Passholders pleased with private party
Business consultant Tom Peters likes to say that the formula for success is to under-promise and over-deliver, and Disney seemed to take that advice when planning last week's Annual Passholder night, the first of two exclusive parties scheduled this month. With little advance information about what the event would include, most passholders seemed pleased with the after-hours party, which included a performance of Mickey's Soundsational parade and access to most Fantasyland and Tomorrowland rides. Completing the schedule were special menu items at two restaurants, a chance for a closer look at the Soundsational floats during a post-parade photo opportunity, and an unannounced panel discussion with the parade designers.

The advertised highlight of the party was a rare nighttime presentation of the parade Disneyland introduced this summer, giving most passholders their first look at the special lighting on the floats—effects that aren't visible during daytime performances. The light crowds also allowed the parade performers more opportunity to interact with the audience. After the parade, several of the floats were parked on Main Street U.S.A., with areas set up for passholders to take photos with some of the parade performers. Though ropes prevented the crowds from getting too close to the floats, the night provided a unusual opportunity to examine the detail on the floats and discover hard-to-see design elements.

Following the parade, art designers Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily and senior show director John Addis took the stage in Tomorrowland for a Soundsational panel discussion. The only complaints we heard about the passholder party was that this interview session was not listed on the event schedule for the night, causing many passholders to miss it. An announcement was made on Main Street following the end of the parade, but by that time most people had already dispersed into Tomorrowland or Fantasyland for more rides. For those who did attend, Kidney and Daily showed design models of a few elements of the parade floats, and disclosed the location of a few hidden characters, which made the float viewing even more interesting. After the discussion, Kidney and Daily returned to Main Street to chat with fans near one of the floats.

Disney has not said how many passholders attended the event, but several cast members estimated the crowd at under 5,000. After the initial rush at the rides and restaurants, passholders who stayed after the parade reported that most rides were a walk-on, with cast members at Star Tours delighting guests by allowing ride-throughs on the popular attraction when there was nobody waiting to board. For many, the chance to experience the park with so few other people was enough of a treat, but Disneyland had a few other offers for passholders.

Upon checking in for the event, passholders received an event schedule, list of special offers, list of locations that would remain open during the party, and a PhotoPass coupon offering five digital photo downloads for $1.99. Passholders were advised to ask at four dining locations for their special offers. Tomorrowland Terrace offered a small Soundsational cupcake free with any meal purchase. Cast members at the Blue Ribbon Bakery were reportedly initially surprised to learn that they were on the list, and said they didn't have anything planned. By the end of the night, however, they were offering a special dessert in a Donald Duck demitasse cup.
The Main Street Refreshment Corner and Redd Rockett's Pizza Port used the event to test two new menu items. The Refreshment Corner served a bacon macaroni-and-cheese dog with chips. While the headline was the macaroni and cheese, the real star of the dish was a new premium hot dog, which was larger and more flavorful than the current version sold at the resort. Redd Rockett's Pizza Port dished up a new buffalo chicken pizza, which received mixed reviews from those who sampled it.

Disney also set up kiosks where Deluxe and Premium passholders could renew their annual passes and receive a $20 discount. While Disney usually offers this same discount for renewals, passholders at the event could renew regardless of when their passes would expire, rather than wait until the normal renewal period of 30 days before expiration.
These special offers may give some insight into what Disney hoped to get from the event. Dozens of managers and executive team members, including Disneyland Resort president George Kalogridis, were spotted observing crowds and speaking with attendees. The foods department got the opportunity to test a couple of new menu items and get guest feedback, but more importantly, also got a look at just how much passholders were willing to spend on dinner and snacks during events such as this.
For PhotoPass, this was a big introduction to the passholder community, who may be less inclined than day guests to use the photography service. With the discount offered during the event serving as incentive for passholders to try the service, the PhotoPass-staffed photo spots set up in front of each float gave the department a valuable opportunity to interact with annual passholders, and introduce them to the PhotoPass scan codes contained in most of the new annual passes.
The second Passholder party is scheduled for tonight, October 17. Unlike the first event, Disney did not post a guest list for this party, so we know neither the number invited, nor the size of the event. Tonight's passholder party is scheduled from 8:00 p.m. until midnight, though passholders can arrive as early as noon to check in and receive their event wristbands. Each passholder selected for the party can bring up to three additional passholders as guests.
Many MousePlanet readers reported that they had more admissions than they needed for the first event, and offered the extra spots to grateful MousePlanet readers who were not selected. We were really pleased by the generosity of our community, and know that those readers who got to use the extra tickets were thrilled at the chance to attend the event.
If you have extra tickets for tonight's event and want to offer them to a MousePlanet reader, please post on our MousePad discussion board. Remember, you and your guests must all hold current and valid Disneyland Annual Passports, and the event instructions state that your entire party must check in together. If you offer tickets, you're responsible for working out the details (preferably offline) with anyone who responds to your request. It is a good idea to post how many spots you have open and what time you'd like to check in, so you can find someone who can complete your group and won't hold you up by arriving later than you plan to. Also, this was a free event, and so we expect that anyone offering a ticket is doing so with no expectation of payment of any kind.
If you are an Annual Passholder who was not selected and are interested in attending tonight's event, be sure to check the discussion thread—there are several offers already posted.
If you're attending tonight's party, we have once again organized a MousePlanet meet-up, from 7:45 to 8:00 p.m. Stop by Canaration Plaza Garden (where the swing dancing is held on weekend nights) to snag your MousePlanet button. That lets you get back to the party by 8, so you can get in all the rides you can handle or find a good spot on the parade route.
Thank you Team MousePlanet!
The Disneyland Resort hosted the 21st Annual CHOC Walk in the Park this weekend, with over 14,000 walkers participating in the annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County. Team MousePlanet returned for our fourth year, raising $4,673. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $27,000 for CHOC since 2008.

There's still time to support Team MousePlanet in the 2011 CHOC Walk. Visit our CHOC Walk team page to sponsor an individual Team MousePlanet walker and help them earn prizes, or make a general donation to our team. Donations for the 2011 event are accepted through October 28.
Registration for the 2012 CHOC Walk will begin next summer, and we'd love to have you join Team MousePlanet next year. Information will be published here as we have it.

This and That…
…The Utah Education Association (UEA) convention is October 20 & 21, leading to what some call “Utah Escapes to Anaheim” weekend at the Disneyland Resort. We expect extra crowds October 20–23 as Utah students and families take advantage of the 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Fall
- HalloweenTime at the Disneyland Resort – September 16 to October 31

Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – December 4–6 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the dates as November 4–6 (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort – November 14, 2011 to January 8, 2012.
- Candlelight Processional – December 3 & 4. Performances times, narrator and availability (if any) of dining packages have not yet been announced.

2012
- ElecTRONica – Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights now through Spring 2012.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 27–29. Registration for the half marathon is now sold out; registration for the family races is still open at the Run Disney website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $209/$193 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $224/$208 |
Advance Purchase 3-day, One Park Per Day Bonus Ticket ($199/$183) or 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($214/$198) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from the Disneyland website, this ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ( $5-$25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Ticket may also be available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and participating travel agents. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($95) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |
|
Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $234/$216 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $249/$231 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California. Note: this ticket is no longer listed on the Costco website, but you may find it at Southern California Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 21-22, 2011. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-day, One Park Per Day Bonus Ticket ($219/$201) or 4-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($234/$216) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all four admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all five admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from the Disneyland website, this ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ($5 to $25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
