carthay Circle Theater building in Disney California Adventure was crowned with a replica of the theater's iconic cupola. The piece was constructed offsite and installed by crane, and makes it seem that work on the still-under-construction building has taken a major leap forward.

While building continues on the south side of Buena Vista Street, demolition continues on the north end. A peek inside the former Engine-Ears Toys shop shows that it has been completely gutted, and it looks like workers aren't much behind in tearing out the interior of Greetings from California.

Cars Land continues to grow more impressive every day, and it seems that work on the Cadillac Range surrounding the area has reached a milestone. The scaffolding around the range is being removed row by row, and workers can be spotted filling in the holes left by the support beams. The back side of the wall remains unfinished, but runners during the Disneyland half-marathon were routed behind DCA at the end of the course, and passed what appeared to be samples of a possible sculpted covering for the wall. One sample was painted blue, the other tan, but both looked like coral-covered rocks. Imagineers have said that work on the side facing Paradise Pier won't begin until the Cars Land side is nearly complete, so we may see some progress on that side soon.

This and That…

…Walt Disney Imagineering was testing an interactive game in Disney California Adventure this weekend. Selected annual passholders were invited to participate in the test, which cast members say involved the use of handheld devices or cell phones. The game had a detective theme, and fedora-clad participants were seen scouting around the Tower of Terror Saturday searching for clues. A television was added to the window of the Tower of Terror gift shop last week for the test, and a photograph inside the store was replaced. A reader also reported seeing something in a window near the Little Mermaid attraction.

Cast members seemed to know little about the game, saying only that they were told to tell guests that it was part of an “innovation process” at the Resort, and to refer anyone who asked to the Blue Sky Cellar. Cast members at the Blue Sky Cellar over the weekend said they knew nothing about it.

That wasn't the only paranormal activity at the Resort in the past few days. On Monday, a group of oddly dressed people were spotted outside the Tower of Terror. One was dressed as a space alien and carried toy blasters, others were carrying toy space ships and planets, and still others were wearing foil hats. A Disney cast member who seemed to be escorting the group would say only that it was for a special event, but we've been told that at least one of the participants in this photo is an entertainment cast member. If anyone knows what this was all about, we're dying to find out. The Truth is Out There…
…TravelZoo is offering a discount for the Mandara Spa at Disney California Adventure. The $99 package includes a 50-minute massage, a 25-minute body polish, and a hair and scalp treatment. The package, which regularly sells for $230, also provides access to the sauna and steam rooms before or after your treatment. You can add a facial to the package for an extra $40. Vouchers are valid Sept. 16, 2011, through March 16, 2012, and do not include tax or gratuity. The offer expires Friday, so book quickly.
…If you or someone you know ran the 2011 Disneyland half-marathon or kids events, photos and video from the events are now posted on the official race photo website. You'll need the bib number or name of the runner to find their photos.
…Mlle. Antoinette's Parfumerie in New Orleans Square has two gift-with-purchase offers this month. From September 15 to 17, customers receive a Very Irresistible Givenchy L'Intense deluxe sample with purchase of $65 or more of Givenchy products. From September 22- to 4, customers receive a Guerlain train case with a purchase of $120 or more of Guerlain merchandise.
…This is the week that Disneyland normally announces their fall ticket promotion. If there is an offer for 2011, expect news right around the start of HalloweenTime.

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet
Team MousePlanet is back for our fourth year at the CHOC Walk in the Park, benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County. In 2010, 74 members of Team MousePlanet jointly raised $11,626.40—we'd love to beat that record for 2011. The 2011 race is Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Disneyland Resort. There is no fee to sign up; you just need to raise $50 by the event day. Here's how you can participate:

Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 27–29. Registration for the half marathon is now sold out; registration for the family races is still open at the Run Disney website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($95) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |

Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California. Note: this ticket is no longer listed on the Costco website, but you may find it at Southern California Costco stores. “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. This ticket comes with a $50 Disney gift card, and has an “upgrade value” of $192 if you want to update the 4-day ticket to a higher value ticket or annual pass. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
